Matt Damon on Blomkamp's inspirations

A few more quotes from insiders on Neill Blomkamp's movies, showing how far off the critical consensus is.

Matt Damon in the Miami Herald on Elysium's open borders dystopia and on District 9's inspiration in Zimbabwean illegal immigrants.

Matt explains that he should play a Los Angeleno in 2154, even though the future LA population appears to be 99% mestizo (the extras are from the slums of Mexico City, where the L.A. scenes were shot). The only exceptions are Matt, the delicate-looking Diego Luna, the son of Mexico's top set designer, who looks kind of like an Albrecht Durer self-portrait, and two Brazilian actors, the brains of the gangsters, Wagner Moura (Elite Squad), and the nice nurse, Alice Braga (niece of Sonja Braga of The Two Husbands of Dona Flor).
“In terms of the ethnicity of the people left behind on Earth, [director] Neill [Blomkamp] wanted to suggest that the borders of the entire Western atmosphere [?] were all porous now. There was no point in having borders because there were no resources anywhere. So you end up with all these languages spoken and all these different ethnicities. There are a lot of Latinos, but there are a lot of white people, too. More than anything, it was about economic deprivation. There is nothing left on the planet, and we’re all trying to scratch out our existence. He wanted to create the feeling that we’re all in this soup together.”

So, under no borders, all those brown people will still need a white hero to lead them, like in Lawrence of Arabia on down. The reporter writes:
Like Blomkamp’s debut film, 2009’s Oscar-nominated District 9, an allegory about apartheid, Elysium lays out its social commentary early and clearly, then sets out to give the audience a breakneck ride. The movie’s prime objective is to entertain, not preach, so it’s only after the end credits have rolled that you start contemplating its exploration of class differences and the importance of universal health care.

Okay, except that Damon goes on to explain to the oblivious interviewer what District 9 was really about:
“Neill doesn’t aspire to make message movies,” Damon says. “I’ve thought more about the themes in District 9 than I would have if it had been a straight-up movie about Zimbabwe and refugees from South Africa. The aesthetic of science-fiction makes it really interesting and cool, but it’s also ripe for meaning and interpretation. You sit and reflect on it. It sits with you longer, I think.”

Blomkamp on the distinctly post-aparthed inspiration for District 9:
I was asking black South Africans about black Nigerians and Zimbabweans. That's actually where the idea came from was there are aliens living in South Africa, I asked "What do you feel about Zimbabwean Africans living here?" And those answers — they weren't actors, those are real answers...

Blomkamp being interviewed by the Wall Street Journal:
WSJ: “Elysium” takes on topics of class, health care, and immigration. What prompted you to address these issues?
Blomkamp: I don’t know if “addressing issues” is the right way of putting it, because if you go about things with the mindset where you wake up one morning and go, “I’m going to address this important political issue,” you shouldn’t be making popcorn blockbuster films. ...
I think growing up in South Africa, and then moving to Canada, I’m just genuinely interested in the difference between the first world and the third world, immigration, and how the new, globalized world is beginning to operate. All of those things run through my mind a lot.

Having read all these interviews with Blomkamp, who isn't the most seamlessly articulate guy in the world (at least not in English), his recurrent tic is that whenever he brings up a topic -- Malthusianism, transhumanism, immigration, etc. -- that he knows the interviewer will automatically interpret differently than he does, he just says he finds the subject "interesting."
WSJ: Do you think of this film in terms of First World vs. Third World rather than 1% vs. 99%?

Blomkamp: They’re not exactly the same. The 1% lexicon of phrases and terminology is incredibly American. That’s very specific to America. This film isn’t really that. It’s much more international. The 1% is a catchphrase that is thrown around at the moment. You could go back to the feudal ages and you have people living in castles and you have a thousand serfs on your land that were considered your property. This is nothing new at all. That kind of separation between power and wealth and then the working class, the poverty-stricken class, has been around for millennia. What’s happening now with this globalized planet is there are other ingredients being mixed into that. The way that those population groups move, like how Africa is predominantly poverty-stricken, and North America predominantly has money — whether America is in a recession or not isn’t the point, the point is the glass of America appears a lot fuller than the glass of Africa. As those reservoirs of wealth equalize, the pockets of wealth diminish and the poorer areas increase in wealth, a lot of really interesting stuff happens. Part of that is the rich try to preserve what they have more, while the poor want wealth more at the same time. The movie is really about that.

I don't know. It seemed to me like the people in Elysium had a real good thing going until Damon and company arrived to screw it up for them.

Diego Luna was on Conan recently:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NFZY_o0QoJk

At around 1:35 in the clip, Conan starts talking about how Elysium prophesies that in the future everyone in LA will speak Spanish. Diego starts talking somewhat triumphantly that millions already speak Spanish in the US and soon everyone will. He remarks that 47 million people in the US speak Spanish today and that "we like having sex, so multiply that for 10 years..." He then goes on to teach Conan some vulgar slang for survival Spanish.

Again, you're wrong Steve.

Here's James Kilpatrick's review where he directly contradicts you.

One of you has to be wrong. Either Elysium is an open borders paen that argues that "White racism" is causing non-Whites to be poor, by "hogging" all the technology that Whites create and using slave labor in the Third World, or its "subversive" ... or something.

I think you're entirely too emotionally invested in the idea that the people in Hollywood really don't want to exterminate you and yours. Sadly, they do. That includes IMHO guys like Blomkamp. He's got his. He makes millions. You? Yours? Me? Mine? Us he will happily consign to the trash heap.

Its like Nixon supporters. They ate up Oliver Stone's "Secret Honor of Richard Nixon." Here was a guy who said he was the tribune of the silent majority, who was going to stop and reverse all the abuses of LBJ. And ... Nixon went to China. Instituted Detente. Gave us the EPA and Affirmative Action. All the things he said he would undo, he did more than Lydon Baines Johnson. And all the criticisms of liberals proved correct: Nixon was a creep and lunatic. Hence the search for some "secret honor" in one of the worst Presidents (barring Obama) in American history.

It sucks to be taken in by the glitz and glamor. But if you look at the evidence, Blomkamp's movie is all about how White guys have a duty to die for Mexican single mothers so the Third World can be saved. Because the only thing keeping them down is evil White racism from above. Literally.

Matt Damon is pretty good about sussing out hard-left anti-White stuff. His films reflect a hate of America and average White Americans as much as Barack Obama and Valerie Jarret and Michelle Obama combined.

Jeez, the guy who made Green Zone and the Bourne movies is in another movie and anyone doubts it is against White America? Come on.

District 9 might have been inspired by Zimbabwean immigration, but it would be oversimplifying to say that therefore it's not "about" apartheid. It's "about" both, if "apartheid" includes the apartheid regime. In fact, the story deals more with the powerful whites' relation to the prawns than to the coloreds' relation to the prawns. So it's just as wrong to say that District 9 isn't about apartheid as it's wrong to call it "an allegory about apartheid."

Blomkamp is trying to make honest movies rather than political propaganda, so he doesn't fit the agendas of the left or the right.

La's illegal population is slowing since its expensive to live even with some day labor jobs for illegals. Most of the illegals kids and grand kids will live in the Inland Empire or Kern or Fresno, since their Hispanic populations have jumped 10 percent in the past decade and many Mexicans have moved there, even US Census shows this. People will hate me here for this I predict Houston Texas to have the largest percentage of Mexicans in 2060 for a large city in the top 10, why its cheaper than California and the city is known now as the 3rd worst city for illegal immigrants. I predict La only 55 percent Mexican and maybe as high as 25 to 30 percent Asian, Chinese company in droves to some La cities in the San Gabriel and Houston Texas 60 percent Mexican in 2060, its now 43 and La is only 48.

That sounds about right. And when you consider Blomkamp's comments about crime in post-Apartheid South Africa, District 9 starts to look more clearly like an apologia for apartheid. The movie's basically saying, "Yeah, it's not nice to keep these prawns cooped up like this -- particularly considering that 2 of the millions of them are sympathetic characters -- but what's the alternative? These prawns would wreak havoc if we didn't keep them locked up."

Blomkamp throws in the Nigerian gangsters and the Zimbabwean refugees in interviews and that muddies the waters enough to keep him from getting pinned down. But it would make for an interesting interview if someone did pin him down.

WWZ roots for 1% against 99%, and ELYS-ISLAND-SIUM roots for 99% against the 1%... but not because Blom likes the 99% but because he feels that the globo-elites have betrayed and abandoned the white masses, in which case the white masses have no choice but to side with the 99% of third world masses against the elites.

I think Jim Webb feels sort of like this. The corpo-elites have abandoned the white masses, and so, it's come down to class warfare since whites are doomed as a race anyway. If GOP goes, that's the only card left for white conservatives. Side with browns, unions, and even blacks against the Jew-homo-liberal-wasp-mulatto elites.

PS. WWZ's ending reminds me of the MASADA. Good TV movie.

PSS. As for journalists willfully misinterpreting people like Blom, when narrative has become fact, print the narrative.

Go watch "The Adjustment Bureau". The basic idea that I can see is that a white guy and a white girl want to get married and procreate instead of mindlessly contributing to "productivity" or whatever. Originally that wasn't the plan that TPTB had for them, but after some fighting, TPTB changed the plan. Basically, PC as white genocide is wrong path, let's go back.

And as far as the Bourne films go, I'm not seeing what you are driving at. Have you read the first book? Bourne goes attacking a former Nazi prison guard (from memory), which the movie excised (again, from memory).

The standard Hollywood format for 60 years has been shiny white hero character goes *against* his group to help the non-white group.

It's incredibly anti-white meme-poison while at the same time seeming excessively pro-white, even racist to non-white viewers.

The key aspect in all the 100s of movie examples of this meme poison is that the white hero is only a hero because he goes against his own group.

Mass bluecollar immigration is always the same because it always follows the same basic logic.

1) The immigrants are disproportionately young men.

2) The congregate in the same area for social and security reasons.

3) There is competition for women.

Among whitecollar populations that combination of factors might lead to lots of competition for medical and law school places but in bluecollar populations it means violence and lots of it and because the incoming population have a local superiority of young men the majority of that violence is inflicted on the recieving population.

It always happens the same way.

When black people first pushed the white bluecollar population out of the bluecollar neighborhoods in LA most of the victims were white. Now hispanics are the incoming population and blacks are the recieving population blacks are most of the victims.

It's why the vast majority of victims of inter-ethnic violence since the western world was cursed with mass immigration have been white - not that the media will ever admit it.

It doesn't even require different ethnic or racial groups. If you have a settled population anywhere and then you import lots of young men even of the same ethnic group but from a different region you still get the same thing.

It's the dark heart of mass immigration which the media has lied about for 50 years.

But do all whites get the profits from such "hogging" and slave labor? Remember corporate shares (and corresponding profits) are owned by the rich, to a great degree.

Once again the white working class majority is the proxy goat to take the blame for the crimes of the rich whites. Civil War, slaveowners, white race guilt, redux, ad infinitum, same as it ever was....

The takeaway: White America is not a monolith, although the media and the publications you read and the TV you watch will tell you that.

Elysium: Pro Immigration Propaganda?

alice cullen rules said...

Global elites pushed horizontal open borders while they hover over us. So, as revenge, the masses in ELYSIUM demand vertical open ladders so that the globo-elites cannot snobbishly hover over them.

As elysium freely flies all over the globe, it is horizontally open borders. Buy it is closed ladders. It is vertically shut.

If the elites swamp me with the third world, i'm gonna join with the zombie masses to bring the elites down... just like when Rome was sacked. Revenge. Rome too was open borders and closed ladders... until the barbarians crossed not only the borders but climbed the ladders to drag everyone down.

Gadfly also played the game of open borders and closed ladders until his people had just about enough. And the globo-elysium didn't rescue him but armed the masses to tear him apart. Globo-elites said to Gaddy, 'you're not one of us.'

So, ELYSIUM isn't about 'open borders' vs 'closed borders'. It's about what happens in a world of open borders + closed ladders.

Is Blom pulling an Alinskyite-ism?
Alinsium?

Politicians often lie to get elected. They hide their true agendas, like when Clinton signed DOMA or when Obama said he's gonna be tough on Wall Street and make government transparent. Vell?

Big entertainment is political in the sense that you have shmooze the moneymen, media, and the pc-brainwashed masses into believing that you're an okay guy.

So, there is the ideological politics of ELYSIUM but also the pragmatic 'electoral' politics of the movie.
What did Blom need to do to get it made? If he could have it totally the way he wanted to, would it have been very different?

We mustn't confuse ideological politics with pragmatic politics. Maybe Blom really does believe in the ideology put forth in the movie. Or maybe he used it as PC-approved pitch to slip through taboo ideas sub-ideologically.

Obama ran by supporting traditional marriage but then switched his position as president.
Never trust politicians and entertainers.

PS. I sometimes wonder about Glenn Beck. He officially says he loves Jews and Israel, but in the show about the 10 most dangerous people of the 20th century, like 9 out of 10 were Jews.

Jalice said...

There seems to be a horizontal vs vertical thing in WWZ as well.
In most zombie movies, the ghouls pose a horizontal threat. No matter how many there are, if you can erect barriers against them, they cannot get through. And you can safely look down on them from the rooftop.

But in WWZ--based on what I heard and saw of clips on youtube--, it seems not even skyscrapers and helicopters are safe from zombie attacks for these zombies have found a way to carry out vertical attacks by forming zombie ladders.

Maybe this vertical fixation is an expression of the anxieties of the global elites in a world that is increasingly open borders. They have much to profit from globalism and open borders, but they also wanna live in globotopias for the 'best kind of people', and you have to be rich in order to live in such places, especially the high rise condos in places like Manhattan. Apartmentheid.

But what if open borders destroy mass culture and transform the masses into mobs, and what if the mobs figure out a way to attack vertically as well?

NYers are probably wondering about that as Stop-and-Frisk-the-black-zombies or zombros is no more.

There was no point in having borders because there were no resources anywhere.

Matt Damon attributes this interpretation to Blomkamp. Interesting if so, because it seems totally severed from reality. The implication is that people erect borders solely in order to safeguard resources. In other words, if mass migration weren't a net drain on resources, no one would mind it. If this is really Blomkamp's view and not just Damon's, then maybe Blomkamp isn't so clear-eyed on this stuff as we thought he was.

I just saw the movie and I agree with Steve - this is a sneaky one. It is very good. Is it perfect? No - but then again how else could a movie with these themes and this type of budget get made otherwise?

What makes the movie is its visuals. Very few futuristic movies realistically depict the results of our current policies today. When you make a movie like Elysium you don't have to say anything in dialogue because the visuals say it all. It is does not matter how much mental liberal pinball you play - those visuals will get through.

For example, I saw it with a friend who is the standard 30-something liberal female. Her reaction 30 minutes into the movie was: in 2154 LA will be Hispanic? Her tone was that of a person who was semi-shocked. And that to me is priceless. Not everything has to be spelled out to be effective.

You see - the vast majority of the population just doesn't get it. They don't understand that our current immigration policies plus our racial preference policies assure the end of the white race in many areas - if not everywhere. They really don't see the connection. It's the weakness of the white race. Good military, not so good politically.

The good news is that as the current system becomes more and more removed from reality (kind of like communism was) then we don't have to come out with sophisticated propaganda. Messages will be transmitted by the revolutionary acts of speaking the truth. And if truth is too much then glimpses of truth will have to do. Like in Elysium - glimpses of truth. Bravo!

I can see Open Borders working sort of between Germany and Poland. Racially similar, historically connected, comparable size. And though Germany is richer, Poland is catching up and has lots of talent and is moving up. So, while some poles will go work in Germany and some Germans will go work in Poland, most people will stay put.

But imagine open borders between Thailand and China. If all the people of Thailand moved to China, it'd be a drop in the bucket and China would still be China as there are so many Chinese. But if just 1/20th of the people of China(65 million) moved to Thailand, Thailand would no longer be Thailand. Nearly half its population would be Chinese.

Similarly, if all the people of Lithuania moved to Russia, Russia would still be Russia. But if just 5 million Russians moved to Lithuania(with a pop of 3.3 million), you can kiss Lithuania goodbye as a culture and nation.

Lakes are good. Flooding is bad.
It's funny that Liberals, who yammer endlessly about global warming and how the earth is gonna be flooded by sea water, fail to see the danger of demographic drowning of nations... even as they support Israel's right to keep its national shores filled with levees against the Muslim/Arab tide.
Don't drown Israel but drown the West?

Liberals care about melting white glaciers in the Arctic and worry about rising sea waters.. but they don't worry about the melting white populations and their being drowned by the non-white tide of massive immigration tides.

Why isn't Elysium overpopulated?
