No stereowiping possible

From the New York Times, an article on a U.S. Olympic wrestler getting married.
Becoming an Olympian, and Then a Newlywed

It took me awhile to figure out what the point of this article was that demanded national coverage. Don't jocks get married all the time? Is it surprising that wrestlers tend to be short (to help make their weight class) and dress jockishly even at their weddings? And who cares enough about amateur wrestling to be interested in some wrestler dude's private life?
Oh, wait, it's a Man Bites Dog article! Or, to be precise, Woman Bites Woman.

See, the Olympic wrestler is a woman, so it's a heartwarming Gay Marriage story, which of course needs to be promoted by the Newspaper of Record. (Who knew that women's wrestling was now part of the Olympics?)

And pushing gay marriage overrides even the prime directive of Wiping Out Stereotypes, since the wrestler gal looks like me and Plato got together over a few drinks to dream up the Platonic Ideal of the woman amateur wrestler.

Why is women's wrestling now part of the Olympics? What percentage of the U.S. women's wrestling team is made up of lesbians whose dads were high school wrestlers who didn't have any sons to push onto the mat? And what percentage of the female population is that? O.2%?

Why does the Summer Olympics keep mindlessly replicating for women macho sports that appeal to a negligible fraction of females? In contrast, the Winter Olympics introduces swoopy new sports that more than a few women actually like, such as Snowboard Cross (here's video of the hilarious 2006 women's final), events in which women can do things they like (such as, go fast elegantly and show off, all while wearing this winter's most fashionable sports attire).

But my view that women's sports should try harder to include sports that many women would like is despicably extremist compared to the dominant push to prod a few women into competing in each and every macho sport ever invented by men for men. Where's women's sumo wrestling?

I wouldn't be surprised if someday it will become a national priority to spend a trillion dollars to build a time machine for the express purpose of going 800 years back into medieval times and establishing a Ye Olde Fair Maiden's Jousting League just so the past won't be tainted by the sexist fact that only men jousted. How can we live knowing that in 1212, there must have been some woman somewhere who wanted to joust and couldn't?

Well, she'd have had all of one good joust, and then she'd have been dead.

PS: Looks like "1212" fell under the reign of a Plantagenet named "John Lackland", who was forced to sign Magna Carta three years later.

I kept thinking, "Who'd want to get married, a very memorable day in one's life, dressed so casually? My eyes found the woman's leg tattoo--so stupid--and I kept looking at the funky haircut on the man(actually, he looked like a boy to me), and giving up, I read. Slapped my face, of course, when I saw "gay."

How in the world could I not have guessed? I guess that this morning and afternoon I have been living in the world of ordinary problems as I haven't been able to find the source of my sprinker leak.

I think it would be better to build such time machine to send you back to the Paleolithic era, since you obviously hate any and all kind of social advancement and would probably prefer if we defer to our animal natures with all the gender roles, prejudices, social represession and technological stagnation that comes from excessive attachment to traditions of all sorts.

Let's go back to live in ethocentric tribes constantly at war with other ethnocentric tribes over hunting grounds(a modern analog of that: the nation-state), live lives dedicated to warring and hunting, keeping women at a subservient social role, keeping all rights to able-bodied men who can hunt and war, and uphold myths about gods and fairies and kill all dissidents who want to understand how the Universe really works like when those religious conservatives back in the middle ages burned innumerable scientists at the stake for not agreeing with their myths.

Attachment to irrational traditions, rule-following(no matter how stupid the rules are, conservatives just like to follow social rules) and intolerance towards different people from themselves are the hallmark characteristics of conservatives. If all humans were conservatives, we would all still be living in caves, hunting our food(no wonder conservatives love hunting), making a lot of war with people who have minor phenotypical/cultural characteristics to ourselves and beating women and "nerds" into submission. Thank goodness for those liberals and libertarians!

Is it okay for a female athlete to dope if she is doing it for sexual/emotional/mental reasons, and the competitive advantage is just a pesky side effect?

The overwhelming number of posters to Steve's blog understand than there are people who are atypical in their sexual orientation and those who are atypical in their expression of gender.

We also know that gender is not a a social construct but a genetically and biologically determined outcome of fetal development... or maldevelopment.

Orientation atypicality in males and some females may be the result of the same ...or, for males, at least it may be the result of a biological insult after birth.

However, if you like, go make your blank slate self into anything you so wish. How's that been working out with male homosexuals...you know, the trying to change thingy?

"She was an Atlas of the exurbs, hoisting a 210-pound barbell over her ponytailed head and holding it there, arms just barely aquiver, while the high school gymnasium exploded in cheers..
At that moment on a recent Saturday, Jessica Reynolds, 17 and weighing in at 261 pounds, broke the state record for girls’ weightlifting, a high school sport sanctioned only in Florida and embraced, improbably, by girls of all shapes, sizes and athletic abilities.

    Wiki states,

"Sex testing has been done as recently as the Atlanta Olympic games in 1996, but is no longer practiced, having been officially stopped by the International Olympic Committee in 1999. This followed a resolution passed at the 1996 International Olympic Committee (IOC) World Conference on Women and Health "to discontinue the current process of gender verification during the Olympic Games." In individual cases the IOC stills holds on to the right to test on gender. [6]

"Newer rules permit transsexual athletes to compete in the Olympics after having completed sex reassignment surgery, being legally recognized as a member of the sex they wish to compete as, and having undergone two years of hormonal therapy (unless they transitioned before puberty).[7] These controversies continued with the 2008 Olympic games in Beijing.[8]..."

If gay marriage is advancement then I'd rather be primitive.

The reason I imagine that Donald Trump is not for gay marriage is the some of the same reasons I am not for gay marriage. It is aesthetically unappealing. I am sure the Donald must constantly deal with men dressed as women trying to get into the Miss America pageant, which would totally ruin it.

It takes a poorly functioning mind indeed to think that sexual orientation is innate while at the same time gender is a social construct. Such is the modern liberal, a font of silliness.

They float effortlessly, with lots of hard work to do so before hand. They're real women not icky transgender freaks. You don't have to be tall like the Beach Volleyball babes. And there are plenty of global pros.

Plus its a very White sport, which means bigger ratings, sponsorship, etc. I think the peak has been reached and passed, on the downside for steroid freaks of Track and Field on the woman's side. Just not feminine enough. You could do the sort of camera work and commentary on Women's Surfing that you do with Ice Skating, which female audiences also love.

The downside with women's surfing is that it doesn't appeal to upper middle class parents:

    - Kind of dangerous ("Blue Crush" is a pretty scary movie about a slip of a girl trying to make a comeback after a major injury by a big wave)

    - No college scholarships

    - Not upwardly mobile -- surfing is too addictive, so it can get in the way of a career

    - Parents have enough worries about their daughters hanging around Jeff Spicoli-type male surfers as is without encouraging them to take up surfing.

This point of yours is so ridiculous that I am not sure if you are serious with it.

Have people ever been denied citizenship rights for being too tall or short? Napoleon was 5'2 and he had no problem climbing to the top position of one of the West's most powerful countries. Have people too short or tall been put in shackles and sold like plowing animals to be worked to death?

And no one is saying you shouldn't pay attention to ethnic differences. Where have I stated that? I said you shouldn't grant or deny rights to any specific groups of people over any other groups of people. I have no problem with you noticing that some people are short and some are tall or that some are white and others black, but I do have a problem with you wanting to make the State discriminate in favor of one or other groups because of this.

It's reasonable safe, girls of all sizes can participate, it makes participants stronger and more fit, and it's probably more useful for self defense than any karate courses the girls are likely to take.

There's a problem though with women's wrestling, and many other women's sports. Different sports emphasize different body types, but with some exception (sumo!) the men who are champions in men's sports are men that other men would be happy to look like. But that isn't true for most women's sports.

Most high school guys would be happy to look like the guys who end up winning their weight classes, and even if they have little chance of achieving such a body it gives them something to strive for. But the girls who end up winning city championships in wrestling are going to have much less appealing body types, and that is going to demotivate a lot of girls who might otherwise have had fun and benefited from the sport, and who wouldn't have ended up looking that way no matter how hard they trained anyway.

  67. "Wishful thinking on your part. Both my parents are conservatives and I turned out a libertarian. So is my brother. We will be around for a long time. Intolerance and social repression shall not rule the day..."

Oooooorrrr...your parents (and all the rest of the parents of you nutjobs) were genetically loony-lefty at heart but the conservative zeitgeist forced them to shut up and reproduce. Once you cranks got control of the culture, then your genes coding for preference for not-breeding could be expressed and, so, summarily bred out.

Which leaves you with only the grim hope that an occasional new mutation will spawn another lefty.
There will certainly not be enough of you to maintain what you've wrought.

Hey, stupid: You spelled commit wrong.
Far be it from me to be a grammar nanny, but if you are going to diagnose someone as stupid for using "is" instead of "are," (which was more likely a sly reference to Pogo than an actual mistake) then, well, physician heal thyself.

As another poster said, look up Richard Raskind who became Renee Richards.

(Of course, how can you argue with Richards' participation when there was Martina Navratilova + steroids?)

Genetic determinism at it's best. No space for human volition at all. Of course, you supply no evidence of the existence of the genes that causes one to be conservative or liberal.

Funny, also, that all those Europeans who are not having kids and leading countries like Italy and France to become extinct if it weren't for immigration are all the descendents of conservatives. Traditional Christian conservatives, who had traditional heterosexual families. All those Italians and Frenchmen who are refusing to start families are their kids. Riddle me that, dumbass? Political inclinations are a combination of a myriad factors and not only genetics. It might not be genetic at all.

But nothing of this matters: you conservatives have been losing power for some 50 years now, and you will continue to lose power. We FORCED you to accept desegregation, we FORCED you to accept women's right and now we are FORCING you to accept gay rights, and we WILL continue to FORCE you to become civilized or we will punish you severely for it. Understood? Your small-minded a-holish mentality is not acceptable, and we will change it by force if necessary.

Rereading, it's a good bet that this anon is the same poster as claims to be a libertarian above.
Quoting, "Intolerance and social repression shall not rule the day..."

Later, note the "will FORCE you to become" "change you by FORCE," "not acceptable," "punish you severely," etc.

So, what we can conclude here is, if you don't do what us tolerant, non-repressive libertarians tell you to do, we will drop the entire weight of our repressive totalitarian regime down upon your head.

Scratch a "libertarian," find a Stalinist.

Wrong. You show a sophomoric understanding of what libertarianism is. Libertarianism is about respecting the EQUALITY OF RIGHTS and freedom of all, and not of a few select groups.

To libertarian doctrine, you do NOT have the "freedom" to use your freedom to remove rights from others. For instance, you cannot use popular vote to remove rights from blacks and reinstate segregation. You do NOT have the freedom to force religious teachings at public schools just because MOST people believe in God.

Libertarianism is about, first and foremost, EQUALITY OF RIGHTS to all functioning adults without regards to citizenship, national or ethnic background, religious denomination or sexual orientation. That means libertarianism is pro-individual and anti nationalist, anti-racist, and anti-sexist.

You do not have the right to mistreat and discriminate against a black or gay person just because libertarianism gives you the right to live your life as you see fit. It does give you the right to live your life as you see fit as LONG AS YOU DO NOT RESTRICT THE FREEDOM OF OTHERS BY DOING SO.

This is what conservatives do not understand about libertarianism. It is about personal freedom and against the government discriminating in favor of minorities, yes, but it only supports personal freedom to the point where your personal freedom does not infringe upon the legal equality of rights of others. Libertarianism is against the personal "freedom" of a man of raping a woman just because he wants to, because this violates her rights to her own body and dignity. Likewise, it is against white heterosexual males using their power to deprive white women and minorities of their rights, and against white people doing this to minorities - and it is against special treatment for minorities.

So yes, libertarians are "liberals" on most social issues, but not entirely. And we are very conservative fiscally and economically.

  73. This point of yours is so ridiculous that I am not sure if you are serious with it.

So it seems. Personally, I thought it was obvious that I was being sarcastic, but I guess shouldn't have underestimated the zealousness of juvenile libtard with a "Hater" in his sights.

And no one is saying you shouldn't pay attention to ethnic differences. Where have I stated that?

Calm down. I didn't say you said it. But think about it, where does the zany idea that "race doesn't exist" come from? It comes from the loonie tunes on the "progressive left" who are freaked out by it. Why are they freaked out by race? I suggest it's because of the thought whites might wake up to the ways in which societies screws them over in favor of other races and to their impending racial dispossession, and decide to put a stop to it, which would be very, very "anti-progressive."

but I do have a problem with you wanting to make the State discriminate in favor of one or other groups because of this.

Great. So put a stop to anti-white discrimination then. It should be hard to find. It's virtually state policy, existing at they very highest levels of policy in American education, American employment, American immigration, and American culture. Get to work.

Thanks. You have just confirmed the stereotupe about conservatives with this "brilliant" point of yours.

Lol, you've got a lot to learn. That's okay. We all did once.

We who, white boy? All you've done is drink the Kool-Aid.

You're like some third-tier KGB agent interrogating a prisoner circa November 1991.

But unlike the KGB, your ilk hasn't forced us to accept anything. They've merely made it more difficult for us to voice any objections. Blacks are still priced out of housing available to whites all over the country, women still earn only about 2/3 what white men earn and gays are allowed to "marry" in only a handful of states. So much for the success of the pet projects you listed.

You'd better hope your side doesn't succeed in turning the US into a Third World nation. You may think you're going to sit around with your black and brown brethren singing Kumbaya and congratulating yourselves on how many conservative heads you've stuck on pikes. But the reality will be quite different, I assure you.

  78. "And we are very conservative fiscally and economically."

This is hysterically funny. Since you open borders "libertarians" claim that Americans have no right to control who comes into our country, you enable Big Business to fiscally rape the country and increase their monopolies, unhindered.

Conservatism is about small business / yeoman farmers / free enterprise for a free people and a broad middle class.

Open borders is about cheap stoop- labor for the greater profits of Agriprocessors corp. and Bank of America.

It could, by all rights, be termed neoslavery, but with the added benefit that, unlike the Southern plantation owners, the New Slavers don't have to mess with the tedious business of providing the housing, food and medical care for their slave laborers -- they push that off onto the society at large.
Privatize the Profits, Socialize the Costs. For a good, dedicated Monopolist, what's not to like?

An open borders libertarian is just a liberal who smokes grass and hates taxes (well, the ones levied on himself, anyway. Taxes on others? Great!).

    Oh grow up.

As if life is simple and straightforward enough for one simple-minded idealistic political philosophy to provide all the answers for (even its perspective is on the whole valuable).

ps - Demographics is destiny. What does libertarianism have to say about that -- besides shrieking and howling in outrage, I mean?
