The New York Times now has a remarkable interactive set of maps of 2010 Census data regarding ethnicity that scales from the whole country down to Census tracts of a few thousand people.
For example, in the Valley Glen neighborhood in the center of the San Fernando Valley, I was struck a few years ago by the unbelievably elaborate security fences with lethal finials that were being built around typical little SFV post-War tract houses. How can Mexicans afford them, I wondered. On a second visit, it dawned on me that the people turning their homes into fortified bunkers weren't mostly Mexican, they were Armenians and / or other newcomers, newly arrived from the ex-Soviet Union or West Asia. Sure enough, you can see on the highest resolution map that, say, Census tract 123304 has seen its white population increase by 77% over the last ten years, while its Hispanic population fell by 1 percent. The classiness of the get-away cars in Valley Glen gang shootings has increased correspondingly over the last decade, with Beemers and Lexi now favored.
By hitting View More Maps, you can see each map in 12 different flavors of information conveyed.
Arming Armenians. Are they generous too? Arms and alms make a good pair.
ReplyDeleteI recall reading that about 10 percent of the rioters arrested during the LA Rodney King inferno were white. Not a very high percentage, but I don't recall seeing a single caucasian (other than cops) shown in south-central LA during the conflagration.
ReplyDeleteThen I realized....... Lots of Armenians, Russians, Persians, Arabs, and former Soviet ethnics down there. Phenotypically and culturally, not white.... but the government census puts them in that category.
In Russia, oligarchs live under security fences. Personally I think it's swell that these vibrant immigrants have brough their vibrant post-USSR traditions to our our country. If not for them and the Mexicans, it'd be just a bunch of boring old white guys. Then where would the city be?
ReplyDeletePlaying around on your maps, I found Jefferson County,Mississippi to be the county with the highest % black in the US (estimated at 85%). I looked up info on the web about it and found that, lo and behold, it has the highest obesity rate in the US, one of the lowest per capita incomes in the US ($9709), one of the highest bank card delinquency rates (6.21%) and a mass migration rate away from the city. What are the odds of that?
ReplyDeleteI was wondering what I was going to do this weekend, and now I know. Thanks for the link, Steve. I've already wasted an hour scrutinizing my own census tract and finding some surprises. I would never have guessed that we're 9% black. I see whites and Asians but hardly any black people here. Where are they all?
ReplyDeleteGreat, great link.
These maps point out why the Global Warming Scare is so unscary.
ReplyDeletePeople have been leaving the cold parts of the country like Montana and relocating in Florida.
Carbon Dioxide in the atmosphere is definitely increasing even if its effect on temperature is less certain. Assuming for the sake of argument that the world does warm up a bit that would seem to suit Americans just fine.

The Census confirms The White House is much blacker.
ReplyDeleteWhat's odd: It housed 19 people under Clinton in 2000, but houses 33 now. Why so many more?
33 people, minus the B.H.Obama family, leaves 29 others. All domestic servants? Who needs that many servants?
Clinton: 17 servants.
B.H.Obama: 29 servants! (21 black, 7 white, 1 Other).
Is there some other explanation here, or is the B.H.Obama family really so dependent upon servants?
Has the Census Bureau published the specific statistics on nationalities of the "others" anywhere?
ReplyDeleteThen I realized....... Lots of Armenians, Russians, Persians, Arabs, and former Soviet ethnics down there. Phenotypically and culturally, not white.... but the government census puts them in that category.
ReplyDeleteDon't forget mestizos.
Seems like a good thread to ask a couple questions:
How many federal government employees are there in the US?
How many state?
Local?
What are the demographics?
How many people are on welfare in the US, citizens and non-citizens included? More detail is better ("welfare" is a nebulous term).
What are the demographics?
Just wondering about the government tit as a whole, how many are on it, and their demographics.
The Census confirms The White House is much blacker.
ReplyDeleteLOL!

ReplyDeleteFunny, I watched Diary of the Dead recently and there was a WASPy-douche-who-can't-handle-harsh-reality stereotype front and center. He had a manor and referred to "the staff." Who has that kind of "the staff" any more?
What century are some of these psychos living in?
Clinton: 17 servants.
B.H.Obama: 29 servants! (21 black, 7 white, 1 Other).
Is there some other explanation here, or is the B.H.Obama family really so dependent upon servants?
The population of Rikers Island (the whole island is a prison) is 7% white, 56% black, 34% Hispanic, 0% Asian, 2% other.
ReplyDeleteThere was a report in the Washington Post recently, talking about how the county has become majority nonwhite, mainly due to immigration. Of course, a lot of the nonwhites here are East and South Asians, who tend to add little to crime and dependency and lots to schools and the economy. But the big influx was hispanics, folks from El Salvador and Guatemala and Mexico.
ReplyDeleteI'm not concerned with race in the same way as a lot of commenters here. But these demographic shifts are enormously important, and they deserve a lot more attention than they get.
I suppose they don't get much, because it's kind-of unsavory to show too much interest in racial demographics or numbers of immigrants--it's not quite an admission of crimethink, but it certainly raises the suspicion. The bigger demographic picture represents a huge change in what our country will look like in 50 years, one that we're entering into with almost no public discussion at all. This is one place where the overlap between PC and our remarkably lame and intellectually lazy mass media are seriously screwing us.

ReplyDeleteIt's also the capital for out of state lawyers to file class-action lawsuits on stuff like cigarettes and asbestos, which give them the tile of the "Jackpot Justice" capital.
I woud like to see maps like this going back to 1900 and then compare the changes.

"The county"? Which county?
I also don't know why this would be a shock. Probably 40% of the counties in Metropolitan-USA are majority-nonwhite (incl. suburbs).
