Euphemisms guide for parents of foreign students

After the tragic murder of two Chinese USC students, their parents are suing the college on the grounds that USC's marketing materials described the campus as being in an "urban" location. In China "urban" means good things (fewer pig in street, no have to bend over all day in rice paddy), while "suburban" sounds like "below urban" to literal-minded Asians. We should create a dictionary of American euphemisms for their safety. I'll start:

Urban -- 1. Antonym of Urbane.  2. All right, try hard to picture the Latin Quarter on the Left Bank in Paris, where students have congregated for a millennium. Okay, got that? Well, it's not like that.

Vibrant -- 1. Boring.  2. Terrifying.

White bread -- 1. Where Asian parents want their children to live. 2. Incomprehensible ethnic slur.

  20. I did my grad work in a quiet peaceful college in a rural setting.

One of the grad students from China who was new there was paranoid that there was danger lurking around every turn. He told me he felt safe when people were around, and that in China, it is the rural areas that are dangerous- the big cities are well policed and monitored.

I tried to convince him (with I think at least a little success) that it is the opposite in the US.

  24. Words mean different things to different people. For some, 'liberal' means free market. For others, it means statism.
Same with 'urban'. For some, it means yuppies. For some, it means Negroes.
This lawsuit has or should have no legs to stand on... cuz everyone would be suing everyone. I mean we are surrounded all around by euphemism.

This is especially funny coming from Chinese, who have a long history of using all sorts of euphemisms. I mean 'great leap forward' indeed. Chinese, with their culture of bogus politeness, have a long history of prettifying things with fancy or misleading words.

And if the Chinese should be suing anyone, it's their own people for making all sorts of dangerous products but selling them as safe, making all sorts of bogus medicine but selling them as real medicine.

But I guess it's more lucrative and safe to sue Americans. It's like blacks should complain more about bad blacks, but it's more lucrative to bitch about whites.
White people are the only people generous to listen to complaints and give accusers a chance in court

    ReplyDelete
  25. Euphemisms galore.. Should we be suing?

    1. Affirmative action.

    2. Same sex marriage.

    3. Undocumented immigrant.

    4. Tax credit.

    5. Teens and youths.

    6. Inner city.

    7. Misguided.

    8. Uninhibited. (In reality, CRAZY blacks).

  26. I spend a fair ammt of time at USC. The administration did a great job building a wall around the campus with very high security.

As such I think the campus itself is exceptionally safe

the problem is that grad students tend to live off campus and subject themselves to the terrible crime of the surrounding neighborhood.

It seems to me that the solution is very simple - build a few high rises similar to what you see on the Wilshire corridor in Westwood - 50 story high buildings - build these INSIDE the walls, so that the students that live in them are 100% safe. If the University would only build enough attractive housing and restaurants and bars INSIDE the campus walls, then students would not venture outside the campus walls and they would be safe. This method would probably dramatically increase the prestige of USC an attract even more students, and it would help USC avoid the humiliation that comes from having students murdered. Seems like a win win

Can anyone with more knowledge than me explain why USC hasn't implemented my plan yet ?

Actually that show got or gets away with a large amount of racist humor because Tina Fey is always very careful to emphasize what an SWPL leftist she truly is at heart. Same with Larry David's Curb Your Enthusiasm. So long as at all other times they make a big song and dance about what a true believer leftist they are, a white celebrity can actually get away with racist humor in the 2012 USA.

    Steve,
Did you see the L.A. Times article on it ? I think it was in Section 2, above the fold. They showed two pictures of a couple Mexican drug gang members(in an unrelated story) right below the Asian grad students story. Then they screened down the Mexican's photos so they looked more like White men. A casual observer just glancing at the paper might be led to believe that two White guys pulled the trigger on the Asian students. I'm sure that's the desired effect, at the Times.

This fits in with my idea of how the Times thinks. They only want to depict White people as bad. If you're a person of color, they want to protect you. A person from a distant city subscribing to the Times by mail before moving here, might well think that all criminals in L.A. are White.
I'm going to say it. The USA in this era is one of the top degenerate societies of all time.

    It's funny because it's true.

Also, urban Chinese are way wimpier than peasants. A Texan I used to hang out with in China once said "the heaviest thing they lift is money."

In the country, on the other hand, the people are frighteningly strong, even when they're small. Urban Chinese are particularly terrified of strapping northern peasants, who tend to man the construction brigades by day and drink baijiu at night in cheap gambling establishments.

When a group of dongbei (NE China) migrant laborers gets out of hand, watch out!

It may sound odd to Americans, but I bet a wealthy Shanghai or Hong Kong Chinese would be safer in a poor, Pacific NW logging town full of huge Nordic Americans than in some poor rural town in NE China. Over here, we really only see a thin slice of the Chinese people.

  57. racism = any observation of race that does not promote the narrative of "whites bad, all other races good."

an honest discussion about race = a discussion in which black participants get to tell all their grievances against whites, but in which white participants do the same only at their peril. This is a classic trap not only for foreign college students but also for white students coming from rural areas. They have no idea that, as a white, you're not supposed to do anything in these situations except agree with what blacks say. Yes, it's pretty tacky to give your child a new luxury car for college. In fact, it's nouveau riche, which of course is what these students' families are. If they were the children of American new money, there wouldn't be much sympathy, but the tendency of upper middle class Americans to give extra leeway to foreigners (as discussed on the other campus diversity thread) may outweigh the snobbery.

Another one for the euphemism guide:

"In transition," as in "a neighborhood in transition" = formerly impoverished, dangerous hellhole now being overrun by yuppies. Probably safe by day but still unsafe by night, despite all the good restaurants.

Note that "in transition" is not the same as "changing," as in "the neighborhood is changing." The latter nearly always means that the area is deteriorating fast and you should keep you children away from it.

I'm guessing yet another incident of mormon on mormon violence
    "

In this case, it would appear that the "youths" weren't who you think they were.

First of all, the restaurant where the incident took place is an Irish establishment located in an area that's home to a large Irish population (the South Side Irish diaspora). When news of the beat-down first broke, it was reported that the diners who were attacked had identified themselves to restaurant staff as being members of an "Irish heritage group."

But today it's being reported that the diners were part of a skinhead group, and that their black-clad attackers were anti-racist anarchists (at the moment, Chicago is full of anarchists who've set up shop for this weekend's NATO summit).

So, if news reports are true, this attack appears to be a case of violent anti-racist SWPL anarchists beating purportedly Irish skinheads in an Irish restaurant in a heavily-Irish neck of the woods.

But it doesn't appear to involve the vibrant "youths" you're thinking of (although, in addition to being heavily Irish, the area in question is also heavily Palestinian -- so its possible that the attackers could have included Arab "youths").

BTW, Chicago isn't known for having a large Mormon community. But you seem to be aware of that, as evidenced by your "mormon on mormon violence" quip.

Truth, however, is sometimes stranger than fiction (especially in Chicago, which, as iSteve knows, is probably weirder than California -- the so-called capital of weirdness). The cover of the current issue of Sports Illustrated features a high school basketball phenom from Simeon High School on the South Side of Chicago (alma matter of NBA star Derrick Rose) named Jabari Parker, who's widely considered the best high school basketball player since Lebron James.

Here's the twist: Parker is a devout Mormon who's said to be seriously considering postponing his basketball career in order to decamp on a Mormon mission.

Anti-racist SWPL anarchists (assuming they weren't Arab Muslims) beating purportedly Irish skinheads in an Irish restaurant and devout Mormon high school basketball basketball stars from the hood . . . only in Chicago (especially the South Side).

Truth, however, is sometimes stranger than fiction (especially in Chicago, which, as iSteve knows, is probably weirder than California -- the so-called capital of weirdness)

Florida became the capital of weirdness a generation ago. But the whole country has become weird except maybe North Dakota.

Sailer, for a guy who concerns himself with cultural and racial differences you are quaintly naive about the Chinese and Asians in general.

I've never seen pigs in the street of even county-level districts anywhere in China.

I really don't find Chinese to be that literal-minded - they often complain that Westerners do not comprehend irony in Mandarin. Even if they were, however, there is a perfectly workable translation of "suburb" into Chinese - "jiaoqu."

I think the problem here is that the parents of foreign exchange students were completely unaware of some of the heinous violence to be found in American ghetto environs.

The Ted comment you posted certainly got my attention. Reading about viziers and bolshiviks makes me feel undereducated.
Here it is again for all to enjoy.

Can we have a game to show how 3 million + white Europeans were enslaved by Muslims? Or a game to demonstrate the blood tax on white christian children by the sulton? Or one where a spanish town under moorish rule had to give up their most beautiful virgin girls to be sex slaves of viziers?

How about a game that demonstrates the effect of cultural marxism in stifling free speech?
Or one were secular humanists (you know like ted talks ) destroy churches and gun down clergy for not renouncing Christ, as was done by the republican fighters in Spain and Bolshiviks in Russia.

Here's another fun one: College Human Rights Commission: where you have to go in front a virtual committee and renounce your 'hate speech'

How about crowd sourcing to get anyone who speaks the truth about the failure of multiculturalism to be fired from their jobs, like Buchanan, Naomi Rilely, John Derbyshire, and so on...

But keep patting yourselves on the back about how 'smart', 'tolerant' and 'bright' you all are. Pathetic.

"Florida became the capital of weirdness a generation ago. But the whole country has become weird except maybe North Dakota."

Florida became the capital of white trash dysfunction. People may call that weirdness, but it's really something else -- degeneracy.

Chicago is weird, but not really degenerate. It's just full of all kinds of quirks.

Classic California weirdness was the byproduct of the state being a magnet for liberal nuttiness. For generations, the nation's freak-a-zoids gravitated to the Left Coast.

Florida weirdness, by contrast, is the byproduct of crystal meth.

Aside from wealthy parts of south Florida (some of which are plenty weird on their own), Florida is a magnet for the nation's white trash masses. Most of the "weird" stories that come from Florida are really white trash stories.

Take, for example, a recent "weird Florida" experience of mine: about a month ago, yours truly had to go to Jacksonville for a couple days. On a Monday morning, I got propositioned by white trash prostitutes twice while merely going about my business in decent parts of town.

The first (toothless) white trash prostitute came up to me in a grocery store parking lot as I was getting out of the car. Again, this didn't happen in a sketchy neighborhood. The grocery store was on University Blvd. -- right around the corner from Jacksonville Beach and the Jacksonville Mayo Clinic (a decent area).

The meth-head hooker was just hanging around the parking lot, propositioning all the men who pulled up. The hooker caught me off guard, as I was going into the grocery store to get energy drinks and some gum ... not to get gummed.

The second white trash prostitute came up to me as I was pumping gas at a gas station off 95 and University Blvd. (in an office park district, not in a bad area). She was milling around the gas station parking lot and approaching all the men (nobody took her up while in the short time I was there ... not even the "undocumented" workers filling up their landscaping truck). Her meth-induced physical decay wasn't quite as advanced as that of the first hooker, but she was still an obvious tweaker.

Outside of Florida, there aren't too many parts of the country where you're likely to get propositioned by nasty meth-head white trash hookers while going about your business in perfectly reputable parts of town at 11:00 AM.

But again, that kind of Florida degeneracy is different from California weirdness or Chicago quirkiness.

"A law enforcement source Sunday said the group beaten at a Tinley Park restaurant Saturday was made up of white supremacists, and those who assaulted them were protesters attacking their beliefs.

Police had five people in custody after the attack, which occurred at The Ashford House, 7959 W. 159th St. No charges had been filed yet, and the suspects did not appear in bond court Sunday.

Tinley Park Mayor Ed Zabrocki on Sunday said police do not know if the protesters had any connection to the NATO Summit in downtown Chicago.

He said police still have 35 to 40 people to interview, and charges could come Monday.

“The guys we have in the lockup are still not talking, at least not this morning,” Zabrocki said.

Beckie Williams was among the victims Saturday. Williams, who said she lives near the Quad Cities, said her group is called the European Heritage Group and they are not white supremacists."

There's also a clash of cultures that can make parts of Florida seem "weird" or "quirky." But that's natural for a place where traditional southern culture brushes up against white trash transplant culture, oldster retiree culture, East Coast Italian culture, New York Jewish culture, Caribbean culture, South American culture, Haitian culture, gay culture, redneck culture, surfer culture, etc.

There are lots of great places in Florida. Overall, however, Florida is the kind of place that's great to visit, but where you'd might not want to live (at least not for the long-term).

It's truly a joy, though, to drive around the Miami area listening to local radio. Radio is too homogeneous in most of America. Not so in south Florida, though!

Scan the dial and you'll hear Salsa y Merengue stations, Haitian preachers riffing in Caribbean-accented French, Black and white preachers riffing in English, Top 40 stations where the on-air personalities speak in Spanglish, and urban stations where the DJ mixes blend hip hop hits of the moment, bass-heavy Miami-style hip hop, raggaeton and South Florida's timeless, ubiquitous anthem (it's not a proper Miami DJ mix without Barry White's Love Unlimited Orchestra!).

Classic California weirdness was the byproduct of the state being a magnet for liberal nuttiness. For generations, the nation's freak-a-zoids gravitated to the Left Coast.

California's historic weirdness was due to stuff like bohemians migrating to the Bay Area (as far back as Jack London's mother), transplanted Midwesterners and Southerners joining oddball religious cults and eccentric, non-scary heterosexuals like "Nature Boy" Gypsy Boots laying the groundwork for the Hippie movement.
In the era of sacred LGBT, Hipsters, IT Geeks, Mexicanization, White Flight and the leftist destruction of the CA economy there's no room for authentic weirdness in CA.

My impression about foreigners, from talking to more than a few, is that they think of the US as a hyper-violent society where death lurks behind every shadow. This, of course, is courtesy of the saturation coverage of headline incidents like Columbine, Virginia Tech, and so on, as well as Hollywood action flicks that many perceive as representative of ordinary life stateside. This lawsuit isn't about misunderstandings - it's about trying to get a settlement from USC so the parents can recover their substantial investments in their kids' educations. The amounts involved were probably slightly north of $100K in each case. Based on the fact that the victims lived in the ghetto, I'd say that the parents probably spent their life savings putting them through school, and were counting on cash flow from those kids after graduation to pay the bills.

Steve Sailer wrote: "All right, try hard to picture the Latin Quarter on the Left Bank in Paris, where students have congregated for a millennium. Okay, got that? Well, it's not like that."

The Left Bank was a pretty violent place in the mid-fifteenth century. One need only examine the criminal record, still extant at the Châtelet, of one François de Montcorbier, alias des Loges, alias Villon, alias Michel Mouton - Master of Arts of the University of Paris, also burglar, robber of church poor-boxes, murderer, and quite incidentally the greatest French poet of his day, or perhaps ever.

Riots and street affrays were commonplace. In 1452,
the lieutenant of criminal police, Jehan Bezon, deposed that "a large number of students have created great disturbances, for example by stealing and breaking up at nights with great noise the signs hanging outside houses of this town, at the same time crying, 'kill, kill!' in order that citizens should open their windows to see what was happening. They have also stolen hooks from the butchers of St.-Geneviève and abstracted fowls from St. Germain-des-Prés, and have taken away by force a young woman at Vanves... Also, they proceeded to the Halles to take the sign of the 'Spinning Sow,' but as the ladder, they say, was too short the student who climbed it to take the aforesaid 'Sow' fell to the ground and was killed..."

On the feast of St. Nicholas that year, the Paris police department had its revenge upon the students. The sergeants of the guard began by roughing upo some students, then broke into a house at the sign of St. Estienne, belonging to a priest named Andry Bresquier, then away saying mass - wrecking and looting it under their lieutenant's orders. Having sacked this house, they broke into another at the sign of St. Nicholas, smashing windows and drinking all the wine they could find; next entering the Collège du Coquerel, they found a barred door, behind which was a professor Maistre Darian, lecturing to an audience of forty students. They battered down the door, threatened the master, and carried off his pupils, marching them roughly through the streets.

All this and more may be found in D.B. Wyndham-Lewis's biography of Villon, from which the above accounts are extracted.

In fifteenth-century Paris, the Chinamen would have been no more safe than in today's Los Angeles - but might at least have had the consolation of being murdered by a more literate mob of criminals than ply their trades today in southern California. Those criminals, in their turn, stood at least a good chance of being hoicked up on the gallows of Montfaucon by that admirable public servant, the hangman of Paris - for whom, unfortunately, Los Angeles has no modern equivalent.

Their mugshots are up at the Chicago Tribune.

All of those who were arrested (including two of the diners who were attacked) live far from Chicagoland.

    From the article:

The melee Saturday at the restaurant appears to have been the work of protesters who wanted to attack a gathering of alleged white supremacists, the mayor and a law enforcement source said previously.

Tinley Park Police Chief Steve Neubauer said all five men are charged with aggravated battery, mob action and criminal damage to property. The group includes three brothers, Jason W. Sutherlin, 33, of Gosport, Ind., Cody Lee Edward Sutherlin, 23, of Bloomington, Ind., and Dylan James Sutherlin, 20, of Bloomington, Ind. Alex R. Stuck, 22, of Bloomington, Ind., and James S. Tucker, 26, of Spencer, Ind., are also charged, he said.

In bond court today, bail was set at $250,000 for Jason Sutherlin, $200,000 for Cody Sutherlin, and $175,000 for Dylan Sutherlin, Tucker and Stuck. Their next court date is set for June 12.

Two men who were with the group that was targeted during the attack were also arrested, Neubauer said. Steven Eugene Speers, 33, of Grand Forks, N.D., was wanted on a warrant from Dallas County, Texas, for possession of child pornography, he said. Francis John Gilroy Jr., 65, of West Palm Beach, Fla., is charged with unlawful possession of weapons by a felon.

In court today, prosecutors said the victims were members of the Illinois European Heritage Association. Neubauer would not discuss whether they were part of a white supremacist group.
