The blond kid who was photographed stuffing a rag into the gas tank of a police cruiser at the Vancouver defeat riot has supposedly been identified: a high school athlete who is on Canada's national Under 18 water polo team, son of a doctor. Cops tend to be persnickety about you trying to blow up their cars, so this doesn't bode well for his previously promising career.
The point of a riot is to enjoy the license allowed by the anonymity of the crowd, but that conflicts with the modern young person's urge to photographically document every single moment of socializing and put it on his or her Permanent Record.
Also, this guy's mom is probably giving him a hard time right now:

The world's best organized riots are in South Korea:
The rioters all get issued color-coded two meter cop-whacking sticks. And there are vast numbers of riot police in South Korea because they are conscripts. Unlike other countries, where the first priority of the riot police is to prevent a riot from breaking out and the second priority is to quell rioting, in South Korea the riot police are there to Do Battle. A good time, apparently, is had by all.
I just found out about the loss of a dear friend through Facebook. I've been looking through her photos and reading the comments she put there about her trip to England, etc. When I went to Bob Dylan's FB page, I saw that she "liked" him too. Facebooks captures many moments.
ReplyDeleteWhites and Asians have a lot of pent-up frustration. This guy is my favorite.
ReplyDeleteThat's a bummer.
ReplyDeleteRioting, protesting, lighting a police cruiser on fire... seems as though the young see this as their rightful due.
You can't blame them for having a little fun.
I'm old enough now to feel very self conscious about crossing the line into attention-whoredom. I often delete updates shortly after posting..I mean, who cares. I notice most my circumspect friends rarely post either.
ReplyDeleteThen there are those few whose lives are just so fabulous, you know..
The cops are persnickety about being caught in their own rioting and law breaking, too. Since cops go about vandalizing, terrorizing, assaulting, and rioting as much as any other violent gang, they're more sensitive than middle class kids about cameras.
ReplyDeleteAnd that's why it's more and more illegal to videotape the police.
Seriously, what the frog is wrong with a kid like that?
ReplyDeleteThere's a riot goin' on, so you get a little crazy, maybe do a little vandalism or steal something, but deliberately torching a police car?
This kid deserves to have his future ruined. His parents should be ashamed at the spoiled monster they created. What a rotten little punk.
"This guy is my favorite."
ReplyDeleteMe, too.
Strike me as another one who has no sympathy for the punk. He had to have been raised better than this (and if he wasn't, then nuts to him).
ReplyDeleteFrankly, most of the pictures I saw made me wish I were there with a bean-bag gun or a water cannon.

ReplyDeleteThat's EVERYONE's favorite guy.
Best thing is that there's no proof that he broke the window, so he'll most likely get off scot-free.
Facebook is absolutely crack for people. If a few years of observing friends wasn't enough to prove that, we recently blocked it at work...
ReplyDeleteFacebook simply feminizes men and turns women into quivernig blobs of jell-o.
Maybe he could write his college admissions essay on "What I Did at the Hockey Riot" and include this photo.
ReplyDeleteI caught that (obviously staged) photo of the Canuck superfan yesterday at "Disgrasian," a confusing Jezebel knock-off w/ self-effacing(?) ethnocentric twist. The guy's facial expression is so great that I hope he finds time to parachute into more disaster zones, Amanpour-like, wielding his DayGlo-accented hockey stick.
ReplyDeleteYou could Photoshop him into other scenes of disaster, like the the Zeppelin catching fire in 1937 or a Matthew Brady picture of dead bodies at Gettysburg.
ReplyDeleteNo proof he broke the window?

There's a riot goin' on, so you get a little crazy, maybe do a little vandalism or steal something, but deliberately torching a police car?
ReplyDeleteVancouver cops very zealously enforce all of our city's draconian sin bylaws. They use ATV's, horses, undercover cops, and motorboats to catch people smoking or having a beer the beach. Speed traps and cell phone/seatbelt traps are everywhere too. I don't blame people for attacking them one bit.
"The cops are persnickety about being caught in their own rioting and law breaking, too. Since cops go about vandalizing, terrorizing, assaulting, and rioting as much as any other violent gang, they're more sensitive than middle class kids about cameras.

Yeah, but if the cops are too heavy handed, the White House will start identifying bombing targets in Ottawa.

Got no idea how it fits in, but there were some ludicrous pix today from Royal Ascot--think Upper-Class Twit of the Year meets "Made in Britain." Nut graf: "In a blatant disregard for Ascot’s strict behavioural code, a drunken brawl broke out by a Victorian band stand"

This HBD stuff can get a little complicated
Since riots are here to stay, maybe what we need is a Bill of Riots. Rules on how, where, and when to riot.
ReplyDeleteThe best solution for this problem. Find out who did what. Then send cops to the kid's house and have them loot it and burn it to the ground.
ReplyDelete"Whites and Asians have a lot of pent-up frustration. This guy is my favorite."

"I don't blame people for attacking them one bit."
ReplyDeleteReally, torching a police car?
OK champ. Good luck with THAT attitude.
How many of these kids are 'radicals' and how many are beerheads? We see this stuff at every G20 meeting. Whole bunch of white kids--from reasonably privileged or well-to-do backgrounds--get together, shout slogans, and have some reason to smash windows, fight cops, burn cars, throw things, scream and bitch about everything, and etc. There was a huge mess in Seattle about 10 yrs ago.
ReplyDeleteAnd most of the rioters in Paris in May 68 were white middle class kids.
Some of these kids would probably join in a 'radical' protest if G20 meeting were held in Vancouver.
How sincere are they politically or are they just looking for some 'moral excuse' to riot and party?
One explanation is simple enough. Young men are most stupid and violent and out of control. With alcohol, strength in numbers, and hormones pumped by sports games, some are bound to act like this.
But how many are acting out 'politically'? How many are acting out a kind of V FOR VENDETTA, MATRIX, BOURNE TRILOGY, or GANGSTA RAP scenario? Though they come from good families, they go to nice colleges and come under the influence of radical professors. Of course, even without those professors/radical ideas, young males are bound to be aggressive, but might not some of those ideas act to justify some of the violence--at least among some guys?
These kids also seem to act this way cuz they know their own private properties are well-protected. They all have a safe home to go to, which is why there should be counter-riots by the police to burn down their suburban neighborhoods and see how much they like it.
In the 1930s, Nazis understood and channeled the energies of youth, directing them toward book-burning, torchlight celebrations, etc. And Mao unleashed this power too in the Cultural Revolution. The youth energy is there as fuel but who and what are setting light to it today?
In some ways, the modern state is growing too powerful, what with PC speech control and nannystatism. But in other ways, it's too weak in cases like this. When kids act in this manner, they should be beaten to a pulp or mowed down with machine guns. I'm serious. 3
When thugs smash windows for fun and nothing happens, what kind of civilization is this? If a Muslim attacked a US army barracks like this in Afghanistan or Iraq, he would be shot. I say shoot these scum. I'll all for freedom and rights, but no one has a right to smash property for no reason. If someone did that to my house, I would take a baseball and smash his brains out.
Everyone bitches about policy brutality but even worse is youth brutality. Drop some napalm next time.
The Chinese kids looks like Harold(and Maude).
ReplyDelete"Strike me as another one who has no sympathy for the punk."
ReplyDeleteSame here. Upper-middle class kids angry at "the man" - blech... Such a tired, unoriginal pose, and yet it still, after all these decades, makes no sense.
Don't cross a Seoul brother - he'll mess you up.
ReplyDeleteSoKo rioting has a long and vernerable history starting before the founding of the country.
Even the extreme brutality, torture, rape, executions and scientific experiments by Colonial Japanese didn't stop Koreans' urge to take it to the street.
During the Rodney King riots while the cops were holding back and whites like Denny Reginold were getting their asses kicked, vastly outnumbered Koreans were defending their inner city groceries with small arms from rooftops.

Actually, in both cases, 90% do it for fun.
The riot police are all former rioters recruited into the military and then placed in the riot police. So it's rioters vs. their old rioting buddies. I don't know why the South Koreans do this, maybe it's to tone down the violence.
ReplyDeleteI just started watching footage of Korean riots on YouTube.
ReplyDeleteWow. At several points you see helmeted guys with shields attack in formation, while letting out a genuine battle cry. That's probably the closest I'll ever come to seeing hoplite warfare. The stuff in costume movies could never come close - this is real. Anyone who's read ancient history has probably wondered how that would have looked.
"I don't know why the South Koreans do this, maybe it's to tone down the violence."
ReplyDeleteDon't overthink it. I'm sure they don't.

total BS. identify and arrest every one of those guys. 2 year prison sentence for all of them.
like another poster in the other thread, i wonder if this kind of stuff can only happen in places like canada where the government has disarmed all it's citizens. what if after the mavericks won the NBA title, there was a riot in dallas? good chance these guys send bullets back instead of punches.
The Asian kid reminds me of that American Idol "sensation" from Cal several years back. Nerdy.
ReplyDeleteWhites used to riot all the time.
ReplyDeleteIf we were a homogeneous country we would have and would be rioting frequently and would have stopped a lot of the negative things that have happened to our nation. The reason that we can't, or don't, or haven't is because the country is so heterogeneous now, and the government has prisons full of black and Hispanic gangs to attack and torture any white male rioters.
Divide and conquer.

nevertheless this riot was clearly a sports riot over ice hockey. there were thousands and thousands of real hockey fans rioting. the canadian authorities are trying to play down this angle but anybody can plainly see that hundreds of people are wearing canucks jerseys.
"I just started watching footage of Korean riots on YouTube."
ReplyDeleteWatching this, it struck me that for any revolution--leftist or rightist--to succeed, it needs to win over the support, enthusiasm, and imagination of young males for obvious reasons.
1. Young males are the most energetic and aggressive. They need some outlet for their excess energy: sport, vandalism, crime, politics.
2. They tend to be single and have lots of free time. Family and work get in the way of revolution.
3. They tend to be impressionable and in search of meaning, identity, purpose, conviction, etc.
4. They tend to be rebellious against established authority.
5. They wanna show off. This Chinese kid in the photo seems to be saying, 'me no longer good son who do get all A's and go nighty nighty to bed at 10 pm. me one badass.' Little boys are into 'look, ma'. Older boys are into 'look, pa'. Young men are into 'look, fellas'. Their self-image depends on how their peers see them.
Look at all the great--though not necessarily good--political movements, revolutions, and violences in the 20th century, and at the core was the energy of young males: Bolshevik revolution with its young intellectuals and disgruntled soldiers; Fascist Revolution in Italy; Nazi revolution with angry WWI soldiers, angry unemployed young men, and college students(who, back then, were mostly on the right since only privileged kids could afford to go to college and professors tended to be nationalistic); Japanese militarism--though not a revolution, there was great pressure for more aggression from young officers; Chinese nationalist and communist revolutions; Vietnamese nationalism and communism; Chinese Cultural Revolution; Algerian Revolution; Cuban revolution; 60s counter-culture, Woodstock, Democratic Convention 68 bash, May 68 in France, Sandinista Revolution; Iranian Revolution, etc.
Of course, there was a cause/ideology/purpose in each of these revolutions, but the people most willing to throw caution to winds and dive into the storm were mostly young males, and a lot of it had to do with biology. Excess hormonal energy in need of some outlet. (Maybe Greeks understood this and used sports to channel some of this anarchic energies. Romans--and later the Anglos--did too. If Roman mobs were busy screaming for blood in the colisseum, maybe they were less likely to call for a revolution. Of course, too much of a good thing can be a bad thing, leading to excess and stupidity. And sports culture in America and Canada often unleash street violence. Otoh, maybe kids who expend their energies this way are less likely to join a revolution. I dunno. Rock n roll sure messed up the radical left in the 60s. In the movie BAADER MEINHOF GANG, the revolutionaries are too much into sex, drugs, and rock n roll to effectively organize and lead. In the end, it wasn't the unruly radicals but the studious radicals who did their homework who took over the colleges.)
Young male energy is crucial to any great social movement, but it can be a minus too. It was excessive craziness of young male street radicals in 68 which led to the Nixon presidency. And the Cultural Revolution in China went out of control, frightening even Mao who'd instigated it. This is why smart revolutionaries--like Bolshies and Nazis--harnessed the young male energy but were also careful to control, guide, and direct it against the enemy and then to suppress and give it form. When the enemy was crushed, the unruly young males had to be told to BEHAVE or else. So, there was the Night of Long Knives where SS attacked SA and killed a whole bunch of street thug elements who were no longer needed. And once Khomeni gained power, he made sure to turn young male energy into a hammer to crush rogue young males who refused to get on with the program. Today, again, most of the social resistance comes from young Iranian males, many without jobs. And 'Arab Spring' is essentially young Arab males gone wild. Too much hormones, not enough freedom and jobs.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure liberals, especially Jews--who are experts in psychology--know about all this and think hard about how to shape, harness, channel, suppress, guide, and direct the energies of young males--white, black, brown, etc. The use of sports, pop music, campus politics, radical politics, etc. is all calibrated to control the most powerful and potent raw energy in society: that of young males.
The left has an advantage in this cuz all the stuff that most excites young males--sports, pop music, loud movies, confrontation politics, etc--are controlled by the left, dominated by gays and liberal Jews or by blacks(in sports and pop music).
There are lots of white males and a lot of white male energy, but there is no cultural, athletic, or political force on the Right to guide and direct it, to amass it into a force.
Also, conservative young males tend to be more responsible. So, they join the military or look for job and girl to settle down with. They are too busy with life for revolution.
The Left, on the other hand, has a lot of artist-radical-intellectual-slacker-etc types who never wanna do anything 'lame and square'. So, they got time to make noise and trouble. And lots of black and brown kids are unemployed too and make lots of noise. And gays just love to be show off and be narcissistic. Stupid maybe, but it gets noitce and attention. Big changes, good or bad, have to happen openly.
Ol' PJ O'Rourke wrote about the excellence of Korean riots years ago. His story about the Korean kid biting his own finger to get some blood to write a slogan on his jacket was classic!
ReplyDeleteI have never, ever, ever wanted to be on Facebook. I just don't get it. Why?
ReplyDelete"His name is Jason Li."
ReplyDeleteThere are a lot of Jason Li's/ Jason Lee's in the world. The media should use three names to identify him, like they do with assassins and serial killers.
Oh, and those Vancouver rioters look pretty green.
ReplyDeleteI doubt these riots were instigated by professional anarchist and trust fundies as the media claims. Just compare your typical G8/Davos anarchist/professional protester with Vancouver rioters.
The G8 type know to hide their identity with a hoodie and kerchief often toting weapons and body padding.
The Vancouver rioters were just wearing hockey jerseys, posing for their facebook pages and looked like they poured out of the nearest bar.
Re: stylized, South Korean riots
ReplyDeleteI got the same impression watching this 'riot' in Seattle. Note the police brutally breaking up the crowd with ... bicycles.
What the hell are people protesting in Seattle anyway--expensive coffee?
He should be Photoshopped into historic pictures of disaster, like the Hindenburg exploding.
ReplyDeleteMy nomination is for something more historically grandiose:
The Rape of the Sabine Women
The Fifth Horseman of the Apocalypse
Perhaps something from the Mughal Conquest of India or a Mongol conquest of a Slavic city that resisted.
So let me get this right.
ReplyDeleteWhen Blacks riot its because of their biology/culture.
When Whites riot its:
"Whites and Asians have a lot of pent-up frustration"
"You can't blame them for having a little fun"
"The cops are persnickety about being caught in their own rioting too"
This HBD stuff can get a little complicated
------------
At least they're not looting, that's the difference.
Among animals, young males rule.
ReplyDeleteCivilization is essentially about controlling young male energy. If completely allowed to run wild and free, you have ghetto culture with Radio Raheems and thugs running the streets.
But if totally suppressed, society becomes dull and stultified. Young males are the most troublesome but also the most fresh, daring, bold, innovative, exciting people around. This is as true in science, tech, arts, and business as in sports. Bill Gates started young. Einstein's great theories were in his younger days. Most great poets reached their greatness young. Though many great artists remain relevant into their late yrs, many attain greatness in youth and then decline. And most superrich guys got began their rise early in life. Gates, Jobs, Zuckerberg, Brin, etc. So, if a society suppresses young male energy too much, there's no progress, which is the lesson of the Muslim, Asian, and traditional world where young males were forced to bow down, conform, and submit to authority. Unless Muslims and Asians break out of this mindset, they won't really come world leaders.
Young males are, by their nature, rebellious and confrontational. They often scoff at 'law and order'. Otoh, they are less established in life and have a long way to climb, even with all their potent energy. So, law and order, which they scoff at, are actually crucial to their success and protection. If a young computer genius comes up with a new program, it's rule-of-law that protects his patent and rights. If a young protester gets dragged to the police station, it's rule-of-law that entitles him to the right of legal counsel and being bailed out and court hearing. So, young males are a funny bunch. They say F-you to Social Order, but they rely on Social Order to make the climb or to enjoy rights when they get in trouble--which is often.
To be sure, as Anne Coulter remarked, not all young people are the same. The likes of Gates and Zuckerberg were bad boys in their own ways, but in constructive smart ways. They prolly didn't go for burning cars and smashing windows. They rebelled intellectually, businessly, and technogeekly. Gates didn't smash the windows of an IBM office building. Instead he smashed the whole company and made his Microsoft the #1 computer company in the world. There's smart rebellion and dumb rebellion. Some go for violence, some learn the violin. Some smash windows, some come up with software called Windows. Some are in-your-face, others design a program called Facebook.
It seems most political systems are designed to control and suppress young male energy. This is true both in a dictatorship and a democracy. In a democracy, more older people vote than younger people. So, even though younger people have more energy, older people elect the politicians who pander to older folks' interests. In a dictatorship, the ruler and military make sure no one, especially young males, get out of line. One way is to recruit young males to serve as goons on the side of Order. Instead of allowing excess young male energy to get out of control, it's shaped and guided to kick ass for the sake of order. In the South Korea riot, we see rebellious young male energy neutralized by state-sponsored young male energy. Make young males beat young males.
But some political orders are created by young people, like the Cuban Revolution. But once they gain power, the young revolutionaries wanna keep it forever. But there's a problem since the revolution was made in the name of youth. With the leaders growing older, won't they lose respect of young people?
But Castro, smart guy that he was, managed to keep the revolution feeling and looking fresh to new generations of Cubans. Was it the Che mythology? Was it Castro's charisma? Was it effective youth organization in Cuba? Was it pride in Cuban sports that kept the young proud in Revolutionary Cuba?
"Also, this guy's mom is probably giving him a hard time right now"
ReplyDeleteSee Mom, THIS is what you'll get next time you take away my PS3 controller for a whole week!
Doesn't Canada have anyone who would've liked to go beat up these bunch of emaciated dorks trying to cheat the status system by only acting out when there's no risk involved?

ReplyDeleteLook, I'm for the guillotine on the banking elite. But I want a REAL REVOLUTION, not some thugfest.
Also, these young punks don't just attack banks. They attack everything. They smash coffee shop windows, overturn and burn cars, hurl stuff and hit people on the head, etc.
I hate evil white collar criminals, and I say kill them, but a society doesn't need banker crooks to go down the tube. Just look at Haiti or Detroit. Detroit isn't run by bankers but by thugs.
Besides, two wrongs don't make a right. And bankers wouldn't have made those crazy loans if idiot freeloading fools had elected liberal and compassionate conservative politicians into office.
If a women's hockey wins or loses, will girls come out and riot?
ReplyDeleteMaybe if Riot becomes the new Right.
Today, women try to be like men in drinking, partying, and acting wild, so maybe there will be feminist riots too.
I heard bra-burning was just an urban myth though.
How many kinds of riots are there?
ReplyDeleteProtest riot.
Rage riot.
Fun riot.
Celebration riot.
Drunk riot.
Party riot.
Things just got out of control riot.
Tea Party drew a lot of people, but many happened to be OLDER white people, so they tended to be orderly. Yet, MSM has been more outraged by them than by violent riots. Weird.
Incidentally, riots would be a lot more entertaining if they piped in some loud music - like this for example:

ReplyDeleteWhat with all the apocalyptic movies in fashion--RESIDENT EVIL, 28 DAYS LATER, CLOVERFIELD, DIARY OF THE DEAD, etc--maybe what some enterprising businessman should do is create a theme park where people get to smash things, burn cars, shoot zombies(with fake guns of course), fight cops, etc. Kinda like WESTWORLD and FUTUREWORLD.
Maybe this way, we can trumanshow the riots and the revolution.
Pay $50 to get in, smash as much as you want, and take all the pictures and tweeter all you want.
Call it Riot Park or Mayhem City. And different theme every week.
Week 1: basketball championship riot.
Week 2: G20 meeting riot
Week 3: Race riot. Discounts for blacks.
Week 4: Gay riot.
Week 5: Ladies' Riot. Burn bras.
Week 6: Hasidim riot.
but it'd be funny if one of these faux-riots spill out in the world and turn into a real revolution.

Don't forget "Police Riot". Although these tend to be smaller, more intimate affairs, like battering in some guys door to serve a warrant on his estranged wife who defaulted on student loans (as recently happened in Stockton), executing a no-knock warrant on the wrong guy and then executing the guy (as recently happened in Tucson), or tasering kids, grannies, house-wives in SUVs, and even a cow.
Speaking of Asian guys and Tiger Mothers...and the ridiculous.
ReplyDeleteThe problem is cell phones with cameras.
ReplyDeleteRemember the 16-on-one black gang rape of a 11 year old Hispanic child three months ago?
The rapists took their own videos and emailed them to each other and their friends via cellphone to cellphone communications, just like the kiddie porn that white girls like to make in the privacy of their bathrooms and send to classmates and friends. Vancouver is merely a continuation of this trend.
The sheer volume of Vancounver footage is amazing. I have already seen a nicely edited four-camera-shot of the entire cop car burning episode.
The (chief of staff) surgeon dad of the arsonist apparently saw SOME of the footage of his kid, realized he would be shortly identified by others, lawyered up, and took the kid downtown.
Dad is on record as saying his kid did not LIGHT the fire. Of course the now-assembled multi-camera shot shows the kid approaching with a lit lighter.
Really, in any mob scene or gang violence situation from now on, one must assume that the entire event is being secretly filmed from multiple camera angles and that within days someone is going to be making courtroom quality trial graphics and posting them on the Internet for free.
Even scarier, all the video is tagged not only with (1) the GPS location data for proving the camera location, but (2) time sync data to prove the video cuts were synchronized correctly and (3)cell phone data to permit the police to contact the videographer of the raw footage to testify as a witness.
The evidence necessary for a bulletproof conviction was created by dozens of people at the very instant of the crime!
What a strange world we live in.
Dear Big Bill:
ReplyDeleteThanks.

Letting people know you're not on facebook is a bit like letting people know you don't watch tv.

ReplyDelete"Letting people know you're not on facebook is a bit like letting people know you don't watch tv."
ReplyDeleteIt makes people roll their eyes with how hipster you are?
Damn Jody, you know how to start a bruva's morning. Those videos/photos were on hit!
ReplyDeleteThe one of the WhiteBoy in front of the department store getting pummeled by Asians for playing Dudley DoRight made me laugh until tears came out of my eyes!
A)Take No Shit From Anybody SoKo Bad Ass MuddaFuggazz: Does "anybody" include your bro's up North? B)Hockey Stick Guy:One question. Is he getting laid NOW??
ReplyDelete"The problem is cell phones with cameras."
ReplyDeleteIt's not a problem if you're a law-abiding individual. Paranoid though I can be, I don't really expect a rash of cell phone users to stick their phones under restroom and dressing room doors, film the unsuspecting and then upload the results. Do you?
Or are you merely lamenting the fact that the camera adds ten pounds?
asian riot boy.
ReplyDeletei hope his mom isn't remotely like amy chua, otherwise he is in trooouuuble! it'll be a relief for him when the police come to arrest him. (~_^)
This Douche is without a doubt the greatest Vancouver rioter of all!*
ReplyDelete*Footnote, if you have testicles and that wasn't funny, you aren't alive!
"I have never, ever, ever wanted to be on Facebook. I just don't get it. Why?"
ReplyDeleteFor some reason, people like images and the feeling of connecting/sharing. Facebook is like this comment section but with photos, videolinks, etc.
Well, Canadians, true to their form, made a very progressive point. Whites riots too, so it'll be 'racist' for people like Taylor to say only blacks and diversity leads to rioting. This was a white riot carried out by affluent white kids.
ReplyDeleteThere is a barbarian in each of us, which is why we cheer on movie violence, play violent video games, root for sports, go to rowdy parties, etc.
But the barrier between violence-as-fantasy and violence-as-reality seems to be breaking down for many. These kids seem to be acting out what they saw in movies, music videos, sports fields(what with hockey being a very punchdrunk game). And there is the conceit of street violence = radical commitment/rebellion against the system.
When black kids from broken down families act like this, it's ugly but not surprising. But when white kids from 'good families' act like this, there is something wrong with the culture in general.
"steve some bad stuff happened in this riot, like this:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eCny7bhORJU
and this

total BS. identify and arrest every one of those guys. 2 year prison sentence for all of them."
I agree totally. What makes me especially angry is mhat these thugs, if they were to be manhandled by cops and dragged to the station, would be the first to whine, 'I wanna call my dad. I want my lawyer!'
They should be mowed down.
It's funny. On the one hand, today's generation is the most materialistic/consumerist ever. They have all sorts of gadgets, plenty of food, lots of pleasure, a lot of material comfort and wealth, entertainment, recreation, cheaps means of travel(Globe Trekker phenom). Even poor kids have nifty cellphones--something even billionaires didn't have 20 yrs ago. They embrace globalism as opportunity, social networking, moneymaking, love-seeking, greater freedom, etc.
ReplyDeleteBut, it's like a part of them wanna rebel against the whole thing as oppressive, repressive, tyrannical, mind-numbing, totalitarian, etc.
And movies like MATRIX are both a program and product of this paradox. It's Marx and Calvin Klein. In the Matrixian world, everything is cool with lots of wealth, fun, and opportunities. BUT, characters discover it's all a mind-control illusion by the forces with the REAL power.
Navigating in this world, you both enjoy all the cool/flashy/hip stuff of the Matrixian world but also discover your real self and rebel against it.
But of course, the 'reality' in MATRIX is also a fantasy, that of white kids in the West believing themselves to be 'authentic', in touch with third world salt of the earth, and etc.
Your average Canadian kid owns an Apple Ipad but reads Naomi Klein. Klein, along with Michael Moore and Cornel West, is also a hybrid creature: a self-promoting, self-hyping egocentric multi-millionaire who makes noise about 'social justice'. And on the right, there's Alex Jones telling kids that the whole narrative is about us-vs-them. Us little people who wanna be free and them big powerful people who seek to control and own us by addicting us to false-freedoms. Ron Paul defends capitalism by attacking corporatism, which is why he's so popular among young people. (But when capitalists succeed bigtime, don't they turn into corporatists? How else could companies like Microsoft and Exxon run? Or Hollywood or any giant thing for that matter?)
If Moore and Jones have something in common, it's the idea that the new oppression is soft than hard. The powers-that-be feed us gadgets, toys, fun, bread and circuses, etc, so that we don't know what's really being done to us. We are all like Chinese victims of the British opium trade. Our 'freedom' is really an addictive slavery.
Kids hear about this, especially with the burgeoning of 'radical' internet sites on both right and left.
ReplyDeleteOn the one hand, kids are totally into this materialist/consumerist culture. Paradoxically, it's their immersion in and addiction to this culture that makes them strike out against all its manifestations. So, kids with nokia phones will smash nokia phone shops and take pics with nokia phones. Kids with debit cards will smash the bank which issued them. Kids who want a car for birthday present from their parents will torch cars.
And our pop culture seems to understand and exploit this paradoxical intoxication or paradoxiction, and give the kids what they want: stuff like V FOR VENDETTA, which is an expensive blow-em-up movie made for profit and greed but which panders to populist youth or popouthist rage, which isn't real rage(of the desperate poor)but put-on rage by spoiled brats who wanna feel cool, hip,and rebellious--like the band 'rage against the machine', or rage against the machine as part of the machine. They want their starbucks coffee and ipods but also to see themselves as modern day Che Guevaras.
Burgess and Kubrick foresaw this in Clockwork Orange. Huxley failed to see the primacy of the youth element in future society. BRAVE NEW WORLD is infantile in many ways but still an orderly one of adults. Burgess's great insight was the centrality of youth in future social dynamics. He understood the energies unleashed by rock n roll, consumer capitalism, the pain-free nanny-state welfare-ism, and materialist philosophy doing away with old gods and morality.
He knew that Nazis and commies had harnessed youth power but also controlled and shaped it. But non-or anti-authoritarian consumer-capitalism has a way of unleashing youth energies like never before but no way of controlling them. So, consumer-capitalism barbarizes our kids with wanton materialism. Kids feel both happy and sick from an overdose of this culture and find meaning in radical politics.
But they are so addicted to fun that they cannot let it go. Also, many who become artists and entertainers are also the product of Marx and Calvin Klein--or maybe it should be called Calvin Klein and Naomi Klein.
Your average writer in Hollywood is some liberal kid who's read some Chomsky but also loves pop culture. If capitalism is the enemy but if one is addicted to capitalism, what is to be done?
Well, maybe they could use capitalism to subvert capitalism. So, capitalism now cannibalizes itself from within, like the zombies in the shopping mall in DAWN OF THE DEAD. Kids seek consumerist fun/goodies from BOURNE TRILOGY MOVIES and rock/rap music, but the message they get is capitalism--the very stuff that gave them fun--is evil and oppressive.
Or, maybe the END OF HISTORY(in the good sense) really is the end of history(in the bad sense, as it meaning end of meaning and eventual end of civilization; Dawn to Decadence.) Though there were horrors in the past, the sense of a better future lent meaning to life and humanity. But if liberal democracy is the end of history, then there's nothing more to be done. There is only freedom, goodies, fun, consumerism, nanny-statism, materialism, etc. But man cannot do without meaning, purpose, some great goal. Since today's kids have no such goal, they desperately look for their great 'revolutionary moment' whereever they can find it--15 minutes of flame. So, smashing a store window becomes meaningful. Suddenly, a dull suburban kid feels he's either badass or radical.
ReplyDeleteMaybe the Amish got it right.
I've a great idea.
ReplyDeleteHow about
Epic Beard Man vs Epic Hockey Nerd?
ELEGY TO FIGHTING, aka FIGHTING ELEGY, is maybe the best film on the anarchic energy of young males, both in its exuberance and excesses. And also how it may be harnessed/recruited by the system. It is paradoxical that the most oppressive regimes brilliantly made use of the most anarchic of all human energies: young male energy. Nazis with SA and SS. Communists with young zealot goons. Iran with its Revolutionary Guard. Ottoman and their use of Janissaries--young Greek boys enslaved/recruited to be warriors for Islam.

Maybe Ken Kesey was more prophetic than we realize. In ONE WHO FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST, the system is controlled by matriarchy; recently, both in Europe and Canada, there has been a rise in mother-hen power in politics, culture, academia, economics, etc). Unlike older form of Social Order dominated by men, mother-hen/nurse-ratched/big-sister power isn't about using and channeling young male energy but castrating it altogether. In OFOTCN, the lobotomy on McMurphy is a kind of castration. If the Old Order ruled by Old Men suppressed but channeled young male energy into SOMETHING, the New Order ruled by Old Women(in pants suits) have no use for young male energy at all.
So, even though Bill Clinton(the eternal kid) and most of these youths in Vancouver are 'progressive', the transgression could be a manifestation of young male rebellion against frigid/cold/castrating mother-hen-ism. Come to think of it, this isn't particularly new. Hemingway hated his mother for raising him in a sissy manner--he was sometimes made to wear girl's clothes. Due to Victorianism and emphasis on manners, the wasp world created more of an asexual environment were men were less manly and women were less womanly(at least at the social core). And protestantism, like communism, suppressed differences between male and female, at least more than Catholicism did. Look at Quakers, and men and women wear nearly identical clothing. And there was a strong element of asexuality in radical feminism.
So, if Paglia's pagan-catholico-feminism was a reaction to protestant-overly-Jewish-intellectual feminism of the 60s and 70s, maybe some of the young male violence we're witnessing is a case of Randall-McMurphyism against mother-hen-ism.
Even though all those kids in Vancouver may be PC, maybe a part of their soul feels emasculated by mother-hen nanny-state-ism that dominates society. Since PC doesn't allow them to attack 'progressive ideals', their male energies burst out in mindless acts of vandalism. There is an Indian in each of them that wants to lift up the waterfountain and hurl it at the window.
"How many of these kids are 'radicals' and how many are beerheads? We see this stuff at every G20 meeting. Whole bunch of white kids--from reasonably privileged or well-to-do backgrounds--get together, shout slogans, and have some reason to smash windows, fight cops, burn cars, throw things, scream and bitch about everything, and etc. There was a huge mess in Seattle about 10 yrs ago.
ReplyDeleteAnd most of the rioters in Paris in May 68 were white middle class kids."
aka kids of libs
Nothing more stifling than lib parents.
Think of Obama's girls. If one got preggers, he would probably drag her to the abortionist faster than a conservative would've sent to Aunt Mildred back in the 50's.
Speaking of Korean violence, this has loads of them. The only Korean film I would consider as great.

"When Whites riot its"
ReplyDeleteThere's white people acting white, including in how they riot,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F965rbxetrw&feature=related
and there's SWPL acting black because the media and education system have defined white as bad and black as good.

Not the same thing.

"Confession. What was the most rowdy, unruly, crazy, violent, aggressive, etc thing you did in your youth--teens to early 20s?"
Legally shooting people. (It might be more accurate to say shooting *at* people as i had my eyes closed most of the time.)
"only an oriental would riot with lab safety glasses"
ReplyDeletewe have a winner!!!!
Anon referred to this riot in Bristol, UK:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-13171566
This links to the police riot idea mentioned elsewhere.
In Bristol and at each of the more recent riots in the UK, each one has featured an abandoned police vehicle torched by masked rioters.
Some cynics believe that in each case the police vehicle was deliberately left where it would be trashed. Those of an even more cynical bent, claim that the masked rioters burning the vehicles were themselves police, conducting a false flag operation. Obviously the aim, either way, to make the rioters appear more unsympathetic.

Anonymous @ 12:12 PM (in talking of ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST):
ReplyDeleteMy take on the movie is different than yours (and maybe from that of many others). I*n my view, it's a psychological fake-out intended to illustrate just how mistaken your impressions can be.
Throughout the film, we are led to
appreciate Nurse R. as a demonic, sadistic manipulator of various guys either with whom there's nothing much very wrong or whose conditions have been aggravated by institutionalization and Nurse's constant mental oppression--more or less exquisitely tailored to each one's (mental) inadequacy or malfunction. One--the Indian--is a case of withdrawal coupled with a mild retardation of some sorts. The protagonist (Nicholson) has ended up here for having been involved in imaginative, anti-authoritarian hi-jinks of one sort or another (in which he continues to engage as an inmate).
We are granted our first glimse toward a better understanding of reality when Nicholson is given to understand that most of the other inmates have chosen confinement and could "opt out" at will.
But it is not until the final scene that the truth is made evident: that they're all, to one degree or another, quite insane--Nicholson along with the rest and probably more greatly "disturbed"--EXCEPT for the Indian, whose dummy act (intelligently) kept him from rising above the radar of Nurse's attention, and, at a proper time, making good a solo escape (being sane, intelligent, he understood, also, that the rest--including Nicholson--belonged right where they were and, further, that no reliance could be invested in any of them with respect to his own plans to attain freedom.
Am I wrong? Maybe we could get others--even Steve, the movie reviewer--to comment.
This is beyond sick. Less a diversity riot than a prosperity riot.
