Google Gaydar

In my Taki's Magazine column, I explain how to use Google's auto-completion prompts to quantify the Undernews -- the stuff a lot of people are interested in but isn't respectable.

As an example, I've started with the perennial question of whether various male movie and TV stars are gay. My method won't tell you the answer, but will tell you on a 0 to 100 scale whom the question is being asked about. Being able to quickly generate a lot of quantitative data about public perception, intuition, and curiosity, whether right or wrong, has a variety of uses.
To illustrate how you can use Google auto-complete to measure which actors trigger the public’s gaydar, let’s use veteran comic actor Bill Murray. If you type in “Bill Murray” and hit the space bar, Google offers you the ten most popular ways to complete the search phrase (e.g., “Bill Murray movies” and “Bill Murray net worth”). Not surprisingly, none of the ten suggestions for Murray includes the word “gay.”
If you want to try even harder, type “Bill Murray g.” You’ll get ten g-word suggestions such as “Ghostbusters 3,” “Garfield,” and “golf,” but once again, not “gay.”
This is hardly astounding. Bill Murray rarely plays gay characters (except in the farcical Ed Wood). He’s too old and odd-looking to be the object of gay fantasies. Most of all, in all his decades of fame, he’s never seemed gay. Thus, on a 0 to 100 scale of Google Gaydar, Murray is a 0.

I run through quite a few examples and offer cautions and a few tentative lessons from the data.

Read the whole thing there.

I encourage readers to try out Google autocomplete prompts to measure perceptions of other aspects of the Undernews.

  1. Is it possible to card a negative score? For example, 'Joe Blow gay menace' or 'Jane Doe gay pathology'.

'Steve Sailer' has two gay prompts in the Google top ten; however, closer analysis reveals that these are 'Steve Sailer gays' and 'Steve Sailer gay marriage'.

So if someone has been outspoken on the subject of say gay marriage, he may clock a false positive. (Clint Eastwood scores 40 like this). Ah, but cultural Marxism, also known as mainstream opinion, tells us that homophobes are really just big ole queens anyway.

  2. I was curious so I tried it on the ill-fated Ambassador Stevens (there are rumors) and got nothing. Probably too soon.
But then I thought to try it on the openly gay Anderson Cooper and find his google gaydar goes off at "ander-". You might have to adjust your scale to account for the high profiled and the flaming.

Your score is zero. Even all the way to "Steve Sailer gay" google suggests Steve Sailer gays, as in Steve Sailer on the gays. Flame retardant!

  3. I counted "gay," "gay rumors," and the like, but not "gay marriage" when it was an actor like Alec Baldwin that some people seem to treat as a fount of political wisdom on topics du jour.

  4. Good observation about the lack of gay interest in golf. The idea that explains most of gay deviance is their Peter Pan-ism, being psychologically and even somewhat bodily stunted in childhood.

Golf is a far more grown-up sport than others, so that's the one they'll be least interested in.

If gays were feminized, they'd show more interest in golf, since women do, even if in some time periods and at certain ages than others.

If gays were hyper-masculinized, they'd be golf junkies.

But the greatest predictor of not getting golf is being a child. Gays don't care for it because they're infantile, not effeminate. (Feminized and infantilized are correlated because females are more neotenous.)

  8. So again we see the problem with a pop culture article. Namely the myopic or discursive nature of self-censorship, within and without. Google has, at least, in the past censored certain prompts if not results.

For instance, until recently it was impossible to get a prompt for "Kobe Bryant rape" even though it was a major, major story not very long ago. Of course, that's the very reason why: Kobe couldn't be associated too closely with that incident while winning titles. Bad business.

On the other side, for those who must be smeared lest too many innocent minds hear their platform, Pat Buchanan immediately prompts "racist" and "anti-semite". Or for that matter, your name -- "racist" is the first prompt.

It rather undermines the meaning of this exercise, doesn't it? Or is it limited it to poorly closeted celebrities?

As addendum, Tom Cruise may or may not be gay. But gays, for obvious reasons, have always wanted him to be gay, and today straights are only too happy to see him as a fag since he's also considered a hateful psychotic or not too far off the dreaded MeL Gibson Standard. There's not much traceable evidence for this, other than what a large number of straights and almost all gays *want* or choose to believe.

Meanwhile, a guy like Louie Anderson, well known for trade at gay brothels, doesn't prompt gay rumors at all on the Google search.

    Rather telling.

But actually, famous lesbians are far more entertaining for most of us, anyway. Rumors about Gillian Anderson with female models or Rihanna picking up strippers would be a far better basis for an article, no matter what Google prompts.

And they congratulate themselves on being "in the know" for saying he's gay, even they only say so because other equally clueless people spread the rumor. Maybe people wanted to bring him down because of his all-American persona combined with cultish reclusiveness.

  20. I have a book titled "Hollywood Gays" by Boze Hadleigh. It was in the dumpster of a neighbor who was moving. It includes: Cary Grant, Rnandolph Scott and Brad Davis who didn't want to be exposed and other less surprising gays like Liberace, Cesar Romero, Tony Perlins and James Coco. Apparently this guy Hadleigh has written a series of such books. He seems to think "outing" gay celebrities is somehow noble.

In any case the revelation that a Hollywood star is gay is weak tea indeed, it's hardly worth the effort of exposure. The only gay revelation with any real shock value is Barack Obama.

He is certainly prissy. He sings, he dances, he cavorts. He's snippy rather than menacing. Bill O'Reilly, an old guy, routinely threatens to punch someone in the nose. John Kerry pretended to be interested in guns and hunting so as to "macho up" for the election campaign. John McCain is so damn manly that he doesn't have to bother. He can't lift his arms so he'd probably kick you.

Obama does none of that. He has a host of personal characteristics that are not very manly. He acts like just one of the girls on "The View".

I tried a few more J-dars. "Scarlett Johansson J"? Yep. "Chelsea Clinton J"? Nope, only second place. "Ivanka Trump J"? Nope, second after Jewelry. "Rachel Maddow J"? Yep. "Sylvester Stallone J"? Yeah.

"Steve Sailer" doesn't score any "gay" hits, and "Steve Sailer g" only gets Sailer writing about gays (2 from the bottom) and gay marriage (last ranked), for a score of 0.

On the other hand, "Steve Sailer" brings up "Steve Sailer racist" as number 2 on the list, for a score of 90. This beats the "racist" scores for James Watson (80), Pat Buchanan (80), John Derbyshire (80), Arthur Jensen (60), Jeremiah Wright (10), Charles Murray (9), Mitt Romney (5) and Barack Obama (4). But it's less than the perfect 100s for Henry Harpending and for Gregory Cochran (once you throw out another Gregory Cochran who sells insurance).

Probably a high "racist" score is worse for one's career than a high "gay" score.

"Hitler" and "Adolf Hitler" have "gay" scores of 9 and "racist" scores of 0.

    Steve,

You mentioned Tony Randall in your column... I see another reason why Google Gaydar tags him.

He played the lead character in the short-lived NBC sitcom Love, Sidney, which was the first American TV series to feature a gay lead character (back in 1981!).

By today's standards, the character's homosexuality was extremely muted. In the 2-hour pilot, it was subtle but unmistakable. Because of protests from interest groups, it was only obliquely hinted at in the first season. The second season hinted at it much more due to a change in the creative team, but still never made it explicit. The exploration of gay themes went no further because NBC pulled the plug on it after the second season.

  41. Here in the LA Basin, talk and news radio has many ads for Google Search reputation "fixers" that remove negative keywords AND links to searches on your name and business.

Google is probably good for lawyers that way.

The existence of the Undernews itself is unhealthy, and until recently there was little undernews. What made America great, and in fact greater than any other nation, was that things were overtly discussed, openly, and not in hidden, obfuscating language. Some of it was not very nice, to say the least, derogatory language towards gays, non-Whites, and so on but it was at least honest. Everyone knew where they stood. Openness is its own strength.

An elaborate Undernews is a sign of a society paralyzed by caste systems, fear, taboos, and entrenched interests unable to speak openly and move discussion along. It is a feature of hierarchical, hereditary, semi-aristocratic societies oriented towards the feminine, rather than masculine.

Reading say, Eric Ambler's "State of Siege" you see in the early set-up an elaborate game that the "Sundanese" play with each other. Someone with a grudge or debt or what have you with a powerful person will make up the most outrageous gossip and repeat it blandly, the more wild and improbable the better; while the listeners will say the rumors are impossible out of personal knowledge, the goal to keep a straight face. The whole point is to tell the reader that the society in which the protagonist is stuck in, waiting to get out, is completely non-Western as understood in the year 1956. The gossip and rumor-mongering are there because open criticism and opposition are impossible in "Sundanese" (really: Indonesian) society. And the Sundanese are weaker because of it. Set against a double-crossing coup by Islamists, one of the Sundanese officers criticizes the Islamists by saying to the effect that more Mosques and more Islam are all well and good, but what then? How will people eat better, have better sewage (the book notes the canals are full of human waste and stink of it), clean water, and the modern things like refrigerators, radios, and clean running water that make life better?

I agree (because I said it myself years ago) with Heartiste that the stunning changes in the economy and "status-hoarding" are as explosive as anything else in the West, matching printing, gunpowder, steam power, the internal combustion engine, computers and computer networks, television, radio, and the pill and condom for social effect. The Undernews is here because technology changed society. Radically. In ways we are still comprehending. The change is in my mind BIGGER than that of the Industrial Revolution.

VERY perceptive! As a gay man myself, I've known some guys who were trying not to be gay but eventually came out. One sure sign was the way they talked about girls or attempted to flirt with girls. There was always something "off" about it. The words and phrases might be ther but they didn't match the emphasis, body language, expression or other non-verbal cues.

I once analogized this to speaking English as a second language. The artifice was evident in the way that a non-native speaker sometimes can't "hear" an error or weird construction. Obama's View appearance made me think of that too.

I am a Yankee and recently moved to a big Southern city. I work in a field with a lot of gays.

Literally half a dozen times in this city, I've become acquainted with a guy from work and assume, "obviously, this guy is gay."

Then later I meet his (female) wife and children. What's the deal? Is the Southern accent misleading me? Are they more likely to be "in the closet"? Is there something else going on?

They were not rumors. There's a picture of Stevens as young, handsome blond, and his curly-haired beau, circa 1980, on hillbuzz, a conservative blog run by a gay conservative. Yes, that's right.
Apparently the two chaps were very taken with Brideshead revisited and fancied themselves as Sebastian and Charles.
Actually, in the book & the series, I never really saw Charles as gay. He didn't go about lusting for men. He was just haunted by one man and all he symbolized, and more for reasons other than his body.
I can't tell you how exasperated, nay disgusted, I am getting with having every same-sex relationship, short of mom-daughter, dad-son, described as "gay." For one thing, I'm a woman and I can go for weeks without giving a fig about sex (even when I was young.) So I particularly resent it when I've been "accused." I have no desire whatsoever for physical intimacy with the other females, however much I may enjoy their company.
So I think it is the same for a lot of men. But when they are young, it could be a case of whatever is handy and willing.

but before I do, I must purge the idea of B.O. as "candy." He's too repulsive. In fact, only one year after his election, I was talking to very nice black lady about him. She did not like him at all--said there was something off-putting about him--didn't think she'd want him approaching her in an amorous way. I assured her that should she meet the Great One, there was little chance of that calamity, for here's the rumor...

Mr. Sinclair (declared criminally insane by the MSM, but is damnably articulate and focussed for that description)wrote a letter to the WH with a description of B.O.'s privates; but I don't think M.O. would be shocked or surprised. She might not even remember herself.
There was an execution-style murder of an openly gay choir director, Donald Young, in Dec. 2008, in the church of Jeremiah Wright. Mr. Young had just gotten in touch with Sinclair. He admitted it was at the behest of the Obama campaign, to see if he'd be trying to make trouble, but the two got to talking and found they really liked each other, so Mr. Young admitted what he had been put up to. The Chicago police were ordered off the case, and the press won't write about it, and Donald's family have been scared into silence.
Sinclair always claimed it was Obama's drug use,not his gayness, that rankled him as most hypocritical, because no one asked him about gayness.
It was well known in Chicago circles who knew of him, and B.O. and Rahm were members of Man's Country, a gay club in Chicago.
Pretty soon Mr. B.O.'s orientation will be as well known as J. Edgar Hoover's proclivities.
But in the meantime, we must all pretend to be shocked, shocked, that such an open & honest person would be hiding anything.

  56. The secret about Obama is that there isn't much of a secret. He's an unremarkable preppie who happens to have had a black father, which propelled him much farther than he would have gotten without that distinction. Not many people, on any side of the political spectrum, want to talk about the bleeding obvious, so a lot of creative energy has been invested in less plausible theories about Obama.

Best joke ever told on the Tonight Show:

Carson: On Bonanza you were four bachelors with no women in sight. Were you gay?

Michael Landon: No, but thank God Hop Sing was!

  59. They were not rumors. There's a picture of Stevens as young, handsome blond, and his curly-haired beau, circa 1980, on hillbuzz, a conservative blog run by a gay conservative. Yes, that's right.

A few days ago, I tried to hot-link to HillBuzz, when they first broke the Stevens story, but Komment Kontrol shot me down.

Well, at least now we can MENTION HillBuzz [if not actually hot-link to them].

  63. "He's an unremarkable preppie"

In this age of television, his Hollywood 'rock star' charms and verbal instincts make him remarkable.
Maybe Romney has a more remarkable record as businessman and politician, but he's unremarkable as a TV personality.
TViability matters in politics in this day and age.

Also, Obama balances aloofness with approachableness. Some politicians are too detached and distant--like elder Bush--while some politicians are too goshy chummy--like Dubya.

People want leaders who seem greater and higher yet seems friendly and nice. Obama plays the superior man but with warmth and smile. So, he's both the man high above and the man who fist bumps you.

White boys have no such command of style.

Many centuries of sound and fury signifying nothing (in Europe) would tend to suggest otherwise.

You must be joking. "Peter Pan-ism" implies some sort of childlike asexuality, but gay (male) culture is actually hyper-sexualized.

  67. Then why have you written about him 340 times?

Because the phenomenon of Barack Obama is endlessly fascinating. But the man himself remains a furtive cipher (you know, like a closet case).

People want leaders who seem greater and higher yet seems friendly and nice. Obama plays the superior man but with warmth and smile. So, he's both the man high above and the man who fist bumps you.

Oh you're priceless. White boys have no command of a certain type of black charisma that Obama (to his credit) has not. Good for him. The last president was a strutting a--hole, and it was embarrassing. We don't need to go back there.

Obama remains distressed at his own white characteristics, as one former white girlfriend alleges (which is the epitome of whiteness; no self-respecting brother frets about such things--nor does he diss his mother and origins as O does)--though in his autobiography he claims his mother says all she passed on to him were his eyebrows--you wish, O, with that awkward caucasoid skull that would have drawn daily beatings in the average black high school.

That's why white liberals like him. He wasn't black enough for Chicago but he was white enough for America. He's like Sydney Potier in an age of Lil Wayne. You're just projecting.

Just as when O first arrived on the national scene, people were ascribing to him the sort of masculine charisma which they associate with black men. So, for instance, when we saw photos of him with his shirt off, a guy who looked to be in pretty good shape for a middle-aged man became, in the words of one suck-up over at Asia Times, possessed of--no joke--"glistening pecs". Or these notions of his "hipness". Who the hell fist-bumps un-ironically anyway? White phonies, that's who. It's like high-fiving. One should be embarrassed.

We shouldn't want a "cool" president anyway. It's like voting for the guy you'd rather have a beer with. Have we all become idiots?

My favorite complaint is when people like Bill Maher complain he should be "blacker", as in bad-assed; yeah, the Kwame Kilpatrick model, that's what the country needs!

Bloody hell, they're both Scientologists. If anything knocks Gay off the throne of King of Creepy Hill, it's that.

Has anyone written about the incendiary nature of the comments attributed to Travolta by his gay accuser? Because this guy claims Travolta said he was initially repulsed by homosexuality but "learned" to like it.
That's a cardinal transgression against "born this way" dogma, the sort of utterance that ruins careers.

You're not English, I'll bet. Edward Ryder types are two a penny over here (or were, when this was still a civilised country). They are not "nice", a characteristic never valued by the English upper and upper middle classes. What Ned Ryder notices in his son is a lack of fibre, and he sets about trying to instil some in him before an even less nice outside world does it for him.

  83. What makes you think that the 'don't ask don't tell' policy protecting Hollywood leading men will last forever?

DADT was invented in Hollywood, by David Geffen, good friend of Bill Clinton, to help him get out of the jam Clinton created by prematurely stirring up the gay hornet's nest. DADT was the compromise that Geffen came up with, smart gay guy that he was. He knew the country wasn't ready for gay soldiers and would never really be - it had to be put in a cowed, beaten down, stunned state, as it is now.

I predict that pretty soon DADT will be unofficially repealed in Hollywood and the market will decide whether or not gay leading men are acceptable.

Or maybe he sees himself as a Snickers bar in a gay bar.
