Mark Zuckerberg gets married

From my 2010 movie review of The Social Network:
There’s much debate in the press about how realistically the film portrays the tycoon. The obvious answer is that [screenwriter Aaron] Sorkin is projecting onto Zuckerberg his own (perhaps not wholly undeserved) self-loathing over sex, drugs, and ethnicity.
In Sorkin’s imagination, Silicon Valley looks like Jim Morrison’s Laurel Canyon in 1969, with barely legal stoned groupies swarming over the nerds. (The reality is that Zuckerberg has had the same unspectacular girlfriend, to whom he appears devoted, since he started Facebook. Monogamy is a huge time-saver.)

Congratulations to Zuck.

Steve, it has been mentioned in another thread but could you provide some analysis on whether Facebook investor and Zuckerberg fraternity brother Eduardo Saverin received an affirmative action preference (as a Hispanic) in being admitted to Harvard? The question brings together several of your recent posts (on Saverin, on the definition of "Hispanic," etc.).

It could be he really loves her. And Zuck is a geek prince.

I think its more likely the effect of high IQ. High IQ in men, is a downer, for women. UNLESS moderated by the things women love/lust for: aggression, high testosterone, risk-taking, social dominance.

Steve Jobs was for years an also-ran to Bill Gates, yet Jobs dominated in a way that Gates, arguably more influential, never did. Why?

Because women, the gatekeepers of much of society post WWII, in the consumer era, find high IQ detestable, given how much it runs with things women HATE HATE HATE: abstract thinking, nerdiness, obsessions with stats/numbers/abstract ideas, lack of big man charisma, etc.

For men, high IQ in women is a plus. Far less likely to stray, head rules loins, a good deal. For women, the opposite, they'd rather have say Arnold Schwarzenegger than Bill Gates, any day of the week.

Zuckerberg married the girl because that was ... AS GOOD AS HE COULD GET. Period. Even with all his billions, that was it.

Lets face it, a guy with high IQ, nerdy physique, lack of social dominance (Zuckerberg hates social engagements, speaking, etc) does not have many options. The local drug dealer/indie musician has better, hotter, more intelligent women after him than Zuckerberg.

Its a woman's world ... for now. And the high IQ guys just have to get what they can, unless they can amp up their testosterone and become say, Jamie Dimon.

In the film, Zuckerberg pines for a Jewish girl who won't have him, while one of his partners (Saverin, iirc) falls in love with a psychotic Asian chick. Sorkin even got in more points by making it a girl whose family had changed their name from Albrecht to Albright (perhaps a reference to the former secretary of state and her family's disguised ethnicity).

I can think that the relationship might also have a practical side. They've been dating since before he started Facebook, so there's more certainty that she's not just a golddigger.

Jesus! Of course he is! Just the fact that some moderately smart and very driven guy got very lucky does not make him an alpha. His money will make him an "alpha" in women's eyes but that's where the neat boundaries start blurring ... as they always do.

Wealthy men can more or less buy a hot young wife. So he could have just gone that route. But there's an element of shamelessness in that that Zuckerberg might not be comfortable with.

It is a little heartwarming that this wormy looking fellow has stuck by his devoted Asian girlfriend. It would be more fun if Zuck was more like Jesse Eisenberg's portrayal, but I suspect like many high-achieving nerds he just doesn't have much of a personality. But who knows.

That haircut, though. It's something else.

I've decided that Whiskey has got to be a troll. He's really good at it too since it's so hard to tell, most of the time. But the comment he made above makes it extremely obvious.

On a side note, I thought Z. was super cute since I first saw his picture in 2004. Since I don't resemble a supermodel, it always warmed my heart that the kind of men that inhabited my fantasies tended to look for a lot more than hot groupies who, no doubt, trip over each other, trying to get to these men by the thousands. Of course, the founder of Google got himself a very intelligent, accomplished wife who is also model beautiful, but, overall, 10 out of 10 beauty doesn't seem to be a requirement among the intellectual elite. I bet their marriages last longer than those of the sports or Hollywood elites.
Highly intelligent people usually find it harder to form real connections and feel real respect towards others because so many people just aren't at their level, and they are smart enough to see serious flaws that a regular joe-shmoe would miss. So it makes sense that once they find a person they can love and relate to, they'd hold on to her.

With that much money he could get a hotter wife.

With bombshells though, there could be a good chance of divorce, cheating, etc.

He may just be so introverted that spending time to pursue a hotter non-bombshell wife that will stick around is too psychologically draining.

Does Whiskey really believe that alphas can succeed at a place like MIT if they spend all of their time chasing women. Such alpha guys do not last very long in such cultures because the asian/nerdy engineers with out compete them for career success.

What a load of nonsense Whiskey's comments are.

I never bothered to watch the movie, but Hollywood rarely gets it right, so I'm not surprised. It's nice that Zuckerberg and his new wife, Priscilla Chan, pulled off a quiet wedding without the paparazzi or gossip columnists in attendance.

It's kind of interesting that this is a Jewish-American and Chinese-American pairing, which seems to be pretty common in Ivy League circles.

The striking difference between Zuckerberg and Page, however, in terms of whom they married, is not insignificant. Page married a beautiful woman who is not a gold digger -- just a very, very hot and very smart woman. That is not easy to do, even if you are someone like Larry Page. As has been said, a rich guy like Zuck or Page can "buy" a gold-digging hot woman by trying to attract her with his money, but she's not really attracted to *him*, in that case. If you leave aside trying to attract gold diggers and focus on what kinds of women these guys can attract who are attracted to them as guys, you can see the differences separate more easily.

Zuckerberg married fairly average for a UMC guy. I know plenty of guys who are UMC who married women like Pamela Chan -- it's a fairly average match. That doesn't make it a bad thing, it just makes it average. Zuck didn't have the pull to bat above his weight there, without going for a gold-digger. There's no real shame in that, really -- Sergey Brin and Bill Gates batted similarly in the mate stakes. In a sense it really *is* "the best he could do" (probably) as Whiskey says (again, leaving aside gold diggers), and it's about average for a UMC Harvard guy like him (drop out or not ... dropping out doesn't count when you're Zuck or Gates).

Page didn't, which means he likely has something else going on -- more of a darker alpha side to him or something that he doesn't show to the world in general, but which allowed him to attract and retain the wife he has.

"I have this theory that people who live in Palo Alto are less screwed up on average than anywhere else."

Steve Jobs was not screwed up? The fool died because he tried to holistically treat his own cancer. As a manager he was a totally abusive bastard. I just think people living in Palo Alto are more image conscious corporate types with the benefit of publicists, but as to what is actually going on in their brains or personal lives, who knows?

Robert Holmgren said...

Most of coastal California is made up of people from elsewhere. Palo Alto shares that trait with the admix of highly educated management types. Preidents, CFOs, and other senior management choose Palo Alto. Early stage entrepeneurs find it difficult to find affordable housing. It's overwhelmingly older white middle class but a typical evening on University Avenue brings out lots of younger Indian and other Asian populations. Mountain View to the south seems more. closely aligned with the typical younger white and non-white tech worker struggling to make it crowd. East Palo Alto is where most of the areas black population resided until being replaced by Latinos who seem to make up the largest share of the employees of Ikea, Best Buy and Home Depot stores. To the north Menlo Park seems the more likely location for Stanford faculty, middle management and younger educated white families. Over all crime is low and rents are high with a good level of social cohesion absent long many long time residents. Most local families send their children out of state for higher education. When they return they find the living too costly and suburban and head to San Francisco for their social life and available rental stock.

I have never heard a single woman say that they lusted after Arnold. If you ask women who they think is super attractive, Brad Pitt's name comes up a lot.

NOTA said...

I think Steve's line about monogamy being a huge time saver is right, and is closely related to the higher rate of marriage and related social conservatism among more successful and higher IQ people. Spending all your time chasing girls and dealing with relationship drama and scheduling when to visit your kids in the custody of your ex-wife makes it harder to accomplish other goals, like found a company or make partner or finish your dissertation/get a good postdoc/get tenure. Most social conservatism in your daily life = more stability and a less chaotic life = a better chance to achieve goals that require consistent work and stability. Further, nothing motivates you to get/keep a job like kids to feed and a mortgage to pay off.

My guess is that one force behind the push for gay marriage is the fact that gays at the high end of the IQ/education/success distribution see the culture of social conservatism among their straight peers, and want to follow it. (For sociobiological reasons, I expect gay men need this more but won't benefit as much, whereas lesbians need it less but will benefit more from it.)

whiskey is half right. Zuckerberg could have gotten a much hotter woman, but she'd certainly be a gold-digger with no devotion to him (and very likely to cheat). An alpha can get the hot woman's full devotion.

Jobs, as whiskey accurately points out, was a proper alpha. Joan Baez once related a story from their relationship:

Seeing a beautiful dress in a shop, Baez asked Jobs to buy it for her. Jobs refused, but decided to buy a great looking shirt for himself before they left the store.

That, my friends, is alpha.

Is it not possible that this woman is the love of Zuckerberg's life and that's why he married her? She was with him before he was even a thousandaire, so perhaps he appreciates her loyalty. The women you have the best chemistry/primal attraction with aren't always the best looking.

Not every guy consciously analyzes each pair-bonding to insure they are maximizing their opportunity to bag the hottest gal available. They are happy to get laid by a woman that isn't a total shrew and looks OK. Some guys are thrilled to find one woman willing deal with their eccentricities, and Mark Zuckerberg seems like a really odd duck.

Steve,

And for those billionaires that seek a hugh hefner type lifestyle there are consultants who specialize in setting it up. Most famously the harem enterprise described in "some girls". A nonfiction tome by a los angesles based writer.

Also, one notes that you don't mention East Palo Alto, the servants' barrio on the other side of the freeway from P.A.

It seemed to me on my last visit to Silicon Valley and Marin County, about five years ago, that parts of the San Francisco area seem quite wholesome, burgher-ish, and upper middle class Middle American, provided that one sticks to the good areas of the San Fran. suburbs.

Perhaps Steve formed the same selective impression.

Whiskey is clearly correct that Zuck is a beta. Even in some of their wedding pictures, she looks cold and domineering. I bet she wears the pants in that relationship.

What Zuck didn't do once he struck riches was buy a Ferrari, get a slamming bachelor pad, and start banging loads of hotties. Guy could have been having parties with porn stars, for goodness sake. But he stuck by his marginally attractive girlfriend who, in some pictures, already seems to be getting fat.

To me this suggests he has a lower than average sex drive, or is so whipped that he was unable to break off his relationship once he became famous.

Also, he will now presumably have babies with her. As the Lightly Braised Turnip blogger hilarious puts it: His bride, Priscilla Chan, surely will be a “tiger mom” to a brood of Jewish-Asian babies – the human version of the Labradoodle.

To me, any man who willingly procreates his own, desired children (not ignored bastard spawn) outside his race is automatically a beta. Why on earth would he want a bunch of Chinese babies? Because the idea of race doesn't even enter his brainwashed little head.

SWPLs really make the worst billionaires.

"...obsessions with stats/numbers..."

Whiskey, you're terrible with numbers. You've shown this to us many times.

"Zuckerberg married the girl because that was ... AS GOOD AS HE COULD GET."

You don't even try to make sense. He's a freaking multi-billionaire. The things we know about Zuckerberg's private life now are very similar to the things we knew about Tiger's life before the Swedish girl hit him with a golf club: very rich, married, seems like a nice, quiet guy. Is he anything like Tiger behind the scenes? No idea.

"Zuckerberg hates social engagements, speaking, etc"

How do you know this? He didn't seem very shy in the TV interviews I've seen.

Dr. Seattle said...

Contra Whiskey: of course Zuck could have gotten himself a hotter girlfriend, if he wanted to. But I'll posit that the time and energy investment wasn't worth it to him.

For high IQ man, you want a high IQ woman so you can relate to her intellectually and ensure you're going to have smart kids. Sure you can get a not-so-smart model, but you can't fix stupid.

And yes, in the whole world there are some women who are gorgeous, very smart, and have good character, and are available... there just aren't that many. So even for a billionaire, the investment in time and energy to find that very rare woman just isn't worth it.

well, i do agree with whiskey on one thing. in general, women hate demonstrations of actual high intelligence in men. that turns them off like a switch. they have a visceral dislike for any men who are genuinely highly intelligent.

there is a myth and lie in society that women like intelligent men, but it would be more accurate to say they like men who are smarter than average, but not too smart. just as they like men who are taller than average, but not too tall.

if you are one of those guys, and you want to interact with women (who aren't in your graduate program), you have to shut that down and hide it almost all of the time. never, never talk like an actual smart guy. never veer off topic from mainstream stupid pop culture into abstract intellectual topics. keep 90% of all your public speaking down in the IQ 110 range. sports, music, movies, and moronic reality television are your available topics.

not only will their brains shut down and will they become quickly bored, agitated, and annoyed if you bump up the topic and chatter into the IQ 140 range (or yikes, higher) and start talking about engineering or science or (or, my goodness, politics), you risk veering off into the land of the unpopular, where you might say some truths or observations about the world which are self evident to you, but which the average person has been conditioned for years to reject and abhor.

let the dumber people set the topics and the tone of the conversation, blend in, don't try to correct anybody or change the topic to some intellectual thing you've been cogitating over for a while. social disaster awaits you around the corner.

you can use your brainpower to be funny, but never use it to show that you're having thought patterns more sophisticated than what weekly elimination shows on television allow. if you're thinking about something more complicated than american idol or dancing with the stars, please, don't tell them. talk about jersey shore or lebron james or the hunger games, or don't talk at all, unless you have some funny jokes or observations.

also like whiskey, i have wondered why most of the wealthiest men in the world have such frumpy girlfriends and wives. a few have very attractive women in their lives but most don't. but i came to a different conclusion than whiskey. these guys so busy building their empires and generating all that wealth, they don't have time to hunt for some special woman who "has it all". looks, brains, personality. they just take the nearest available woman who they can deal with 24 hours a day and who won't drive them crazy.

plus they aren't vain. how many of these super rich guys have bad teeth and are going bald? they could easily change that. but they don't care. when you see some guy with 100 million dollars, let alone 1 billion dollars, and he's going bald, please understand that he doesn't care. he could change that tomorrow but he's not interested. getting the hottest women possible does not motivate all of these titans of industry.

personally though i think zuckerberg made a mistake, not only getting married when his net worth went up to 10 billion or whatever, but he got married in california. california has that 10 year marriage law, where the woman gets half of everything, no questions asked, if the couple divorces beyond the 10 year mark. this is exactly the cold calculation vanessa bryant made on kobe bryant and why she did not divorce him after that rape trail. she wanted all his stuff, and only had to wait a few more years for california law to place it all in her hands. as soon as she passed the 10 year mark, those divorce papers immediately came down on him.

not that this priscilla chan woman is going to be some conniving schemer, but the chan clan is now set up for generations, should zuckerberg and dr. chan have some huge falling out a few years from now and they part ways. we could be hearing about annoying trust fund chan relatives for years.

sometimes i think michelle wie doesn't date guys because her dad is super protective of the preposterous 22 million dollars in sponsorhisp money she had been given during that one year of wie mania, and dear old dad doesn't want some random white guy to come into michelle's life, marry her, have a falling out after 5 rocky years, and then be entitled to a cut of michelle's fortune. i heard she was good friends with andrew luck at stanford though, wink wink. maybe dad would approve that one.

"but Zuck is a beta. Right Whiskey?"

...but Zuckyberg is a beta.

How could a man with that much dough not at least trade up to a cuter (bookish) Ivy League girl?

Nobody expects him to hook-up with a blonde bimbo, but his current wife is a plain jane.

Whiskey said...

Dimon took up boxing in life according to the Financial Times, so yeah he amped up his aggressiveness, not unusual for a I-banker. He was point man on the push-back on the Dodd-Frank regulations for the various I-banks before the London Whale derivatives blew up (I can't understand that trade).

And yes, you can be a billionaire and still be a beta male. Look at Bill Gates. Compared to say, Bono, he's much less socially powerful, does not generate the emotions of fear/lust in women, and fear/respect in men. He's laughed at. As is Zuckerberg.

Now look at Steve Jobs. A-hole? Certainly! But never at a loss for words, never unable to socially dominate a room, always able to create the "reality distortion field" which is another phrase for charisma.

My criticism here of most people commenting, and sorry with all due respect Steve as well, is that you haven't really grasped the profound social change post 1965 or so that resulted from the liberation of women.

It is completely new -- no other time and place has ever had this. It completely obliterates all the old models of power and patronage.

You think money = power. It does not, in the new female oriented consumer society where charisma = power.

If money = power, then by all rights Mr. Bain Capital should be dominating Obama (Mr. Wealth Destruction). If Money = Power, Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg should have dominated the dreams and desires of young and not so young women, for decades.

Money does buy power, but not as much as it used to. What matters at least as much, if not more, in the broader society, and in places where women become more of a force, is charisma and sex appeal. That's why married hard core lefty Democrat women write in to the Huffington Post confessing their sexual fantasies about Scott Brown. Its why Obama is President. Its why Romney as a good looking older guy is important.

As society becomes more and more female dominated, the idea of power and patronage (the old male models) become outmoded and charisma and sexiness tend to dominate. If you wonder why John Wayne and Charles Bronson and other tough-guy actor types have largely disappeared from movies in favor of "sexy" guys look no further.

Zuckerberg is famously shy, does not like (and in fact loathes) public speaking, wears hoodies and jeans, is pale and unathletic. Lacking all the A-hole social dominance cues, I'd say very likely his wife was as good as he would get. He isn't for example, Larry Ellison.

One last point, Heartiste/Roissy has a post on why Chicks Dig Jerks.

The one thing people will say about Zuckerberg is that he is not a "jerk." More a "nice guy" (which equals sexless neuter in women-speak).

He married into his social network(and the same woman who he has been with for just under a decade apparently). if all the hotter golddiggers hadn't shut him out of their social networks earlier one of them might have the prize now.

Whiskey's not a troll; he used to post to Redstate.com under a different username back in 2004-2005 and it was more or less the same thing, albeit not quite as delusional and weird as today. His rantings about Iran taking over America actually fit in pretty well in that insane asylum. As much as we mock Whiskey's foreign policy preferences, people who believe as he does have 100x the power and prestige as we do in modern America.

I'm not going to give his username, but suffice to say it was the name of the lead character from a schlock 1970's TV detective show.

Now look at Steve Jobs. A-hole? Certainly! But never at a loss for words, never unable to socially dominate a room, always able to create the "reality distortion field" which is another phrase for charisma.

It is relative though. He was surrounded mostly by computer nerds. Social domination is more difficult if you're surrounded by more socially adept people than computer types.

I love how it doesn't occur to any of the HBDers/wannabe Roissyites that Zuckerberg with all of his wealth and power...found someone at college with whom he hit it off and continues to make him happy, and that he feels no need to upgrade to a spouse others might find more worthy of a multi-billionaire.

"I have this theory that people who live in Palo Alto are less screwed up on average than anywhere else."

Well, if these people tend to get a sensible middle class upbringing from caring, functional parents, and then they advance through talent and work ethic, it would make sense for them to be in a better place, psychologically, than the majority of their peers.

Some commenters here mentioned that there is an element of luck to the success of the tech elite, and it's true, no doubt. But surely, there is a lot less luck involved in becoming the inventor of the next big thing than in becoming the next top pop star. There are a lot more pretty girls who can learn some dance moves and stay in tune while singing like Britney Spears than there are driven, self-motivated boys who are also smart enough to get into Harvard like Mark Zuckerberg. Sports stars also need a lot more natural talent than pop stars, but talents like physical prowess and willingness to work hard and do what the coach says don't translate into good relationships as well as intelligence, flexibility and self-motivated work ethic.

Also, if the types of people who live in Palo Alto didn't have the luck to end up there, they'd be successful on a smaller scale somewhere else. They come from a less screwed up stock to begin with because the middle class doesn't really have that many pathologies. (Tales of promiscuity, drug abuse and overall lack of direction among even the more liberal branches of the middle class have been greatly exaggerated.)

Thank you! It drives me crazy when people talk about hedge fund managers and investment bankers as "alpha" males. Money does not make one an alpha.

To see a high-testosterone environment go to an MMA gym or be a fly on the wall at a Marine infantry battalion.

Jamie Dimon, who is supposedly a 'bully,' would get his teeth knocked in if he acted the way he does anywhere outside of a fed board meeting or Harvard business school classroom.

Sounds sexy to me. Sounds exactly like the type of a guy i always fantasized about. The fact that he could dominate a girl with his intellect is sexy as all hell. Of course, none of it would matter if he were fat and didn't have a cute face.
1. Zuckerberg isn't famously shy. He famously loathes large social gatherings and performing on stage. Of course, we are both speculating, but I always took that to mean that he isn't an attention whore and dislikes going to large parties where most people are his intellectual inferiors because they bore him. Most smart, confident men I know dislike going to dinner parties, dance clubs or kegers, and they don't care to entertain a room full of people they don't consider interesting.

2.The only men I've ever met who cared about fashion and preened in front of a mirror were either, proles, gay or not white. MZ dresses like all the educated, professional, straight white guys my age. In fact, most of them are perfectly happy to delegate shopping to their girlfriends because as long as they get to look normal and be comfortable, they simply don't care about clothes.

3.Yes, he has white skin. Whoopti-doo. Most middle class white women (and a whole lot of Asians) are into white guys almost exclusively. Not everyone is into black men as much as your trolling persona.

4. Too much of a nice guy to get girls... HAHAHAhahahahaha! As you very well know, most middle class white American men are overall nice guys. They give their fair share to charity, had volunteered at least once in their life, come to your aide if you call for help and feel bad and angry when someone is being hurt. Sure, most of them enjoy crude jokes in private company or while anonymous, but that doesn't make them jerks. Not so coincidentally, middle class white men tend to get married as soon as they feel ready.

Whiskey, admit it. You are a jolly married father somewhere in Hawaii, aren't you? This type of trolling is your embarrassing stress relieving hobby, but it's worth it because you're adding years to the time you'll get to have with your lovely family by laughing your ass off each time you post. How close am I?

I'm uncomfortable with Murray's confidence in the private morality of the rich and meritocratic. What these people get up to inside their bedrooms, or with whom, isn't a question that submits itself to his research methods, however useful in other questions.

It costs him nothing, as a Harvard man, to warn his readers how these meritocrats are sucking up all the Best & Brightest and turning them into warriors for the globalist technocracy. It's like flipping Auster's Liberal script: he can be the class traitor to Harvard, who nonetheless is, you know, *smart* enough to be a part of them. Like Kris Kristofferson in "Heaven's Gate."

Since Zuckerberg's fidelity to his plain jane gf (who may be an astonishing person) has been a subject of comment before-- and I can understand Sorkin may have foisted this interest upon Steve, by his own projections in his script-- I have to say, I'm reminded of Bill Maher's reading of the subtext of the 2000 Presidential race:

George W., against Clinton, campaigns in effect on "I f**k MY WIFE!!!"

And Gore, to compete, smacks lips with Tipper on tv to counter: "I f**k MY WIFE TOO!!!"

--Which may have been a tad disingenuous . . .

In the schema of potato chips vs. computer chips, surely facebook is a potato chip, regardless of it being on our computers.

It's rot. It screws with people's heads, their morals, our sense of privacy.

Sometimes, little sociopaths even go on there to brag about "rapping" someone's eleven year-old daughter.

So it doesn't console me one bit if Zuckerberg's a faithful partner, or just undersexed. If that's all his kind of meritocrat has to recommend him, it doesn't make him some kind of Platonic Guardian.

I can only assume a note of approval here in remarking on Zuckerberg's fidelity. That's fine. But there's a nudge in the direction of a dubious moral: guys like Zuckerberg really have it together. Guys like Zuckerberg (who make money; who are "creative" in that tech/wealth-generating way) are pretty admirable. Maybe they support the wrong causes, but-- you can't really blame them if they win and makeover our society as they please.

Because, you know, they stick to their wives!

This contempt for the lumpenbourgeoisie, who settle for state schools and admire swimsuit models in excess, so they can't be good and make millions like the Beautiful-- I'm sorry,-- the Geek People: I don't buy it.

Is Zuckerberg that smart? Is he that good?

An absence of whips, feathers, and random shopgirls in the beds of la casa del Zuckerberg (assuming this absence is real) is only a sleight-of-hand. If he sits brooding like some Mustapha Mond atop a rubbish pile of voyeurism, exhibitionism, and triviality, does that make him a "together" person?

So what if his pants are pressed? Spiritually, he's a Caligula: he's put us to collecting seashells of trivia, when not debauching us in the dark.

We should endure all this, and the Race To The Bottom, with admiration even if not without complaint, just because-- Techies and Technocrats f**k their wives?

Let Sorkin defame him. The titans of our age are base, even if monogamous.

In my experience, jody is right. It makes sense, when the average female is IQ 100 and the variance is less. If you want to communicate with someone who is less intelligent than you and have them be on the same page, you can't be talking about ideas that take above their IQ limit to comprehend. It's worse if the ideas are not only difficult, but complex (composed of a synthesis of many small things).

This applies to anyone, not just women. Requiring dumber people to converse above their level is like a bunch of 6'6 guys asking their 5'9" friend to join in a friendly slam dunking competition. It's rude and will cause resentment.

Unfortunately the desire to converse about the ideas we have is a drive that most people have, which makes it very lonely to have high IQ (especially so before the internet).

Whiskey’s comment had me rolling on the floor. He truly outdid himself.

As a retired player, who has dated an inordinate number of beauties (including some top flight models with name recognition) in my opinion Z’s decision to stay true to his college sweetheart was an example of emotional maturity on his part.

Given the money that was involved there are probably millions of perfect 10s who would have married him in a nanosecond.

Egad, but why would you want to raise children with someone who you wonder if you can trust or can't relate to?

Yes, theoretically, if he shopped around he probably could have found an intelligent prettier beauty who was also of good character (they are our there if you look and don't have your head up your ass). But, shopping takes time and energy, and your mileage may vary.

And then all that energy that went into creating a beautiful bond with someone who he is obviously simpatico with would be lost, no? No amount of money or beauty can substitute for those bonds of understanding... ever in my opinion (okay, call me a romantic but that's probably what got me all the babes...being TDH didn’t hurt either I’m sure).

Regarding whether Whisky is a troll as some commentators have suggested.

I use to wonder that myself once in awhile. But I think he is just the type of person who takes whatever idea he likes to an extreme --- trying to use whatever pet theory he has to explain things where it not applicable or ignoring gray areas.

In defense of Whisky, if he was not around I would surely miss him and the HBD sphere internet world would be a much sadder place.

In addition to providing occasional comic relief he often does have very good insights into different issues that are very useful to think about (okay maybe not "often" but he still has them).

It's just that every time I start to think that he might be on the level he comes out with a doozy.

Very true. Celibacy is an even great time-saver, which is how Sorkin portrays Zuckerberg's lifestyle in The Social Network (besides a "quickie" in a bathroom stall). Zuckerberg, unlike Saverin and Parker, is not distracted by women.

Asian wife, silly (and vaguely gay, actually - real men don't do Facebook) 'social net' website. A screaming beta.

I hope you're being sarcastic. Both Zuckerberg and Obama have homely, non-white wives, and both men could be characterized as vaguely gay. However, they are definitely not "screaming beta"s. Oh well. I guess it's part of the transvaluation of all values that white men now define alpha males by their women.

I saw Berkowitz speak in NYC last year, at the local chapter of the American Association of Individual Investors. At one point, he was asked about his investment in the St. Joe Company, (JOE), the owner of a big swath of Florida panhandle land and one of the barking dogs in Berkowitz's portfolio. His answer was one of two that touched on his non-affluent roots. From my notes on the Q&A:

Q: Why did you become chairman of St. Joe Co. (JOE)?

A: I grew up in an apartment and never had a backyard, so I thought 600k acres would be a lot of fun. It's a small position, a work in progress. Serious answer: because a brand new, international airport opened up last May. The airport is doing better than expected. We need some more time, to understand what we have.

Q: What motivated you to enter the portfolio management business?

A: Money. I didn't grow up with a lot of it, and I wanted to do better than my parents.

Whiskey makes one good point here.

A handsome, athletic, fun, and charismatic man will outdo a boring reliable provider type in the dating market generally. Women like what they like, much like men like beautiful women over homely chics. It's hardwired from evolution.

Whiskey goes downhill when he assumes

a.) Being a billionare/millionaire can't overcome that. Untrue.

Women like money. Heck, I've seen ordinary looking Asian and Indian guys with non-ugly white women.... How? Well the guys were doctors. With billions in dollars, Zuckerberg can have his choice that a typical programmer could not.
b.) Scoring with lots of attractive is the key to happiness. It's not.

Mongomay with someone you like is better. Zuckerberg has used his stratospheric IQ to figure out something Whiskey never could.

Half Sigma (blogger) once found that happiness decreases with sexual partners....
c.) Sexy and handsome are all that matter. Wrong again.

Being hypersuccessful in anything (business, profession, ping pong) draws people to you, including women. If Whiskey invented Facebook, women would be chasing him.

Unfortunately for the average unattractive man, he's not going to be hypersuccessful or super rich, but he'd like to be picking up hot girls in the clubs. So he ends up posting endless amounts of nonsense on Steve Sailer's blog about alphas, betas, speedboat invasions, caliphates, Scots Irish, and white women HATE HATE HATE. It's a release valve.

I agree that just sitting on the couch all the time isn't going to help you in any way. But there are also many "hypersuccesses" that are not too helpful socially. Wikipedia authoring? Star Trek trivia? Chess?

Even in the world of pro sports, success in some sports comes with more "draw" than others. Moe Norman, Gordie Howe, Wayne Gretzky (all solid monogamists, BTW) didn't have a harem of 16-year-old groupies as did Wilt Chamberlain or Joe Namath.

The idea is that patriarchy, traditional gender norms, monogamy, etc. can serve as a "safety net" so that pretty much every guy will be able to land a girl even if he isn't a major success. And if a guy hits the jackpot he'll be able to have multiple hot women.

Why does the provider have to be boring? A lot of reliable guys I know have a bunch of interests and quirky personalities. Plus, people who make it into good schools and become professionals are often very well rounded, with all kinds of musical, sports and other interesting skills and experiences. Drunk frat boys are boring. Nerds and geeks are interesting. Of course, just as it is for women, an interesting personality often can't make up for obesity and other ugly physical attributes. But it can make an average looking guy attractive.

Plus, while listing sexy male traits, you forgot intelligence. To me, that first scene of the Social Network is basically porn. Real men dominate with their intellects. A stronger than female's body is required too, but if that's all it took, women would sleep with gorillas and great danes. (Yeah, yeah, some do. Why don't you go marry them, pervert.) Anyway... I, personally, like a man who can appreciate my intellect, from above. It makes me feel secure, feminine and turned on.

Anonymous said...

Maya, interesting. I've met women who are into smart and quirky men, and many of these men have musical and athletic interests without much overhanging ego. Often the women tend to be smart and quirky themselves. Their relationships often work out pretty well and they produce good children. Zuckerberg is exhibit A.

Definitely intellectual women would rather enjoy the company of intellectual men, but the vast majority of women are not especially smart.... and don't appreciate a man being educated/high-IQ, except to the extent it generates cash and respect. (Doctors over PHDs). A muscular and self assured fratboy can command more attention than the quirky programmer among the masses. When I said sexy > reliable, I was referring to them.

Fortunately this is a diverse country and every woman has her own preferences, so a successful nerd can find a wife too... or just marry an Asian chick.

On the Heartiste blog, there's more discussion on the study that found a sample of women preferred sexy/fun men over reliable providers for marriage. You may not agree with your fellow females, but it's an interesting look at female sexual pysche.

Anonymous said...

but the vast majority of women are not especially smart.... and don't appreciate a man being educated/high-IQ,

Have you considered that maybe most of the high-IQ men are not interested in average women? Not so much because of elitism, but because we recognize the personality traits that will result in a successful relationship.

We're not looking for a "sample of women". High achievers are looking for someone who comes from a background they can relate to in some way. Not all of us find satisfaction in hookups, and we know better than to get married to the insecure frat girls.

We're painted as disfunctional for ignoring the advice of the man-o-sphere and then when Zuckerberg finds the girl of his dreams, he gets heckled and laughed at. Pathetic.

It's amazing how discussions of sexuality brings to light the tormented psyche that so many people here have. You could write an entire study from the contents of these comments.

NOTA said...

Yeah, after about age sixteen, I don't think I dated a single girl who wasn't fairly intelligent--at least at the level of being able to have a serious conversation about real stuff. Partly, that's made easier by going off to college and later having an intellectually demanding job, but a lot of it is just what you want, seeking girls in coffeeshops rather than smoky bars, etc.

This isn't uncommon in my circle of friends at all--most everyone I know who gets married marries someone pretty bright.

One interesting dynamic is that because of the difference in variances in intelligence between women and men, at the high end, you expect somewhat smarter men than women, whereas at the low end, you expect somewhat smarter women than men. So it's not uncommon to see a lot of couples where both are smart, accomplished people, but the man is a little smarter than the woman. And on the other end, it's not so uncommon to see couples or families where the woman is the brains of the operation, and if she falls sick or something, everything comes apart because there's no one providing adult supervision.

Anonymous said...

"I, pesonally" either betrays insecurity or tells that your public persona claims different things.
Either way if you read isteve comments to get off, you are really perverted, more than the great danes and gorilla loving girls, and should leave this blog.

Seriously, what's more perverted than being attracted to someone's brains? yuck.

"and then when Zuckerberg finds the girl of his dreams,"

Then the lad has no imagination? Or the poor kid grew up with lots of manga and asian nannies?

"Even in the world of pro sports, success in some sports comes with more "draw" than others. Moe Norman, Gordie Howe, Wayne Gretzky (all solid monogamists, BTW) didn't have a harem of 16-year-old groupies as did Wilt Chamberlain or Joe Namath."

Moe Norman? Really?

the single most psychopathic financial crook whom the world has ever seen

Check it out: The Financial Industry Regulatory Authority's chairman said on Tuesday that regulators plan to review allegations that Morgan Stanley shared negative news before Facebook's initial public offering with institutional investors...

I tried to get Steve interested in this general line of inquiry because his favorite Russophile played such a very prominent role in the, ah, "creation" of Facebook.

Arnold banged more high-end women between his fourth and fifth Mr. Olympia than Brad Pitt has in his whole life

I'd guess that's true, and it's not a knock on Pitt. Women were far more attractive in the 70's than they've been since 1990.

Yeah I agree with Truth, shoulda gone with Jack Nicklaus. By the way, anyone hear the one about Chicago Shirley? She's at the MVP awards, and as the winner is introduced, she yells out, "and the worst lay in the National League!"

Moe Norman?

It's a Canadian thing. Moe Norman was this Canadian golfer widely believed to have the purest swing ever, but whose career never amounted to much due to his eccentricities.

THIS!!!

I could write a 5000 word essay on the topic...

Steve - here's a screenshot of tonight's Drudge Report detailing all the havoc & chaos wreaked by that little psychopath.

Or the prejudices of the golf establishment, in Canada and doubly so in the US.

And they dressed better, too.

"To me, that first scene of the Social Network is basically porn. Real men dominate with their intellects."

Really? That first scene was obviously intended to portray Zuck as a nasty, bitter, obsessive little dickhead. Far from seeming to dominate with his intellect, he came off as a spastic dweeb with ADHD.

It's now Wednesday morning, and Drudge is going to town on this fiasco.

Well, congratulations on proving that virulent sexism and knuckledragging he-man woman "tolerating" sentiments run all up and down the spectrum of IQ.

There is a reason that geeks don't get the "hot girl" and it has nothing to do with women aligning to the one dimensional stereotypes that are being hemmed and hawed in this post.

If you think I'm going to tell you I won't, mainly because I'm not female but also because as men you deserve to figure it out yourselves instead of sitting on your alpha/beta asses and have it spoon fed to you.
