"the unique taste of millions": how very American.
ReplyDeleteI got the first for my birthday yesterday. Released on the same day, in the midst of our celebration of America Junior's birthday!
ReplyDeleteIt's called satire, dearieme.
ReplyDeleteRe: dearieme's comment. Yes, there is a lot of conformity in America, and a lot of conformity masquerading as dissent, but not nearly as much as there is in the groupthink leftist bastion that is Western Europe today.
ReplyDeleteIncidentally, I happened to read a bit of Bill Bryson's book "Made in America" today, wherein he chronicles the constant sneering criticism of America made by Brits starting in the early 19th century. I see some British traditions are still alive and well (perhaps not many - due to impinging multiculturalism - but some!).
stuffwhitepeoplelike and War Nerd have to be two of the best sites ever. Along with isteve.
ReplyDeleteSteve, I just have to add this in your honor -
quantify?
What? No book review on the amazon site for the war nerd?
ReplyDeleteSteve you must give a review.
I think the exile.ru site is on the verge of going out of business.
ReplyDelete$11.20? $10.85?
ReplyDeleteSteve, when you get your dream and publish that Solzhenitsyn book, I think you should think higher than these.
$10-12 for new books: Last year's discretionary spending is now going to pay gas and food bills. So there is less pricing power in the book business today.
ReplyDeleteStarbucks just announced a 600 store closing along with a 200 store expansion plan. Look for the 200 new outlets to be delayed or never happen. There is less pricing power in the coffee business today also.
Even though the media can't stop talking about inflation, the price of books and everything else you don't need to survive will be falling from here until the real estate market finds a bottom. That could be years from now.
Books especially are subject to online piracy. Internet piracy for books and music among younger people has been well over 50% rate for years. In the oncoming deep recession that rate will spike out of 'necessity'. Talk about a lack of pricing power.
Hopefully we won't undergo complete Chinafication during an extended downturn: We come out on the other side with zero respect for the concept of intellectual copyright and the value of protecting authorship of ideas.
I don't know why blogger prevented the link I posted but it was to stuff white people like, winner #5 - Statistics.
