"The Bush".

We used to go to an ice cream place next to a movie theatre called The Gayety. They made their own ice cream-I've never tasted better anywhere. The owner was a Greek with, it was rumored, mob connections and the place was allegedly financed by Sam Giancana himself because he liked the ice cream.

When the area was infested so badly by las cucharachas they had to move they moved into a strip mall in, I think, Midlothian or Tinley Park. They quit making their own ice cream shortly thereafter and became a generic imitation Baskin Robbins. Today, young white ethnic South Chicagoans-what few there still are, a very few-regard one's saying they were at the old Gayety's like retro-70s groupies look at people that actually met Jim Morrison or Janis Joplin.

All the oldsters in South Chicago say places like Gayety's and Duke's Pizza were never money makers-the mob fronted them because they liked the food. No one says that of the Purple Steer-the food was good, but not mob good.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9430835.post-66390560307585461682007-04-26T11:13:00.000-07:002007-04-26T11:13:00.000-07:00It should be said in Chicago politics' defense tha...It should be said in Chicago politics' defense that their famous predilection for granting the dead a right to vote is precisely what many conservatives have called the benefit of tradition.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
