"Why 'illegal immigrant' is a slur"

From CNN:
Why 'illegal immigrant' is a slur
By Charles Garcia, Special to CNN
Editor's note: Charles Garcia, who has served in the administrations of four presidents, of both parties, is the CEO of Garcia Trujillo, a business focused on the Hispanic market. He was named in the book "Hispanics in the USA: Making History" as one of 14 Hispanic role models for the nation. Follow him on Twitter: @charlespgarcia. (CNN) -- Last month's Supreme Court decision in the landmark Arizona immigration case was groundbreaking for what it omitted: the words "illegal immigrants" and "illegal aliens," except when quoting other sources. The court's nonjudgmental language established a humanistic approach to our current restructuring of immigration policy.

In my orthogonal way, what caught my eye about this article was the striking "Editor's note" insisting that you'd better pay respectful attention to this guy's political opinion because he is a ... marketing consultant.

Now, you may have a tendency to treat marketing consultants' opinions as self-serving spin, but, you don't understand, this guy is a Hispanic Marketing Consultant, so you'd better listen to him. After all, we newspaper editors get almost all our opinions about immigration from Hispanic Marketing Consultants. They're the Gold Standard when you need a quote in a hurry about immigration. They always return phone calls and always tell our reporters exactly what they want to hear. So, listen up, buddy.

Look, the leadership class of America bet the country based on what Hispanic marketing consultants told us. Now, we could go around all day on whether or not that was a prudent move, but, seriously, do you expect us to to tell you, oops, we shouldn't have believed Hispanic marketing consultants without doublechecking? Of course not. We're just going to keep force-feeding you the views of Hispanic marketing consultants until nobody can remember that there's any other way to think.

  4. Diversity Is Chaos posted an interesting story about an "undocumented worker" earlier today. I believe he killed 4 people in San Francisco during his tenure in the United States via El Salvador.

Wouldn't want to hurt his feelings by calling him an illegal immigrant, ya know. I believe the father and sons he killed in a hail of bullets would agree.

That's what I seriously thought at first, but they seem truly oblivious to Garcia's glaring conflict of interest everywhere else. Maybe it's subconscious?

Reminds me of something David Simon of The Wire said about covering municipal politics in Baltimore. A local pol called up to complain about a reporter he felt wasn't up to the job:
"This guy doesn't know shit! All he does is ask questions!"

No such problem for Mr. Garcia's rubes. They know what they're supposed to know.

  10. Off topic, Steve, but have you heard about a key plot point in the new AMAZING SPIDER-MAN flick? After Uncle Ben is killed, Spider-Man sets out to find his killer. Naturally, Uncle Ben's murderer is a blond white guy (the actor who plays the character has the uber Nordic name of Leif Gantvoort). Bearing this crucial bit of info in mind, Spidey decides to engage in a little racial profiling, and proceeds to wage war on the abundant number of blond male street criminals in New York (I scarcely need to remind your readers of the vast numbers of blond thieves, rapists, murderers, drug dealers, car thieves, etc, who infest New York;why, every day we read of some new atrocity committed by such criminal gangs as the Viking Marauders, The Teutonic Knights, The Baltic Barbarians, and the fearsome Prussian Werewolves), all in the hopes of finding his uncle's killer. A substantial chunk of screen time is devoted to Spidey swinging into action when he hears the magic words: "Suspect is a blond Caucasian male."

  11. Interesting strategy by the Dems- label 'illegal immigrant' as a slur. I guess next it will be accepted as a slur, then elevated to the insane level that all slurs in this society are- where you can get fired, imprisoned for a 'hate' crime, etc. over it. Delegitimize legitmate words, make it so we have no way to talk about the things we need to discuss. Welcome to 1984.

Why don't you save a few syllables and just call them "illegals"? Plenty of Mexicans use that term.

  14. Nonjudgmentalism is the new judgmentalism. For example, most of the so-called non-judgmental movies and TV shows about gays are actually VERY judgmental as in 'we judge gays to be wonderful, saintly, and good', and 'we judge anyone who opposes the gay agenda to be phobic, evil, gross, vile, odious, and noxious'.

Just as Jewish supremacists pretend to be for equality, Gay judgmentalists pretend to be for nonjudgmentalism. Okay, how about stop judging people with the nightstick of PC?

  15. I call them simply illegals. Among many other things, I resent them for taking shortcuts where I had to endure the whole enchilada of paying taxes for 15 years and going through the nightmarish bureaucracy of the "outstanding abilities" Green Card process. I am a citizen now and I am eternally grateful to the adoptive country but in the big picture, alas, I think it was a mistake on part of the USA to admit me and others like me. Not as big a mistake as keeping the borders open but a mistake nevertheless...

"Many Republicans dream of gathering more minority votes. Black and Hispanic votes are pretty much a lost cause—they well know that their interests lie in programs which transfer wealth to them and Democrats do that best. No, Hispanics are not natural Republicans, as some propagandists have claimed. Although Hispanics may oppose some liberal issues like gay marriage, in the end, economics wins. And Mr. Amnesty himself, John McCain, did so poorly with Hispanic voters that only the stupidest of Stupid Party strategists could think that more Hispandering on amnesty is a wining issue."

GOP should drop the hope of winning over the MAJORITY of Hispanics but it should still try to hold onto the 30% who voted for McCain. Every vote counts in close elections, and it's better to have 30% than 20% or 10%.

While we should give up any hope of winning the 'open borders' Hispanics, we should appeal to law-and-order Hispanics, and they do exist. Just because we can't get the majority of Hispans, we shouldn't alienate ALL Hispans.

  34. "Illegal immigrant" - is not a matter of semantics. The word is the correct, legal and descriptive term for someone who has illegally entered a nation state in contravention of that state's laws.
It really is as simple as that. In the same way a buiding constructed without a permit is illegal, an MD practising without certification is an illegal doctor etc etc. The whole point is that a law has broken by an actor in the exercise of thrir activity - something you can't get around by playing around with words or looking the other way.

The term "illegal immigrant" was first used in 1939 as a slur by the British toward Jews who were fleeing the Nazis and entering Palestine without authorization.

This is a made-up, reductio ad Hitler fact. To check it I went to Google books, searched "illegal immigrant," then narrowed the search to free ebooks, which includes mostly pre-1918 non-copyright material. The term was used in the 19th century.

For example, in the Congressional Edition, volume 3073 (1892-93), we find the following questions asked during a 1902 Senate hearing: "It is also, I think, worthy of note that the owner of the vessel would certainly be supposed to take much greater care in examining the passengers to see that no illegal immigrants—I think that is the term used—be allowed to embark. . ."

    and this:

"Would they not really be examined there by your subagents, who would be required not to sell a ticket to any person who would be an undesirable or illegal immigrant to this country?"

The golden age when an illegal could simply buy a fake green card and social security card to get on a payroll somewhere and start a life here will soon draw to a close. It is already beginning to happen in Alabama and Arizona. It is now abundantly clear that workplace verification, secure communities policing, secure ID, and fences work and will do to illegals what the barbed wire fence did to the buffalo. We just have not had the political will to do it.

Guys like Garcia are fighting a spirited rear guard battle but they will lose and they are running out of cards up their sleeve. The legal hurdles have been cleared by the Supreme Court, technological advances are eliminating the shadows to hide in, and the opposition has gotten smarter and better organized thanks to the internet. But the pro-illegal side has one last card to play, the race card. One by one we have progressed through the litany of specious arguments that the pro-illegal side has put forward. It won’t work; they will just get a 51 foot ladder. It is unconstitutional. It is bad for the economy … Proven false, those cards have all now been burned. My guess is that from here on out all we will hear from the supporters of illegal aliens will be shouts of racism, racial profiling, look at what you are doing to the little children, etc. Garcia’s little snit is just the business lobby’s way of putting a Hispanic name and a nice suite on the same argument.

The point is not to strain suspension of disbelief as far as possible, it's to stretch it only as far as is necessary to tell the story.

Otherwise, why not have all the criminals be hot chicks in skimpy outfits?

Also, people go to see superhero movies for ESCAPISM. One thing people wanna escape from is the depressing reality of black crime. So, it's more fun to make believe in white villains. They seem more fun and less threatening.

Copyright violation or illegal file copying or whatever you want to call it isn't stealing, it's copyright violation or illegal file copying or whatever you want to call it. When you steal something, the person who had it no longer has it. That's integral to the term, "stealing."

Don't water down theft by misusing the term.

I'm sorry but copying publicised material, contrary to the law or not, simply isn't "stealing". Furthermore the US constitution specifically states that intellectual property grants are meant to benefit the public by fostering innovation. For the life of me I fail to see how having a copyright that extends to 75 years after an author's death serves this purpose, just as I fail to see how software patents of any sort promote the creation of new software. Intellectual properties laws have simply gotten out of hand and flouting them is now a legitimate act of civil protest. It turns out that the faction pushing for more and more intellectual property laws is the same hostile elite pushing for open borders, civil rights laws and the rest. (It was the republicans that did away with the "Stop Online Privacy Act", not the democrats) This shouldn't suprise anyone because hollywood may be the biggest beneficiary of eternal copyright, and stands to benefit even more if it can threaten teens with let's see...fines of up to $250000 and five year sentences. Kids copying movies may be better off simply committing murder. In the same fashion that affirmative action was made law, the wise and the good have decided to simply bypass congress with new IP laws, in the form of ACTA, an international treaty largely negotiated in secret and not subject to congressional approval. Basically if you're against the "freetards", you're on the side of the enemy.

Wrong, it's the anti-freetards that are the parasites. After all they (or those they defend) expect the government to give them artificial monopoly rights for 30 year+ old songs that they elected to publicise. This costs the public money with no benefit to the public, consistent with the now-reigning ethos of corporate America. If you think you should have to pay for downloading the happy birthday song then go ahead, but please spare the rest of us your moralising, because hardly anyone is going to buy it, especially when they understand what the law as written really implies. The current legal landscape is not what the the founding father's intended, furthermore imposing laws without congressional debate (consider ACTA) is anarcho-tyranny.

Yet, the school seemed to have a horde of gushing parents, papers and politicians in its corner.

Our exchange was civil, but I could tell he was irritated that I was not with the program. After our exchange he wrote an impassioned editorial for the school, hitting all the bullet points and excoriating the county BOE. Then he ended the thing with his zinger: He knew best, because his son (who also worked at the paper) had gone to the school.

For as long as I can remember, my dad bought Niger seed to feed the finches. A few years ago, I saw the stuff had been renamed "Nyjer seed". Since then, I haven't even been able to find any that has the word "Niger" on the packaging.

Wouldn't want all those blacks buying birdseed to be offended by oblique references to slavery right there on the packaging.

  81. "Delegitimize legitmate words, make it so we have no way to talk about the things we need to discuss. Welcome to 1984."

The Frankfurt School Marxists have done this with the entire language, and PC was the Trojan horse used to do so. A perfect example is the word racism, a word invented by Leon Trotsky. The Marxists decided this term was more efficient because it only applied to the more numerous and dominant members of a country. Everybody of any race can be a bigot, and that's why you rarely read/hear that term being used.

Control the language and you control the parameters of discourse. That is the reason the things discussed on this blog are verboten in the mainstream press.

Nerdy but supersmart jewish kid thwarts blonde class bully and wins the heart of the blonde beauty of his dreams. The blonde beauty in this case is Emma Stone, who, curiously, dyed her hair blonde for the part."

Don't forget all the blonde crminals he foils.

  83. "How about a WN strategy of appealing to the whitest, most Euro hispanics and splitting them off from the mestizos?"

An openly white nationalist society would put pressure on Hispanics to play up their whiteness whether it was designed to or not.

  84. Everybody of any race can be a bigot, and that's why you rarely read/hear that term being used.

My theory is that since liberalism is bigotry (liberals do not acknowledge the right of men to reject their key principles), the word hits a bit too close to home and had to go.

Are you trying to use "Hispanic Marketing Consultant" in a way to replace "Scots-Irish"?
