I haven't checked any out of these shocking rumors being heavily flogged by anti-Palin parties such as Andrew Sullivan and Daily Kos for factuality, I just want to give you my impression of how they'll strike average Americans (especially average American women):
- Palin was already pregnant when she got married two decades ago!
Let's see, you're saying the beauty queen/point guard and the oilfield roughneck/Bering Strait fisherman couldn't keep their hands off each other, got pregnant, got married, had lots more kids, and are together 20 years later? Wow, that's the most appalling thing I ever heard.
- The governor didn't really just have a baby at 44, it's actually her teenage daughter's, but she's raising the baby as her own!
Gee, that never happened before in the history of the world ... except that's how Jack Nicholson, Bobby Darrin (see Kevin Spacey's nice biopic "Beyond the Sea"), Thomas Sowell (in a slightly more complicated version), and a quite a few less famous people were brought up. It lets the inexperienced teen finish her education and find a husband unencumbered by another guy's kid. The girl escapes being a "single mom" while maintaining a close relationship as an "aunt" with her child, as her experienced and better-financed mom oversees raising the kid. I'm not saying it's the only or ideal way to handle such matters, but more than a few people have chosen it as the best solution in a difficult situation. Indeed, it might help get Palin off the hook with the more maternal women who are uncertain about her going on the campaign trail so soon after having a baby.
As I said, I haven't checked into the facts regarding these rumors. I'm all in favor of as many people as possible checking out rumors as soon as possible (in sharp contrast to Barack Obama's 20-year-relationship with Jeremiah Wright, which the media paid almost no attention to until March 13, 2008 when the primaries were largely over). What I am saying is that a lot of Primarily Political People are clueless about how most people think.
Overall, what we can say for sure about Palin is: she Has A Life. In contrast to undersexed Hillary Clinton's cautious, cramped biography, Palin's life story just makes you feel sorry for poor Hillary.
The unanswered question, though, is whether, being a woman, Palin has too much of a life to have mastered her career skills enough. With a male executive with four or five kids, like, say, Mitt Romney, nobody worries about whether his having a life means he can't also rescue the Salt Lake City Olympics. We just assume that he has a wife who takes care of domestic concerns while he focuses on his career. But with a female executive with such a rich home life, can she really have been devoting enough of her attention to public life?
But, of course, while that's a good question, it's also a sexist one. I look forward to Obama and Biden trying to figure out how to handle it.

Jesus effing Christ, have you lost your mind?
ReplyDeleteThe "rumors", if that's what you wish to call them, consist of a few dirtbags who hate anything and anyone to the right of Che (which targets of course include yourself), typing it and posting it somewhere.
Um, there are pics of her quite fat, not to mention numerous people who are willing to state they saw her in such a way, I'll bet after they wonder just what on earth would prompt such a question.
Why in the world would you do your little part to spread unbelievable manure like this and slander a 16-year old girl? To show your bona fides as a non-partisan? Because you looked beyond Barry H's official biography, and you want to be "fair"?
Would you print something like that about Michelle O? Because someone, somewhere typed it?
Jesus gawd almighty.
Steve- you are on it. Sullivan is pushing this hard and Ace is rebutting hard. You seem to think this may be true. Wild, if so. Love Palin- but would this kill her nomination? You never addressed that. Surprised if true- wouldn't this have come out during vetting?
ReplyDeleteBTW did anyone ever notice that Beau Biden looks EXACTLY like a cross between Michael Scott and Andy Bernard???
http://cache.daylife.com/imageserve/0bs1a1703Zfgz/610x.jpg
oh yeah, don't women over 40 have a much greater risk of a downs baby? Wait, don't answer that- they do.
ReplyDelete"Because you looked beyond Barry H's official biography, and you want to be "fair"?"
ReplyDeleteDidn't Steve just pick most of the stuff up from... Obama's official biography? :P
I regularly check out the liberal press/blogs, and the hatred directed at Palin is almost unbelievable. I wonder if liberals don't genuinely have some sort of mental neurosis that forces them to hate anything healthy and beautiful, and love anything violent and ugly and pathetic.
ReplyDeleteHave you seen the alleged nude pics of her doing the rounds?
ReplyDeleteAmazing that someone would try to claim the 16 yo would have a Down's Syndrome child. Is the name Trig supposed to signify that she met the father in math class. ; ) Ah, true love. I guess accutane caused the Down's.
ReplyDeleteAs for the other rumor, was Palin a nun in another life? Or are they insinuating that she was a virgin until meeting Mr Palin & would have had an untroubled path to the presidency if she had only saved herself until the wedding night?
Long Live the Virgin Beauty Queen!
"oh yeah, don't women over 40 have a much greater risk of a downs baby? Wait, don't answer that- they do."
ReplyDeleteOnly by a factor of 40 or so compared to a 16-year old - so disregard that aspect.
Also, it has to have been quite arduous wearing that (actualy rather convincing) fatsuit for all those months, if the pictures plastered all over the net are to be believed. Indeed - she also cleverly planted moles in advance to pack up her claims of "pregnancy".
http://www.polartrec.com/node/3944
"Of course I had to check out the “Hottest Governor in the US” and quickly turned to see her pregnant (she has since had her baby) with bags and daughter in tote."
So, premarital sex and out-of-wedlock babies are a bad thing for society, except when they're done by someone who is line to become leader of our country?
ReplyDeleteBut extra-marital affairs are bad for society AND bad when done byour country's leader, but NOT bad when done by a Republican Congressman.
Man, I need a rulebook to keep up with right-wing morals.
"Clapton grew up with his grandmother, Rose, and her second husband Jack, believing they were his parents and that his mother was his older sister."
ReplyDeletehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_Clapton#Early_years
So, premarital sex and out-of-wedlock babies are a bad thing for society, except when they're done by someone who is line to become leader of our country?
ReplyDeleteI don't recall Steve ever writing about pre-marital sex. While he writes quite often about out of wedlock babies, A) it's mostly about the general social effects, not condemning individuals and B) Bristol Palin is about the 250 millionth person in line for the presidency. I don't think she's trying at all.
Also, what the heck has happened with Half Sigma and his coverage of this?
The rumors are very true... see:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-Es5aIJl1g&feature=related
The real question is whether she'll get some sympathy votes.
Sullivan just posted pics confirming her pregnancy. Pretty embarassing that he was so ready to believe such a long shot. As stated earlier (by me) a sixteen year old is very unlikely to have a Down's baby in comparison to a 44-year old. How can he not know that? I may stop hanging on his every post....and on that note, I'm no longer a homosexual.
ReplyDeleteSo, premarital sex and out-of-wedlock babies are a bad thing for society, except when they're done by someone who is line to become leader of our country?
ReplyDeleteNo, it's just not that big of a deal if the parents end up getting married. It's more about providing a stable family for the baby than enforcing a behavior code.
But extra-marital affairs are bad for society AND bad when done byour country's leader, but NOT bad when done by a Republican Congressman.
Who said they're OK when done by a Republican Congressman? Take your strawmen back to Daily Kos where you'll get a pat on the back, not here where you will be forced into reality contact.
The anti-Palin hatred is like nothing I've seen from the Left. They hate Bush this much, but it wasn't until a year or two into his first term that it had built up to this pitch. They're throwing everything they have at her. They've apparently decided that Swiftboating is the way to win elections.
ReplyDeleteOther things they've attacked her over:
She had a cop who threatened her father and tazed her nephew fired. They don't understand that this makes her look good, not bad, to normal people who don't share their values of letting yourself be used as a punching bag.
She left Wasilla $20 million in debt (they don't mention that it was for a sports complex which was approved in a referendum).
Basically, they got nothin', but they've worked themselves up into a frenzy over nothing, and they're already doing their victory dance thinking she'll be sunk over nothing. That's the danger of getting all of your news from echo chambers (like Daily Kos).
Someone should rework the teen pregnancy cover-up rumor into a movie pitch.
ReplyDeleteNarrator: "She just got inaugurated as the state's first female governor".
Shot of smiling mom on her first day, sitting at desk in the Governor's office
"And she just missed her period for the second month in a row"
Shot of daughter nervously buying a home pregnancy test
Narrator with ironic tone: "Now to maintain her political image and keep her daughter from losing her dignity, the new governor has to try a bold new strategy."
Shot of mom beginning to speak with fake baby bump in front of a sea of flashing cameras and reporters.
Fill the rest of the trailer with physical comedy antics of the mom in a fat suit and almost forgetting to act pregnant, contrast with funny scenes of the daughter nearly failing to conceal her pregnancy. Then some suspenseful scenes of the press getting wind, follow with a clip of the panicked mother-governor's monologue questioning whether she can continue with the charade, lamenting the overwhelming demands of her career and doing the right thing as a mom, then close with hints of triumphant ending scene of the tearful mom holding her newborn grandson at statehouse photo op.
Seems like a workable plot, by chick flick comedy standards. Can't think of a really good name, though. Governor Mom, though a little too simple, has an okay ring to it.
Also, not meaning to mock either side here, just find the rumor's resemblance to a goofball comedy amusing. I really don't get the enthusiasm over Palin, she is only going to be a trophy VP, as others have pointed out.
"Sullivan just posted pics confirming her pregnancy. Pretty embarassing that he was so ready to believe such a long shot. "
ReplyDeleteIt would once have been embarrassing but Andrew Sullivan has over the last few years descended in credibility to the level of Alex Jones.
It was always obvious that anyone with a skeleton like that in the closet would not run for VP.
They've apparently decided that Swiftboating is the way to win elections.
ReplyDeleteIt worked for the GOP, no?
As for the getting pregnant before marriage, I suspect the elites hold this particular iteration in more abhorrence because it shows a lack of willingness to subordinate your biology to your career. Obviously though they did the right thing.
Raising the teenage daughter's kid as her own is, IMHO, the ethical thing to do, as it lets the daughter avoid disgrace and lets the granddaughter grow up in a good home.
This scenario (passing a child off as someone else's to preserve a young woman's chances in life) is something from a different era. 40 years ago, yes. 20 years ago maybe. But today? Come on. There's a reason the three people Steve cited are all over 70 years old.
ReplyDeleteHalfSigma is also trashing Sarah Palin with turrets' like frequency.
ReplyDeleteHe claims these posts have significantly boosted his blog traffic, but says that's not why he's constantly trashing Palin.
He expressed his hope that Palin would step down and his man Giulliani would take up the VP spot.
This is a clear example of neocons hating on Palin.
"I regularly check out the liberal press/blogs, and the hatred directed at Palin is almost unbelievable. I wonder if liberals don't genuinely have some sort of mental neurosis that forces them to hate anything healthy and beautiful, and love anything violent and ugly and pathetic."
ReplyDeleteI started to wonder that when I realized politicaly correct speech codes get more insane the more violent, ugly and miserable a group is.
Sullivan has made a complete fool of himself with regard to Palin, and this should sink any remaining cred that he has. The guy has just become a raving loon, worse than a lot of the characters over at HuffPo or Kos. And with regard to the "rumors" if this is the best they can do, Palin was one squeeky clean choice.
ReplyDeleteTschafer
People who accuse Palin of being a hypocrite really don't understand the right-wing mentality.
ReplyDeleteI am a religious conservative. I had sex with my wife before marrying her. We even had a pregnancy scare. Had my wife been been pregnant, I would have married her. Fortunately she wasn't, because a quickie marriage followed by a baby seven months later would have been embarrassing, given that we were in our late 20's. We eventually got married about a year and a half later.
We're all sinners. We all fail to live up to our ideals. But we keep striving to better ourselves -- that's the point.
Sure, some people use the idea that we're all sinners to rationalize their own weakness. See, e.g. Bill Clinton. He professed to be a Christian, and I'm sure he felt "guilty" every time he cheated on his wife -- but he kept right on cheating on her, which causes me to doubt the strength and/or sincerity of his religious beliefs. Maybe Bill isn't a hypocrite, maybe he's just an extremely flawed man, but the point is that he isn't doing a very good job of living his beliefs.
But the mere fact that someone has slipped up in the past doesn't mean they are a hypocrite without a moral compass; it means they are human. It's hard to live the right way.
"I wonder if liberals don't genuinely have some sort of mental neurosis that forces them to hate anything healthy and beautiful,"
ReplyDeleteI think it's more to do with Dems going nuts when members of official Democratic victim groups have the nerve to visibly succeed as conservative Republicans. You see the same thing with black conservatives.
"They've apparently decided that Swiftboating is the way to win elections.
It worked for the GOP, no?"
Well, "it" did, the problem is with Democrats deciding that "it" consists of throwing out batshit crazy lies, instead of exposing things the opponent thought safely buried. A case of that classic mistake: Believing your own propaganda.

ReplyDeleteAmong a segment of the republican base, having a 16 yr old daughter become pregnant reflects poorly on the parenting.
ReplyDeleteWho said they're OK when done by a Republican Congressman? Take your strawmen back to Daily Kos where you'll get a pat on the back, not here where you will be forced into reality contact.
ReplyDeleteWhew, I thought someone was going to call me out on my behavior.
Now it is being confirmed that Palin's daughter is following in her mom's slutty footsteps (premarital sex, out-of-wedlock teen pregnancy)
ReplyDeleteIt's rather hilarious that the Palin nomination is embraced by the Ten Commandments crowd. How do these people take themselves seriously?
The rumors put about the liberal/left dirtbags are interesting because even if they are true they are only punching themselves in the face.
ReplyDeleteThats Steve's point. If the dirtbags can be proved to be liars then they will look bad like dirtbags If however SP did pass of her grandchild as her own, well thats only going to score her bonus points.
From the dirtbags pov theyve picked a fight they simply cannot win even on their own terms.
"Raising the teenage daughter's kid as her own is, IMHO, the ethical thing to do, as it lets the daughter avoid disgrace and lets the granddaughter grow up in a good home."
ReplyDeleteDon't forgot for the child, who will grow up treating his mom like his sister.
Finally the right can now masturbate to their own messiah, both figuratively and literally.

Mon Dieu! (Slaps forhead) C'est certainement vrai!
Yeah, a you-tube video, probably made by a Democratic Party die-hard - that's conclusive evidence! How could anyone possibly answer that? And what does it show? Palin's daughter holding her baby brother, in a motherly fashion. Yeah, teenage girls never show affection for their baby brothers. And they have no innate maternal instincts. Those all have to be beaten into them by the patriarchy.
Paddy, you're more full of it than that kids' diapers.
Thomas Sowell, not Clarence Thomas?
ReplyDeleteApparently her unwed teenage daughter IS pregnant. I'm reminded of an earlier pithy comment that said the Republican Party's purpose was to mainstream and legitimize a Marxist agenda. I didn't give this much thrift earlier but having read the comments at the Free Republic, it seems to be rather true. The concept of Shame has disappeared entirely in American culture. Just a few decades ago, Palin would never have been on a Republican platform. A few decades ago, people wouldn't have been applauding a teenage girl shaming her family and encouraging her as if nothing was out of the ordinary. Then again, I doubt the same people cheering would have much good to say about unwed mexican teenage mothers or blacks so I guess things haven't changed as much.
ReplyDeleteLying with statistics.
ReplyDeleteShame on iSteve commet makers!
While the odds of >40 woman having a Downs Syn child ARE much higher, 80% (give or take) of DS children are born to mothers <35 -- Why? Because <35s are the one's having the babies in this world. So the idea that only older mothers have DS kids is complete BS. If you look at the odds from the child's perspective the odds are much greater that your mom is under 35 when you are born.
First of all, the Left hates Sarah Palin because her nomination lessens the impact of Obama's nom. They rejected a woman in order to nominate a black man; I wouldn't say the Republicans trumped that "breakthrough," but they matched it pretty well.
ReplyDeleteBut, really, the Left hates Palin because she is a woman who is clearly not a feminist in the way they understand the term - not only in her political positions but in her life - but who has achieved worldly success.
People on the social left dislike anyone on the right; they hate anyone who belongs to one of "their" groups - that is, anyone not a white, straight male - on the right; but they reserve a special loathing for anyone who is in the latter category who ALSO succeeds in a way that seems to undercut the theory that success can only come to the "oppressed" through victimhood and leftist politics.
We now learn that Palin's 17-year-old daughter is pregnant. She is keeping the baby and - key point - marrying the baby's father. I predict that this will do Palin absolutely no harm among conservatives. Girls have been getting pregnant out of wedlock forever; everyone knows that. It's what happens afterwards that matters, and the fact that she is marrying the father and starting a family will be a plus for the Palin candidacy, not a minus.
"But with a female executive with such a rich home life, can she really have been devoting enough of her attention to public life?"
ReplyDeleteYou put your finger on it. Short answer is good God no. Has she ever heard of a nanny? If a governor of the most affluent society in history can't afford a friggin' nanny or hired help of any kind then who can? Remember the TV show Benson? Wasn't that long ago.
Seriously, why no nannies and au pairs in America? I'm not rich or American, someone please explain the antinannyism to me. I get the illegal angle and nonpayment of SS angle, I even read the Bonfire of the Vanities angle, still...
"But the mere fact that someone has slipped up in the past doesn't mean they are a hypocrite without a moral compass; it means they are human. It's hard to live the right way."
ReplyDeleteBravo.
"But with a female executive with such a rich home life, can she really have been devoting enough of her attention to public life?"
ReplyDeleteWrong again Sailer. ; ) Obviously, Palin has been devoting too much of her attention to public life. So much so that her children are behaving more like the proverbial latch-key children than the offspring of a two-parent family.
What a message it would send if Palin withdrew from the VP slot in order to put her family life in order. But you have to wonder if the McCain camp was aware of the teen daughter's pregnancy. If they weren't, what a goof but, if they did know beforehand, what is their intention?
Any way to find out if McCain had advanced warning of the 17 year olds pregnancy? Of course this could explain his deer in the headlights expression while making the announcement that the RNC would be pre-empted on behalf of the potential victims of Hurricane Gustav.
"Seriously, why no nannies and au pairs in America? I'm not rich or American, someone please explain the antinannyism to me." - peon
We have nannies. I've met people with nannies who were foreign exchange students. There was also the infamous nanny murder trial a few years back. And there are politicians who have had to withdraw from nominations because of illegal nannies. What do you mean there are no nannies?
Palin's biggest potential problem is not the rumours but what will happen in the matter of the fired trooper. While I'm sure a lot of people would love to tear the eyes out of their ex-brother or ex- sister in laws in custody cases, firing somebody for not firing may create actual legal problems.
ReplyDeleteAnother important point re: hypocrisy.
ReplyDeleteWhen someone is hypocritical about rightist ideals -- when they do drugs, cheat on their wife, etc. -- it usually makes their life *worse*.
Whereas when someone is hypocritical about leftist ideals -- when they have a traditional marriage, live in a gentrified neighborhood, or make a lot of money -- it makes their life *better*.
This is the fundamental asymmetry. Live by leftist ideals -- feminism, strident anti-racism, anti-capitalism -- and your life is *worse*.
Come on people, let's focus on the real failure of judgement here, who names their daughter "Bristol"? Track and Trig are goofy sounding too, but they're workable for boys. Bristol, on the other hand, is just an awful name to give a girl. Not only is it a traditionally a name for a boy, but the sound of it is brutally masculine. I'm not an expert on phonaesthetics but the final low vowel seems to clearly convey heft, size, amorphousness (look up phonothesia if you're unfamiliar with this). Okay for a boy, awful for a girl. With a name like Bristol, she's constantly going to feel insecure about her femininity, perhaps eventually so insecure she feels she had to put out early for a boy to prove her womanliness? Could this whole mess been avoided by naming her Madeline or Stephanie?
ReplyDeleteOn second thought, I've been thinking of Bristol in the "Bristol Myers Squib" pronunciation, perhaps it's not as masculine if the second vowel is neutralized, sounding like it would rhyme with Crystal. Still, a fairly lousey name. Do we really want someone with that kind of lack of judgment potentially one day getting the 3 AM call?
"When someone is hypocritical about rightist ideals..."
ReplyDeleteCongrats, anonymous that was quite possibly the dumbest thing I've ever read
"Why in the world would you do your little part to spread unbelievable manure like this and slander a 16-year old girl?..."
ReplyDeleteRemember that old song:
"what a difference a day-makesss
Just 24 lonely ow-errrs."
The whole point of Keeping Your Daughter off the Pole, is to keep her from getting knocked up and/or hitched to some loser. Both of which Palin's kid is into.
ReplyDeleteThis is exactly why people believe in abortion. Gimme a break. If this were my kid she wouldd have had an abortion by already. This is insane. Everyone would do the same unless they're idiots.
Just another reason to vote against McCain afaic.
Steve,
ReplyDeletePalin is going to blind side most of the Nation. She is an energy expert.

Here, here. That irked me the moment I saw it, too. I hate these new, stupid-sounding vanity names that people saddle their children with. Do people who have names like "Sarah" take for granted what an advantage it is to have a real name, rather than track, trick, trump, or whatever.
My wife and I spent more time thinking of a name for our dog than many people do for their kids nowadays.
Yeah, socon Republicans have come to accept human biology, developed a social structure to deal with it, and that is a failing.
ReplyDeleteCould some one please explain the problem? Because, you know I'm kinda slow.
I thought that rational people were trying to get the socons to face facts. And now that they face facts some want to hold it against them.
Is it that you need a totem for your two minutes of hate (another human fact). I once had a guru who thought we should hate the Planet Saturn. It was sufficiently far away at the time that it wouldn't have mattered.
firing somebody for not firing may create actual legal problems.
ReplyDeleteAs I understand it it was an appointed position. She could have fired him for parting his hair wrong.
I really don't get the enthusiasm over Palin, she is only going to be a trophy VP, as others have pointed out.
ReplyDeleteShe raises the possibility that real-live actual decent people can be politicians - and even president. To behonest if I were an incumbent pol she'd scare the crap outta me.
First of all, the Left hates Sarah Palin because her nomination lessens the impact of Obama's nom. They rejected a woman in order to nominate a black man; I wouldn't say the Republicans trumped that "breakthrough," but they matched it pretty well.
Anyone stop to think how much better Palin is at drawing in non-traditional supporters than Obama? So Obama draws in the 10% of blacks who don't already vote Democratic - maybe 1% of the popular vote.
Palin? She draws in millions of white women who vote for Democrats, plus shores up the blue collar vote.
It's rather hilarious that the Palin nomination is embraced by the Ten Commandments crowd. How do these people take themselves seriously?
People who actually go to church actually know lots of people who don't always live up to the desired moral standard - they just don't compound the mistake. Everyone knows that teenagers get really, really randy.
I regularly check out the liberal press/blogs, and the hatred directed at Palin is almost unbelievable.
Their hatred towards anyone on the right is unbelievable. The New York Times already has over 1300 comments on the Bristol Palin pregnancy story and they're almost all viciously negative - and this isn't even DailyKOS or Demo Underground.
They've apparently decided that Swiftboating is the way to win elections.
No, because "swiftboating" means guys who actually served with a candidate all coming out and pretty much acknowledging that the candidate's a jackass.
Don't forgot for the child, who will grow up treating his mom like his sister.
What's he gunna do with a "sister" 18 years older that he wouldn't do with his mom? I have a sister so much older than me that I called her "ma'am."
Hmmm, and somewhat related to all the sexual rumors, we now have this: Researcher's find monogamy gene in men.
ReplyDeleteHow long before we find variance between races?
If this were my kid she wouldd have had an abortion by already. This is insane. Everyone would do the same unless they're idiots.
ReplyDeleteIt's not the most responsible thing to do but why is it "insane?" Large, close-knit family for financial and social support, dad's going to stick around, both parents are of good stock, and, le piece de resistance, the odds of your genetic line continuing just got a real shot in the arm.

ReplyDeleteYeah Marty, that's apparent from your continued responses to them.
martin, it is interesting how many blacks believe conspiracy theories beyond mainstream one like Institutional Racism. I think it is the 'empathizing mind' equivelent of autism.
ReplyDeleteStrong systemetizers don't naturally ascribe motivations to physical or social phenomena. A granted self-selected sample of vox day and pharyngula readers took an online aspergers screen: atheists were more aspergery tha religious people or agnostics. Not proof, but a a tantalizing result.
Likewise people with strongly female (in the Baron-Cohen sense) anthropomorphize physical and social phenomena, leading to religion and conspiracy theory, in addition to complicated interpersonal relationships.
Blacks are more likely to be theists, IIRC fewer have Aspergers, and are under-represented in technical fields even accounting for IQ differences.
