History Hinders Diversification of Portland
by Amelia Templeton
Economists say unemployment is high in Portland and wages are low. But the city is still attracting young, white professionals from the Northeast and Midwest.
... The city's entire population is growing, but Portland is still about 80 percent white, making it one of the most homogeneous metropolitan cities in the country. Many of the migrants don't have jobs, kids or a mortgage. So why do they keep coming? ...
"Talent is becoming more concentrated in some cities and moving away from other cities," says Joe Cortright, an economist standing in the rain at the food cart.
Twenty years ago, the percent of people with college degrees in Portland was lower than the national average. Now, it's more than 10 points higher — about 40 percent. And Cortright says the grads aren't just coming for high-tech jobs.
"People in the Portland metropolitan area are more likely to be engaged in almost any form of outdoor recreation," he says. "We have more microbreweries than any other city in the United States."
Turns out the stereotypes about Portland are largely true.
"I do a lot of homebrewing and I've got an amazing number of folks who are into that scene," says John Sterm, a young attorney grabbing food at a Korean food cart. Sterm moved to Portland from Oklahoma.
"Biking to work and knowing that so many of my friends and peers are in that community and that culture is great," he adds.
... While Portland companies have a great pool of talent to draw on, it's not a diverse pool. Portland is still about 80 percent white.
Needless to say, the article doesn't mention any research on the downsides of diversity (it has become a sacralized idea like those Jon Haidt mentioned in his address).
ReplyDeleteA Smart Solution to the Diversity Dilemma
Not identifying myself because I have no interest in being hounded for this, but yeah - its relative homogeneity is one of the reasons I moved to Portland.
ReplyDeleteI like living in a high trust community. I miss some of the good ethnic cuisine restaurants of Southern California, but that and the weather is about it.
Gee, let's see....ummmm, ummmm, diversity, diversity....well, doesn't Portland have more teen runaways than any city other than NYC?
ReplyDeleteDoesn't that qualify? True, maybe not too many brown or black-skinned among those troubled youth, but you can't have everything, after all.
Maybe all those cool whites who ride bikes can help those kids, you know? Shower them with tolerance and tax dollars to fix them right up.
Awesome, so how about this. Steve Sailer and his white nationalist readers can all migrate to Portland. We'll get the 20% non-whites there to all agree to leave. From then on, Portland can become the white nationalist Utopia in America. Everyone else will agree that Portland should be 100% white. And finally, Steve Sailer will stop whining like a little bitch over and over and over again. He might even go back to working a normal job and doing something productive for society. Imagine that!
ReplyDelete***Steve Sailer will stop whining***
ReplyDeleteYan Shen,
Did you read the Portland article? The tone of it appears to be that there is something wrong with Portland, or its inhabitants, for its lack of diversity. That is quite insulting for a number of reasons and I don't see a problem with Steve mentioning it.
I know some people who live there.
ReplyDeleteI would venture to say that the lack of diversity appeals to them but that they would be loathe to say so.
That said, it's a smaller city but just big enough that it has some of the big city virtues. I imagine it's like the worlds best college town, which would make it massively appealing for a lot of SWPL's.
I've been through Portland many times. It's a super SWPL city. In Portland, even the inner city youth are white. Big Brother Seattle is almost as white and just as SWPL. To the extent that Seattle is a little bit less white than Portland, it's because of another SWPLish minority - Asians.
ReplyDeleteThe Dream of the '90s is alive in Portland.
ReplyDeleteanon; you'd regret that pretty quickly ... anyway, yes please
ReplyDeleteWell, combining together the last couple of posts, I think the general Seattle/Portland region is one of the whitest areas in America, and considered a pretty desirable place to live. But the Silicon Valley/SF Bay region is one of the least-white areas in America, and also considered a pretty desirable place to live.
ReplyDeleteIt's nice to have a really big country where lots of different people can live in different places for all sorts of different reasons...
"Big Brother Seattle is almost as white and just as SWPL."
ReplyDeleteYeah, but too gay.
Seattle is 12.9 percent gay and 2/3 white.
ReplyDeletehttp://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2003432940_gays16m.html
I think other cities likely have plenty of gays too, but NAM gays are in the closet. White gays are more in the open.
SF/SV has a large proportion of Asians (primarily Chinese and Indian) and elite immigrants. They make the region a nice place to live in, but there is a strong sense of foreigness down there. Seattle and Portland at least feel like American cities. That may not matter to everyone, but I'd guess a lot of the conservatives here would care.
For a middle to upper class family, PNW (Seattle and Portland) and SF are the best urban areas of the country to live in. Expensive, but worth it.
For a family looking to live in the non-urban suburbs or exurbs, PNW and SF are a good choice as well, but there are a lot of other options too. Many of those options are more afforable too. Of course more affordable areas get stampeded in by NAMs and immigrants, so maybe it's not always a good idea to choose suburban Atlanta or Dallas.
The cable channel IFC has a new series called "Portlandia" that appears to be a cross between a send up and documentary of SWPL types there (eg lesbian bookstore, hippie coffee shop, rapid cyclist bigot).
ReplyDeleteIt's not that funny because the ludicrous self-righteous SWPL types depicted are leave little room for creative parody.
The SWPL characters are immediately dislikable as a humorless, misanthropic and intolerant lot much like their Puritan ancestors.
One would have to a very refined sense of SWLP hipness to like Portlandia.
The lack of diversity in Portland is an absolute disgrace!

It would be good for articles like this to specify which Portland. There are people living in Maine, you know, and Maine isn't that diverse, either. And Portland, Maine, is the largest city in the state. It's not like Detroit, Rome, or Naples, towns that are too small for anyone to think that someone is referring to them.
ReplyDelete"From then on, Portland can become the white nationalist Utopia in America. Everyone else will agree that Portland should be 100% white."
ReplyDeleteI don't know what you're bitching about, but some of us wonder why we can't just be left alone. Other races come here and claim their turf.
I will never forget the neighborhood I grew up in. There was a softball field in the area where neighbors congregated. Then they wiped that out and put in Section 8 housing. You know the rest. Has happened in every city that has, well, the kind of people who want Section 8 housing. It is doom and ruin. And it never happens in the upper middle class neighborhoods, at least not then. Only perfectly safe, good white working class neighborhoods. A couple years after the "Section 8" housing, I was nearly raped and murdered one night on the very corner I had traveled unmolested for the 18 years of my life. Until the neighborhood "change." Three white men happened to be out on their porch (strange luck because it was raining.) They were firemen and an off-duty marine. They chased the blacks away. Sometimes life is that simple. If they made a movie out of it, of course my saviors would have been black.
History Hinders Diversification Of Portland
ReplyDeletethe unquestioning title of this story shows that social engineering is a goal of our elite - a goal that has never proven to have any tangible benefits beyond lots of neat resturuants, and plenty of downsides.. is the downside ever even contemplated? When it's not it's a good sign you're dealing with zealots or people with ulterior agendas.
PS NPR has a history of pruning comments that question stories like this - if your comment gets posted, check back in a couple of days there is a good chance it will be gone.
ReplyDeleteThe very title of this 'story' clearly implies an agenda. Who is trying to 'diversify' portland and why? What's wrong with it the way it is? Who decided there were 'too many' whites and that this is a bad thing?
ReplyDeleteI guess we now know the reason for the curious re-settlment of Somalis in overwhelmingly white northern cold climate states- blatant social engineering.
Has ANYONE proven that diversity is actually good? How has it effected Europe? Positively? The rape rate in Oslo now exceeds New York. once peaceful scandivian cities are now no go zones for police and native born scandinavians.
The leaders of four major European countries have stated multiculturalism is a failure.. when is NPR goign to stop agenda-reporting and examine the downside of this issue?
Awesome, so how about this. Steve Sailer and his white nationalist readers can all migrate to Portland.
ReplyDeleteHow about all the NAM's from elsewhere move to Seattle/Portland so they too can enjoy the benefits of diversity.
It seems to me that Portland's diversity crisis could be solved if the City Council would deputize Christian Lander to confer honorary NAM status on selected individuals. The Council would decree that these designations would be binding for Census and public-radio purposes.
ReplyDeleteEconomists could be employed to determine the Pareto-optimal number of certificates to issue; these high-status items would be distributed by auction, to swell the city's coffers.
Everybody wins.
Did you read the Portland article? The tone of it appears to be that there is something wrong with Portland, or its inhabitants, for its lack of diversity.
ReplyDeleteWhich, if true, means there's REALLY something wrong with China. 1.3 BILLION worth of non-diverseness.
Makes me sick just thinking about it. Something must be done...
I spent some time in Portland recently, and while the city itself is pretty White, the suburbs are definitely not so. Beaverton is VERY non-White. There seemed to be a lot of recent immigrants from Mexico, Asia (especially Vietnam), and the Middle East there. I doubt Portland itself will stay White for long.
ReplyDeleteSteve wouldn't move to Portland; it rains there.
ReplyDeleteRemember the popular HBD credo:
"Dude, good weather beats white neighbors any day of the week!"
Strange non sequitor. Portland is quickly becoming, per capita, the basketball recruitment capital of the world. Even with the tiny black population, there are probably more great black (and also white) college and pro basketball players (per population) coming from Portland than anywhere else right now:

I hope no government officials stumble over this article. Portland might then get targeted for resettlement of section eight dwellers from elsewhere in the country, or perhaps the next few waves of Somali and Congo refugees might be assigned there. The diversity commissars are always on the lookout, you know. And don't forget the pinheads who destroy things from within, the ones who are divorced from reality after living exclusively in white areas and decide to play missionary by bringing their pet diversity projects into their midst.
ReplyDeleteUgh. I spent a weekend in Portland, OR one afternoon. Instantly loathed the place. Physically beautiful but you could smell the stench of modern liberalism in the air.
ReplyDeleteWay too planned out, nothing messy and organic in the true, not coopted, sense of that word. Smug, self-satified. In short typically and stereotypically SWPL.
If I had more time, I'd tell you how I really feel about it.
I live in the Portland area and can tell you that it is big time SWPL. This is why the young people move here. They used to move to Seattle. But Seattle got too big and became too expensive as well.
ReplyDeleteThe lack of "diversity" is actually one of the reasons why people relocate here, even though they will never admit it. The biggest non-white ethnic group are Asians. I actually live in a neighborhood that is about 25% Asian.
The Seattle area has a significant African-American population, even though it is not talked about much. Tacoma, south of Seattle, is also an African-American community. However, the rest of the Seattle area is a mixture of whites and various East and South-east Asians.
Culturally, the Pacific Northwest is divided by the Cascade mountain range. West is the the rainy side with the stereotypical PNW culture with the SWPL's and rainy forests. The east side is totally different. It is very white (not SWPL at all) and is politically conservative. It is also very attractive for white people with kids to move to the eastern side of Pacific North west (Spokane, coeur D'Alene, Boise Idaho) and these areas are considered family-friendly.
There may be a lack of diversity, but rest assured that young Asian women are quite welcome in Portland.
ReplyDelete"It's nice to have a really big country where lots of different people can live in different places for all sorts of different reasons..."
ReplyDeleteIt sure is. It'd be even nicer of the government and the rest of the social engineers would butt out and let those people decide where and how they want to live.
My sister has lived in Portland for about 20 years. When I first visited her there one of the characteristics of the city that I noted was the extent of it well-kept middle and upper-middle class neighborhoods. This was in sharp contrast to the midwestern city near which I live, where the residential areas are typically run-down, and the more affluent people live in suburbs. House prices (at least before 2008) were also high there relative to houses of similar age and square footage in my part of the country.
ReplyDeleteWhen I commented on these phenomena to my sister, she attributed them to Oregon's strict zoning laws, which discourage suburban development of the kind so common elsewhere in the U.S. I then pointed out that it didn't seem like Portland had much black population, and that there was no big black slum as there is in many cities of comparable size. If it did have, those zoning laws would quickly be abolished and suburbs based on "white flight" would arise just as they have where I live.
Oregon is a peculiar state. Portland is very socially liberal, while the rest of the state is not. The state's rural conservatives have succeeded in keeping welfare benefits low in Oregon, so a large lumpenprole population has not flocked there. Because of this, white people in Portland can afford to be liberal - they do not have to live with the consequences of their politics.
Whites are lazier in Portland because they can be. It's one of the few places were living in a city and not being very rich is not an invitation to get beaten, robbed, raped and killed by the indigenous urban population.
ReplyDeleteLots of white people would like to live in cities if they were safer and less unpleasant.
If Portland whites were replaced with more pronatalist whites, the birthrate would be pretty high. Having a yard is nice. On the other hand, by living close to work job parents would have a couple hours extra hours a day to take the kids to safe parks.
A city 80% white!!! Oh the horror!! The horror!!! This just won't do! We must rush ethnics and foreigners in there at once to dilute them!!
ReplyDeleteTry and imagine anybody complaining about the city of Atlanta being 80% black? It's only a bad thing when its white people...
"There may be a lack of diversity, but rest assured that young Asian women are quite welcome in Portland."
ReplyDeleteAs a beta white male I agree. I have trouble landing a white woman, but I've found greater success with Asian women, because they generally tend to have lower standards than white women when it comes to mates. I urge all my fellow beta white males to seek an Asian woman rather than to die all alone. There's no shame in settling or marrying out of your race if you're a beta white male.
Truthie, sport, have you checked out an NBA game lately? Lots of empty seats down near the court. I wonder if people are starting to cotton that basketball doesn't matter, or that it's just boring. Also, why do the bruthas seem so enthusiastic about hitting the Euros in the back of the head? Must be all that cracker attitude the Croations and Latvians display, eh?
ReplyDeleteI think it is not 'dangerously white' but 'hideously white, which was used by Greg Dyke who was head of the BBC at the time. He used it while being interviewed on of the BBC's many ethnic radio stations.
ReplyDeleteThe phrase ' unhealthily white' was used by an academic to describe a too white area of an english town, cannot remember which one though.

"There's no shame in settling or marrying out of your race if you're a beta white male."
ReplyDeleteNo, only if you're an attractive white female.
"Truthie, sport, have you checked out an NBA game lately? Lots of empty seats down near the court."
ReplyDeleteThe economy is bad, last I heard.

What sport does matter?
Also, why do the bruthas seem so enthusiastic about hitting the Euros in the back of the head?
"The Bruvas" seem to hit each other in the back of the head also.
Must be all that cracker attitude the Croations and Latvians display, eh?
If it's so boring, how do you know about the "Croations" and Latvians?
I wouldn't say Seattle has a large black population. It's only 8.5 percent black and the King County population is about 6.5 percent black. Portland is only slightly less black than Seattle, but does seem to have more Hispanics. Seattle's biggest minority are definitely Asians, which Portland has much fewer of.
ReplyDeleteBlacks are concentrated in many of the south Seattle neighborhoods and also some of the south King County suburbs (Renton, Kent, Seatac, Tukwila). Even there, they still don't really predominate. Latinos have yet to penetrate in large numbers in Seattle, are present.
Of the 11 Seattle high schools, whites are a solid majority (60 percent plus) in 3. Whites and Asians are a majority in 8 of the 11. Of the 3 majority NAM schools, all are in the southern section of Seattle. 2 of the 3 NAM schools are actually pretty small (enrollment under 700) and all 3 NAM high schools are under 1000 enrollment. Latinos are present in decent numbers in the Seattle schools, but not neccesssarily in very large numbers.
Rather than call Seattle a "white" city, I'd say white/Asian is a more accurate description. Though obviously very tilted towards white.
It's accurate to say that Western Washington (includes Seattle and King County) are soft lefty, but eastern Washington tends to be more rural and conservative. However, the population center is the Seattle metro, that tilts the state blue.
Seattle is family friendly too, but Spokane is much more affordable. Spokane tends to be pretty conservative.
Seattle is a good place to live, but the biggest drawback is the weather. It rains so freakin much in this city. The traffic is bearable, but a problem too. So are the moderately (not SF though) elevated housing prices. The positive side is that this seems to keep out the riff raff.... who seem to flock to warm weather, highly affordable metros like Las Vegas, Dallas, and Atlanta.
"The phrase ' unhealthily white' was used by an academic to describe a too white area of an english town, cannot remember which one though"
ReplyDeleteThough I'd wager it wasn't the part of town where he lived.
"It seems to me that Portland's diversity crisis could be solved if the City Council would deputize Christian Lander to confer honorary NAM status on selected individuals. The Council would decree that these designations would be binding for Census and public-radio purposes.

That's the funniest comment I've read on this site in a long time.
The problem with a place like Portland is that NAMS will show up there (along with Asian immigrants and so on). Attracted by the ability to AA-ify wealth and positions and power out of the majority White population.
ReplyDeleteAfter all, an 80% White population makes it ripe for AA-based defenestration of elected officials, appointed ones, privately employed managers, and so on. While White Flight is a useful tool (and one reminiscent of border-derived people not Puritan/Progressives) it inevitably morphs into White fight when there is no easy place to move to.
Also, note that the people moving there are mostly Puritan/Progressive stock, a deep belief in a "ordered liberty" where harmony is kept by the government passing laws detailing every bit of personal life. Something that White women (see: Prohibition and the temperance movement) find appealing also.
Another one of those places where people can run us down us hicks who live in majority black towns in the South from a safe distance.
ReplyDelete"They chased the blacks away. Sometimes life is that simple. If they made a movie out of it, of course my saviors would have been black."
ReplyDeleteYour description of the sec 8 housing only affecting working class white communities is right on. This is what has happened to my town, and this is why I am getting a gun. Funny, I once once a lib.
Many of my women friends have them while others think
"As a beta white male I agree. I have trouble landing a white woman, but I've found greater success with Asian women, because they generally tend to have lower standards than white women when it comes to mates."
ReplyDeleteI'd disagree. I'd say it's more a case of the second-rate Asian women going for white guys, because they're spurned by high-status Asian males. Funnily enough, Asian-fetishist white guys rarely work out that they're courting the duds and rejects.
Didn't Chicago tear down Cabrini-Green housing projects and send the people to the surrounding suburbs? How'd that work out?
ReplyDeleteregarding the 'too white' comment here is the link:

Professor Ted Cantle, who wrote the report on the 2001 riots in Bradford and Oldham, suggested people from ethnic minorities in some parts of the Midlands might not feel “safe and secure” living near predominantly white communities.
Cantle, who has chaired a panel advising ministers on implementing the recommendations of his report, made the remarks in an interview about multiculturalism with a local newspaper last week.
In an apparent reference to Heanor, a predominantly white town in the Amber Valley area of Derbyshire, Cantle said he was concerned about the strength of support for the far-right British National party in some parts of the East Midlands.
He said: “If I was working in Nottingham, I’d be talking to black and ethnic minority communities about how free they feel to exercise choice over where they live, in particular where they feel safe and secure.
“Some of the neighbouring areas of Notts and Derbyshire do seem to be unhealthily all-white. There is some evidence to show they are hostile to black and ethnic minorities.”
Seattle is a horrendous place to live, if you want urban amenities. Portland is a small city but it's got real urban life. The only thing real urban about Seattle is the traffic.
ReplyDelete"...a deep belief in a 'ordered liberty' where harmony is kept by the government passing laws detailing every bit of personal life. Something that White women (see: Prohibition and the temperance movement) find appealing also."
ReplyDeleteUgh, not this white woman. Bad enough that women boss people around in their homes, families, etc. I say leave the business of government to men.
The greatly increased presence and visibility of women in public life during my lifetime corresponds to a greatly decreased harmony (and just plain old civility) in daily life.
I would venture to say that the lack of diversity appeals to them but that they would be loathe to say so.
ReplyDeleteThat's liberals for you. Always with the hand-wringing about "diversity", but as soon as the first black kid shows up a the local public school little Brandon is off to private school.

Is this the same guy who posts all these other angry anti-white, pro-Asian messages?
Portland? I thought you meant Poland!
ReplyDeleteYou should've said,"Where young white liberals go to retire..."
ReplyDeleteI grew up in Orange County, CA. It was a wonderful experience -- I loved it! It is where I lived until age 40. Unfortunately, I had realized since the '90's that it was not a tenable home for the next generation to grow up. My wife and I moved to the PNW 3 years ago (where she is from) because I'll be damned if my American children (oldest now in 1st grade) were going to grow up Mexicans.
ReplyDeleteYes, Portland is a nauseating phony white-guilt liberal hypocrisy, but we live in a nearby suburb with "good schools" and it is beyond awesome. Our neighborhood feels like America; like the America I grew up with back in the halcyon 70's & 80's in the OC. It literally brings tears to my eyes; like seeing a dearly loved one you once thought dead, alive again.
"Didn't Chicago tear down Cabrini-Green housing projects and send the people to the surrounding suburbs? How'd that work out?"
ReplyDeletePretty well. That area has become quite gentrified along with much of the north, near west, and near south sides. You see a lot more white children in the city than you did 20 yeara ago.

ReplyDeleteWhat about a white Latina?
"JSM, fat white chicks seem more interested in a T-rich brother than a beta cracker."
ReplyDeletePossibly, for at two months. I am still not sure what this "brother" (since when did blacks co-opt that fraternal term for themselves?) is offering other than sex, and we all know how long that holds up. The few rich (not many of them) who actually commit to any sort of legal arrangement are freakishly rare. It's not really the social movement you think it is; it's a small minority of goofy, brainwashed females, the great majority of whom regret their association later on. Seen it.

Well, you could have moved to Irvine, better than Portland but more expensive and more Asian. Mission Viejo is still pretty white. I think Orange County is going to go more asian past 2025 than Hispanic since its expensive- Santa Ana and Anaheim the Mexican cities have more kids but their children are moving to the Inland. Empire or states like Texas. OC might now be 35 percent hispanic and maybe now 17 percent asian. Irvine is the only growing city there and it appeals to asians not hispanics.
ReplyDeletesome of the comments on the npr article are a hoot get this one:
ReplyDeletehe concept of race is a socially-contrived illusion and to speak of it as a biological reality is, in fact, to express ignorance and racism (investigate the biology of race if this doesn't makes sense). It generally only serves to justify fear and hatred and ideas that there are white or black interests or that the value of racial diversity is "anti-white" is racist nonsense that does just that.
We can expect healthy and just societies to be racially diverse because race ultimately implies nothing in regard to interests or abilities. It is only historical legacies and enduring individual and institutional prejudices that limit racial diversity, as is the case in Portland. In other words, we really do have a problem if we lack racial diversity. Of course, allowing racial diversity to increase implies the loss of historical privileges enjoyed by some, including de facto segregation, but that’s a good thing if we value freedom.
