A request

Benjamin Franklin said you get people to like you by asking them to do you a favor. So, here's a request. I'm looking for an autobiographical article written by playwright Tom Stoppard that appeared in the first issue of Tina Brown's now long defunct magazine Talk in September 1999. It began on p. 190. (Did magazines used to have 190 pages? Wow.) It was reprinted in the UK in the Sunday Telegraph Magazine on October 10, 1999, pp 14-21.

I want to write another essay about Stoppard, and this is the key piece of the puzzle.

I don't think it's readily available online.

Well, if you search here it seems you can buy a copy of the newspaper for (a pretty stiff) 60 GBP.

  2. Thanks for that demo Steve.

  3. Aren't you an alum of an LA area college? You would probably have free alumni borrowing privileges, and they could certainly get you the Telegraph from 1999 in some fashion. Probably a database restricted to library members. Alternately many colleges will let outsiders pay for library access -- I pay $200 a year at a local college, $200-$300 a year would be typical.

  4. You can buy the Talk Magazine premier issue on eBay. The auction ends May 15. The Stoppard memoir is mentioned on the magazine cover:

  5. Another option is that you could buy the September 1999 issue of Talk Magazine on Ebay for $9.56.

Since you don't seem to have a real job, Sailer, most of us think you should do your own research.

  7. It's 5 pounds on eBay.

  8. Stoppard was a beta. Women were repelled by him. Why bother?

  10. The best answer I saw for a source to that article was going to your local library or university and asking for an interlibrary loan.

I'd ask you to do me a favor but it has to do with the preceding entry and that would mess with your authorial integrity. Besides, I'm too old and cranky to care about being liked.

  11. LAPL has it downtown. Reference-- so you'll have to go to it, I believe.

  12. P.S. Steve: It'd be wise not to post my previous comment that refers to the eBay auction for the issue of Talk Magazine you asked about. You don't want to make more competition for yourself if you decide to bid on it. If my comment doesn't get posted, I'll know you read it.

  13. Nah, according to another commenter's response to your previous post, if I do you a favor, you will just resent me. That might trigger Komment Kontrol at come latter date.

So, try bing or google. If you can't find those web sites, just google for them (oh, wait ...)

P.S. I don't feel like I like you any more. So, it's like Ben Franklin said. I like you about the same amount, as before you asked for the favor. I like your political views; you are very interesting when writing on politics, but naive about science, engineering, and technology.

  14. Check with the Agoura Hills Library or the Mayme Dear Library in Gardena for back issues of Talk

  15. You can fly round trip to London from LAX for $651 if your dates are flexible.

It's Spring across the Pond, my friend, and if it's for research, you can deduct most of it.

  17. If you can wait ~1.5 weeks I could get a pdf of it for you.

  18. Lots of magazines used to keep a running page count, ie issue 2 would start on page (last page of the first issue + 1)

I think some academic journals or literary journals still do this

  19. Another thing that annoys me is when you ask a question, a simple straightforward question, with a yes or no answer, and people write in with things other than the answer. Since I am on a streak of writing annoying comments, I decided to try to leave this one.

I would gladly give you a .pdf next Tuesday for a .txt file today.

(where did that deal above come from? Someone please give me the background on that ... you know ... as, like, a favor or something.)

Damn straight. It annoys me to no end when people do that!

What was the original question, again?

Oh, also, was this the post, Mr. Caplan, that you didn't want Steve to read, or was it a previous one that he indeed deleted?

See, we all can be annoying, if we give it some effort. With another 10,000 hours of this effort, I could be as annoying as Mr. Truth.

  22. I have it in my garage, somewhere. I went through a phase of buying the first ish of any new mag that came out, and that's one I got and kept, mostly because of a really well written 'life in a trailer park' story. Is the Tom Stoppard story the one where he writes about his parents, and his aunt telling him that he's Jewish? I'll see if I can find it, but it's probably faster to buy it on ebay.

  23. Is that Whiskey comment genuine? I used to think that some of the more out-there comments in his name were caricatures of his comments posted in his name by people meaning to mock him but the last time he inserted his wacked out misogny into some thread that had Zero to do with the subject - like here - forty more posters engaged with him. Approvingly.

Also, anyone notice a few days ago when he assured us REPEATEDLY that Obama would turn the Seals over to The Hague post haste? What the hell is wrong with that guy?

Still, I wouldn't recommend censoring him. He means well and, in his own totally fucked up way, means well. Also, as a son of Abraham, I have a soft spot for Scots-Irish istevers who don't want me deported. That's a bias I have to live with.

"Truth" though is just a plain old troll and should be banned. He used to actually say something or other every so often but he's since decided that he'd rather just toss bombs and nowadays that's all he does. Read his comments over the past few months, he never engages at all, he just throws insults around for the heck of it. I think it's only proper that if he's gonna be that way he be disallowed in here. (And I say this as someone who agreed with much of what he had to say back when he said it, by the way.)
