When we look back on 2007, what will we get nostalgic over? For what will 2007 go down in the history books?
My bet is that thirty years from now, we'll be telling the young people, "Yeah, you punks think you've got out-of-control attentionaholic moron starlets these days? Well, they're nothing, nothing I tell you, compared to what Lindsey Lohan, Paris Hilton, and Britney Spears were doing back in '07. Those three were like Stalin, Roosevelt, and Churchill at
My published articles are archived at iSteve.com -- Steve Sailer
I will be nostalgic over moving to a new city and becoming a filmmaker. Also some parties and friends.
ReplyDeleteI don't watch TV or listen to the radio. My quality of life jumped exponentially when I "tuned out" for good.
There have always been such, ahem, individuals: it's just that in earlier times they were ignored, as they should be.
ReplyDeleteFifty years ago, the big three of sluthood were women that, from what I can deduce, are held today as paregons of talent: Novak, Monroe, and Taylor.
MM is long dead, Liz in a wheelchair and Kim Novak quietly lives with her veterinarian husband somewhere out of the media. Novak was particularly held in contempt, as I remember, by the adults I grew up with as a "n****r lover" for her relationship with Sammy Davis Jr. Taylor was considered a homewrecker and Monroe a simple, well, slut.
Times change.
The Michael Vick story is going to be big. Very hard for the NFL to fire him, embar-assing to keep him.
ReplyDeleteI think the Establishment is underplaying this story at present precisely because it's so radioactive.
What's Obama's position gonna be?
Dog fighting as a part of an alternative culture which ought to be "respected"? Hmm, let's see white lieberals say that with a straight face.

ReplyDeleteBimbo Wonderland
(To the tune “Winter Wonderland”)
Bimbos sing, are you listening,
See the lip gloss is glistening.
Their talents are slight,
They’re out clubbing every night,
Living in a bimbo wonderland.
Britney Spears is in Heaven
Now she’s got rid of Kevin;
Her bottom is bare,
But she doesn’t care
Living in a bimbo wonderland.
Here’s Nicole, and here’s Paris,
Gals you just can’t embarrass;
This Simple Life pair
Seem to be everywhere—
Living in a bimbo wonderland.
Partying too much got Lindsay Lohan
Reprimanded by a studio boss.
He said: Are you working?
She said: No, man.
I’m drying out—I hope
You won’t be cross.
Later on, they’ll conspire,
Yet more fans to acquire.
No brains have these sluts,
Only hair, boobs, and butts—
Living in a bimbo wonderland.
I think we're going to be nostalgic about this period for a lot of reasons that have nothing to do with these three. The world is going to be a very different place in 30 or 50 years and I'm not at all confident the changes will be for the better. We may look back at this as a golden age when we could afford to worry about such frivolities as the aforementioned bimbos.

the year that UFC became mainstream.
ReplyDeletethe year that gangster rap went into decline.
the golden age of comic book movies.
perhaps most remembered as the year the illegal alien issue went mainstream. people in northern states will remember the first time border jumpers began invading their town, which seemed to happen en masse in 06 and 07.
and of course, the news story of the year, the virginia tech massacre.
ReplyDelete"Daaayum, I remember back in 07 when that asian dude blew all those people away, I was like OH SNAP!"
Ok - the song "Bimbo Wonderland" is too, too funny. I've been known to perform a few variations of popular tunes myself but generally get in a heap of trouble for it.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, in a sort of self-referential way, iSteve is drawing attention to iSteve by writing about the Bimbo Starlets. Don't ride on the strings of their teddies!

This topic came up in the ugly-people thread, but I'll throw it in here, as well:
Kim Novak: 0 children
Marilyn Monroe: 0 children
Elizabeth Taylor: 3 children, 5 grandchildren
Just to tread water demographically, those three ladies should have produced 6 children and 12 grandchildren, but instead produced only 3 children and 5 grandchildren.
My guess would be that, in 50 years, we might very well be looking at something like:
Paris Hilton: 0 children
Lindsay Lohan: 0 children
Britney Spears: ? 3 children, 5 grandchildren ?
Anyway, at the risk of sounding like a Papist, there's something to be said for the point of view which holds that the divorce of sexuality [which is to say, sexiness] from procreation [not the procreative act itself, but the actual birthing of live babies] is not a good prescription for a healthy demographic future.
The funny thing is that each "generation" of high schoolers has their own heros. These people hang on to their nostalgia and become a market for the washed up performers.
ReplyDeleteI am sure Paris will be doing Vegas or Branson. She will have the face lifts / foobs going just like the fans in her club that have always aspired to be like the bad girls.
what ever happened to bobby sherman?
uwSaw where somebody challenged Paris about politics;she said she votes. He asked her the last time she voted;she said "last year". And in what election? "Presidential"! :D The best of the bimboes is Lindsey Lohan, she is cheerfully dumb and beautiful.Never underestimate the power of youth, beauty and ditziness. She could be a real star--tho I dont know why every single big time celebrity makes movies that NO ONE goes to see. (Tho I did see the much loathed 'Babel') It must be some kind of arstocratic thing:the lower 'celebrities' do the actual money making stuff, while the ubers need only just...exist.
ReplyDeleteI have a theory the excessive coverage of Lohan, Hilton, and Spears is a contrivance of the studios to keep the transgressions of A-listers out of the media.
ReplyDeleteUnless one holds the absurd belief that no major actors or pop stars have been involved in any scandals since the ascendancy of this trio, it's working.
I realize this is not a market blog, but the BearSterns hedge funds defaults are huge news in 2007. SubPrime wipeout just might shake the world.
ReplyDeleteYesterday CNBC jocks: "uh-oh". Who remembers the S&L crisis.
The year 2007 might be the year the greatest real estate bubble in the history of the world burst, and the year that an extended period of financial hardship began.
Fed and Wall Street are trying to delay it. But here it comes. Bernanke is scared. Read the transcript. Fed has no idea of the extent of the fraud. He can only manage expectations "...yes, we've discovered a black hole in the economy...no, we do not yet know the true size of the hole."
This is possibly the story of the Year. Hopefully not the decade.
"Whatever happened to Bobby Sherman?"
ReplyDeleteThat's a strange but upbeat story -- the teenybopper singer of 1969 never expected his pop career to last to so he saved all his money, retired young, and then went into the career he'd always loved: he became a paramedic, eventually becoming head first aid trainer for the LAPD. He donated his salary from the money he saved.
LOLOL! That's classic Sailer.
ReplyDeleteLove the poem, but I agree that we may in fact miss these times someday in the future when things may truly erode, and the fun times of resenting celebs will be replaced with much more worrisome occurances...

ReplyDeleteLast year, Hispanics made up a mere 7% of voters at the polls. What are the projections for 2036? Anyone know? Because I'm guessing that 7% will be one thing I'll be nostalgic for.
Because let's face it: after all the decades of multiculti brainwashing, we are only just now headed off into that magical land where it will truly, seriously affect our politics and our daily lives. No multiracial society in history has ever been a genuine, functioning democracy, and I'm guessing that one piece of trivia won't change. We're headed off into the future we've already written for ourselves - and we were all focused on Parris Hilton (or, more likely, OJ Simpson) when we were creating it.
And a rational immigration policy (i.e., about one-tenth of the amount we have now)? Fuggedaboudit.
Oh, and THE John Derbyshire just posted here. How cool is that?

Had the parents of Hilton and Lohan desisted from birthing we'd be worse off how?
Bobby Sherman taught a class I attended on rescue operations about fifteen years ago. I was the only one who knew he'd been a teen star. I didn't say a word until the end.
ReplyDeleteI dunno about 2007...but in 2008 at the olympics everyone will suddenly realize that this is the Chinese century. Even if immigration could be stopped, the damage has been done -- 45% of children in the us are from groups that do not do well on the sat-m. The west had 500 years of dominance, but what is going to happen is that the US will decline slowly while western europe will be fighting off Muslims. Eastern Europe and Russia may become the new centers of the west, but only if they can stave off the assault from soros and co.
ReplyDeleteThe Chinese will have to figure out how to make toothpaste that doesn't kill people long before they get to call this their century. Interesting times are ahead for China: the inevitable crash of their stock market, followed by the inevitable economic correction. Perhaps as soon as '08, in the post-Olympics hangover.

ReplyDeleteChina's biggest challenge, bar none, will be dealing with the emerging demographic disaster of 1-Child.
1-Child was instituted in 1979, and Ambrose Evans Prichard recently asserted that China's working age population will peak in 2015, after which point it will collapse.
By the way, if anyone's interested in questions of IQ & demographics, then you might be pleasantly horrified to learn that IQ & fertility rates are almost perfectly INVERSELY correlated:
IQ and the Wealth of Nations
List of countries and territories by fertility rate
In fact, Hong Kong, which is driving the great Chinese economic transformation, has both world's highest known median IQ, at 107, and the world's lowest known Total Fertility Rate [live births per woman per fertile lifetime], at a mere 0.98 [note that most experts believe that you need a TFR of at least 2.10 just to tread water].
So all the Masters of the Universe, who ought to be the leaders of the PRC in the mid-21st century, simply aren't being born today.
No one knows how the high-IQ countries of the Far East & Europe will deal with their impending demographic collapse, but, as things stand now, I don't know of any possible way to paint a rosy scenario.
Me: My guess would be that, in 50 years, we might very well be looking at something like... Britney Spears: ? 3 children, 5 grandchildren ?

MOOOOO HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!!!

ReplyDeleteOne way in which China's reversed its demographic decline is by exporting lots and lots of its people abroad - to Canada, the US, Russia, and Australia, in places not subject to the one-child policy. Overseas Chinese exhibit strong ethnocentric tendencies - they'll remain loyal to those of their race back in the homeland.
China also has another, even more ominous way of countering its need for population control: look North, to Russia; look South, to Australia; look East, to Canada.
I'm not talking about simple emigration - I'm talking about good old-fashioned conquest.
