The New York Post runs a long Reuters article on George Zimmerman full of valuable information. Here's a minor bit that answers one question that struck me: Whereas he looked quite mestizo in the notorious orange shirt photo, why, lately, does a skinnier, shaven-headed, suited Zimmerman look a bit like the President?
The 28-year-old insurance-fraud investigator comes from a deeply Catholic background and was taught in his early years to do right by those less fortunate. He was raised in a racially integrated household and himself has black roots through an Afro-Peruvian great-grandfather - the father of the maternal grandmother who helped raise him.
So, he's not just a mestizo, he's a "pardo," like Hugo Chavez calls himself.
More good stuff:
A criminal justice student who aspired to become a judge, Zimmerman also concerned himself with the safety of his neighbors after a series of break-ins committed by young African-American men.
Though civil rights demonstrators have argued Zimmerman should not have prejudged Martin, one black neighbor of the Zimmermans said recent history should be taken into account.
"Let's talk about the elephant in the room. I'm black, OK?" the woman said, declining to be identified because she anticipated backlash due to her race. She leaned in to look a reporter directly in the eyes. "There were black boys robbing houses in this neighborhood," she said. "That's why George was suspicious of Trayvon Martin."
"MIXED" HOUSEHOLD
George Michael Zimmerman was born in 1983 to Robert and Gladys Zimmerman, the third of four children. Robert Zimmerman Sr. was a U.S. Army veteran who served in Vietnam in 1970, and was stationed at Fort Myer in Arlington, Virginia, in 1975 with Gladys Mesa's brother George. Zimmerman Sr. also served two tours in Korea, and spent the final 10 years of his 22-year military career in the Pentagon, working for the Department of Defense, a family member said.
In his final years in Virginia before retiring to Florida, Robert Zimmerman served as a magistrate in Fairfax County's 19th Judicial District.
Robert and Gladys met in January 1975, when George Mesa brought along his army buddy to his sister's birthday party. She was visiting from Peru, on vacation from her job there as a physical education teacher. Robert was a Baptist, Gladys was Catholic. They soon married, in a Catholic ceremony in Alexandria, and moved to nearby Manassas.
Okay, so, yeah, we all know Bob Dylan's real name is Robert Zimmerman, but there really are a whole bunch of people in America with Germanic names who aren't Jewish at all or are only marginally Jewish. They just tend to be less famous per capita than Jewish people with Germanic names. A Baptist American named Robert Zimmerman, George's father, is more likely to never become famous than a Jewish American named Robert Zimmerman
Gladys came to lead a small but growing Catholic Hispanic enclave within the All Saints Catholic Church parish in the late 1970s, where she was involved in the church's outreach programs. Gladys would bring young George along with her on "home visits" to poor families, said a family friend, Teresa Post.
"It was part of their upbringing to know that there are people in need, people more in need than themselves," said Post, a Peruvian immigrant who lived with the Zimmermans for a time.
Post recalls evening prayers before dinner in the ethnically diverse Zimmerman household, which included siblings Robert Jr., Grace, and Dawn. "It wasn't only white or only Hispanic or only black - it was mixed," she said. ....
Zimmerman's maternal grandmother, Cristina, who had lived with the Zimmermans since 1978, worked as a babysitter for years during Zimmerman's childhood. For several years she cared for two African-American girls who ate their meals at the Zimmerman house and went back and forth to school each day with the Zimmerman children.
"They were part of the household for years, until they were old enough to be on their own," Post said.
Zimmerman served as an altar boy at All Saints from age 7 to 17, church members said.
"He wasn't the type where, you know, 'I'm being forced to do this,' and a dragging-his-feet Catholic," said Sandra Vega, who went to high school with George and his siblings. "He was an altar boy for years, and then worked in the rectory too. He has a really good heart."
George grew up bilingual, and by age 10 he was often called to the Haydon Elementary School principal's office to act as a translator between administrators and immigrant parents. At 14 he became obsessed with becoming a Marine, a relative said, joining the after-school ROTC program at Grace E. Metz Middle School and polishing his boots by night. At 15, he worked three part-time jobs - in a Mexican restaurant, for the rectory, and washing cars - on nights and weekends, to save up for a car. ...
In 2004, Zimmerman partnered with an African-American friend and opened up an Allstate insurance satellite office, Donnelly said.
Then came 2005, and a series of troubles. Zimmerman's business failed, he was arrested, and he broke off an engagement with a woman who filed a restraining order against him. ...
Zimmerman enrolled in Seminole State College in 2009, and in December 2011 he was permitted to participate in a school graduation ceremony, despite being a course credit shy of his associate's degree in criminal justice. Zimmerman was completing that course credit when the shooting occurred. ...
By the summer of 2011, Twin Lakes was experiencing a rash of burglaries and break-ins. Previously a family-friendly, first-time homeowner community, it was devastated by the recession that hit the Florida housing market, and transient renters began to occupy some of the 263 town houses in the complex. Vandalism and occasional drug activity were reported, and home values plunged. One resident who bought his home in 2006 for $250,000 said it was worth $80,000 today.
At least eight burglaries were reported within Twin Lakes in the 14 months prior to the Trayvon Martin shooting, according to the Sanford Police Department. Yet in a series of interviews, Twin Lakes residents said dozens of reports of attempted break-ins and would-be burglars casing homes had created an atmosphere of growing fear in the neighborhood.
In several of the incidents, witnesses identified the suspects to police as young black men. Twin Lakes is about 50 percent white, with an African-American and Hispanic population of about 20 percent each, roughly similar to the surrounding city of Sanford, according to U.S. Census data.
One morning in July 2011, a black teenager walked up to Zimmerman's front porch and stole a bicycle, neighbors told Reuters. A police report was taken, though the bicycle was not recovered. ...
But it was the August incursion into the home of Olivia Bertalan that really troubled the neighborhood, particularly Zimmerman. Shellie was home most days, taking online courses towards certification as a registered nurse.
On August 3, Bertalan was at home with her infant son while her husband, Michael, was at work. She watched from a downstairs window, she said, as two black men repeatedly rang her doorbell and then entered through a sliding door at the back of the house. She ran upstairs, locked herself inside the boy's bedroom, and called a police dispatcher, whispering frantically.
"I said, 'What am I supposed to do? I hear them coming up the stairs!'" she told Reuters. Bertalan tried to coo her crying child into silence and armed herself with a pair of rusty scissors.
Police arrived just as the burglars - who had been trying to disconnect the couple's television - fled out a back door. Shellie Zimmerman saw a black male teen running through her backyard and reported it to police.
After police left Bertalan, George Zimmerman arrived at the front door in a shirt and tie, she said. He gave her his contact numbers on an index card and invited her to visit his wife if she ever felt unsafe. He returned later and gave her a stronger lock to bolster the sliding door that had been forced open.
"He was so mellow and calm, very helpful and very, very sweet," she said last week. "We didn't really know George at first, but after the break-in we talked to him on a daily basis. People were freaked out. It wasn't just George calling police ... we were calling police at least once a week."
In September, a group of neighbors including Zimmerman approached the homeowners association with their concerns, she said. Zimmerman was asked to head up a new neighborhood watch. He agreed. ...
Less than two weeks later, another Twin Lakes home was burglarized, police reports show. Two weeks after that, a home under construction was vandalized.
The Retreat at Twin Lakes e-newsletter for February 2012 noted: "The Sanford PD has announced an increased patrol within our neighborhood ... during peak crime hours.
"If you've been a victim of a crime in the community, after calling police, please contact our captain, George Zimmerman."
EMMANUEL BURGESS - SETTING THE STAGE
On February 2, 2012, Zimmerman placed a call to Sanford police after spotting a young black man he recognized peering into the windows of a neighbor's empty home, according to several friends and neighbors.
"I don't know what he's doing. I don't want to approach him, personally," Zimmerman said in the call, which was recorded. The dispatcher advised him that a patrol car was on the way. By the time police arrived, according to the dispatch report, the suspect had fled.
On February 6, the home of another Twin Lakes resident, Tatiana Demeacis, was burglarized. Two roofers working directly across the street said they saw two African-American men lingering in the yard at the time of the break-in. A new laptop and some gold jewelry were stolen. One of the roofers called police the next day after spotting one of the suspects among a group of male teenagers, three black and one white, on bicycles.
Police found Demeacis's laptop in the backpack of 18-year-old Emmanuel Burgess, police reports show, and charged him with dealing in stolen property. Burgess was the same man Zimmerman had spotted on February 2.
And there's much else, such as why Zimmerman bought a gun.
Here's a question: Whom would you rather have as a neighbor: George Zimmerman or Trayvon Martin?
The overall picture that has finally emerged is the opposite of the Prestige Press's narrative: while an occasional screw-up, Zimmerman was way above average in altruism and pro-social activity, while Martin was increasingly seduced toward the dark side by hip-hop culture: apparently involved in burglary of jewelry.
On the other hand, let me point out that Trayvon's trajectory through age 17 didn't inevitably doom him to a life in and out of prison: three school suspensions of increasing severity and an unproven but probable suspicion of burglary or fencing burgled goods is pretty bad. But if he'd had the same track record at 15, his chance of pulling out and getting back on the straight and narrow would seem far worse. As of 17, he didn't appear to belong to an organized street gang, which strikes me as key. My impression is that the appeal of joining a criminal gang starts to diminish pretty rapidly in the late teen years, so the key for his life would likely have been staying out of trouble enough to graduate from high school. His parents had some resources to move him around to get him away from the bad influences he was hanging out with in Miami. In general, he comes across as a classic victim of hip-hop, the kind of kid who would have been okay if pop culture wasn't constantly telling him to act like a thug.
My vague impression is that younger people in America are trending in the direction of Zimmerman rather than Martin: away from outlawry, toward pro-social behavior, conformism, authoritarianism, and so forth. You'll notice that the prestige press's response to this case was to play up Martin not as a would-be thug, but as an angelic innocent, while Zimmerman was portrayed as a Loose Cannon.
Sheeeet, if Obama had a Latin cousin, he would look like George Zimmerman. So, his would-be cousin shot his would-be son. Only in America.
ReplyDeleteSo, he's not just a mestizo, he's a "pardo,"
ReplyDeleteInterestingly, the white Latin Americans are pardos as well:

Clearly, having black friends will not insulate you from charges of racism.
ReplyDeleteDerbyshire was wrong!
Well well, this Reuters reportage about Twin Lakes certainly doesn't make Rich Benjamin's NYT op-ed now look completely, utterly full-of-it.
ReplyDeleteSheeeet, if Obama had a Latin cousin...
ReplyDelete...would he be living in a mud hut?
To skittle a mocking bird.
ReplyDeleteThis is absolutely luscious. So it's Black-on-Black violence after all, but we Euro-Americans can feel guilty about that, too, what with all our implicitly White hijinks. This is linked and commented on at:
ReplyDeletehttp://ex-army.blogspot.com/2012/04/anotjher-trayvonzimmerman-race-card.html.
Being 1/8 black normally would be enough for Zimmerman to be legally classified as black in the United States. While the One Drop Rule may not be quite as absolute in practice as it is in theory, that is relevant to people with very small amounts of black ancestry, say 1/32 or 1/64. It is inconceivable that a person who is 1/8 black (an octoroon) would be considered anything except black.
ReplyDeleteThe fact that his black ancestor was Peruvian may complicate matters, however.
So Zimmerman basically looks like an angel. A good all around citizen angered at blacks causing mayhem in the neighborhood. As usual.
ReplyDeleteAt least one journalist out there still knows his job.
ReplyDelete_Osvaldo M.
Ron Unz wrote that tv shows like 24 was making torture be accepted by society.
ReplyDeleteI think 24 also made us accept the idea of a black president...
Pardo is a common designation in Brazil, some intellectuals have said that America is becoming Brazil 2.0
ReplyDeleteZimmerman and Obama mixed looks its how most Americans will look in the Future.
The tragic Octoroon.
ReplyDeleteWhite liberals... don't wanna face their own 'racist' fears, and so they project them to others and attack it.
ReplyDeleteYou people can't possibly be this naive, can you?
All of this stuff is intentional - divide and conquer, divide and conquer, divide and conquer.
BTW, to their credit, AoSHQ is running an important new story about the recycling of these ancient tactics: "...kind of like how the Romans used to conquer little villages in the Mediterranean: they’d go into little Turkish towns somewhere, they’d find the first five guys they’d run into, and they’d crucify them..."
I'm reading Harris' The Nuture Assumption right now. I suspect Steve has read it as well. It makes the case against hip-hop culture even more damning. It is also making me wonder why we haven't heard about any of Martin's other friends besides his girlfriend.
ReplyDeleteNice article, but GZ still doesn't look a bit like Obama, from any angle. And if you wanna talk about a relevant trend, it's that in black life, the new (self)- entitlement is that nobody is allowed to speak to you except in the most fawning terms. I've seen no acknowledgment of this here, which tells me Steve has very few readers in the their 20's.
ReplyDeleteSection 8 housing bringing black crime to what was once a quiet Jewish town
ReplyDeleteThat links is #3424354 confirmation of one of Derb's rules: "When accosted by unknown blacks, keep moving". The guy might have had his jaw intact if he would simply not stop.
"The new self entitlement is that no one is allowed to speak with you except in the most fawning terms."
ReplyDeleteI'll address that. My theory is that blacks today have the same spot in the US social spectrum as slaveowners had circa 1860. They expect deference at all times- and when they don't get it they expect to be able to inflict vengeance upon their disrespectors. Kind of like how SC Representative Preston Brooks felt entitled to club Senator Edwin Sumner into a coma, circa 1854, because he had disrespected the South. For how this turned out read a book about the Civil War, or take a gander at what Fred Reed wrote in column #516, more recently. I know he's obscure, but available via google.
Yes, that's real reporting. It serves to make an already sad story even sadder.
ReplyDeleteWhat a horrible chain of events this is, and for so many people. And things will probably just get worse.
David Simon on the whole affair.
ReplyDeleteWhite Hispanic sounds about right. We tend to concentrate on Zimmerman's appearance but he is his father's son too. There is something not just white but positively Germanic about his behavior. A real burgher, he is.
ReplyDeleteI think Steve young MEN are looking for a role of authority and responsibility. A Sergeant in the Marine Corps will exercise more authority and responsibility over his men's lives (even in training if he screws up people die) than a CEO of a small-sized company. I mean really, what possible interest does a life of American Idol and other gay/female culture offer?
ReplyDeleteSounds like I was correct, Zimmerman and company were trapped in houses underwater, under crime siege (like Victor Davis Hanson in Fresno) and angry about it. The Black response has been to claim "Droit Du Seignor" (which never actually existed btw) of freedom to burgle and assault as they please. This pattern (of low-level ethnic cleansing and ethnic warfare) has characterized the Black underclass since the WWII years (Detroit's 1943 riots). It is NOT rap driven, rather rap is driven by the changes in Black culture towards hyper violence and thuggery in general.
"In general, he comes across as a classic victim of hip-hop, the kind of kid who would have been okay if pop culture wasn't constantly telling him to act like a thug."
ReplyDeleteHis parents are like so many parents of kids I taught, kids who seem like Martin. They tell themselves they are good parents, but they make only temporary efforts at intervention.
For example, think about this. During this last suspension, the divorced mother and father evidently agreed to let the dad supervise Trayvon for a bit, allow him to stay at the house of his father's girlfriend.
Ask yourself if you'd have allowed your 17 year old son, on his third school suspension of the year, this one for something quite serious, probable theft, to meander about alone while you and your girlfriend went out to dinner.
You've no reason to trust him. Besides, sitting down to dinner together as a family unit is good!
Surely both the mother and father were aware of Trayvon's fight club video, of his Facebook friends and talk, of his Twitter account conversations and if they weren't, shame on them, for coupled with his trouble at school, what the hell did they need to tell them that Trayvon needed adult supervision?
I see this all the time, parents who think, "Well, today we really took care of business" but they act like they should get a gold star, and the next day or the next week, they go on about their own business again, leaving the kid to his own devices again.
Ach! I'm sick of it. Sick of hip-hop culture, sick of people screaming "profiling," (hey, as if teens of all generations and colors haven't been "profiled" by adults), sick of lazy-ass parents who never should have had kids, sick of the Sharptons of the world, sick of politicians who are too cowardly to speak truth, sick, sick, sick.
Poor George. Reminds me in a way of the story of Billy Budd--some crazy circumstances just screw peole.
When it was looking as if GZ was a big, bad, evil murderer, LaRaza and other groups ran from him.
ReplyDeleteAs facts of his life come out and as his attorney continues to make Angela Corey look like the panderer she is, and as the facts of the case come to be known more and more, will Hispanic groups claim him as one of their own?
I don't know if Obama is a pardo but he's a tardo.
ReplyDeleteWhy I stand with George Zimmerman
ReplyDelete"Section 8 housing bringing black crime to what was once a quiet Jewish town."
ReplyDeleteI just KNEW the link would lead to my home town. My youngest cousin still attends school there, and I hear that the quality of education has gone down significantly. The low cost housing parts of town, including section 8, had been around for a really long time. Yet, crime wasn't a big concern a decade ago when they were filled with elderly Jews and newly arrived Korean, Thai, Romanian, Bulgarian and Russian families. I used to push my little siblings in a stroller exactly where this crime occurred when I was in early middle school. It was a really safe area. My grandma still lives a 5 minute walk away from that spot. This is very upsetting, but not unexpected. Every time I visit, the place seems dirtier and louder than the time before. God, I remember when WE were considered dirty and loud...
what Fred Reed wrote in column #516... obscure, but available via google
ReplyDeleteWow - and I thought that 489 and even 514 had been pretty rough.
But 516 might be even more bleak.
What really caused the financial crisis (Wall St walked off with securitization sans regulation)
ReplyDelete"So Zimmerman basically looks like an angel."
ReplyDeleteYes, but he still killed someone on the way home from 7-11.
I've seen Dershowitz twice in the last two days giving inteviews. He believe the special prosecutor, Angela Corey should get herself an attorney for what she did in bringing a piece of crap in affidavit form.
ReplyDeleteHe flat out says (we know this but it's nice to hear it said aloud)she was appointed to arrest GZ and she did so by not presenting in the affidavit the evidence in his favor, which is required of the prosecutor.
I wonder if either NBC or ABC have had him on.

"Yes, but he still killed someone on the way home from 7-11."
ReplyDeleteAnd.....?
"When it was looking as if GZ was a big, bad, evil murderer, LaRaza and other groups ran from him."
ReplyDeleteNot all of us--not those of us that haven't been co-opted by idiot liberal elites. Zimmerman looks just like my brother, and I've seen through the media bullshit on this case since the beginning. I'm glad someone's finally starting to poke holes in The Narrative. Zimmerman better walk -- he's been put through enough as it is.
"Yes, but he still killed someone on the way home from 7-11"
ReplyDeleteTruth, it doesn't matter whether the person who is smashing your head into the pavement has just been to 7-11, JCPenny, Hot Topic or Mom's&Pop's Sex Toys Shop. The stores patronized by your attacker aren't very relevant in the context of the attack and its consequences. However, the attack itself is very relevant when considering its direct outcome. And, yes, good people sometimes hurt others, even fatally, when fighting for their lives.
So it turns out George Zimmerman is African American. Unbelievable.
ReplyDeleteZimmerman looks like Fred Armison as Obama.
ReplyDelete"Truth, it doesn't matter whether the person who is smashing your head into the pavement has just been to 7-11,"
ReplyDeleteThere is no context for what happened before he a couple of scratches on the back of his head.
"In general, he comes across as a classic victim of hip-hop, the kind of kid who would have been okay if pop culture wasn't constantly telling him to act like a thug."

It's interesting to ponder when American culture succumbed to "cool." Was it "Rebel Without a Cause" or just money in the pockets of the young?
It really depressed me to see the clips of the President of the United States doing that ridiculous "cool" stuff on a stupid show.
I thought the Clinton sax thing would lead to this, but the office has sunk even further.
I don't need a "cool" President pandering his to kids who want to be "cool." I need an effective President, and if he's a throwback to the Fifties in behavior, that's just fine with me.
"Cool" is fine for kids as long as the behavior stays lawful (which it hasn't), but when adults strive for "it" you've got one sick puppy of a society.
He's already on the blogroll but, Mr Racehist posts about someone wanting whole genome sequencing to go away, likely for fear of eugenics, against children, immigrants, and so on.
ReplyDelete"So Zimmerman basically looks like an angel."
ReplyDeleteYes, but he still killed someone on the way home from 7-11.
Weak, Truth, very weak. Angels can defend themselves from potentially murderous thugs too.
ReplyDeleteBTW, to their credit, AoSHQ is running an important new story about the recycling of these ancient tactics: "...kind of like how the Romans used to conquer little villages in the Mediterranean: they’d go into little Turkish towns somewhere, they’d find the first five guys they’d run into, and they’d crucify them..."
The problem is that the original author is ignorant. They were not Turkish towns back then.
My theory is that blacks today have the same spot in the US social spectrum as slaveowners had circa 1860.
ReplyDeleteBack to the drawing board, please.
"Weak, Truth, very weak. Angels can defend themselves from potentially murderous thugs too."
ReplyDeleteAngels generally don't assault cops.
Maya:
ReplyDeleteZimmerman unquestionably killed Martin--that much at least isn't in question. But I think Steve had it right earlier--whether this qualifies as self defense or not depends on a bunch of fine details of both the case and the law that probably nobody here knows all that well. Whether Zimmerman is a fine fellow otherwise or not doesn't matter for the questionof whether or not his killing of Martin qualifies as self defense. Similarly, whether Martin was a choir boy on his way home from praying the rosary all night, or a wannabe gangster planning his next crime inhis head doesn't matter much for the criminal case. That's going to come down to available evidence and exactly what's required to be able to claim self defe se after you've shot someone.
It does matter for countering the MSM propaganda. But the biggest lesson to remember from this is tha tthe next time the MSM whips up a lynch mob, we should assume they have their facts about as straight as they did for Zimmerman.
So his great grandfather was black huh? Always makes me think of the MadTV skit Octoroon Date http://youtu.be/344qvsnAJsI "Once you go Octoroon, you'll be wanting more soon!"

Wow. Just wow.
Zim is a big liberal - throne under the liberal bus.
ReplyDeleteBoo fricken hoo.
Maybe after this episode of his life Zim will turn over a new leaf and redouble his efforts at being a good liberal! He'll go to Africa to do stuff with starving children and so on.
Truth: Angels generally don't assault cops
ReplyDeleteTruth, you disappoint me. I've always liked you here and hence expected certain degree of intellectual honesty. But you now act not much better than Al Sharpton now. Truth for you, Truth:
1. A charge in the assault is not the same as conviction.
2. The charge against GZ was dropped.
3. The charge was dropped because there was no physical assault actually taking place.
A lesson I learned from you today: even intelligent, well-adjusted and educated blacks will lie through their teeth to the end of it when it comes to racial matters. Conclusion: other things being equal, it makes statistical sense to doubt anything a black person says. Thank you, Truth, for contributing your bit to the racial animosity in this country (damn you).
Despite having been arrested on a felony charge of assaulting a cop, Zimmerman legally carried a gun. On his own initiative he took steps that - somewhat predictably -led to a confrontation. Unless you are a cop following a young black is very likely to get them to run/aggressively confront you. Or both.
ReplyDeleteThe Zimmermans of this world should not be allowed to play cop while carrying a gun. Leave police work to the police.
I never realized how soothing it could be for an article to actually explicitly say the race of the suspects. Take heed journalists!
ReplyDeleteCorey was born and raised in Jacksonville, Florida, where she attended Englewood High School. Corey is of Arabic (Syrian) descent.[3] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angela_Corey

ReplyDeleteBe a victim! Don't protect yourself! Sacrifice yourself on the altar of white liberal guilt!
Yeah, no thanks. Go ahead and slit your throat when accosted by youths. I've got something for them, and for the Truths of the world as well.
Zimmerman is as black as Obama's children would be had he married, say, Bernadette Dohrn.
ReplyDeleteGilbert Pinfold.
The problem is that the original author is ignorant. They were not Turkish towns back then.
ReplyDeleteRead the original article - AoSHQ linked to Weasel Zippers which linked to Heritage - the quote is from a petty tyrant at the Environmental Protection Agency, describing how he wants to use the EPA to destroy America.
Seen from this angle, that's quite a prognathous face.
ReplyDelete>low-level ethnic cleansing and ethnic warfare has characterized the Black underclass since the WWII years[...] rap is driven by the changes in Black culture towards hyper violence and thuggery<
ReplyDeleteWhat changes? H.L. Mencken wrote about the frequent "Aframerican razor-parties" in which black neighborhoods "ran with blood" in Baltimore at the turn of the last century. That was his beat as a young reporter. (Quotes here are from his "Days" books.)
"The Zimmermans of this world should not be allowed to play cop while carrying a gun. Leave police work to the police."
ReplyDeleteBut then he might be dead or severely handicapped... unless that is what you wanted. Of course it is.
Thanks to technology, video cameras are now effective, cheap, and concealable. Soon they will be ubiquitous. I live in an upper-middle class neighborhood where a growing number of houses are wired up already. Every new house that is build has at least 4 cameras on their property and every time there is break in 10 more houses are retrofitted. There are even cameras hidden in bird houses and in trees that view the street at the choke points. The cost is now dirt cheap. $500 will buy four decent infrared cameras that record pictures clear enough to be able to identify faces and license plates.
ReplyDeleteNot only do these cameras record faces but they record the time of the break in. Since most petty criminals don’t live in upper crust suburbs (drugged out teenagers aside) and walking around would attract too much attention they drive their cars somewhere close to where they intend to break in. This makes is super easy to cross check with the cameras that record license plates which makes tracking them down a snap. The close knit community becomes abuzz when there is a crime and any witnesses who were around at the time come out of the woodwork quickly. It is like catching fish in a barrel. Right now it is up to each homeowner to set up the cameras on his or her property but there is a greater push to set up communal cameras at the choke points. It works better in neighborhoods where there are a limited number of roads in and out but with the drop in cost pretty soon they will be everywhere.
When there is a positive identification, a time, a license plate, and possibly witnesses it obligates the police to make an arrest. Normally they would prefer to eating doughnuts than investigating break-ins but they really don’t have a choice when 250 affluent homeowners know who the criminal is, what was stolen, etc.
My question is what will the next step be? If the police do not follow up will the neighbors start a data base of perpetrators? Will this be shared on the internet? Will facial recognition software become an app on a cell phone where criminals will instantly be recognized? Neighborhood watch is just beginning. Get ready.
You may be too optimistic about the prospects for Trayvon Martin. I have had a little experience with black teens like him.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was a recent graduate with a degree in psychology I found that I was presumptively qualified to be a Youth Guidance Counselor. This really a kind of prison guard. The city government wanted "counselors" with degrees in psychology or sociology but the facility administration really just wanted guys who were big and athletic. The administrator looked for football players - particularly interior linemen. I got the job when I showed him my heavyweight judo medal.
I used to stand around completely still and listen to the kids talk. If you don't say anything they forget you're there. Their talk was chilling.
These particular kids were mostly black and Hispanic teens. We also had young kids who were locked up locally when their mothers were sent in state prison. Those were the "good little kids". This day however I overheard some of the "bad big kids".
What struck me as little more than a youngster myself, was that they were so self aware. They knew why they were behind bars and they knew that they would soon "graduate" to San Quentin. They fully accepted that they were going to spend much of their lives in the pokey.
Liberal orthodoxy believes in programs like "scared straight". You get a hardened ex-con to speak at a high school about what prison is really like and the kids straighten up and fly right.
Not so.
Those kind of programs provide some work for ex-cons I suppose, but the kids in my experience not only aren't scared they fully expect to be incarcerated. Indeed they see this as a normal part of their life cycle. They think they deserve it. The kids I overheard weren't bitter and resentful. They were doomed, they knew it, and they accepted it.
Trayvon certainly knew that he was likely to die violently.

The prosecution not only apparently overcharged but also keeps making breathtaking pre-trial concessions. The latest is its admission that Zimmerman used no racial slurs during his "crime." Other concessions were that the gun was fired at very close range and that *they don't really know who started the fight* (this, in a stand-your-ground case).
ReplyDeleteSo what could the prosecution's case possibly be? In Florida, Murder 2 requires proof of "depraved" mind. This could mean "indifference to human life" = Zimmerman either fired the gun too soon (he should've waited until he was dead) or he shouldn't've walked around with a gun in his neighborhood (regardless of concealed-carry). That won't hold any water - unless the jurors are on the OJ-juror level. Alternatively, "depraved" mind might mean "racial profiling" = Zimmerman was a "racist." This would require the prosecution to sift through his past to see if he ever used the N-word or whatever. (His past, because he used no slurs in the Trayvon incident.) The Reuters story seems to be a move in Zimmerman's defense: the guy is a fully (?) vetted unracist by heritage, upbringing, and inclination, therefore how could he have the "depraved" mind of a "racist"?
I bet the prosecution will base its entire case on Zimmerman's alleged crimethink. And if Zimmerman's soul checks out okay, then crimethink = racial profiling and nothing more.
Accordingly, the best way to defend Zimmerman is to discuss, defend, and argue for profiling. This will be a profiling case. So start seeding the blogosphere with your pro-profiling arguments.
Yup said . . .
ReplyDeleteZimmerman legally carried a gun. On his own initiative he took steps that - somewhat predictably -led to a confrontation. Unless you are a cop following a young black is very likely to get them to run/aggressively confront you.
I like how you magically re-assign the blame for black male violence to innocent people following them.
the kind of kid who would have been okay if pop culture wasn't constantly telling him to act like a thug.
ReplyDeleteThis described most of black america before 1986.
Liberals need to figure out if Blacks are animals, or humans. If they're animals, with no agency, and thus are better spoken of as such (i.e., "in terms of how they're very likely to run at or aggressively confront" people), say so. And don't act surprised when people bring zoos, cattle prods, nets, etc., into the picture.
If they're human, stop talking about them like they're animals.
Truth, you are once again handling business with these knuckleheads - good job.
ReplyDeleteWhiskey said: "It is NOT rap driven, rather rap is driven by the changes in Black culture towards hyper violence and thuggery in general."
Whiskey, I agree with this. My personal belief is that rap music since the early 1990s onward - with its gangsta lifestyle and negative images of Black females sexuality - is a result of a Cointelpro operation by the Federal government against Black people.
Rap during its rise during the late 1980s and early 1990s - led by Public Enemy - was focused on Black self-empowerment and uplift. The elite elements in our country - which seek to keep EVERYONE in a state of oppression and confusion - worked with the entertainment industry (which is an arm of the NWO) to replace positive Black rap imagery with groups like NWA and the record label Death Row.
The rap Cointelpro operation, along with other such operations against positive Black politicians, helped to develop a Black population today that consists of a large percentage of simple-minded, low thinking Negroes. Today's hip-hop cultural is a product of that mindset.
As Truth stated, none of this absolves Zimmerman of his criminal act - killing an unarmed youth minding his own business.
"Despite having been arrested on a felony charge of assaulting a cop, Zimmerman legally carried a gun...."
ReplyDeleteIt's amazing that liberals are willing to deprive people of their constitutional rights on grounds that they would otherwise be screaming bloody murder about if applied to any right other than gun ownership. Imagine if Fl. had a law stating that you were deprived of your right to vote if you had been ARRESTED on a felony charge. Until conviction, those arrested are presumed innocent and cannot be permanently deprived of any right.
"The problem is that the original author is ignorant. They were not Turkish towns back then."

ReplyDeleteI have read articles attributing black drug use, black violence and general low-functioning, even black-on-white rape as always, everywhere and ultimately traceable to dem white debbils. In so many words, blacks lack moral agency.
When a pit bull launches an awful attack, we may be angry and retaliate but we aren't personally disappointed in the beast. Pit bulls lack moral agency. Too many such incidents, and we ultimately decide pit bulls just aren't worth the trouble to have around.
Albertosaurus:
ReplyDeleteMy mom used to work in what was effecively a state reform school, as a teacher. Her stories sound a lot like this--a whole bunch of those kids had pretty much all their family members either behind bars or likely to return to prison soon. If you take the seond or third generation child of criminals on all sides, and raise them in a criminal household in a steeped in crime neighborhood, you've got the perfect overlap between nature and nurture. It's sort of the opposite side of those exclusive private schools where the daughter of a cardiologist and a tax attorney gets a 1:4 teacher to student ratio surrounded by intellectual stimulation, when she's not being whisked off to museums by her MS-holding nanny.
Just had a thought: Trayvon was pretty far into the gangsta life and connected with lots of wanna be gangstas. Apparently, he was not un-intelligent. So, he must have known what a neighborhood watch-man was and that they were present in his new neighborhood and that they, unlike a randomly chose Florida Resident, were sure to be un-armed.
ReplyDeleteIf he was in the mood for a good beat-down of a white authority figure the door lay open, in his mind anyway.
His reported last words "OK, you have got it" or "OK, you have got one" are quite enigmatic unless he was already thinking about whether or not this short silly white dude might be armed. If he had indeed consciously chosen GZ for a beat down thinking he would be gun-less, it makes perfect sense.

ReplyDeleteQuit spreading misinformation about pit bulls. They are lovely, sensitive, trainable, eager to please dogs. You need another metaphor to get your point across.

ReplyDeleteMaya, please, don't be a moron. Your logic is the same as the one liberals use when arguing that blacks are not at all violent. Hint: compare number of people that were mauled by poodles and pit bulls.
"none of this absolves Zimmerman of his criminal act - killing an unarmed youth minding his own business."
ReplyDeleteJumping a guy and beating him is not minding your own business. If someone asks you what you are doing or even calls 911 on you, are you going to jump him and and start beating him?
Martin was not minding his own business. Zimmerman committed no crime by just reporting the guy and watching him.
Mencken played pretty fast and loose with the truth. He also wrote about prostitutes all making lots of money and retiring comfortably with wealthy businessmen as the norm for that industry. So his 'razor party' anecdata should be taken saltily.
ReplyDelete"1. A charge in the assault is not the same as conviction.
ReplyDelete2. The charge against GZ was dropped.
3. The charge was dropped because there was no physical assault actually taking place."
Wrong, the charge was dropped from a felony to a misdemeanor, which means they believed he did it.
" the kind of kid who would have been okay if pop culture wasn't constantly telling him to act like a thug."
ReplyDeleteExcellent.
If it offers to bite a human, it ain't really a pit bull. Being inoffensive to humans, while being aggressive as hell to other dogs, used to be part of the breed standard. In the old dog fights each dog was carefully washed before the fight by the other dog's handler, and was required to stand quietly for that. This was to guarantee absence of drugs and poisons on the coats of the dogs.
ReplyDeleteDogs these days suffer the same problem as humans these days; everybody breeds for appearance instead of behavior, except some seem to breed for bad behavior.
Maya, please, don't be a moron. Your logic is the same as the one liberals use when arguing that blacks are not at all violent. Hint: compare number of people that were mauled by poodles and pit bulls.
ReplyDeleteSounds more like you're taking an issue with the ability to maul, which APBTs have, and (toy) poodles don't, with the issue of temperament.
I don't know poodles well enough to guess, but generally speaking, yes, APBTs have better temperaments than toy breeds.
H.L. Mencken wrote about the frequent "Aframerican razor-parties" in which black neighborhoods "ran with blood" in Baltimore at the turn of the last century.
ReplyDeleteWhen you look through newspapers from the late 19th century, there are frequent reports of razor fights among blacks. A razor, being a necessary grooming tool for a man, was not subject to the same restrictions as other weapons, and its flatness made it easy to conceal.
Oh, and further, to Anon at 5:48:
ReplyDeleteI've never had a bad time with a pit bull, there there are three breeds which really do frighten me:
1. Dobermann Pinscher
2. Rottweiler
3. German Police Dog (now called "German Shepherd" for PC reasons)
What do these three breeds have in common?
1. They were specifically bred, and usually trained, to go after humans preferentially.
2. They were all invented by Germans.
Like Alvin York and Erskine Childers, I really do not care very much for Germans even when they are not being Nazis.
Here's what I want, you:
English Mastiff, any day.
I think it's quite true

ReplyDeleteFinding yourself on the ground, with an assailant on top of you, beating your head into the pavement, is not a "stand your ground case."
It's just plain old self-defense.
"Maya, please, don't be a moron. Your logic is the same as the one liberals use when arguing that blacks are not at all violent. Hint: compare number of people that were mauled by poodles and pit bulls."
ReplyDeleteI'm not arguing that some pit bulls are very nice dogs. I'm stating that, as a breed, they are known (to those who actually work with dogs) for eagerness to please, first and foremost, intelligence and sensitivity.
The reason they attack and bite more often than other breeds in the United States is that they are used in dog fights and as guard dogs by the lowest rank of people, by far, more often than any other breed. Dogs who are treated horrifically and trained to be violent do so more often than other dogs. big surprise. Before dog fighting became popular, pit bulls were known as nanny dogs and employed to watch small children. After vast experience with this breed, I'd say that babysitting does sound like a great fit for it. Of course, the pits who come into the shelter after being rescued from abusive situations and forced to hunt their own food are a scary bunch. That's understandable. Also, like people, dogs can get brain cancer and go nuts. And, sure, being attacked by a mentally deranged pit bull who is all muscle is a lot more dangerous than being attacked by a toy poodle. However, just as with people, psychotic episodes are very, very rare. And, statistically, psychosis is most common among spaniels and toy breeds (thank God).
You should really try doing your own research instead of relying on the mainstream media and popular culture to inform you ;)

ReplyDeleteThat's all great except, Public Enemy SUCKED, and NWA was one of the first rap groups that DIDN'T suck.
The Beastie Boys put out better albums than Public Enemy did.
ReplyDelete" the kind of kid who would have been okay if pop culture wasn't constantly telling him to act like a thug."

Truth agrees with Derbyshire: stay away from Black people!
So it turns out George Zimmerman is African American. Unbelievable.
ReplyDeleteHe always appeared to have a bit of African ancestry.
And, sure, being attacked by a mentally deranged pit bull who is all muscle is a lot more dangerous than being attacked by a toy poodle.
ReplyDeleteNo, Maya, still wrong. You sound like a typical unreformed liberal. Here is another hint for you: Toy poodles never (as in NEVER EVER, EVER) attack people.
@Svigor: and (toy) poodles don't, with the issue of temperament
ReplyDeleteHave you ever seen a standard poodle? They can be as big as smallish doberman pinschers. Their teeth are actually bigger and sharper than dobermans'. But the number of people mauled by standard poodles is exactly the same as those mauled by toy poodles - zero.
As many miniture breeds are purported to be, I can attest firsthand that our toy poodles was very high strung and bit everyone in my family, some multiple times.
ReplyDeleteIn virtually every case, it was a nip and rarely went deep into the skin.
The one large (unminiurized) grey hunting poodle I met was very calm in comparison.
Still, statistically any unknown bit pull off the street is going to present a much greater danger to you than any yapping toy poodle will.

That aside - and?
No, Maya, still wrong. You sound like a typical unreformed liberal. Here is another hint for you: Toy poodles never (as in NEVER EVER, EVER) attack people.
ReplyDeleteBullshit. The assaults just get kicked down to misdemeanors.
I bet cocker spaniels attack people at a higher rate than APBTs do.
"No, Maya, still wrong. You sound like a typical unreformed liberal. Here is another hint for you: Toy poodles never (as in NEVER EVER, EVER) attack people."
ReplyDeleteDarling, "liberal" only works as an insult if you have something to back it up and can support your position. For example, when Lily Allen started her concert by yelling, "George W. Bush is a cunt", it came out rather pathetically because she couldn't recall anything Bush had actually done, or any of his political views. She just knew that he was bad, and that cool people weren't supposed to like him.
By repeatedly calling me a liberal as some kind of a shaming technique, you betray yourself as someone who uses political affiliation as a sort of a clique where you could gain a sense of belonging and self-importance that comes with it. Perhaps you could be better fulfilled by supporting a sports team or obsessing over a band.
Your position on dogs is similar to your political stance. You repeat it over and over again without attempting to back it up or respond to direct points, and you defend it mindlessly, simply because it's yours.
As someone who has worked the reception desk at a vet's office, volunteered countless hours at an animal rescue and fostered many dogs, I can assure you that poodles, indeed, can be very aggressive, specifically, the toy breads. Pit bulls are in the category of dogs who are least likely to attack their own families. Again, some pits aren't 'right" after being rescued from dog fighting rings, and since they are often used as guard/protection dogs, pit bulls are also known to attack intruders and people violent towards a family member who is in obvious distress. Otherwise, these dogs are notoriously docile when dealing with humans. This isn't top secret information. Why don't you read up on it?
Zimmerman looks about as African American as Robin Wells, but more African American than Wentworth Miller.
ReplyDeleteHonestly, to me, he never looked like anything other than a mestizo. If I were making a movie about going to South America, I'd cast him as a random Bolivian plumber or a Colombian taxi driver. Maybe I'd save a few dollars and cast him as both since he blends in so well as a background Latin American guy, that no one would notice.
Orson Welles was attacked by a razor-wielding black man - and rescued by another black man (actor Jack Carter) - in Harlem in the 1930s (according to Welles biographer Simon Callow). (Carter was an interesting guy; click the link.)
ReplyDelete>poodles, indeed, can be very aggressive, specifically, the toy breads.<
ReplyDeleteHa, another Orson Welles anecdote here! In his last years, Welles owned a toy poodle named "Kiki." He took her everywhere, including into restaurants.
By all accounts, "Kiki" was extraordinarily hostile to everyone except Welles. In a horrific incident related by eyewitness Gore Vidal, "Kiki" once menacingly growled at a waiter and...bit his sleeve. Yes, I can see how toy poodles are more dangerous than pit bulls. It all makes sense now....
"Yes, I can see how toy poodles are more dangerous than pit bulls. It all makes sense now...."
ReplyDeleteI never said they were more dangerous, but that they are, on average, a lot more aggressive than pit bulls. Obviously, a larger, more muscular dog like, say, labrador retriever can do a lot more damage than a pekingese. All being equal, bigger things are more dangerous, in general. For example, if something was flying towards me at 100m/s, I'd much rather it be a bullet than a refrigerator. But since all things aren't equal, I feel absolutely no anxiety about having that rather large unit in my kitchen, just as I feel no anxiety around any of my foster pit bulls, past or present.
ReplyDeleteIt's been eye-opening to witness how depressed Truth has become by the facts of this case steadily rehabilitating Zimmerman and casting a pall over the media image of Saint Tray Tray.
Truth's "someone on the way home from 7-11" has the makings of an instant classic of the hate-whitey genre. Lol. Desperation+.
"Truth's "someone on the way home from 7-11" has the makings of an instant classic of the hate-whitey genre."
ReplyDeleteThe critics must be including a lot in that Genre. It's like "film noir."
Hmmm. So it looks like "No_Limit_Nigga" had decided to beat to death Florida's own Hispanic Dudley Do-Right for being too nosy. Unfortunately for him, the latter was packing heat, so there's now one less Trayvon in the world.
ReplyDeleteFrankly, this is almost what I'd half-expected to find from very early on, but it's nice to have my educated guesses confirmed...
As a small kid, I got bit by a standard poodle. My dad's reaction was to smack me in the ass for going near a strange dog, then clean the wound with something that stang really bad. The dog's owner told my father that it was vaccinated, so that was the end of that. I WAS bothering the dog. Today the dog would be euthanized and the owner sued.
ReplyDelete@ Justthisguy
ReplyDeleteIt seems that the three German breeds of dogs that you're so terrified of have been classified as being amongst the ten most intelligent. see here

ReplyDeleteWhen I was 4, a puppy of a large breed was bothering me, so i decided to run away from him. We were spending the summer out in the countryside, so he was probably a shepherd, which would explain why he bit me on the legs over and over again as he joyfully chased me. The puppy's owner apologized, asked if we needed anything and scolded the puppy. My mother, disinfected and bandaged the bites on my legs, apologized to the neighbors for my screams bringing the village to a halt for a few minutes and explained to me that if you run from a dog, it will chase you. In that time and place, people understood that these things happen and didn't blow it out of proportion.
Five summers later, in some rural resort village, I went to visit a friend at her cousin's house. I got near the door without noticing a big German Shepherd chained to a nearby stoop because he was resting in the bushes. He tackled me, and I still have one bite mark on my side and one as a sort of a tramp stamp. My friend's aunt cleaned and bandaged me, served me some tea and ice cream and took me home. She and her husband apologized to my parents, showed the dog's shots record and begged to not report it. It was obvious that the dog was merely protecting his home, and that they shouldn't leave him alone outside anymore. I went to the hospital for some just in case shots, and that was the end of it.
Heck, even 8 years ago in suburban Chicago, my Chocolate Lab bit the neighbor boy because he was being too loud and active in her back yard, and she was too old and grumpy to deal with it. But since we were all immigrants on my street, the dog was allowed the few years she had left. I don't remember if the boy was from the Argentinian or from the Persian Jewish side of our fence, but his parents accepted mother's apology and the check to cover the kid's stitches at the ER. The neighbor didn't stop coming over, and my brother was still welcome in their house.
I'm surprised that people who freak out over common childhood dog related incidents allow their kids to ride bikes, skate, ski or play sports. Or maybe they don't...
"It seems that the three German breeds of dogs that you're so terrified of have been classified as being amongst the ten most intelligent. see here"
ReplyDeleteYour source lists pit bulls as of above average intelligence. And when I clicked on the breed and went to the article dedicated to pit bulls, they were described as people oriented animals that make good family pets and are excellent around children.
