Evil Steve's How-To Guide to the Softest AP Tests

Following up last night's VDARE.com article on Advanced Placement testing, I've been mulling some more over the problem off how to find the easiest Advanced Placement tests for high school students to pass in order to get free college credit. All AP Tests are fairly hard, but which ones take the minimum combination of IQ, math skills, and midnight oil to squeeze by with a passing score of at least 3 out of 5?

So, I've come up with a methodology that I suspect you wouldn't find anywhere else: Relative to Asians, which AP tests do blacks do best on in terms of passed tests per capita? In other words, if all you want to do is to find some AP Test where you can skate through with a passing score like a cool black kid rather than grind it out like an Asian nerd, then you want to look at tests where blacks do best relative to Asians.

(Obviously, this is a relativistic comparison, not an absolute one. Overall, in absolute per capita terms, Asians pass 20 times as many AP tests as blacks do, so Asians do much better on each of the three dozen AP tests than blacks do. I won't bore you with a detailed explanation of my relativism-squared methodology: in brief, I'm comparing black passing rates per test relative to the overall black passing rate relative to the same comparison for Asians.)

The rank order turned out to fit my a priori stereotypes to a T. Relative to Asians, blacks did worst on the monster science and math tests like the upper level Computer Science AB test, Physics C: Electricity & Magnetism, and upper level Calculus BC. Blacks did best on the softer-sounding social science, humanities, hands-on art, and language tests.

In this table, the first row is the aggregate across all AP tests per 1,000 students. In 2008, blacks passed a little under 0.06 AP tests per kid, while Asians pass about 1.15 tests each. In other words, on average, blacks pass about 1/20th as many AP tests per capita as Asians, so we'll set that level of relative performance to 100. For, say, Calculus BC, 1.2 out of every 1,000 blacks of the relevant age passed versus 73.1 out of every 1000 Asians, or 1/62nd as many, which is only 32% as good as the overall 1/20th rate. In contrast, at the bottom of the list on French Language, blacks did 1/8th as well per capita as Asians did, which is 251% of their typical performance relative to Asians.

So, Psychology, Human Geography, the two Englishes, and World History look pretty doable, with Environmental Science the easiest of the science tests. In contrast, on this scale, European History is the hardest of the purely verbal tests.

One bias to keep in mind in this scale is that I would bet that females take a large majority of the AP tests among blacks, but not among Asians. This might partially account for the relatively strong black performance in French. (Also, there may a certain number of black immigrant families that speak French at home, from Haiti and West Africa.)

Also, remember the distinction between one year and multi-year subjects. The French Literature AP Exam is, apparently, a piece of cake ... assuming you've already spent years learning French and reading the classics of French Literature. On the other hand, the Psychology exam is intended to cover what you'd learn from scratch in a one-semester college Psychology 101 course.

In the comments, Lucius Vorenus points out that this table doesn't constitute hatefacts or hatestats, but an until-now never before defined category of knowledge: hatecalcs.

Also, the term "Stevil" could be useful for the act of looking up diversity data for objective, non-Who? Whom? purposes.

This is not a hatefact - it's a hatecalc, or a hateequat or a hatedef.

  2. Conversely, if a smart kid wants to prove his mental superiority, he/she should try to pass the top five exams on your list in his junior year, say. But try passing exams on the bottom of the list say in junior high to get used to the whole standardized test thing.

It's a very useful list which is probably an accurate rank order of AP tests by g-loading.

  4. Steve,

I've wondered before when you were going to start applying your insights to investing, and this "hatecalc" post gives me an idea. There's an old theory on Wall Street called the Odd Lot Theory: the idea behind it is that small investors are most likely to buy odd lots (i.e., fewer than 100 shares of a stock), and that the small investor is almost always wrong. So you do the opposite of what the odd lot buyers do. You can create a new theory, the Black Lot Theory. You just to find need a list of investment moves by black retail investors and do the opposite.

Another variation: you could look up the boards of directors of various public companies -- easy to find on company websites, and they usually include handy photos of the directors -- and short the companies with the highest percentage of NAM directors.

Then you can start a fund using this "proprietary" strategy, solicit investors on your blog (with the appropriate legal sales prevention), and charge one or two percent of assets as a management fee. You can even hire some out-of-work recent UCLA finance grad to run it for you. And you can start making Barry Ritholtz money.

Give it a shot -- you'll probably make more money with this than with panhandling.

Also: if you're right, and Barry's wrong, why not get paid for being right?

  5. Here's another thing to consider: not all AP tests are created equal in the eyes of colleges.

Not all AP exam "passes" will get you credit for anything in your particular college. For example, when I took the AP exams almost twenty years ago, my university wouldn't accept CompSci A [I did CompSci AB].

So yeah, that Environmental Science AP exam may be looking pretty sweet, but it may get you bupkis.

  6. Damn Steve, you're really pushing the limits with this one. This is about as un-PC as it gets.

I have to agree with you about French, though. How many blacks really choose to study this "white oppressor" language? I have to imagine that most of the blacks who take this test have some connection to a French speaker.

I'm actually impressed at the number of tests where blacks outperform asians. I guess a race-denier would turn the list upside-down and call it "least racially-biased tests". Of course, it would be very hard to explain how cultural tests like French or History could be less racially-biased than Math or Computer Science.

    Too much, Steve.

Not only are you really stressing logic (ignoring issues like relative language skills, differing self-selection effects, etc.), you're missing some basic points about the AP. It's not just about "CLEPing out" of stuff. It's about getting motion on key college curricula. And even about the learning, you get in the course (beleive me, an AP chem class is hands down better than a normal chem class). So getting some credits in psych or whatever seems like a waste.

Dude, as Steve pointed out millions of Blacks in Haiti and West Africa speak French as their native language. French, and Portuguese, are both black cultural languages - there is a wealth of black music, books and films in both languages. Spanish - not so much. And for African-Americans Paris still has a reputation as a black home in Europe, a place where famous negro jazz musicians and writers used to take refuge from American racism.

The trouble with this approach is that more now than ever, the success of a major company depends on government largesse. I would guess that a black-owned business is more likely to get juicy contracts; bailouts; etc.

Your methodology makes sense after I give it some thought, but I bet some readers will mistake it for Lucius's simpler one. I certainly did, as did the Anonymous above who infers that blacks "outperform" Asians in subjects with numbers above 100. Pay at attention to the first two columns, folks! That will save you from bending over backwards to explain anomalous results.

  14. Computer Science AB (the harder of the two Computer Science Advanced Placement tests) was passed by 36 black students in 2008. Nationally, 3,526 students passed (2012 whites, 1150 Asians, 127 Hispanics, and a bunch of Not Stateds and Others).

Since the great majority of AP test takers only take a particular exam once, the relevant comparison is to the total cohort of youths born in the same year, which is roughly 4.3 million. So, the passing rate for the hardest CS test was well under 0.1% out of all youths (many of whom, of course, have already dropped out of school.

  17. So you start with:

Norming Coefficient Numerator = [SUM {over all tests and all asians} Tests Passed] ÷
    [SUM {over all asians} 1]

Norming Coefficient Denominator = [SUM {over all tests and all blacks} Tests Passed] ÷
    [SUM {over all blacks} 1]

Norming Coefficient = [Norming Coefficient Numerator] ÷ [Norming Coefficient Denominator]

    Then you add:

Raw Hatecalc Numerator = [SUM {over particular test and all blacks} Tests Passed] ÷
    [SUM {over all blacks} 1]

Raw Hatecalc Denominator = [SUM {over particular test and all asians} Tests Passed] ÷
    [SUM {over all asians} 1]

Raw Hatecalc = Raw Hatecalc Numerator ÷ Raw Hatecalc Denominator

    And finally you get:

    HATECALC = [Raw Hatecalc] X [Norming Coefficient] X 100.

So if you cancel out the SUMs over "1", then I guess you would have:

HATECALC = 100 X [SUM {over particular test and all blacks} Tests Passed] X [SUM {over all tests and all asians} Tests Passed] ÷ [SUM {over particular test and all asians} Tests Passed] ÷ [SUM {over all tests and all blacks} Tests Passed]

    Or whatever.

    Jesus Christ that is pathetic.

I bet the equivalent number in Mainland China is more like 35,260 [or - who knows? - maybe even 352,600].

We might as well just go ahead and run up the white flag while they'll still let us.

  19. Very interesting analysis, but practically the CLEP exams are much easier than the AP exams. A better college strategy is to CLEP during the freshman year to clear out the humanities and social science deadwood courses while pursuing a major like engineering or accounting with real labor market value. The university subsidizes the less-valued majors by forcing engineering students and the like to take so many of their classes as electives. CLEP provides a means to sidestep that subsidy and timesuck for intelligent students, who go from calculus class where truth is objective to suffering the indignity of having to write a paper pleasing to some Marxist history professor.

  20. pretty much the correct order of difficulty. computer science, physics, calculus at the top.

what's interesting is that introductory computer science does not use any math beyond arithmetic, yet i'd say, and the AP tests appear to confirm, that it's easily more difficult than introductory calculus. i took 3 computer science classes in college, so i feel like i understand why almost no high school kids can even pass the AP test. real computer science at the beginner level, with recursion and data structures, is something almost nobody can just pick up, and which requires a couple months of instruction under an expert (college professor, for instance). almost no high schools offer that. where i went to college, computer science 101 had the highest failure rate in the entire school.

statistics has tricky math when you get into probability.

i think spanish and french are easier to learn than german, which is kind of strange, because english is descended from german. that seems to be the exact order of pass rates too. spanish, then french, then german. i was becoming fluent in german around 1997, but gave up, because i hated learning 3 genders for the articles for nouns. that occupied huge amounts of mental space for a basically useless system. english uses a single article for almost every noun, a far, far better system. the trade-off was that in german almost everything was spelled correctly, whereas in english unusual spellings are common and irregular verbs are more frequent.

  21. Steve, it's easier to simply major in psychology as I did. You get 120credits of As and Bs equivalent to 30 credits of B and B- physics work.

OTOH, if as a parent you care more about quality than saving ten bucks, then psych and el cheapo APs aren't for your kid.

The other trick, besides overcrediting (which is free or inexpensive) is to take the intro/basic-required courses at local colleges for 1/5 the cost of private unis, as my Ivy acquaintences made a habit of (the poor ones who cared, that is.)

Add gender to the calculation, that's why Canadian hi-tech companies like Nortel failed - stunned whore quotas. And Cognos. And Corel. And Entrust. And Hummingbird. And any other you can name. Fail, as the kids today say. HP's stock jumped when she was dumped as CEO, Magma's tanked when Belinda Stronach's dad appointed her head honcho; the market doesn't seem to dig the ladies.

The Liberal Party of Canada recently introduced a bill whereby x% (I think 40, that's what they do in Norway) of publicly traded companies' directors must be female. It was introduced in the Senate by a single member, don't think one of those ever passed, still...

You'd think that with Canada's low bidness tax rates, public health insurance, and Canada's highly subsidized education system churning out grads American companies would be fleeing here from Obama's America - not. They know better, it's the stunned whore quotas, among other things.

  24. Fred's idea is brilliant. Reminds me of my idea of shorting South Africa. Let's expand on it.

Steve, why not make a scatterplot of earnings growth over a five year time period vs. some kind of quantitative measure of diversity? Percentage NAM in the workforce would probably do it.

We already know the results at the top end. Hi tech is not a NAM redoubt. But what about the middle and bottom? This could be as blockbuster as Lynn and Jensen/Murray. Lynn did IQ and the Wealth of Nations. Murray did IQ and the Wealth of Individuals.

You can do IQ and the Wealth of Firms. The microeconomic variant.

You'd have to adjust by hierarchy in the workforce, or salary level, so that a Wal-Mart doesn't get dinged for having lots of NAMs earning $8 per hour. That's why my first idea was to look at board of directors composition. To put a Wal-Mart and a Google on a level playing field, you could do that or you could compare the percentage of NAMs at the highest executive level below the C-level officers.

An undergraduate degree for the middle classes is to learn a trade like programming, law or mending pots. Accordingly, learning something useful, quickly and a low cost makes sense.

However, for the elites, undergrad is not about education so much as networking and proving your worthy to have a shot at the next gen of elitism.

An elite going to HYP would be a fool to rush through their undergrad experience to save $30-50k. They should spend all four years bonding over drink and leisure with future masters of the universe to get the most out of their Wonka golden ticket experience. $30-50k is nothing - it's what their parents' paid every year of prep school just to get their kids into HYP in the first place.

By extension of your optimization strategy, a white male could possibly graduate with top grades if they continued to take easy coursework in college and parrot their professors' neo-Marxist line but to what end? What job would they graduate to?

There are precious few jobs for white men without any real skills in the productive economy much less in the growing government-sponsored race spoils racket.

  39. "Shorting South Africa sounds interesting.

You have to apply a little nuanced thinking here. South Africa's NAMs (non-Asian majorities, I guess, in this case) may be a big headwind, but its surfeit of precious and industrial commodities could be a tailwind in the event of high inflation in the future, or the resumption of high growth in emerging countries. So, rather, than short all South African stocks, or short the South African rand, you'd want to short the companies that wouldn't benefit from a resumption of the commodity boom in South Africa.

Alternatively, you could use paired trades to further isolate your NAM-oriented short exposure. For example, instead of simply shorting a South African airline, which might benefit from economic growth in South Africa even if it is more poorly run than other airlines, you could pair a short position in a South African airline with a long position in a non-South African airline that does a lot of business in South Africa.

They were using NAMs as virtual slave labor, with the promise of big pay in the future...competence was of no use, though, at any point. I hatefully agree, to the everlasting ruin of Western civilization and diversity, that you can absolutely call an office's competence level on cursory NAM percentages. EVIL! No doubt. Anyway, any more ideas on how to get rich based on being right? Sailer posted an "any ideas on how to save the world," post, forget that! Post an "any idea on how to get rich?" post. It is because this sort of talk that many respectable people will not read or think about genetic differences between races and genders. Please, can we not be kind and civil as we discuss these matters? If you are hateful and mean spirited then you discredit the whole idea of biodiversity and add fuel to the affirmative action people.

By the way, I am a Canadian female who has worked as a computer programmer and taught computer programming (though I now teach math, which is what my degrees are in), and my older sister has worked many years as a computer programmer (though her degree is in physics). We are VERY GOOD programmers, and have sometimes worked with and taught men who are NOT very good.

Since I am Canadian I have never written AP exams--they don't have them in Canada that I am aware of. However many years ago I wrote the British Columbia Math 12 scholarship exam and scored in the 90's -- I don't recall the exact score.

My sister graduated with her B.Sc. in Physics near the top of class and attended graduate school in Geophysics at University of British Columbia with a National Research Council Scholarship (this was in the early 1970's). She never completed her thesis for the degree thanks in part to professors who has the same sort of attitude as Anonymous. She always figured she would have done alright if she had stayed in pure sciences--geophysics was more like engineering--it had "issues" with women back then.

The thing is, there ARE some women and some black people who are very smart in many things including the hard sciences. Anonymous doesn't seem to want to believe this or show respect for those people. It was the attitude of people like Anonymous that got us into stupid things such as AA in the first place.

    You must be Canadian:
I really want to be a conservative, but, gosh, some anonymous guy on the internet made a politically incorrect comment, so now I'm a feminist. It's his fault, not mine, that I now support the egregious Sotomayor for the Supreme Court.

People really want to be realistic about gender issues, but random anonymous internet comments that are critical of women make it difficult to be so. Feminism is, in fact, a reactionary movement incited by random anonymous internet commenters in 2009. AA is the fault of anonymous internet commenters who are critical of women.

Save it, spalpeen, I get this all the time. Man the Christ up.

Oh, I read the rest of your comment. You are Canadian, as predicted and give some unverifiable internet story about how you're the next James Gosling.

Sweetie, I'm a Canadian programmer too, I work with stunned whores like you and that's why I'm the way I am. Maybe we even worked together.

I worked at two of the companies I listed and was recruited by a third - the stunned whore female programmers and project managers there were awful - not so much in talent, but in everything else, attitude and hostility chief among them. Completely ruined the workplace, and the fact every one of those companies failed backs me up.

Another by the way: my mother graduated from Law School in 1949. No AA back in those days.

Here's your argument: once upon a time one (1) woman graduated from law school in 1949, therefore women aren't stunned whores.

The plural of anecdote is not data, hun, it's not about you. Pointing to 1 or 2 or 3 examples of successful programmers and lawyers only shows your inability to understand probabilities and generalizations, it doesn't at all prove anything. Your comments, not overly burdened with intelligence and not terribly lacking in hostility, prove *my* point.

"By the way, I am a Canadian female who has worked as a computer programmer and taught computer programming (though I now teach math, which is what my degrees are in)"

You forgot to mention you're a blue eyed black woman who is married to a Chinese man and has blonde babies; c'mon, if you're going to be a stereotype buster, go whole hog. Lots of women "used to program". Well it's like golf, if you used to golf, you never really did.

What did I tell you guys a few posts back?

"Nothing f*cks up a convo on race and gender like a stunned whore piping up "I know a black guy? Who graduated from Yale? Ya, so you can't make generalizations"

I can't believe how fortunate I am that a stunned whore showed up to prove my point so perfectly.

Steve: now do you understand why I'm on the gender thing? I work with stunned whores like this up here in Canada; real treat, isn't she?

  45. "My sister graduated with her B.Sc. in Physics near the top of class and attended graduate school in Geophysics at University of British Columbia with a National Research Council Scholarship"

Not only did I work at the NRC, my dad did too. They just laid off their programming division, CISTI. Know why? Took them over a year to produce a web page and even then it still wasn't done, they had to call in new consultants because the ones they had couldn't stand working there.

Know why? It was managed by a lesbian and staffed with homosexualists and feminists, all of whom hated each other. They laid off the whole department. Militant unionism was a big problem too, and diversity? Not only do they want gender and race diversity but - I swear this is true - there are posters there promoting the idea of diversity of abilities, that a team with some smart people, some middling people, and some dumb people will beat a team of all smart people. It's satanic.

Think about that: the National Research Council of Canada can't even produce a webpage that a basement full of script kiddies could've done in a month.

How do I know all of this? You see this:

    www.nrc.ca

Yeah, I programmed that, or at least 80% of the Java code. Hibernate, Spring, Oracle 10g db, Struts 2.0, on an Oracle Application server. I quit, or rather refused a second contract extension, as did other consultants, because it was a fucking clown show that didn't pay enough for the headaches, especially the stunned whores.

Stunned whores. Ruining Canada's premier research facility since 1986. I wasn't kidding when I said I was surrounded by stunned whores, lads. Now do you understand?

And I don't have math degrees, I took Political Science for f*ck's sake, learned programming on my own and have been doing it since 1998 purely on talent - in an environment screamingly hostile to anglo white het males.

Yeah, I'm a little "spirited" about the matter, you would be too. I'll tell you this, to get back on topic: if we had AP tests and merit principle up here in Canada things would be very different.

Here's the story on the stunned whore induced NRC layoffs:

    Absolutely true.

The next question is, of course, to actually count how many. How many are "very smart," "smart," "average," "dumb," and "very dumb."

And then to make a histogram.

Melykin, what would that histogram look like? And how would the histogram for one group compare with the histograms of other groups?

Please, can we not be kind and civil as we discuss these matters? If you are hateful and mean spirited then you discredit the whole idea of biodiversity and add fuel to the affirmative action people.

    Those are my thoughts exactly!

Melykin: I am a Canadian female... my older sister... attended graduate school... in the early 1970's...

Just out of curiosity - how many biological children do you have, and how many biological children does your sister have?

    And are there any grandchildren?

    Thanks.

  51. Twenty bucks. I pledge twenty bucks to release my response to that bilious harridan in its entirety.

I'll have to mail a money order since I don't want Big Sister to know I'm an HBDer, but I'll do it.

Twenty bucks. American. Coming from a skinflint freerider like me that's like eleventy bajillion. Can we appoint a third party hostage negotiator to settle this?

    ReplyDelete
  52. Twenty five bucks. $25, and I'll stop saying stunned whore and say bilious harridan instead if you release the hounds that are my comments.

Do it for humanity, Stevie Franchise. Do it for the future, the children, so they can live in a stunned whore free world.

  53. Yay! You release one comment, that's good for ten bucks. The first one was better though, so another fiddeen if you release it.

We can arrange a Bettencourt hostage release scenario so we all save face; as if the French busted her out of Columbia, that story is as believable as the stunned whore's.

  54. Yay! Both comments made it, I'll email you for contact info. I'm so grateful I'm gonna ixnay the "Sotomayor is a Marrano" bit, at least on your blog.

They're big on that kind of ...gayness, for lack of a better word, up here, blaming their Marxism on the actions of someone else.

I think it started with the Prime Minister Jean Chretien who was getting pushed out by Paul Martin during his second term; he claimed that he didn't want to run for a third term but the fact Martin was pushing him out the door "made him" run for a third term.

I'm sooooooo illegally immigrating to America, I can't bear this anymore. I won't steal any jobs, promise, I'll make my $ online.

I haven't basked in the warmth of a flame war like that in years. It felt great!

In the end, we (Western Society) have sold its birthright and is failing to reproduce to replace itself. Its completely doomed.

My only question is will it end in a bang (war) or a whimper (current path)?

Will the only remnants of Western Society to survive be the Mormons with their food storage, guns, and reproducing?

I have 4 biological children, and my sister has 2. I have one grand-daughter who is 2, and very cute :)
My sister has 2 grandchildren, both under 1 year.

My sister's daughter is becoming a surgeon (doing residency now) One of my sons is starting on a Ph.D. in the fall. All our children have finished college and are doing ok.

What does it matter? Decisions about admitting students to programs and hiring people should be made entirely on the basis of the merit of each individual.

Funny how that works, most of the time anyone to the right is pretty much held to a higher standard already even when commenting anonymously on the web.

Look in on majority rights compared to a liberal/left site like firedog lake. You would be surprised to see which one has more outlandish demands for killing, imprisonment, re-education and the like. Clue: its not the one that would be characterized as hate speech.

Gotcha, you racist sexist bigot. You dare to defend the Old Boy Network and The Glass Ceiling? Womyn and minorities were on the bottom under Old Individualist Amerikkka's harsh phallocratic standards!!

I'm all for merit-based everything, but we must realize that historical injustices have held womyn back and minorities down; we (those of us who are properly educated and Aware) must put a little "English" on the ball in the case of the darkies and our daughters.

In the 1950's, women and blacks didn't even have a chance, no matter how capable they were. That was the old boy network and the glass ceiling.

Apparently both are alive and well around here.

"Ana Caraiani is a senior at Princeton University, and she is already conducting professional-level mathematical research. In the summers of 2005 and 2006, Caraiani participated in the REU program at the University of Minnesota at Duluth. She worked independently on a project on semigroups of rational numbers, related to the 3x + 1 problem. Her work on this problem is highly praised. The resulting paper, “On Wild Semigroups,” introduces new ideas that exhibit significant ingenuity.

Caraiani’s coursework at Princeton has been remarkable. She has done very well in extremely difficult classes, and is noted for her independence and mathematical sophistication. One professor has said that her work “made you think that it was a professional mathematician who was answering the problems.” Another professor rates her among the top undergraduate mathematics majors in fifty years at Princeton.

Caraiani has won the William Lowell Putnam competition twice, scoring among the top five competitors in both her freshman and sophomore years, and is the only woman ever to have done so. The Princeton math department awarded her the Class of 1861 Prize her sophomore year and the Andrew H. Brown prize for outstanding juniors. She is expected to become a major mathematical figure and a world class research mathematician."
