But almost nobody seems to have ever been there!
Well I was, and in the mid-1950s. Why? Because my uncle (brother of the glamorous aunt of Merrick Parkway fame) was in charge of publicity at that race course somebody mentioned in an earlier comment. He was maybe thirty, and owned a few of the horses himself.
I stayed there every summer for a few weeks. What did I do? I went to the beach: the sand was fine and hot under the feet, but best of all it was surrounded by brush into which I would daily plunge, to emerge minutes later with the days catch of insects: butterflies, caterpillars, ants both red and black (they fought to the death when pressed together by my eager young fingers) and, one glorious day, a real live tarantula.

And the point? Nobody worried about me or where I was. I was five, six, seven years old.

Why did we let that world get away from us?

And: seriously, how do we get it back?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9430835.post-50704118380043361212013-01-27T14:17:58.294-08:002013-01-27T14:17:58.294-08:00Even men who don't get into shoving matches ha...Even men who don't get into shoving matches have to understand bluffing.
