Omar Thornton II

From the San Francisco Chronicle on the black truckdriver who shot 9 people, killing six at his job at a quarry in Cupertino, CA:
Mose said she believed Allman "was just pushed over the edge, he really was. I guess he decided to just take things into his own hands."
Another friend, Walter Wilson, board member of the African American Community Service Agency in San Jose, said, "Shareef felt that there was some discrimination on that job, but I had the impression he had it under control."
Wilson said Allman told him he thought the quarry company was targeting older employees who had seniority for layoffs so it could hire cheaper, younger workers at half the wages.
"He also felt that he encountered discrimination because he was the only black person in the job that he had," Wilson said. "He applied for a supervisor job and they gave it to a person with less experience than him, who was not African American. Shareef thought that maybe they didn't like black folks."
The local head of Allman's union said the driver had just come off of a three-week suspension for hitting a wire on the job with his truck.
"We talked last Friday and he didn't seem to be angry about the suspension," said Bill Hoyt, secretary-treasurer of Teamster Local 287. "He told me he thought he was done wrong, and then there were a couple of things said and we actually laughed."
Hoyt said Allman had also had conflicts with his company in the past over working hours. He said the union hasn't made any conclusions about whether Allman was experiencing racial or age discrimination, but that it would be seeking information.
"There are people up there who have 10 or more years on him, so I'm not sure to what make of the age thing," Hoyt said.
A spokesman for the Lehigh cement plant said the company was crafting a statement about Allman and the shootings, but that it won't go into great detail about his work record.
"There are a lot of issues we still need to sort through, so we won't be offering much on this gentleman's history at the plant," said spokesman Nick Rangel.
The quarry victims were shot during a routine workplace safety meeting. Co-worker Shaffer said Allman had repeatedly yelled, "You think you can f-- with me?" as he shot his victims with a handgun and an assault rifle.
Killed were Mark Munoz, 59, of San Jose, Manuel Pinon, 48, of Newman (Stanislaus County) and John Vallejos, 51, of San Jose. Six other men, including Vallejos' brother, Jesse Vallejos, 52, of Gilroy were wounded.

So, the dead men were Hispanics instead of whites, in contrast to the very similar case of truckdriver Omar Thornton who shot up his beer distribution worksite last year for racism. So, I wouldn't expect as much media and police interest in investigating whether the Hispanic victims had it coming for being racist toward the black shooter as in the crazy Thornton media coverage.

What we won't see at all, of course, is the opposite inquiry: does the national obsession with rooting out racism and demonizing racists encourage unstable blacks to take matters into their own hands? Last January, when a nut murdered six people in Arizona, the press went wild blaming it on Tea Party and immigration restrictionist rhetoric. Of course, that turned out to be all wrong. But what about Thornton and Allman? Let me make a bet: You won't hear much about it.

  4. Steve Sailer: unstable blacks

    Steve -

I swear to God that for the last day or so, I had been meaning to post to one of the other threads an off-topic question: Doesn't the known profile of Shareef Allman just scream out low-IQ schizophrenic [possibly Nation of Islam] negro?

From the first story I saw yesterday:

"You think you can f- with me?" Allman, 49, yelled again and again as he methodically shot his colleagues one by one, said Kerry Shaffer, 50, a temporary worker at the Lehigh Southwest Cement Permanente Plant in the foothills of Cupertino who escaped the carnage...

A neighbor of Allman's said he was upset that he had recently been moved to the night shift. Shaffer said the truck driver had been "reprimanded a lot lately because he's been making a lot of mistakes."

    'Late a lot'

A shop steward told Shaffer that Allman was involved in "more accidents in the last year or two than people have done over 20 years. He was late a lot, and he kept blaming others."

About three hours after the shooting, Allman tried to take a woman's car at a gas station on Homestead Road near Tantau Avenue about 5 miles east of the plant, then shot and wounded her before running into the surrounding neighborhood, police said...

He sounds like a guy who just BARELY had the IQ necessary to put the truck into gear and keep it from running off the road, but who just couldn't keep his schizophrenia under control anymore.

BTW, as I have often tried to emphasize here at iSteve, according to Arthur Hu's Wonderlic-to-IQ conversion formula, the Wonderlic folks recommend an IQ of 100 to 108 for bus & truck drivers.

And I can just about guaran-dadgum-tee you that Shareef Allman didn't have an IQ of 100.

PS: In one of his most recent pieces, Spengler talks about the worldwide shortage of qualified workers, and comes dadgum close to crossing over into Sailer/Murray/Herrnstein territory.

  5. A number of years ago, after another psychotically angry black named Colin Ferguson murdered several whites out of racial hatred a on a commuter train in New York (including the husband of future Representative Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY), who was motivated to enter gun control politics by the shooting), Ferguson's defense (which included Bill Kunstler) floated a hypothetical defense called "black rage." The theory was that low-level, endemic racism suffered by blacks in the US could lead to rage or mental derangement of some sort sufficient to mitigate or vitiate criminal responsibility for their actions. The theory never got tried in court, as Ferguson rejected his celebrity defense lawyer and opted to represent himself. I wonder though if there wasn't something to it, not that racism itself motivates homicidal rage, but that the lovingly-nurtured and tended grievances by and on behalf of American blacks, perhaps themselves powerful enough to elect a President at this point, can be counted on to push some fraction of blacks to murder. We heard all about so-called "stochastic terrorism" around the Loughner shooting from liberals, that supposedly the Tea Party, Limbaugh, Fox News, and anyone else departing from the liberal party-line was somehow knowingly promoting violence by saying or writing things that they knew some percentage of the population to violence:
    http://www.dailykos.com/story/2011/01/10/934890/-Stochastic-Terrorism:-Triggering-the-shooters

I think that the case is all the much clearer here though. Perhaps it's time for the NAACP, Justice Department, Rev. Wright-types, etc. to stop promoting violence. This last week, with the Anwar Al-Awlaki killing, we've accepted that mere words or writings themselves that might promote violence are sufficient justification for the government to extrajudicially kill one of its own citizens. I'm not suggesting that anyone in the US be killed, but the First Amendment allows suppression of speech when it presents a threat of imminent lawless action. Maybe it's time to recognize the threat that the promotion of homicidal "black rage" throughout 12% of the population presents to public safety and to do something about it.

Other factors might have pushed him over the edge. According to a neighbor he was recently put on the graveyard shift. It could be possible that at his age he couldn't handle the switch to working nights and was sleep deprived.

The guy seemed relatively functional. Yeah, he had a criminal record, but it was petty stuff. No drug use or violence, which is pretty impressive for a black man his age. He also had the gumption to write a book and host a public access TV show. The TV show wasn't just him ranting either, he had actual personalities show up.

It would be interesting to look for anything similar in other work place shooters.

Loved how the writer phrases this: "not African American" which means Latino or Asian. You can be damn sure if he was white, it would've been written as:

"they gave it to a WHITE person with less experience than him."

  9. FYI - He killed 3 people, wounded 7. You're sub-title says he killed 6.

I was following the raw news postings as the man-hunt progressed and I am curious if this is really similar to the Omar Thornton case. Superficially I agree - but Allman was part of his community at a different level than Thornton. Allman apparently was well liked and had integrated himself into several community outreach programs - giving his acquaintances a severe case of whiplash with his behaviour yesterday.

Of course the racial angle is already being played, obscuring the first interviews and reportings posted. But I'm wondering if he might have been suffering from some sort of brain disorder (cancer, prion calcification etc) that began to change his behaviour. It sounds like he was on a downhill slope the last year and finally snapped.

More will come out locally, so we'll know more over the next couple of weeks.

    Well, that's possible...

'cept the black percentage in the region in question is roughly the same as that in Alaska or Salt Lake City, and a fraction of the figure in Portland, Oregon. So if almost no blacks live there, it's hard to see them getting squeezed out of anything...

In 1990 when I was representing employees, a black guy came into my office saying he wanted to sue for race discrimination. He'd just been fired from his job as a forklift driver at a bottling plant called Anchor Glass in San Leandro. I asked him why they fired him, and he said, "they just don't like black people, man."

So I called his union rep. He told me the guy liked to smoke dope in his car on his lunch break, and had received two written warnings about it. This was strike three.

When he came back to the office I asked him if these facts were true. He said they were, so I asked how that could add up to race discrimination. His answer?
"They let the white guys do it."

Did I mention this was a glass factory?

  12. Maybe, Steve, and maybe not. The NAACP, Southern Poverty Law Center, the Urban League, well they all have ...

    Wait for it ...

    Wait for it ...

    A LOT OF MONEY.

Now, sometime sooner or later, someone is going to start suing after one of these incidents, figuring that "Black Rage" was fed by ... the NAACP, the Urban League, The Southern Poverty Law Center, the Nation of Islam (wouldn't you just love to depose Louis Farrakhan) and hell maybe Barack Obama and Eric Holder.

First, as a lawyer this gets you on the front pages of every newspaper and all over the TV news. Win-Win! Secondly, deep pockets! Third, survivors are often angry, an easy way to get even. Fourth, did I mention deep pockets? You can't recover much from Omar Thornton's estate, but you can from the local NAACP or Urban League and the Nation of Islam is not exactly popular. SOME lawyer is going to take that plunge sooner or later.

For every case of an angry black male killing a bunch of people at work, there are a dozen cases of white teenage boy killers, so maybe you should talk about that, you know, just so you won't come across as biased - and we all know how unbiased you are!

I think deep down they know they aren't qualified and then they're hyper sensitive. That combined with any psychotic tendencies makes them really nasty personalities.

White teen boys get a lot of play nin the media, but they don't kill as many people as blacks. There's a reason that, despite these dangerouse white boys, people pay a lot to live in a white neighborhood.
All the people I know of personally who have suffered grievous violence or murder, were done in by blacks, with the exception of a couple domestic cases.

Well, reading the newstories, they said that most of his co-workers have been complaining about him for the last year or two, saying that given all his numerous truck driving accidents the workplace was becoming just too dangerous for everyone else. Supposedly, the supervisors had complained to the company that something really needed to be done about him for the sake of the other employees, but nothing ever was, possibly for racial reasons. My guess was they put him on the unpleasant graveyard shift because they thought it was about the only way they could get rid of him. Unfortunately, it worked out differently.

he should be dead. there's no reason to do anything other than hold a simple 1 day military trial, then execute him. it's kind of offensive that he even lived to see the year 2010, but now he's being allowed to see new years on a regular basis. how long will he be alive? until 2020? that's a sign of how weak the united states truly has become.

interesting contrast here between hasan, versus anwar al-awlaki, who the US government just straight up killed, without any type of 10 year long legal process that hasan will be accorded. despite the evidence again al-awlaki being much weaker, whereas hasan yelled out loud that he was an "enemy combatant" and a traitor as he deliberately killed many americans in broad daylight.

  28. I live a block from where he was shot--I drove past the cops barreling in right before they shut down the block on my way to work--and I teach at the school his son graduated from in 2010. The killer lived a block from the school, which means he lived in a pretty upscale neighborhood.

Blacks make up just 1% of San Jose's population; Hispanics have largely chased out the low functioners. The blacks remaining are, as a group, prosperous and middle class--not upper middle, but government worker types. For example, I teach 150 kids, about 10 of them are African American. All of them scored basic or higher on the CST, something that just 40% did in the state.

So this guy was a member of a pretty tight, relatively functional community. He had no criminal record. (He was, as I understand it, estranged from the son who went to my school--that's why there's no mention of his son). He had a public access TV show, wrote books on domestic violence--which suggests, to me, that he may have been an abuser. He was a relatively high status guy in the black community in San Jose.

And he was a truck driver, working for mostly Hispanics. I wonder if it's significant that he worked in the hills of Cupertino, where no one would visit? There's a big disconnect between his job and his status. And it appeared his job was at risk, which he had to know meant he was going to have trouble finding a new job.

But all of this is just what may have tipped him over. Something had to be seriously off-kilter.

And this has diddly to do with IQ or schizophrenia.

  30. Yep, the killer lived in a upscale neighborhood. As mentioned, the blacks in San Jose or the SF Bay area (outside of Oakland) really are middle class and a very, very, small minority. The Asians and Hispanics have squeezed them out. One reason why people like the Bay area and why its so expensive.

You can kinda see why Liberals in big Metro areas are so Pro-immigration. Having the Hispanics -and not blacks - at the bottom of social ladder makes life better for everyone. Less crime, harder workers, less social drama.

BTW, if you consider that Charles Murray [in his infamous Footnote #44] seems to believe that since about 1997, the average IQ of blacks born in the USA is no higher than about 80.2, then Wonderlic's IQ of 108 [as an upper bound for bus & truck drivers] would be getting out into "genius" territory for American blacks.

108 is probably about where Michelle Obama finds herself [I'd guess that her husband is maybe a few points higher than that - probably out around 115], and any black with an IQ of 108 in Silicon Valley would be a senior level figurehead in "human resources" at Apple or Intel [or, in the past, a Captain or even a Rear Admiral at Moffett, in charge of similarly useless make-work tasks for the USN].

  44. I don't view this case - black guy goes on a killing rampage at work - as a vast national trend. There are plenty of white rampage killers. Perhaps blacks are overrepresented in this, as indeed they are in every category of crime. Then again, blacks are less likely to have steady employment, so perhaps that suppresses their representation in this category a little. I don't know.

What I really noticed about the coverage of this story was the ho-hum manner people had about the manhunt for this guy. Google up this guys name, and you'll see a whole bunch of pictures of SWAT commandos hoo-haahing around in thier camos and body-armor with their M-4s at the ready - you'd think it was Mogadishu, not Cupertino. ..."Why are you doing this?" some of the men asked as they tried to duck the bullets.
Ambrosio, 45, said he knew the answer as he lay bleeding under the table. If Allman wanted any of his co-workers dead, it might have been him.
The rampage came less than a week after Ambrosio confronted Allman, telling him that as his union shop steward, he would no longer represent him to management over the numerous safety violations he was accused of committing.
"He's had so many accidents and always said that because he's African-American, the company was after him," Ambrosio said. "He was an unsafe driver." Ambrosio said Allman had turned over a truck and snagged overhead wires when he left the truck bed in the air.
Last Thursday, Ambrosio told Allman that "no one has ever had so many accidents in the company like you have."
Ambrosio set up a meeting Monday morning with management, telling officials that Allman's safety record was so bad, his driving so reckless, that "the workers weren't safe."
Company officials, Ambrosio said, responded by encouraging his fellow drivers to document any further problems.
"The workers were tired of complaining and the company not doing anything," Ambrosio said..."

  52. ""for every black killer there are a dozen teenage white killers"...

    NOT TRUE AT ALL."

Sure it is, they're just living in Afghanitsan right now.

I don't think Truth is really African-American. That wisecrack sounds too white.

The fact that we now so casually accept para-military sweeps as a normal part of police work is disturbing.

Have they caught this fellow yet?
If they haven't, how do you suggest that the police should go about looking for him? Are they supposed to leave their weapons and body armor at the office?

  54. "What I mean is, that about a year before Omar shot up all dem racists in Hartford, another Thornton - Cookie - killed five white members of a suburban Saint Louis city council meeting.

Am I the only one who remembers that?"

No, you're not. I once lived just a few blocks from where Cookie Thornton lived (though I don't think he lived there in my day) and knew or knew of some of the people connected with that case.

I take that as a great compliment, Davey-Boy, but was it a wisecrack?

Do they have to dress in military fatigues and wear black helmets and boots, and ride around in humvees?

The police use to catch armed criminals all the time without making American cities look like Mogadishu.

When I was growing up, your friendly neighborhood police officer didn't look like this:

  57. What I find interesting is that the guy's OWN UNION REP, not only wouldn't represent him, or help him, but was actually going to management to complain about him. That speaks volumes. He must have been an incredibly bad employee for that to be the case. Also it looks like the other workers were all Latinos. These people would have no "white guilt" and wouldn't take the usual nonsense from him that whites have to put up with from blacks.

  59. The media sure let this mass murder story die a quick death just like the black mass murderer that killed an an entire family up in Michigan earlier this year. The last I heard was a description of him as a community activist and author the same morning of the shooting and then nothing else afterwards.

Who? & Whom? obviously determines whether it leads or just bleeds...
