As you'll recall, one of the most stylized, fable-like sections of the President's Dreams from My Father is the when Obama describes to his half sister Auma the serious girlfriend he had in New York (where he lived from 1981-1985), whom he dumped because she was white, and not only white but old money WASP. As several commenters have noted, the whole episode sounds like it was lifted from a white ethnic writer like Mario Puzo or Philip Roth.
David Remnick's bestseller The Bridge: The Life and Rise of Barack Obama doesn't mention the white New York girlfriend -- that's too interesting for Remnick to pursue. Remnick's audience is primarily white women who have a bit of a thing for the President, so a discussion of Obama's disquiet about interracial relationships would be a downer for Remnick's readers.
But Remnick does say about his first Chicago stay (1985-1988):
But Remnick does say about his first Chicago stay (1985-1988):
"Toward the end of his time as an organizer, Obama had a steady girlfriend, a white University of Chicago student who was studying anthropology."
This is interesting for a couple of reasons. First, she sounds much like his mom, who got accepted by the U. of Chicago at age 15 back when they took younger students (but she didn't go) and got a Ph.D. in anthropology.
Second, according to his book, he had previously realized in New York that it wouldn't work with a white girl, so why another white girlfriend? (This is assuming that they aren't the same person, whom Obama has melded together for whatever reason). One might think that a 656 page biography might ask those kind of questions, but it doesn't.
Barack's white girlfriend is a fiction based on William Ayers's memories of Diana Oughton.
ReplyDeleteVera Baker was widely rumored to be an Obama mistress during the 2004 senate campaign. The google hits on her make her look like a very light skinned black.
ReplyDelete"Barack's white girlfriend is a fiction based on William Ayers's memories of Diana Oughton."
ReplyDeleteOK, I just read the page you linked to and I'm not convinced.
So what if both writers described people's eyebrows in their books? How is that a coincidence? Same about the word fedora, the word stooped and the rest of it.
"Obama tells the reader that the neighbor’s “silence” impressed him. “Silence” impressed Ayers as well. There are at least ten references to the word in Fugitive Days. "
I mean, come on. Millions of people have been impressed by silence. In the passages quoted on that page the styles of the two writers are similarly humorless, boring and pretentiously literary, but lots of intellectuals, especially leftist ones, write like that nowadays.
“There was a woman in New York that I loved,” he tells Auma. “She was white. She had dark hair, and specks of green in her eyes. Her voice sounded like a wind chime.” Obama continues, “We saw each other for almost a year. On the weekends, mostly. Sometimes in her apartment, sometimes in mine. You know how you can fall into your own private world? Just two people, hidden and warm. Your own language. Your own customs. That’s how it was.”
Nobody since the beginning of the world has ever talked in that kind of literary style, and yet Obama presents it as direct speech. That's pretty funny.
Obama may well have gotten help with his book, and he may even have gotten it from Ayers, but those quotes on Mr. Cashil's page did nothing to prove that to me.
"Toward the end of his time as an organizer, Obama had a steady girlfriend, a white University of Chicago student who was studying anthropology."
ReplyDeleteObama wasn't married at the time, so why doesn't Remnick, at the very least, name her?
"How many serious white girlfriends has Obama had?"
ReplyDeleteBefore or after marrying Michelle Obama?
FWIW, Obama seems cold enough to dump Michelle after his term in the White House for a younger, prettier, and possibly whiter chick.
Other factors may play in to this, such as how it would effect his post-presidential revenue stream and his cache with the black community, especially if she were white (assuming he cares), etc. - but I can see Obama doing it, though I'll admit I'm surprised Bill Clinton hasn't done it already.
Or then maybe he'll take the Steven Seagal route, with Michelle's permission, while Michelle pursues her dream to be the next Oprah.
according to his book, he had previously realized in New York that it wouldn't work with a white girl, so why another white girlfriend?
ReplyDeleteGee, I dunno. Why does any guy any guy ever have sex with a woman he knows he'll never marry?
As for his book, he didn't want to say that he had a bunch of smart, pretty, and talented white girlfriends, with nary a black woman to be found. Then he did his duty, married a black women, closed his eyes and thought of the presidency.
Maybe being a political tool is why Michele Obama is down on Barry.
Off-topic:
ReplyDeleteNot from The Onion, and not from SWPL.com:
Two SWPL white girls move into the entryway of a roach-infested apartment in L.A.'s MacArthur Park to write about what illegal immigrant life is really like:
http://the-entryway.com/
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/comments_blog/2010/04/can-two-white-women-effectively-write-about-la-immigrant-life.html
So a serious biography must include every girlfriend someone has had? I think very few people care who Obama's girlfriend was when he was 23.
ReplyDeleteWhile the first Anonymous may be right, I'm not so sure. In a certain New England town in which my family has a house, it's considered common knowledge that the President dated someone who spent summers there at her family place. I don't know whether or not it's true, as I wasn't there at the time. But I'll certainly ask around this summer...
ReplyDeleteSomehow I doubt Obama has much of an idea of what a WASP even is, in the sense of being able to distinguish them from rich non-Jewish whites of any other background.
ReplyDeleteBill Ayers sure as hell does, though.
I haven't read Dreams--but I seriously doubt your account of what happened the White-Girl.
ReplyDeleteYou said she was "dumped" because she was White, is that really what happened?
Give us a more detailed account.
1. Was she really dumped? Maybe the drifted apart, maybe he was dumped.
2. Was her race the primary reason?
I'm suspicious of you, Mr. Sailer--because you see everything through the confined prisms of race (sometimes it's right, othertimes, wong)
Agree with the other comment that this 'Fling with the WASP' chapter of Barry's bio reeks of fictionalization. Sorry, not buying it. Why are these white chick girlfriends still anonymous? Does that really compute? That they would stay completely silent through the outrageous trajectory of superstardom of their former beau? As opposed to Clinton who tried and failed to suppress extra marital affairs? We are talking here about relationships during Barry's single dating life. There's no reason to suppress anything, especially relationships with black girls.
ReplyDeleteAnd what about the other black girls he dated? What about the other serious relationships with blacks before he got married?
isteve.blogspot.com/2009/10/where-are-obamas-old-girlfriends.html
Steve wrote about this and it turns out that there are none. Barry met Michelle when he was about 28 years old and she is only the black girl on the record.
Steve, I want to present a logical argument that solves this puzzle: The evidence points to Barry having relationships with men and not women before the age of 28. Barry's political handlers would go to any lengths [even death threats] to shut down former male lovers and prevent them from going public. Hence the complete void before Michelle. The political handlers would never go to such extremes to shut down various female lovers during Barry's single dating life. If they existed we would have heard from those ladies. They would be proud to announce it.
One argument against this logic is that Barry dated only white women before he met Michelle. That would have been an issue in the campaign and so it would have been suppressed by his political handlers. Except this is a guy with no real world reputation for dating white chicks. None. (Dating only white girls would have made people remember him at places like Columbia) And anyway when political handlers shut down real world stuff there is always a cloud of suspicion that lingers around the politician. There is always the stink of the truth surrounding the politician. But Obama never has had white girl obsession rumors lingering around him.
Occam's Razor points to male relationships before Michelle. What sealed it for me was watching the clip of Barry throw out the first pitch for MLB opening day during his first year as president. That was the gayest throw from a 'documented' straight guy ever caught on film.
I'm sorry, but this post is retarded.
ReplyDeleteSteve has got to be unique in the HBD community as a guy whose regular complaints about black men is that they don't f*ck enough white women.
ReplyDeleteMy personal preference would be for women to hold on to their virtue and remain more or less sexually innocent until they meet "the one" but even if Steve is a libertine (which I doubt he is) how strange is it that he's so incessently hurt by black men who stick with black women? What in God's name could possibly explain that far out perspective?
The fact that the nations first black (and even competant and intelligent even though he's adoreed by Blacks!) president is married to a dark black woman is VERY VERY good and I really don't get why Steve keeps looking this gift horse in the mouth. Just be happy and get on with it. It's good for your daughter, my friend.
To the anonymous who hasn't read Dreams and yet "seriously doubt" Steve's account:
ReplyDeleteSee page 210-211
Start with "Well there was a woman in New York that I loved. She was White...." on page 210.
Through "I pushed her away..." on page 211.
Now that I've done your homework from you, Anonymous, will you please get a handle for commenting?
Of course, I do recognize you as the guy who every now and then tries to rebut Steve's finding with "you see everything through a racial prism, Mr. Sailer" and nothing else. You will agree, however, that that's a mouthful.
PS By the way, after reading this, what kind of prism do you think your Barack sees the world through?
Did anyone from Columbia that remembers him being there ever turn up? Other than that professor?
ReplyDeleteLike all the missing girlfriends, something seems to be missing.
What about his Pakistan trip? Has any new info come up?
Too much weirdness. I feel like those guys analysing Chauncey Gardiner's clothing, trying to figure out where he came from...
Anybody else catch George Lopez' HBO show? I'd like to see what would happen if a guy of European descent insulted Mexicans that way.
ReplyDeleteFrom someone who hasn't read the book to someone who has:
ReplyDelete1. Was she really dumped? Maybe the drifted apart, maybe he was dumped.
Are you really so autistic? Maybe you and the outside world just drifted apart? Or maybe the outside world is autistic.
Boy with mommy issues seeks girl with daddy issues.
ReplyDeleteI find myself in the uncomfortable position of agreeing with mnuez. Obama should't be president... in a better world he'd be in Kenya, or Hawaii, would be its own country and thus Barry wouldn't be eligible to rule us. But as things stand, I am glad Obama is married to Michelle, rather than an Elin Nordegren equivalent.
ReplyDeletemnuez: "The fact that the nations first black (and even competant and intelligent even though he's adoreed by Blacks!) president is married to a dark black woman is VERY VERY good and I really don't get why Steve keeps looking this gift horse in the mouth."
ReplyDeleteWell, the President is HALF WHITE as well -- a fact which too many people (including the Prez) like to forget. Is it so strange that a half-white guy might be attracted to white women? (And, then, maybe that he decided instead to marry a black woman at least in part to further his political career...?)
A quote from "Dreams from my father" (the same page where BHO tells Auma how he dumped the white girl):
ReplyDelete"Maybe even if she’d been black it still wouldn’t have worked out. I mean, there are several black ladies out there who’ve broken my heart just as good.”
Assuming they exist, it's a mystery why those "black ladies who broke Barak's heart" don't tell their stories to the tabloids. Maybe they're all extremely decent, disinterested peersons, and afraid of publicity...

ReplyDeleteTo the anonymous who hasn't read Dreams and yet "seriously doubt" Steve's account:
See page 210-211
Obama doesn't say that he pushed her away because she's white. The fatal blow to the relationship was her aksing him why is it that black people have to noisy at the theater. He knew then that there was an unbridgeable gulf between them.
"What sealed it for me was watching the clip of Barry throw out the first pitch for MLB opening day during his first year as president. That was the gayest throw from a 'documented' straight guy ever caught on film."
ReplyDeleteI'd say he was a nerd, but then it's unlikely he could have gotten elected President. Still, as Steve has documented, black guys don't play baseball anymore. How good are you at handball, go, or buzkashi?
I agree with rob: a white woman would have set off too many black northerners' and white southerners' buttons if he were aiming for POTUS.
>The evidence points to Barry having relationships with men and not women before the age of 28.[...]Hence the complete void before Michelle.<
ReplyDeleteSome men are so introverted and shy - let's chin up and call it chaste - that they don't have multiple girlfriends before the marriage; maybe just one, or none. The old falsehood: he who is not a raging Lothario is a Queer.
Besides all the other reasons you can tell the story of the New York white girl is made up, there's the paddling around her family's lake in a canoe. That would fit with the Midwest (Ayers/Oughton) but not the old money Northeast where you'd find rowboats or sailboats instead of canoes.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the dated boys comment. George Bush the younger as well. (c.v. Jeff Gannon).
ReplyDeleteDoes anybody know about GWB's girlfriends? Or John Kerry? Why do you all find the silence on Obama so weird?
ReplyDeleteBarack's white girlfriend is a fiction based on William Ayers's memories of Diana Oughton.
ReplyDeleteWeird - Cashill just came out with a new piece on this very question [Lucianne Goldberg is fronting it on her must-reads of the day].
Either Cashill lurks at iSteve or Steve lurks at Cashill.com [or both] or maybe it's just serendipity [great minds think alike?].
Barry's political handlers would go to any lengths [even death threats] to shut down former male lovers and prevent them from going public.
ReplyDeleteI don't know how far Komment Kontrol will allow us to wander into Michelle-as-Beard territory, but:
1) The Donald Young story ought to be bigger than
{Lindbergh Baby + Marilyn Monroe + Mary Pinchot Meyer + Mary Jo Kopechne} X {about positive infinity}
[and you might could even throw the Grassy Knoll into that equation].
2) Speaking of Cashill, he has also written about the absolutely bizarre relationship between young Barry Soetoro Dunham and Frank Marshall Davis [and something tells me that we still have a lot to learn about the grandfather, Stanley Armour Dunham - who I think was probably a world-class creep himself - if nothing else, he was at least an enabler in the Barry-FMD fiasco].
3) I think there's a reason that a fellow as effeminate as Rahm Emanuel has such intimate access to Obama.
4) I think there's a reason that Lindsey Graham thinks so highly of Rahm Emanuel.
5) And on and on and on - just in the last week alone, we have had to endure Kitty Kelly, a potential supreme court nominee, new rules on hospital visitations, etc etc etc - from what I hear, the upper echelons of our society are simply infested with that crowd.
PS: If you want to read Obama in his own words [if not Cass Sunstein's words], then just peruse the old Chicago Law School exams - you don't have to glance at more than one or two of them to realize that Obama is absolutely OBSESSED with this topic.
PPS: I know that Steve's pet theory is that Obama disappears for hours at a time to inhale some nicotine, but I suspect that it's not Marlboros he's puffing on.
I think very few people care who Obama's girlfriend was when he was 23.
ReplyDeleteAre you kidding? Many, many people would care. Any woman who could step forward and prove (or even credibly assert!) that she was Barry's college girlfriend would become a media sensation. What woman could resist being lionized, and possibly paid large sums for her recollections? Obviously no such woman exists.
The fact that the nations first black...president is married to a dark black woman is VERY VERY good...
ReplyDeleteYou're suggesting the nation would elect a black man who was married to someone other than a black woman?
If Obama had married a white woman it would have hurt his support among blacks and, I admit, among whites, too.
The political handlers would never go to such extremes to shut down various female lovers during Barry's single dating life. If they existed we would have heard from those ladies. They would be proud to announce it.
ReplyDeleteForget about one of Obama's female ex-lovers coming forward. I would settle for an old photograph of Obama and a possible girlfriend at this point. Even a third party who remembered "Barack and the girl he was dating".
Steve, please don't make me plough through a 650 page book on His Highness. Is that one sentence the only mention the author makes of Obama's girlfriends? Does he cite a source?
I'm a bit surprised that so little is known about O's life. Is everyone frightened of being bumped off by the FBI or bullied by the taxman? Why are there virtually no anecdotes about him? I suspect that all the talk about freedom of speech must be largely empty boasting.
ReplyDelete"Her voice sounded like a wind chime"
ReplyDeleteThat narrows it down.
"How many serious white girlfriends has Obama had?"
ReplyDeleteHow about "ALL OF THEM" for an answer?
I think it's fairly certain that Obama only caught jungle fever when he started to envision a national political career, since he knew being married to a white woman would severely impact his electability and credibility in the black community. (Harold Ford Jr. never learned this lesson)
I would guess that Michelle is the only black woman that he's ever dated, and we definitely don't have any other evidence to suggest otherwise.
"Steve, I want to present a logical argument that solves this puzzle: The evidence points to Barry having relationships with men and not women before the age of 28. ReplyDeleteHomos gossip and they will talk about closeted men provided that they are handsome, even if they are sympathetic as to why they have to remain closeted, they just can't help themselves. If Obama had any boyfriends in the past, it would have been in the gay media long before he ran for president. Axelrod et al would not be able to shut up and threaten everybody. The info would have gotten out there and there's no way Axelrod could stop it. He's a political fixer for chrissakes, not the KGB. The likely reason why there are so many gaps in Obama's dating life is probably because most of his girlfriends were white and that would have made him look like an oreo to most of his black voters.
Are you kidding? Many, many people would care. Any woman who could step forward and prove (or even credibly assert!) that she was Barry's college girlfriend would become a media sensation.
ReplyDeleteReally? Really? We've had a few presidents before Obama, and I don't recall the media going all out looking for their old college buddies and old flames. One may occasionally give an interview, but it doesn't seem to get much coverage.
Agreed with Pino. GWB's former girlfriends, Clinton's many (before marrying Hillary that is), and Kerry's (in between marriages, and before) were all well documented. Heck, Reagan, and Bush the Elder's girlfriends, and Jimmy Carter's, were known, if not widely discussed.
ReplyDeleteWhat is rather telling though is how many White women find Obama hot and attractive. More evidence on Steve's notion of fair women, dark men. It is instructive how many female writers (most of them married) have documented their sexual fantasies about Obama. Obama, if he had married a White woman, probably would have even more support among White female voters, though less among Black women.
Good points on Lindsay Grahamnesty. I would say that the desire to normalize or make acceptable gay/lesbian behavior comes from women. Most straight women would desire that men be divided into two: Alpha males, and vaguely gay Betas who would never bother them. A cursory inspection of American Idol or "Glee" on Fox will confirm this.
The National Enquirer regularly has stuff on Obama being gay, so that idea has certainly not been absent from cultural awareness, at least on the tabloid level.
It's precisely these types of Opinions and prejudices and steretypes about black-men that will keep this blog on the fringes..
ReplyDeletegeez, if only you could look at yourselves.

Word. This thread is an embarrassment.
"As for his book, he didn't want to say that he had a bunch of smart, pretty, and talented white girlfriends, with nary a black woman to be found. Then he did his duty, married a black women, closed his eyes and thought of the presidency."
ReplyDeleteRob, you disparaged psychic power on one of my posts a week ago, you are as talented as Carnac the Magnificent!
Im sure this has been mentioned before - we are in Manchurian candidate territory.
ReplyDeleteA man with almost no past, no friends, almost no-one remembers him, he has published nothing but his books, no trace of him at all in the public sphere.
"He's a black supremacist, and there's an end on it."
ReplyDeleteWell, it is if your IQ approximates room temperature...in an igloo.
"Steve wrote about this and it turns out that there are none. Barry met Michelle when he was about 28 years old and she is only the black girl on the record."
ReplyDeleteOf course there are no white girls on the record either.
"The evidence points to Barry having relationships with men and not women before the age of 28."
Then why have they not come forward either?
"The political handlers would never go to such extremes to shut down various female lovers during Barry's single dating life."
Why not?
"One argument against this logic is that Barry dated only white women before he met Michelle."
Then why have they not come forward, does the CIA have a "kill only white girls and fags" directive?
"But Obama never has had white girl obsession rumors lingering around him. "
Imagine, that, a black man married to a black woman for 20 years with two children who look just like him not having a "white girl obsession...what are the odds!?
"even if Steve is a libertine (which I doubt he is) how strange is it that he's so incessently hurt by black men who stick with black women? What in God's name could possibly explain that far out perspective?"
ReplyDeleteGreat observation. Take it from me though, not unusual; I would say that the majority of white males are angrier at a black man who does not date white women than one who does...but the thing that makes white guys want to fight is when you date an Asian. I could tell you some stores...
"Of course, I do recognize you as the guy who every now and then tries to rebut Steve's finding with "you see everything through a racial prism, Mr. Sailer" and nothing else."
ReplyDeleteWhat makes you think it's always the same "guy."
"Is it so strange that a half-white guy might be attracted to white women?"
Well Cordelia; is it so strange that a half-black guy might be attracted to black women, and got his wife pregnant twice through natural means?
"Does anybody know about GWB's girlfriends? Or John Kerry? Why do you all find the silence on Obama so weird?"
You make another good point Richard. When you start putting ads on your website, I think you owe me royalties for all of the tutelage I gave you.
"1) The Donald Young story ought to be bigger than
ReplyDelete{Lindbergh Baby + Marilyn Monroe + Mary Pinchot Meyer + Mary Jo Kopechne} X {about positive infinity}
[and you might could even throw the Grassy Knoll into that equation]."
I'm with you Anonymous, I mean what are the odds of a black man getting shot in the ghetto!?
"I would guess that Michelle is the only black woman that he's ever dated, and we definitely don't have any other evidence to suggest otherwise."
ReplyDeleteOf course we don't have any evidence to suggest LIKEwise either! But I know, that's insignificant.
"So a serious biography must include every girlfriend someone has had? I think very few people care who Obama's girlfriend was when he was 23."
ReplyDeleteI have to agree. I'm not even interested in the wives of major leaders. I know it's not fashionable anymore, but there used to be this thing called a personal life and it wasn't everyone's business. I don't know when we all turned into an old ladies sewing circle.
What stereotypes and opinions? Seriously, I would like to know what sort of opinions are considered "fringe" now that a man who consorted with Louis Farrakhan and Rev. Wright is President?
ReplyDeleteOr indeed, how anything is fringe when "racist" has been so overused as to become meaningless. Bill Maher says Tea Partiers are racist (they are mostly White, female, over 55, and small busines owners or middling professionals). Bill Cosby says people who don't like Obama are racist. Frank Rich of the NYT says ObamaCare critics are racist.
Throwing Racist around, makes nothing taboo. You cannot as a practical matter, make popular culture a measure of which social taboo is broken next, and get all taboos broken.
Speculation about Obama, the frequency of homosexuality in the Black community, acceptance of it, his relative masculinity, and views of White women about Black men are things everyone thought anyway but would not voice.
You can thank Obama, Rev. Wright, Louis Farrakhan, Al Sharpton, Bill Maher, Frank Rich, the NYT, and Bill Cosby for eroding any modicum of restraint in expressing what everyone really thought anyway.
If Barack Obama were just a lawyer, he wouldn't have women fantasize about him. He's not really a great looking guy. It's the power of the Presidency.
ReplyDeleteThere's something fishy with Obama. The transferring collleges, the Law Review editorship at Harvard without really publishing anything, the lack of knowledge about former relationships. Maybe that's why white Southerners, correctly, think the guy's basically a foreigner. We really don't know who the fuck Barack Obama is.
Lots of eye-opening, sourced, information
ReplyDeletehere.
"It's precisely these types of Opinions and prejudices and steretypes about black-men that will keep this blog on the fringes..
ReplyDeletegeez, if only you could look at yourselves.
how ridiculous you are!!!!"
It is precisely this kind of out-of -the box speculation that is not generally permitted, but to which curious, insightful and creative minds minds are notoriously prone. Everyone with an odd theory knows he is likely wrong at least in part, but discussing it facilitates the thinking process. Those who are never given to considering anything other than the official line handed them are by definition incurious and dull. If that is what you are comfortable with, you are in luck, most outlets cater to your very typical type of vacuous thinking.
There's something fishy with Obama. The transferring collleges, the Law Review editorship at Harvard without really publishing anything, the lack of knowledge about former relationships.
ReplyDeleteThe radical associations, the radical parents, the bowing to America's enemies, the constant mistreatment of America's allies, the constant references to issues of race, the statements critical of ordinary Americans, the spendthrift ways...
I wonder at what point America will finally realize what it has bought? At what point will Obama's supporters come to realize how little he cares about them or their country? I look at the mess in Great Britain and the new lead another leftist party, the Liberal Democrats, has in the polls and I think "Well, maybe never."
Anonymous said this first:
ReplyDelete"Axelrod et al would not be able to shut up and threaten everybody. The info would have gotten out there and there's no way Axelrod could stop it. He's a political fixer for chrissakes, not the KGB."
Then Anonymous immediately contradicts the above with this:
"The likely reason why there are so many gaps in Obama's dating life is probably because most of his girlfriends were white and that would have made him look like an oreo to most of his black voters."
So the white girls must have been shut up and locked down by some sort of KGB-like suppression action. We know this because exactly NONE HAVE COME FORWARD.
I also like the other commenter point about this entire discussion being centered on Obama's SINGLE life and not his married life. There is no reason for former girlfriends to stay silent. As if former mistresses of famous married men stay silent in the modern US culture anyway! What a laugh that is.
And no one is saying that the former girlfriends need to be front page news. It's just obvious that a complete absence of former girlfriends points to a lavender sort of deduction to be made here. Which fits the profile of the ultimate New World Order Leader. He is alienated from the general population over which he rules, in every way, and on every level. Racially, ethnically, religously, sexually. Uncle Joe Stalin would approve.
1."It's precisely these types of Opinions and prejudices and steretypes about black-men that will keep this blog on the fringes.."
ReplyDeleteIt's understandable that there is such speculation about such a topic since with THIS Presidential candidate, the fourth estate didn't even TRY to do its job, and that is the travesty of it all. Never has the modern American electorate known less about the background of one who would be President.
2. I agree with whoever said that if he were gay, it's likely enough in the gay community would be privy to it that we'd know...unless he had flings with his Muslim/Pakistani buddies, about whom we know next to nothing. In that case, his secret would be safe, most likely.
I don't think he's gay, though. The most likely reason we know nothing about any girlfriends is that they were white or they were, like Barry, into dope, or both. All grown up now and likely successful themselves, they've decided to remain mum.
Barry doesn't seem to be genuinely sociable any way. His circle of friends was likely to have been quite small.
3. Tell me, those who read the book...does Obama ever provide a decent explanation to his white girlfriend why it is that blacks feel compelled to shout, chatter, guffaw, point, stand up and wag fingers, etc. in the theater? Other than just being social a-holes, that is. Because I'd like to know too.
"(And, then, maybe that he decided instead to marry a black woman at least in part to further his political career...?)"
ReplyDeleteExactly. She also helped heal his inner tragic mulatto, but her real strength was the neighborhood she provided street cred to an aspirational mixed breed from Hawaii and the Ivy League, who more than likely also talked and acted white, allowing him to gain entry into the South Side's establishment. It's the same pattern of naked opportunism shown with his association with Reverend Wright.
Homos gossip and they will talk about closeted men provided that they are handsome, even if they are sympathetic as to why they have to remain closeted, they just can't help themselves. ...Here in Chicago, depending on what community you're in, "everyone" knows things about Dr. Utopia too. Our current president, back when he was a "community organizer" for ACORN, a state senator, and an adjunct law professor, was indiscrete and up to all sorts of shennanigans by all accounts. He not only sat in the pews at Trinity United Church gleefully taking in all the hatred and paranoid delusions of Jeremiah Wright, but like many black men at Trinity he'd then find somewhere up north to "unwind" when fiery sermons couldn't quench the same thirsts as, say, nights spent at the baths. In Chicago, guys in their late 40s and early 50s, who admit they used to go to bathhouses, love talking about a skinny black guy with big ears who said he was a "state rep", whenever he'd go to Man's Country to be serviced by white men there...

BAKER: ...This is a mini-question that keeps escaping my mind, and that could fit right at this juncture, because I want to get the sweep of your narrative. You mentioned that when you met Obama at Occidental, that he was the tall, charismatic guy around campus. Do you have any theory about why his Columbia years seem to be so hazy, and that there have been many reports of people saying that when they talk to classmates - people who were there, that nobody seems to remember him. Does that seem to - do you have any thoughts on that?
DREW: Oh yeah, I should write an article about it. One of the ironies of charismatic leadership is that a person can be charismatic in one venue, and then you move into another country, or another state, and they're no longer charismatic. And the secret is the support group that surrounds them. When Barack Obama was a young man at Occidental College, his sophomore year, he had a very wealthy patron in Hasan Chandoo. They had just a wonderful big house, where they threw lavish parties; Chandoo was throwing the money around, Obama was dressed in the nicest, slickest clothes. When I first met Obama and Chandoo, I swear to you I thought they were both gay, and I thought they were both wealthy.
BAKER: Yeah, right.
DREW: So he was able to create an incredibly positive image. And what happened is Chandoo graduated that year, and I think - this is my take, and I'm doing this on the basis of understanding charismatic leaders a little - is what happened is when Obama knew that Chandoo was gonna leave Occidental College, he knew that the money supply was gone, the big house was gone, the parties were gone, and he thought it was better for him to get the heck outta there and go to Columbia. And because Chandoo wasn't financing his lifestyle anymore, I don't believe Obama was ever able to create that same charismatic presence on the Columbia campus...
Well let’s all look at the bright side, at least this reduces the odds of him being a ‘closet gay’.
ReplyDelete"Barry doesn't seem to be genuinely sociable any way. His circle of friends was likely to have been quite small."
ReplyDeleteSeems to me everybody's overthinking this.
Occam's Razor say's Obama's exactly what he seems: a very dark-skinned White, autistic-y, nerd. So the obvious conclusion is, he was a virgin until he married Michelle at 28. No ex-White (or Black) girlfriends (or boyfriends) have come forward because there are none.
Jack said: "If Barack Obama were just a lawyer, he wouldn't have women fantasize about him. He's not really a great looking guy. It's the power of the Presidency."
ReplyDeleteYes and no. I think pretty many women would still fantasize about him. He's black enough (took a while for him to get it right) to be cool, hip and make white women feel they're being cool/hip/progressive/rebellious by being attracted to him. Yet he's white enough to seem non-threatening. He's not the black guy who's going to show up at a white girl apartment unannounced, get some, get drunk, get rough with her and then clean out her purse. (Example based on real-life stories told me in my old neighborhood.) He's the black guy a white girl can take home to her family, knowing they'll take one look at him, swallow hard, and then invite him to stay for dinner. He's the black guy equivalent of a temporary tattoo.
"There's something fishy with Obama. The transferring collleges, the Law Review editorship at Harvard without really publishing anything, the lack of knowledge about former relationships. Maybe that's why white Southerners, correctly, think the guy's basically a foreigner. We really don't know who the fuck Barack Obama is."
It's as though there are gaps during which Obama paused to figure out who he was going to be next, to craft and perfect the image he thought best-suited to the circumstances he was about to enter. Cool black college guy, intellectual black post-grad, earnest and very black community organizer, etc. I really believe, though, that some of this is no more sinister than just the narcissist's overwhelming need always to be seen in a favorable light by those he wishes to impress favorably. Still, as you say, there's something fishy about Obama, fishy and slippery.
Really? Really? We've had a few presidents before Obama, and I don't recall the media going all out looking for their old college buddies and old flames. One may occasionally give an interview, but it doesn't seem to get much coverage.
ReplyDeleteAre you nuts? This is a President whom the media considers wildly attractive, and who is, from all accounts, attractive to female voters. You would think the Obama-loving media would be panting to write a story that all the Obama-loving female readers would want to read. Yet we have nothing. Why is that?
Yeah, some in the gay community gossip, but like all minority groups that wish to shed their past history of shame or ridicule, they try to link their group to "greatness"--and so they make up things. Think of all the historical figures gays claim were gay--some of course, were, but for many others there is simply no evidence that suggests that. One of these days I expect I'll pick up a paper and see that they're claiming JFK was gay. Or...maybe they already have.
ReplyDelete..but the thing that makes white guys want to fight is when you date an Asian. I could tell you some stores...
ReplyDeletePREACH!!! I've got a thing for Asian girls myself, I feel quite possessive of them which is kinda funny. Yesterday I was eating at a Chicago food place and I saw a table full of Asian girls, must have been like 6 of them, and a black guy. I must say that this did not go down well with me, I was like, WTF is this ****? lol.
"though I'll admit I'm surprised Bill Clinton hasn't done it already."
ReplyDeleteI think Bill and Hillary have an understanding.
Obama and Chandoo sitting on a couch in a totally non-gay fashion.
ReplyDeleteI'll be more specific than I was in an earlier comment. In Norfolk, CT (up on the border with MA and at least formerly a very WASP-y weekend/summer destination for people from NY and Boston), it's commonly supposed that the passage in Obama's book is about a girl he dated whose family has a place there.
ReplyDeleteHer family is part of the extended Childs family that owns Great Mountain Forest in Norfolk and Falls Village: http://www.greatmountainforest.org/
The Childses do indeed know everything about the natural history of their corner of CT, and they have the intimate association with the Yale Forestry School to prove it. They also have a lot of old houses, particularly around what I'm sure would be the "round" pond Obama inaccurately describes. (Although it does *seem* pretty round from the ground.)
If you click on the interactive map at that site, you'll find Tobey Pond in the upper right quadrant. That would be the pond in question. And yes, the old-money WASPs do paddle around it in canoes, among other things. They also very kindly rent a beach there to the town for public use at a dollar a year: they're very good people.
Which is why the girl in question has never come forward: that's not how these people act. And I'm not going to bust her, by the way. But unless everyone in Norfolk is lying about it, there's your answer right there.
To those who think that this is unimportant or that people don't care:
ReplyDelete1. Ask yourself: is the issue of whom he dated before Michelle more important or less important than the size of Michelle's biceps, the fact that Obama killed a fly during an interview, the vegetables in the White House garden or Michelle's shoes? Compare how many column inches have been devoted to each of the latter topics, compared to the former.
2. Obama wrote a 400 page autobiography of the first 30 years of his life. Steve is an expert on this, having written a book on the topic. A new biography of over 600 pages has recently been published. Thus, over 1000 pages of material (not counting the Audacity of Hope). Clearly, people are interested in Obama's life.
Further, recall that Dreams was prompted by the fact that he was the first AA HLR president and the second by his "historic" election as POTUS, ie the first AA president. Further, Dreams is subtitled "A story of race and inheritance". Clearly, talking about Obama's race is unavoidable. You can't say that his race is important when discussing his accomploishments but unimportant when discussing his relationships (it is obviously important in his family relationships and those of his mentors and contacts).
Finally, Sailer asks a good, honest question because it is established fact that some characters in Dreams are conflated or created, in other words, not every scene in dreams is literally true. If a young, charismatic, handsome, intelligent man has had no serious girlfriends, that is interesting. If he only has girlfriends of a particular race, that too is interesting. If he ended a relationship because of race, that too is interesting. We don't know which, if any, of these scenarios are true, but to say, preemptively, that it is unimportant to discuss them because they are of no inherent interest, while acknowledging that a 1000 pages of biography about Obama *are* interesting smacks of hypocrisy and political hackery.
Truth said: "Well Cordelia; is it so strange that a half-black guy might be attracted to black women, and got his wife pregnant twice through natural means?"
ReplyDeleteNot at all. I was just reacting to mnuez who said: "...even if Steve is a libertine (which I doubt he is) how strange is it that he's so incessently hurt by black men who stick with black women?"
My point was that Obama is not 100% black -- he is 50% black and 50% white, so it wouldn't be strange (at least to me) if he had gone for a white woman.
And it bugs me that everyone, including Obama himself, refers to Obama as a black man. He is a HALF black man and a HALF white man.
This is a President whom the media considers wildly attractive
ReplyDeleteThe media is a funny old beast. sections of this same media promote Paris Hilton as attractive, I've yet to meet any heterosexual man who would so much as give her the time of day. I suppose that constant cheerleading must have some effect though.
"He's not the black guy who's going to show up at a white girl apartment unannounced, get some, get drunk, get rough with her and then clean out her purse. (Example based on real-life stories told me in my old neighborhood.)"
ReplyDeleteNow Kylie, you know that what you wrote was like porn to some of the female readers here, don't you?
Let's just say that I think your paragraph assisted a few young ladies with their "lubrication."
Norfolk, Conn. anonymous: Thank you for coming forward. Too bad the thread seems to have died just about the time you did so.
ReplyDeleteDear Norfolk Anon:
ReplyDeleteThanks.
Is this Connecticut girlfrien different from the anthropology student at the U. of Chicago in 1987-88?
PREACH!!! I've got a thing for Asian girls myself, I feel quite possessive of them which is kinda funny.
ReplyDeleteA thing for "Asian" girls? All 2 billion of them? Filipinos, Mongolians, Vietnamese, Lebanese, Yemenese, Sentinelese, Bengalis, Siberians and Kazakhs, too?
I'm not really sure that many white women really fantasize about Obama. I'm only about 30, but I don't know any who lust after him. Maybe 40+ women do.
ReplyDeleteThey voted for him because he's pro-abortion and gay rights.
Truth wrote: Now Kylie, you know that what you wrote was like porn to some of the female readers here, don't you?
ReplyDeleteLet's just say that I think your paragraph assisted a few young ladies with their "lubrication."
It's racist, misogynistic comments like yours, Truth, that give this blog a bad name.
Ref. Pino Agave's important commentary: Having worked in a high schools, I can attest that the climate of the times when BHO was in high school in the specific setting he was in, provided little or no racial barrier to dating and to reasonably discreet inter-racial sex. Likewise, discrete homosexual inclinations were not socially repressed. With regard to David's post, the climate of the times was one in which heterosexual inclinations would be very easily consummated in not mere one night stands but in at least a sustained relationship with a female that would be of typical affair length--"going steady" etc.. There is known to me not a single credible mention of any sustained relationship by BHO during these high school years. His "dating" seems to have the resonance of the very sort of formal overt companionship that is devoid of sexual activity and very very typical of latent or fearful homosexuality at that time. The absence or fragility of a heterosexual orientation would have been keenly perceived and sifted out among the whisperings of the abler high school peers. A larger issue indicated by Pino Agave is the absence of the degree of on-the-record commentary generally about BHO that would be forthcoming if unfettered, uninhibited. He moved in and out of social circles during his high school years and was widely accepted. There is nothing like the normal public commentary that should be forthcoming. The Secret Service has a legit role to play in interviewing people who might have information (of interest to assets of foreign nations, BTW ), but it is not unreasonable to conjecture that such "badge flashing" has been done in a way to inhibit commentary generally.
ReplyDeleteThen, the political handlers can also add their bit. We have very selective information , often of hazy origin, if widely printed and reprinted. There seems no clear information of BHO having had normal sexual intercourse with women--disallowing awkward one night stands--before he met Michelle Robinson, himself at age 28. The predictive data that a sociologist could bring to bear upon what is known, would yield a very high likelihood of BHO having basically a homosexual orientation. Too, Frank Davis, an important element of his life during high school years, was bisexual, it seems, and known as such. In fact, I ponder whether all the ballyhoo about Frank Davis' Marxism is really mostly smokescreen. Stan Dunham, BHO's grandfather, was about 300% heterosexual. If he sensed his grandson had an abnormal sexual compass, he would very likely have introduced his teenage, half-Black grandson to a bisexual Black male (otherwise similarly situated racially ) for the hope of SEXUAL orientation guidance--not political guidance. In fact, the
c o m m o n "knowledge" that BHO's relationship with Frank Davis was saliently involved with race and politics is just possibly the sort of dissimulation that crops up all the time in the written "record" about the President. Davis had the sort of all consuming involvement in sex that is all too common among homosexuals. It is quite gratuitous to assume that BHO is anything other than homosexual with several attendant character deficits that render him especially dependent upon "handlers" The question becomes not "Will the real BHO please stand up" but "Where is reality in the contemporary American media?"
@ James Kabala: glad to be of service. It was just bugging me seeing all the speculation when I'm almost certain I know who the New York heartbreaker was.
ReplyDelete@Steve Sailer: I believe she's a different girl, yeah--although I'm less positive about that as I don't know her or her history well. But I can confirm that her voice does sound exactly like a wind chime. What an uncanny ear and gift for simile our President has!
I'm kidding. Anyway, another notable member of the Childs clan is Michael Lewis's editor at Norton, Starling (aka Star) Lawrence. A good rule of thumb: any guy named Starling and called Star is very unlikely not to be a Childs of some sort.
For those who want to know more about the Norfolk, CT, a pretty good 2004 NYT profile of the town is here (reproduced on a real-estate website): http://www.harneyre.com/thisArticle.asp?ArticleID=3
ReplyDeleteThe NYT also covered a spat that characteristically pitted the ultra-reserved WASPy weekender culture against George Bush's college roommate Roland Betts, who wanted to build a golf club there for even-richer arrivistes:
http://www.nytimes.com/2005/09/06/nyregion/06norfolk.html?_r=1&scp=1&sq=rich%20vs.%20golfing%20rich&st=cse
Betts lost, shut down by an environmental beef of some sort. But really it was all about the vulgarity.
The why another one question is a good one.
ReplyDeleteMy guess would be that the "I had a hot, rich, classy white girl after my body but I dumped her because of my ethical standards" isn't exactly true. Either she never existed (at least as a rich girl) or they went out a couple of times & she wasn't interested. He would hardly be the first guy to exagerate but if so she may not even know of her pivotal role.
The media tried to elevate Clinton to the status of Sex Object, too. At the beginning of the Clinton Admin there were mutliple stories about women who had sexual fantasies about Clinton.
ReplyDeleteThis is funny because, objectively, George W Bush is by far the best looking of our last three presidents, yet I don't remember any mainstream news stories about women having sexual fantasies of him.
To elevate someone to the status of sex object is to change people's view of that person from the rational to the irrational. Leftists like voters to have an irrational faith in leftist politicians, and that's why we keep hearing these stories.
First I've heard about the "noisy blacks in theater" incident. But what an amazing cultural trait. In Reno in 1991 I went to see the Eddie Murphy flick "Boomerang" (I know I know). A black man in his 40's was sitting in the back row amid an otherwise all-white audience. He started shouting, "that's right Eddie, you tell 'em Eddie!" When I gently reminded him we hadn't come to hear him rant, he threatened to shoot me.
ReplyDeleteStan Dunham, BHO's grandfather, was about 300% heterosexual. If he sensed his grandson had an abnormal sexual compass, he would very likely have introduced his teenage, half-Black grandson to a bisexual Black male (otherwise similarly situated racially ) for the hope of SEXUAL orientation guidance--not political guidance.
ReplyDeleteWeird - I always thought that [more or less] exactly the opposite must have been the case - that Stanley Armour Dunham was a weirdo, a creep, a jerk, a drunk, probably at least bisexual himself, and that he took little Barry to Frank Marshall Davis for "orientation guidance" in how to be bi/homo [rather than hetero].
"Yeah, some in the gay community gossip, but like all minority groups that wish to shed their past history of shame or ridicule, they try to link their group to "greatness"--and so they make up things. Think of all the historical figures gays claim were gay--some of course, were, but for many others there is simply no evidence that suggests that. One of these days I expect I'll pick up a paper and see that they're claiming JFK was gay. Or...maybe they already have."
ReplyDeleteIt has nothing to do with greatness. Gays are very superficial and they care about whether that straight handsome man they lust over would ever play for their team. Obama is considered to be handsome by many gay men and if there was any inkling of gay rumors, it would have shown up in the gay media. Other than that crazy gay man who has been selling his unbelievable story to the tabloids, no such thing has happened because there is no evidence of Obama being gay. So yes, while their claims of homosexuality among famous historical figures is usually wishful thinking, their claims of homosexuality among famous celebrities and politicians today are usually correct. The celebrity or politician just needs to be handsome for them to take notice and that is why they didn't gossip about Eric Massa because he's old and fat.
"It's racist, misogynistic comments like yours, Truth, that give this blog a bad name."
ReplyDeleteWhat the hell did I write that was either "racist" or "misogynistic"? You've really been programed for newspeak haven't you there Ampleforth?
Tell him Kylie, you've read Harlequin Romances.
(And let's not even get Whiskey started about Rogues and Dark Men!)
"This is funny because, objectively, George W Bush is by far the best looking of our last three presidents,"
ReplyDeleteAdmitedly Jack, this is from a Dude's perspective.

"Truth" considers such statements as he made reflective of some kind of animal charm. Just as he thinks is arguments are intelligent, and his "bon mots" are witty. He is unaware that he reinforces virtually every negative perception that people are likely to associate with blacks. If his goal were to represent his race in a favorable light (and I don't believe it is, nor should it be), he would rank as better than Snoop Dogg, but worse than a minstrel troop.
""Truth" considers such statements as he made reflective of some kind of animal charm. Just as he thinks is arguments are intelligent, and his "bon mots" are witty."
ReplyDeleteGuilty on all three counts.
"If his goal were to represent his race in a favorable light"
ReplyDeleteAnon, I know you don't know me, but do I strike you as someone who's ever hada a "goal"?
"He is unaware that he reinforces virtually every negative perception that people are likely to associate with blacks."
ReplyDeleteWell, generally I do stay quiet in movie theatres, Dawg...unless it's an Ingmar Bergman revival, and Wild Strawberries is playing.
And it bugs me that everyone, including Obama himself, refers to Obama as a black man. He is a HALF black man and a HALF white man.
ReplyDeleteWhat do you mean it "bugs" you? Is everyone suppose to drop what he is doing and run to your aid in an effort to hurriedly alleviate you of the pain caused by that which "bugs" the great and mighty Cordellia? Do you know what bugs me? This whole racial game of black and white. People should be described by their actual skin color; namely, skin colors ranging from a dark brown to a light pinkish complexion. The people called "black" are actually mostly a brown or dark brown skin tone. "White" people are a peach, pinkish type color. No one is actually black-skinned or white-skinned (and if they are, they are in the minority). That, Queen Cordellia, is what BUGS me.
Do you know what bugs me? This whole racial game of black and white. People should be described by their actual skin color; namely, skin colors ranging from a dark brown to a light pinkish complexion.
ReplyDeleteSo does that mean we're allowed to call him purple?
"Stanley Dunham a weirdo..."
ReplyDeleteWhat credibly emerges is that Stan Dunham in terms of his "wrong side of the tracks" social origins (the family of Harry Armour, his suicidal mother being Ruth Lucille Armour Dunham ) had widespread social approval, interacted well with folks at this stratum, was a successful (but not outstanding) salesman, was a hard worker (being entrusted perhaps as a boy of elementary school age to "run" booze during Prohibition (maybe from the cafe/ "cafe"/ managed by Ralph Waldo Emerson Dunham and Ruth Lucille Dunham) ?? managed a business, ascended in the US Army to sergeant status, etc. Stanley Ann Dunham's second husband, Soreto (sp.) was a "father" to young Barry but the viability of the marriage did not last long, thanks to the schizoid and castrative nature of Ann Dunham. The genuinely loving father surrogate that BHO had since early adolescence was Stan Dunham. He appears to have put in contact young Barry with Frank Davis. While this relationship has been officially portrayed as one mediated by issues of race and social values,
it is highly likely that a wayward or "versatile" sexual orientation would have been the central focus if if young Barry was carrying that sort of baggage when Davis became a very important part of his life. And within the severe limitations of the situation, contact with Davis may have been in this central respect a productive (mitigating ) influence.
The President gives no indication of having c o n f r o n t e d
the effects upon himself of his relationship with his schizoid (man-hating?) mother and the social values she ground into him. Girlfriends--white or black? There's scant evidence the President had normal heterosexual desires during his formative years. With respect to the "running" of booze--it is noteworthy that Kansas had strict Prohibition for years before the federal law was passed. Thus the business opportunities in a place like Wichita were quite ripe for those willing to get a toe over the line. Frank Davis spent several years in Wichita and was there at the same time the younger Stan Dunham was, but the better information is that they had no contact back then (?) Harry Armour has been listed as a coal delivery man (having his own truck) at the time his very young daughter and Ralph Waldo Emerson Dunham were running a cafe. That such "dots" cluster is , of course, no evicence of actual connection re "bootlegging" Much of Barry's involvements with reefer (very extensive ) would replicate Stan's youth. Except that booze is lots more "testicle friendly" than reefer is.
>The people called "black" are actually mostly a brown or dark brown skin tone. "White" people are a peach, pinkish type color. No one is actually black-skinned or white-skinned<
ReplyDeleteThanks for enlightening us, Capt. Obvious. (*Yawns*)
>"Truth" considers such statements as he made reflective of some kind of animal charm. Just as he thinks is arguments are intelligent, and his "bon mots" are witty. He is unaware that he reinforces virtually every negative perception that people are likely to associate with blacks.<
You left out trash-talking.
Why is this an issue? Can you leave President Obama's love life alone. Are you really upset that there are Black men who don't worship the altar of Whiteness and White womanhood? Why are you disrespecting President Obama's choice of wife.
ReplyDeletePlease leave Obama's lovelife alone!
La Reyna
Re La Reyna
ReplyDeleteThe issue is not invading a zone of personal privacy but attempting to guage the truthfulness of a cultivated image. I don't care to see or read a descrption of how he makes love. Given the times and setting he spent his adolescent in, there is a shocking lack of direct information from identifiable sources concerning him. In Barry Obama's high school setting, the presence or lack of a genuine heterosexual dimension to his relationship with females would have been correctly sensed by numerous students. Enhancing a candidate's background is a permissible cosmetic in politics. Inventing it represents a new phase of degeneration (When do we hit bottom in America?).
Why are all you nerds so concerned about Obama's sex life? Is it because you don't have any sex yourselves?
ReplyDeleteAnd why do some of you think its bad when black men date or marry white women? Are you afraid there won't be enough white chicks left for you?
