Six studies explored the overlap between racial and gender stereotypes, and the consequences of this overlap for interracial dating, leadership selection, and athletic participation. Two initial studies captured the explicit and implicit gender content of racial stereotypes: Compared with the White stereotype, the Asian stereotype was more feminine, whereas the Black stereotype was more masculine. Study 3 found that heterosexual White men had a romantic preference for Asians over Blacks and that heterosexual White women had a romantic preference for Blacks over Asians; preferences for masculinity versus femininity mediated participants’ attraction to Blacks relative to Asians. The pattern of romantic preferences observed in Study 3 was replicated in Study 4, an analysis of the data on interracial marriages from the 2000 U.S. Census. Study 5 showed that Blacks were more likely and Asians less likely than Whites to be selected for a masculine leadership position. In Study 6, an analysis of college athletics showed that Blacks were more heavily represented in more masculine sports, relative to Asians. These studies demonstrate that the gender content of racial stereotypes has important real-world consequences.

Some of these disparities diminish if you look at just American-born Asians, but, overall, it's pretty much in line with my 1997 article Is Love Colorblind? I just didn't assume it was all sheer hallucinatory stereotyping.

But wait. Isn't what counts as a masculine sport just a stereotype? Change the masculine stereotype to math and Asians immediately would become the most masculine :)

Time to take the high road and start standing in solidarity. The only obstacle Asians have to overcome on the football field is discrimination, pure and simple. Why else wouldn't Asians be fairly represented in the NFL and NCAA football? Stereotypes have real and disastrous consequences, people. If you can't see that, then you're blind, and YOU'RE the problem.

  3. What are the "masculine leadership positions" they are talking about?

Which sports do they define as masculine sports and which as feminine?

  4. Do people who come up with studies like this do it with a straight face or with a sly smirk?

  5. I'll take a crack at it: college football is pretty masculine.

  6. Btw, there are lots of macho asian stuff in popular culture. Think of all the kung fu movies and the like. Yet, it seems the most winners of MMA and stuff like that are blacks, mulattoes, and some whites.

  7. Yeah, I'd think football is masculine. Basketball maybe. I'd say soccer is feminine, but I know I'd get an argument from quite a few people on that.

Tennis? Track? Swimming? i have no idea?

and I asked about masculine leadership positions because it seems that in mixed race teams the team captains tend to be white.

  8. It's time we conduct a study of how people react to reading the summaries of studies like this. I want to know how many Americans (broken down by race, political and religious affiliation, and region) would get the vapors reading that paragraph and how many would say "uh, obviously."

  9. "Which sports do they define as masculine sports and which as feminine?"

Interesting question. In football, not all positions are the same. One might argue that the linemen and running positions are the most masculine. Linemen are big and tough and bash into one another. They are like bears and bulls. Running back has to crash into everyone.
Receivers are more 'feminine'. They are surely tough and strong, but they have to be zippy and zappy and try to avoid contact as much as possible.
Quarterback position is I guess more 'feminine' than the more physically demanding positions, but since it's a leadership position, it could also be said to be the most 'masculine'. I dunno.

    These things are kinda funny.

A cat is said to be a feminine-ish creature. And 'feline' is used almost as a synonym for 'feminine'. But a leopard can bring down big prey many times its size that is bulky and masculine.
One might say Sugar Ray Leonard, in his feline speediness, was 'feminine', the Michael Jackson of boxing. But he brought down the much bigger and strong Donnie Lalonde. He even beat Marvin Hagler!

So, if we're talking of styles, 'feminine' can beat 'masculine'. Indeed, many 'feminine' boxers have beaten 'masculine' brawlers.
The elegant Sugar Ray Robinson defeated the bullish Jake Lamotta five times. Lamotta won only once.
The sometimes bitchily playful Ali clobbered the hulking Foreman.

  10. Asian men in the US have slighty higher PER CAPITA rates of intermarriage with White women than Black men with White women.

If you take into account that approximately 60% of the 'Asian' population in the US are immigrants who :

    1) Came to the US older
    2) Grew up in their native Asian culture
    3) Poor English skills
    4) Arrived in the US already married

But when you look at US-born Asian men, these Asian men have an over 42% interracial marriage rate (see chart below) and a 3 times (3x) PER-CAPITA rate of intermarriage with White women vs marriage rates of Black men with White women.

    Syncho swimming too?

Ice skating is pretty feminine if not gay.

    Terry Butcher might disagree.

  14. When discussing feminine vs masculine, we gotta ask if it's about sheer power or style.

Tim Roth's character in ROB ROY was 'feminine' in style but he sure was deadly.

If 'masculine' just means bigger and stronger, what about a feminine woman who's 6 ft and a very masculine guy who's a super-midget at 2 ft. The feminine woman will be bigger and stronger than the masculine tiny man. So, who is more 'feminine' and who is more 'masculine' in this case?

  15. The median thirty year old Black male weighs almost 180 pounds and is around five foot eight inches tall. The category which Asians fall into is “Other” and this category has a median weight of 160 pounds and is less than five foot six. ”Other” does not include Whites, Blacks or Hispanics so it is a category heavily populated by Asians.

The median Asian male is giving away twenty pounds and two inches in height to the median African American male. Put an average Black male and an average Asian male in a cage fight, repeat a hundred times with different but still average competitors, and you would become a very wealthy man at even odds if all you knew were the races of the respective combatants.

  17. "Steve Sailer said...
I'll take a crack at it: college football is pretty masculine."

It is easy enough to rank sports hierarchically, from lest to most masculine. The only two sports that come to mind that run counter to this narrative are wrestling (disturbingly homoerotic, but certainly masculine, and hockey.

Not difficult to figure out why whites are overrepresented in collegiate wrestling, but hockey seems as though it should place explosive speed at a premium. Any thoughts, Steve?

  18. Interesting observation about wide receivers. The more mouthy ones are often referred to as divas.

  19. I was gonna say, you wrote about all of this a long time ago. So I guess by this standard, some enterprising young Poli Sci Grad Student ought to be getting around to figuring out Sailer Strategy by 2020 or so.

  21. One thing Kim Jong Un and Gaddafi's sons have in common with Western elites. They all despise their own people and neglect them while being so eager to dilly dally with famous celebrities of the world.

Libyans were stuck in misery, but what did Gaddafi and sons care about? Inviting international celebrities over to perform in concerts. Traveling around the world and enrolling in elite universities in the UK.
Kim Jong Un got his education in Switzerland. Even western elite institutions are open to children of monsters.
So, even as Kim neglects of millions of North Koreans on the verge of starvation, he wants to play with the rich and famous. And this Rodman character obliges, and all of a sudden, it's news... like gangnam style.

And of course the Jewish elites couldn't give a rat's ass about the masses of white Americans who are being culturally and ethnically destroyed. The elites would rather pose for pictures with Mandela.

Depends on if you control for technique. Technique is a major factor in cage fighting. The major techniques used in cage fighting are Asian (judo, jujitsu, muay thai, etc.) or European (Greco-Roman wrestling, boxing, etc.). The black fighters all use the European and Asian techniques. In a genuine black vs Asian cage fight, the blacks would not use any Asian techniques, but would have to use their own developed techniques. There are no major black techniques used in cage fighting.

  23. Hockey is a White sport because it requires lots and lots of ice time to acquire the basic skating skills just to participate. Even more and lots of coaching (pricey) to be a significant defensive or offensive force. You have to read the puck, the players, and anticipate correctly. It is not natural. You can't just run fast.

Jackie Robinson was perhaps the most talented natural athlete around, astounding motor skills and hand-eye coordination. Even he could not even get on the ice, much less play. In contrast to baseball, where he had relatively little experience (it was his worst sport).

  24. Though in college football Timmy Chang(Asian)has thrown more TD's in his career than any Black Quarterback. Also you could say Haloti Ngata is the best interior defensive lineman currently in the NFL. I would say that Blacks only have major advantages at receiver, defensive back and halfback.

  25. What race are Samoans? Are Polynesians their own race? Do they just fall under the "Asian/Pacific Islander" category as Pacific Islanders? Manti T'eo looks like he could be Filipino.

  26. since we have title IX for women, shouldn't we allow for competition by race - so whites can have their own league & play against whites - b/c looking at basketball & football, i see whites are not getting EQUAL ACCESS!!! sorry, i was overcome with civil rights fervor.

  27. Posted before but interesting.

    http://pewsocialtrends.org/files/2010/10/755-marrying-out.pdf

On pg. 35 there's data on intermarriage for Asians and Hispanics divided by native born and immigrant.

41.7% of US born Asian males married outside of the race while only 11.7% of foreign born Asian males (presumably those who arrived at a young age to the US) married outside of the race.

  28. The Gymnastic rings are masculine because no woman is strong enough to perform on them and the event which men are too tall to compete in is feminine.

Asian men have straight shiny hair, are short, smooth skinned, and have no facial hair. Its no wonder they are stereotyped as feminine.
This is the saddest thing about the entire multicultural project. Asian Men and Black women are getting penalized for no fault of theirs.
