Has Mayor Rahm learned from Israel?

From WBBM-CBS in Chicago:
School Closing Opponents Call Mayor A Racist Liar
CHICAGO (CBS) – The Chicago Public Schools’ plan to close 53 schools and 61 buildings, mostly in black neighborhoods, has some West Side residents vowing to fight the Emanuel administration until the end.
As WBBM Newsradio’s Mike Krauser reports, to hear some tell it on the West Side, Mayor Rahm Emanuel is a racist liar who doesn’t care about the kids. And they’re just getting started.
“I don’t see any Caucasians being moved, bussed, or murdered in the streets as they travel along gang lines, or stand on the steps of a CPS school,” said activist Wendy Matil Pearson as opponents of the school closing plans protested outside Horatio May Elementary Community Academy in the Austin neighborhood.

... Valerie Leonard, co-founder of the Lawndale Alliance, accused the mayor of trying to drive African Americans out of the city.
“He says that he wants to turn around the city of Chicago, make a new Chicago. Does that new Chicago mean no black folks?” she said. “Where are people going to go? They’re not going to stay around in the community if there are no schools!” ...
The protesters weren’t the first to accuse Emanuel of racism in his school-closing effort. The Chicago Teachers Union has repeatedly said the school closing plans are racist, as most of the schools that would be closed are in African-American communities.
On Thursday, CTU President Karen Lewis said the plan was both “racist” and “classist,” ...

I'm not up to date on Chicago, but none of this speculation about the Mayor's motivations sounds hugely implausible to me.

Mayor Emanuel is a worldly man. He's not some dweeb from Lake Forest. His family likes to emphasize how his mother was a civil rights activist for blacks in the American South, but they don't talk as much about his father. Dr. Benjamin Emanuel is an Israeli and belonged to the right-wing terrorist organization Irgun. Those are the the guys who blew up the British headquarters in the King David Hotel and committed the Deir Yassin massacre of an Arab village that did so much to improve Israel's long-term demographic position by terrifying many Palestinians into fleeing.

I'm not saying Rahm's dad was personally involved in either, but he was, by all accounts, a member of Irgun. And Irgun played a crucial role in Israeli history in the 1940s. Irgun was a predecessor of today's highly successful Likud Party. I presume that Rahm Emanuel is personally closer to Israel's non-Likud parties, but he definitely knows where Netanyahu is coming from.

The son remains so emotionally close to Israel that he served as a volunteer in Israel during the 1991 Gulf War. He's vacationed countless times in Israel, from summer camp as a child to recently vacationing there to hold his son's bar mitzvah at the Wailing Wall.

Presumably, the Mayor of Chicago knows a lot about Israeli politics, and the #1 lesson that all parties in Israel understand deep in their bones, much more intensely than American politicians understand, is: Demographics Matter. The basic lesson is: You want more of your kind of people and fewer of the other kind of people. The Israeli statesman's duty is to make that happen.

The basic logic of Israeli politics is that the Palestinians are Arabs and that, while Israel is a small place, the Arab World is a huge place, so there are lots of other places for the local Arabs to move to, away from Israel.

If you are an African-American in Chicago, the suspicion that Dr. Emanuel's son might view Chicago as a small place and view you as somebody who has a big place to move somewhere else in (namely, the rest of America), would be uncharitable but not unreasonable. Deep down, perhaps Rahm feels: "We're not racist: we've got Barack! And Oprah and Michael Jordan are welcome back any time. The rest of you ..."

A reader writes:
I'm wondering if you could do a blogpost in the near future on any future possibility on the next Detroit(or several new Detroits), what time frame and for what sociological reasons.
As you've written about before, there's a quiet quest by white liberals to chase out blacks. This is happening in NYC, D.C. and perhaps now in Chicago too.

Personally, I think St Louis is a good candidate [to become another Detroit], as is Memphis. Milwaukee is also right there on the list. Basically cities that are 2nd and 3rd tier, often populated by naïve and communitarian Germanics in the Midwest or abandoned by devil-may-care Southern whites like Memphis. Birmingham is another candidate in the latter category.

1st tier cities like Chicago or NYC understand that they could go down that path, which is why they're pricing out, or in the case of Chicago, just zoning people out from their homes.

I'm not an expert on cities these days. It would seem like a fascinating subject to statistically model as a way of predicting real estate prices. The problem is that a big chunk of the model would involve using Census Bureau race statistics. Somebody would have to come up with a way to launder the racial aspect so that corporations could pay you lots of money for your insights without getting them into trouble.

Another aspect would seem to be airports. Winner cities tend to have airports with direct connections to lots of other cities, while loser cities don't. The arrow of causation points both ways, obviously, but some of it is that frequent fliers want to live near direct connection airports, such as Atlanta, Dallas, Chicago, and, perhaps, Denver. You can have an inadequate airport if you are San Francisco, but don't risk it otherwise.

But it's not really a build it and they will come situation either. I used to fly in to Cincinnati a lot, and the airport was halfway across Kentucky. Presumably, they put it there so it would have a lot of room for expansion, but nobody seemed to be expanding, perhaps because the airport was way the hell out in Kentucky.

Also, it helps to have two airports, one for the masses (e.g., LAX or Dulles) and one for the elites (e.g., Reagan or Burbank, which is turning into a high-priced convenience for the entertainment industry. LAX is full of tattooed proles, while Burbank is full of successful-looking middle-aged couples picking up their lovely daughter flying in from Georgetown U., via Reagan).

  1. You've got the same dynamic working in London, England.
The current Tory lead coalition governmemnt is using the excuse of the current economic meltdown to push through policies blatantly aimed at eroding the welfare state - ironically, the Liberal Party,, thier coalition partners (who are supposed to be socially aware than Labour, they are the modern day political equivalent of Quakers), have let this attack on he welfare state to pass with a nod and a wink.
One big plank of the policy is to kick out the poor (ie mostly blacks and pakistanis) from council housing in central London. Due to historical reasons, the most desirous parts of central London are chock-full of public housing - often built to a very high standard - which is occupied by the poor and immigrants. Many high income professionals who desire to live in the center cannot because they cannot afford the enormous rivate sector rents and are too rich to qualify for public housing.
Hence the policy is a sly move for the Tories to appeal to their 'own' people.

  2. It's possible that Rahm shares Rich Daley's apparent goal of shipping blacks out of the city, but this looks more like a lagging effect of Daley's policies:

"Chicago's population fell by 200,418 from 2000 to 2010, and blacks accounted for almost 89% of that drop." -USA Today, 5/19/2011

"Over the last 10 years, [CPS] district enrollment has dropped 20 percent." -Washington Post, 3/21

"Officials said the shutdowns would affect 30,000 students... most now attending poorly performing schools in African-American neighborhoods on the South and West sides where enrollment has sagged in recent years." -Chicago Tribune, 3/22

So are you saying that he's a hypocrite? That while pursuing his policies in Chicago, he would oppose, say, a city in the US run by gentiles that discriminated against and excluded Jews? That he would oppose, say, real estate covenants like WASPs used to have 50 years ago that were used to exclude Jews from their neighborhoods and towns?

  5. I think this is something that we'll see more and more of in the future. Jews don't like living in sh**holes any more than the rest of us, really. It is notable that the Frankfurt School Political Correctness was founded in Frankfurt, Germany. In 1920s Germany probably the only other races Adorno et al had come into contact with were abstractions in the pages of books.

PC is too mind numbingly stupid to have been conceived of in a place like Brazil or the Southern states of the USA, indeed anywhere that Jews could actually have been able to compare Europeans to other possible hosts.

  6. As you like to write, it pays to pay attention to what white liberals (not the academics but the political and economic establishment) actually do rather than say.

Some of these school closings are just about closing half-empty schools but that's not all of it. Some are genuinely put in a position of ferring across their kids half-way 'round Chicago to more successful(i.e white) schools. Which is problematic because Chicago is "post-racial" the same way America has become.

Now, post-Obama, people (and especially white liberals) are more comfortable with their ethnocentrism. If you're lower-middle class blacks who became that in the past few years because of the recession, but you're still mentally and psychologically used to being slightly upper-middle class, there's pride too here.

And even beyond that, what are the economics? The kid will be losing a lot of time in transportation and may not blend in with the white crowd. It would be more tempting to slowly move out to more upwards mobile, however isolated, black patches further out of the city, which may be what Rahm is calculating.

I don't see white liberals shedding tears over the continuous whitening of Washington D.C. Deep down, they like the improved safety and the ever-increasing white faces they see on the street(but they would never admit it publicly and in some cases even privately to themselves).

The same story, as your reader suggested, is seen in the rapidly gentrifying boroughs of New York City and Bloomberg's relentless support for stop and frisk.

In many ways, Republicans are more squishy on these racial issues than white liberals, perhaps because they know they'll be called out on it in a way that white liberals won't. And attacking conservatives on race may alleviate white guilt that these liberals face over their choices, as well as to distract minorities from their own actions and point at those other, scary people. The Bad White People. Not Like Us, you know.

America may face a gradual Europeanization in urban development. There, the ghettoes are way outside the city core, which makes it easier to isolate and ignore. If you live in the 'burbs, you still have to travel to the inner city all the time and risk crime. If the ghetto is moved way outside the city core, you don't really have to mix that much with those people.

Plus, you get walking-distance to all the "good immigrants" you like, the successful, funny and charming ones. The ones who can make it to their inner city. And you get all the attractions too, culturally, close to your job and so on. It's easy to see the benefits of this and why white liberals want to move out blacks, improve their neighbourhoods and live the life they want to live. All while blaming the GOP for racism, of course.

Pretty smart, I have to admit.

  7. This little traitor has been at the forefront of fundamentally transforming America since 1992:

A former INS official who attended meetings with Rahm Emanuel when Emanuel was a White House aide says the hard-charging Democrat relaxed rules to naturalize even criminal immigrants and secure their votes for President Clinton ahead of the 1996 presidential election.

President-elect Barack Obama, who has chosen Emanuel to run White House operations as his chief of staff, has promised to sign legislation that loosens immigration and puts even illegal aliens on a fast track to citizenship.

Emanuel coordinated with Hispanic community organizers in Chicago to rubberstamp immigrants for citizenship, the INS official said in an exclusive interview with WND.

It turns out the long-time Chicago political operative was the behind-the-scenes catalyst for Citizenship USA, a project run out of then-Vice President Al Gore’s office.

“Rahm was doing it under the guise of Al Gore’s Reinventing Government program,” said the official, who helped direct INS security policy. “He was definitely the point man and was past his neck in the scandal at INS.”

“He got every rule changed in the hiring of adjudicators so they could naturalize more Mexican nationals to vote for Bill Clinton, not to mention getting the rules changed to naturalize anyone,” regardless of their criminal background, said the official, who’s still employed by the federal government and requested anonymity to avoid reprisals.

“They had immigration ceremonies at stadiums with DNC (Democratic National Committee) staff registering them as voters right there,” he added.

Another former INS official, William Carroll, said Emanuel “took midnight trips to INS headquarters to meet with (Commissioner) Doris Meissner about Citizenship USA.”

He said that in March 1996 he and other INS district directors were given “marching orders” by headquarters to push through as many new citizens as possible ahead of the election, even if no criminal and national security background checks were completed.

According to a November 1993 interview with Mother Jones magazine, Emanuel began pushing Clinton to be proactive on the issue of immigration right after he took office, and years ahead of the 1996 re-election campaign.

“I just wanted to be ahead of this issue and have our staff on it, defining it constantly,” Emanuel said, eyeing Texas and California, two key states in 1996 where immigration was a hot issue.

Clinton took his close aide’s advice. In September 1994, the president met with the head of the Hispanic group UNO, or United Neighborhood Organization, during a fundraiser in Chicago. The president of Chicago-based UNO, Daniel “Danny” Solis, explained that the growing number of immigrants represented a “great opportunity” to get a million new voters, but “we have to get all these citizens naturalized.”

    And they're still at it.

BUR has become a sprawling behemoth over the last 2 decades, continues to expand, and seems to cater to business travelers, politicians (esp. CA legislators' ever-growing retinues), and weekenders off to Vegas because it's a Southwest hub. It's not the glitterati plaything of your description, since all important, powerful or just obscenely rich Angelenos live about 30 minutes closer to LAX and instead need to fly to places like D.C., London, and Hong Kong. LAX is less convenient to the commoner, the flight path goes over the black neighborhoods, and paparazzi choke its loading zones but these are features, not bugs.

Emanuel Disavows 25% of School Kids, Says CTU

Karen Lewis, the Chicago Teacher's Union President, and Mayor Rahm Emanuel have a testy relationship at best.

But it wasn't always that way.

The two leaders met privately last year ahead of Emanuel's inauguration. They went for dinner and to attend a dance - both are fans of the art form - and to develop a working relationship.

"We were both seeing who the other person was," she said.

Lewis said she got her answer about Emanuel's character rather quickly.

"In that conversation, he did say to me that 25 percent of the students in this city are never going to be anything, never going to amount to anything and he was never going to throw money at them."

She said the comment took her aback, and she looked at him askance...

Seems to me that the justifying logic of Israeli demographic policy is that Arabs in general, and Palestinians in particular, are terrorists and criminals whose extreme behavior justifies extreme defensive measures by the Israelis. Thus, Israel is the world's greatest principled exception, not the world's greatest case of special pleading. All they have to do to keep the situation so is provoke the Pals off-camera.

It seems that NY and Chicago have chosen effete-macho Jewish tyrants who have no qualms with hypocrisy. Bloomberg was quite comfortable with banning beer at public concerts, but allowing wine, when the events featured classical music. These guys have enough money to avoid being corrupted by cash, they are more about group interests, not personal gain. I could easily see Bloomberg proposing that all restaurants in NY be kosher. Can't blame a guy for trying.

  20. St. Louis could be in a difficult position if airports are important in determining what cities become winners and what one become losers. It has a huge airport that was the major hub for TWA. After taking over TWA, American Airlines gradually reduced its operations to the point that the airport is no longer one of its hubs and most of the remaining flights use smaller regional jets. While Southwest Airlines has built up its operations at St. Louis, the airport remains significantly underutilized, with one of its five concourses having been shut down.

Back when the airport was still busy, the city decided it needed expansion and spent over a billion dollars on a new runway. Building the runway required destroying an entire neighborhood and not surprisingly generated a huge amount of controversy. By the time it was finished, the decline in airport traffic rendered it completely unnecessary. Very few flights use the runway today, because it's far too isolated from the terminal.

  21. Question: "Where are black Americans moving if they leave the inner cities"?

The trend is for whites to re-populate and gentrify older close-in neighborhoods with detached houses. Blacks, along with Mexicans, move to entry-level outer suburbs, which one might call otherwise failed suburbs.

Motivators behind this are the Section 8 gooberment rent subsidy program and the persistently high cost of gasoline.

I think the airport is one reason for Atlanta's rise in stature over the past 30 or so years. Hub status has been taken away from Cincinnati, which is probably why you don't fly there much anymore. There have been many years where it is the most expensive airport in the country to fly out of. Thus many people I know (myself included) fly out of Dayton, Louisville, or Lexington. It has lost a lot of air traffic and thus they're closing terminals. Northern Kentucky, Indiana, and of course Ohio all want a piece of the regional pie. Hence why I-275 is the largest loop in the country. Indiana lobbied for a little bit of it to pass through their state even though it's well past the type of growth typically seen around loops.

  28. Steve, how about an analysis of school performance before and after they have been taken over by a larger political entity. Detroit is flirting with a state takeover. I think state school takeovers were seen at one point as a remedy for failure of school districts to integrate. But now of course there are almost no white students in Detroit public schools.

It seems to me that there isn't very much that the state can do. In Oakland we have a similar threat hanging over us. If the local authorities don't do better, California will take over our police department.

About the only place where a state takeover has had positive results was when the Louisiana National Guard arrived in the aftermath of Katrina. An escalation in force makes sense, but what do you get with an escalation in school curricula?

If the problem in Chicago or Detroit schools is inferior learning, what can the state do that hasn't already been tried? Will they locate and employ some of those 'Superman' teachers? Will they bring in the latest iGadget?

State administration makes some sense if local corruption or incompetence is the problem, but these central city schools fail because they are filled with students who are not any good at learning. Or am I wrong?

  29. Has Rahm learned from Israel? More likely from 1000s of yrs of Jewish history.

More important question is 'have white people learning anything from the Jews?'

Why is white power/interests so hopeless in this country? It's because whites are not allowed to have an enemy. Whites must see everyone as a friend and try to win them over--even people who are sworn enemies of whites. Whites can't identify any group as an enemy and go after it. This is why conservatives prefer foreign policy because the us-vs-them 'get the enemy' politics is still allowed against Iran, Russia, and etc. But at home, whites must try to love everyone. If they see any group as the enemy, they are labeled as 'racist' and evil.

In contrast, non-whites and Jews are allowed to have enemies and vilify that enemy as the source of all evils in the world. So, they have a target to go after. They can focus all the energies of the 'left' on that target. The American right, in contrast, has no target because it's not allowed to, and so its energies never come together.

Jews understood this for a long time, and they mastered the art of coalition building, something Republicans never really did because they came to rely on relying on the 'base', the core of which has been white anglos and then later anglo-ized ethnics. Jews got crafty and creative whereas GOP got lazy by falling back on the white majority, which is now dwindling at rapid pace.

In the first half of the 20th century, Jews knew that there weren't enough blacks and browns for them to use against whites. So, Jews didn't go after 'white privilege'. They went after 'northern wasp privilege' and tried to woo many white groups. Back then, Jews encouraged white ethnics to hate white northern wasps as the snobby overlords whose country clubs and higher institutions kept the 'dagos, micks, polacks, russkies, etc' out. Jews also relied on southern whites to use against northern wasp elites. Jews told southern whites that they are being oppressed by yankee wasp overlords. Also, Jews allied with northern liberal wasps--always so self-critical and/or narcissistic in their higher do-goody neo-puritanical principles--against conservative establishmentarian wasps. This became the basis for the FDR coalition that won five straight elections until Eisenhower won in 52.
The thing is it was effective because (1) Jews identified the enemy--northern wasp privilege--and demagogued hatred against it and (2) Jews made alliances with just about any group--even southern whites--to bring down and weaken this northern wasp elite power. Back then, southern whites were what Mexicans are to Jews today. Jews may not have liked Southern whites but understood southern resentment about yankee power, and Jews fanned that resentment, which is why few Hollywood movies prior to the 50s are anti-southern.

  30. St. Louisan here.

St. Louis the city proper is far closer to the Chicago/DC model of "chase the blacks out on the sly" than it is to becoming Detroit. The incumbent white mayor was just elected to an unprecedented fourth term, and he succeeded two straight black mayors, the first was a quintessential black power black, and the second was an honorary white oreo.

The "Prince Georges County MD" or "South Suburban Cook County" in St. Louis's case, i.e. the new dumping ground for ghetto blacks, is North St. Louis County. What helps the situation politically is that St. Louis County, a separate entity from St. Louis City, has a black elected county executive. It benefits both him and the white mayor of the city proper if blacks leave the city for North St. Louis County. Because it guarantees both their political futures.

People love money but real 'class' comes not with how much money you got but what kind of 'culture' and 'sensibility' you have. Cons had no say in that.

Bush II has lots of money but he he has no 'class', and even rich folks don't wanna hang with him.

In the past, to have class meant to be snobby. Now, to have class means to be 'tolerant'--in an intolerant PC way. When rich people go to parties, they wanna show off their class by talking about art, books, movies, values, and causes.
People with 'class' may have lots of money but they don't talk about money. That is so crass.

This is why libertarians and gop fail among yuppies. Yuppies want to exude 'class' than crass. All this GOP talk of money, money, money seems crass to them... though they love money and earn as much as they can.

  38. Steve -- I don't think Rahm will be successful, or even that he wants to be successful. The whole point of the US and the West is that is UNLIKE Israel. Not the Jewish thing; given that most Israelis and most prominent Israelis and Jews in the West are heavily secular; but that the Muslim world wishes to wipe out Israelis and Jews (and doesn't distinguish between the two).

Israel would LIKE to play the Rahm-Obama game, but the cost is being wiped out very soon.

Politically, Blacks have the vote and the social/political power, and control of the legal system. So no I think NYC, Chicago, and a bunch of other Tier 1 cities are doomed to Detroit status.

What, Black people will want to be moved out to some distant exurb without political concentration and high visibility and the ability to deliver massive votes (fraudulently or not?) Would Dems even consider diluting their massive vote pools and street armies of voters? No.

Elites across the West made a Faustian bargain. They grew massively (see Charles Murray) post-War, but not big enough on their own to run everything. So they imported lots of non-Whites, Muslims and Africans in Europe, Blacks and Mexicans here, to act as Landsknechten, mercenaries, to get them over the top. Well, now they have their mercenaries wanting to be "paid." And they can't pay them. The result, sacked cities. Just in slow-motion form, not Madgedburg Quarter.

Of course this costs money. People voted for Obama as my Brother observed for "Free Stuff," basically, and now those Sandra Flukes are finding their bank accounts raided to pay for Shanequa. And Jamal. Cue riots and protests -- the only way to make people enraged is steal their money, as Machiavelli observed.

  39. It's not economical to keep some of these schools in operation; lots of overhead, too few students. It's a logical move. The part where "Caucasians" aren't being killed as they're moved along "gang lines" shows the lunacy of some of these discussions. Moving groups from one school to another causes problems since one gang now gets put into another gang's territory. So now some people expect the Board of Education members to familiarize themselves with what gang is which, determine the gang affiliations of the students, and assign them accordingly. Only about 8% of the students are of the caucasoid variety but this group pays most of the money to fund the school system. They can pay for it but can't use it.
No matter how much Rahm or anyone else bends over backwards to cater to blacks they'll sooner or later still scream waaysiss. It's a lesson for others, and that is don't even bother to try. In Rahm's case the classist part is probably more accurate; he prefers the 'right' sort of people. A large portion of city employees are black, including teachers, creating a large black middle class due to government employment ; they're not leaving.
It's been government policy to break up the concentrations of lumpen-ghetto types and farm them out to other areas where theoretically they'll become birds of another feather, in the process getting free housing that's better than those who have worked for a living. We know how that's worked out. They don't disappear, they're just pushed onto somebody else. Fears that there'll be a black shortage, that Chicago will become a whitetopia, are groundless.

  40. A poster wondered about: "future possibility on the next Detroit"

If you are looking into migration patterns of poor Blacks, check into how section 8 works in that town as that is what is propelling the migration. A documentary "Spanish Lake" was made about it. And towns like Vallejo Ca and various small towns in Pa are starting to notice the connection between recent shootings, migration of poor people from big city slums, and the tool used to finance it Section 8. You rarely see actual articles but if you read the comments section of local town newspapers you start to see they are blaming Section 8.

But poor Blacks are not the story any more IMO. Poor whites are beginning to act like the Blacks of the 1960s. And there there are the new immigrants who at some point in the future will be 100% US citizens(which Charles Murray has commented on), unskilled and un assimilated just like the great migration Blacks to northern cities and the Arab immigrants to France. Their parents were well behaved and productive, but their children are not.

Detroit on the other hand might have stabilized.

Memphis is in a dangerous situation now. In addition to being a second or third tier city, it doesn't have the same kind of sprawling, high value suburbs that Chicago or Detroit have, which outnumber the populations of their core cities. The suburbs are small and don't have parallel infrastructure like Detroit suburbs. A recent court ruling has consolidated the city schools and suburban schools into a majority black county district. The suburbs are trying to withdraw from the county district, but blacks are pouring into the suburbs anyway. Memphis is just north of the Mississippi Delta region, the largest geographical area in the country that is overwhelmingly black. Regional white flight may occur, leaving the Memphis area as an extension of the Delta region.

We may see metastasizing black third world areas across the South as whites abandon jurisdictions that come under black political control. Georgia has already experienced a lot of white flight and is close to being taken over by a black dominated Democratic party. Virginia is in a bad situation too as it fills up with Asian and Hispanic immigrants in addition to the large black population.

This is what drives me crazy. Power is supposed to flow from the barrel of a gun, yet conservatives in the US are cowed without the force of arms directed against them. Yes I know the government and most institutions are bad, but they are not using force of arms to keep conservatives down.

In fact conservatives are FREE to vote for politicians and policies to promote their worldview. Yet they are too afraid to express openly what those beliefs are, and end up never opposing the very system that is putting them down. And even with demographic change, conservatives could have still been a viable voting block over the past two decades.

Even if you look at the situation from the civilian point of view, conservatives are armed to the teeth when compared to the left. Therefore if the political situation has become unbearable, they should have had no problem taking to the streets, like the left did, and making demands.

Not sure I've previously heard of this particular exercise in world peace, love, and harmony. The Wikipedia article on the Deir Yassin massacre seems pretty detailed.

Sounds like an attack on a village by two undisciplined terrorist Israeli militias turned into a massacre, with perhaps 25 killed in cold blood. Some confusion about casualty numbers may have occured because afterwards a number of observers found around 200 dead, including women and children, many probably collateral damage during the attack, don't you know.

But whatever the numbers and exactly how they were dispatched, it seems there was a massacre at a critical point in the early history of Israel and the Palestinians:

"...whole families were gunned down during the fighting."

"Everyone had reason to spread the atrocity narrative. The Irgun and Lehi wanted to frighten Arabs into fleeing; the Arabs wanted to provoke an international response; the Haganah wanted to tarnish the Irgun and Lehi; and the Arabs and the British wanted to malign the Jews."

I used to wonder the same thing. Then I came to the conclusion that my premises were wrong. Most white Americans do not share the worldview of those of us who post here. The vast majority are fine with stuff like anti-discrimination laws. The general population has drank the Kool-Aid, I'm sad to say.

One of the core features of American civilization is celebration of fair play and a belief that everyone deserves a chance. We love underdogs and people who succeed on their merits, not birth. This works well as a way to encourage circulation of talent in more homogenous populations, and was probably a necessary corrective to imported European class stratification in the 18th-19th centuries, but I'm afraid it's become our Achilles heel. Most decent Americans just instinctively feel that blacks, Mexicans, etc. "deserve a chance" if they are willing to work for it. The idea that people are simply born more stupid or more violent has always been hard for most Americans to accept. Empirical evidence to the contrary has a hard time gaining purchase.

  92. A few notes:
    - I haven't been to that many U.S. airports, but I was surprised at how ghetto Dulles is. I thought D.C. had money, and yet they somehow found a way to make an international airport more rundown than Newark.

    - That Cincy/KY airport? I'm from there and I still don't think anyone has any idea what they were thinking. Denver got away with that stupid move though, so maybe they were more unlucky than clueless.

    - I was by Memphis to go to an eatery and the story I tell everyone about my drive there was "slum-slum-slum-Elivs' Home-slum-slum-slum"

Anyway, Rahm does seem to be taking a page from the book of Bloomberg and trying to make his city as unlivable as possible, which squeezes out the 'undesirables' first. Surprisingly Cleveland, with it's nominally black mayor and huge black population seems keen on the idea as well: more screwball laws that hit the lower classes the hardest and more section 8 housing in the aging white suburbs.

  93. There are some rough areas in Phoenix, but nothing to even compare to Detroit, Houston, Baltimore (missing from SBPDL's list) and the rest. What people think of as "Phoenix" is actually the Greater Metro Area, including Scottsdale, Gilbert, and Anthem, some of the nicest cities in America to live in.

If an illegal amnesty passes, that might be a different story, but for now Phoenix is a nice place to live. As Steve said before, its LA culture with OC politics.

  94. "Memphis had a large German-American set of people in the 19th century. The Germantown municipality is still mostly white".

I grew up in Germantown and my parents have lived there for over thirty years. It's about as Scots-Irish as most places are in the Southern US. Most of the regional German settlement was in Eastern Arkansas and the Missouri boot heel.

"As of August 2011, Germantown is exploring the option of establishing its own municipal school district in response to a pending merger of Memphis City and Shelby County Schools".

The future of the Memphis Metro area hinges on this. There are six other suburbs trying to do the same, but the black population wants the suburban tax revenues and to rule over all the suburbs with a newly gerrymandered Shelby County School Board that gives primacy (+2 seats) to the black residents formerly under the MCS charter even though they don't qualify for even +1 seat with only a 2% countywide majority over Whites. If the school board prevents the suburbs from having their own sovereign school districts, it will be the deciding factor for Memphis becoming Detroit South.

While there will be no mass exodus, newly arriving Whites will instead move to the surrounding counties and Whites with children under an inner city dominated school board will start to look for an exit after a few years of political shenanigans that will occur. Once the outer ring suburbs are vacated by the remaining professional class, the revenue stream for the entire county will dry up, and it will be another Detroit in 30 years.

Former MCS school board member Dr. Kenneth T Whalum, Jr., has been a voice of reason on the issue, but Memphis residents now consider him the enemy. Suburban residents are fighting this with all they can muster (while going out of their way to pretend it's not a racial issue), but the decision will likely be decided by a judge on civil rights grounds. The City of Memphis is using every trick in the book to force the suburbs into the new county district.

Never been to Memphis, but the above situation describes something an order of magnitude worse than Detroit. While Detroit has a number of dysfunctional suburbs like Inkster and Southfield, the vast majority of them are quite prosperous and are in no worry of being taken over by Detroit. The overall trend in the region has been for the suburbs/state to get a greater say in running Detroit's affairs.

Cleveland is paranoid about turning into another Detroit. Its leaders pay very close attention to Detroit's dysfunctions. For example, Detroit has too many decrepit homes that it can ever hope to tear down. OTOH, Cleveland has an aggressive program to tear down abandoned structures and sell them to homeowners in adjacent lots, which gives them more living space/an actual lawn in the city. The statistics show Cleveland has almost almost as much population as Detroit. But there's no question that the city is much healthier. There are actually viable middle class white neighborhoods in Cleveland. It's not the most happening city, but there are decent places for young people who want to experience urban living. Urban living in Detroit's Midtown/Downtown gets a lot of hype, but is completely impractical and also dangerous.

  98. The basic logic of Israeli politics is that the Palestinians are Arabs and that, while Israel is a small place, the Arab World is a huge place, so there are lots of other places for the local Arabs to move to, away from Israel.

Not quite. The basic logic of Israeli politics is that the Palestinians and the Arabs are a mortal threat and that if Israel wishes to survive, as it is, it must be strong and controlled by Jews. The Israelis might gladly move the border so the Israeli Arab towns are in the West Bank and not Israel (the Arabs would stay exactly where they are). Lieberman has proposed this. That is why they gave up Gaza - just to be rid of them but no Arab in Gaza was moved, except Jews who were moved out.

  99. Once again. Semite = Palestinian and/or Jewish. Semite = Jewish and/or Palestinian. Hence, Semite = Jewish and Semite = Palestinian.

  100. I assume the history of Memphis's Germantown is similar to Nashville's Germantown, except that the latter is closer to the old city center:

    Nashville's Historic Germantown

    By Jan Duke, About.com Guide

The Shawnee tribe of Indians was the original inhabitants of the North Nashville region followed by the Chickasaw and Cherokee tribes who made it a hunting ground for all.
( and for each other. )

    ...

Shortly after the area was incorporated into the Nashville city limits, in 1865, a large number of German immigrants joined an already booming population of German residents and began moving into the grand houses, worker's cottages and shotgun homes, shopping at the corner stores and attending services at neighborhood churches.

Assumption Catholic Church was dedicated in 1859. In 1864, while the Union Army held Nashville, Assumption Church was occupied and pillaged by the soldiers. Having survived for over 145 years, Nashville’s second oldest Catholic Church is now experiencing a rebirth ...

    ...

At the turn of the century, merchants and political figures used the backyard of one of the city’s first plantations, located on the current Werthan Bag Building site, as a playground. Burns Island Race Track preceded Morgan Park as the area’s gathering place and played host to the richest horse race in the world, at that time. Morgan Park’s history dates to 1909, when the Nashville Park Board purchased Frederick Laitenberger’s German beer garden, which occupied the site.

Roots of 1920's Prohibition here. Too many saloons and sporting houses, often owned by Catholics.

When the gates closed and the jockeys made their way out of the neighborhood, the area was turned into the city’s first horticultural garden. But even the magic of the garden couldn’t prevent the neighborhood from slipping into decline.

According to Davidson County Historian and Oktoberfest founder, John Connelly, as streetcar lines expanded and advancement was made in motor transportation
( A fancy way of saying "automobiles" ), shortly after the turn of the century, there was a trend for older residents ( i.e., white folks ) to move away from the ‘walk-to-town’ areas.

World War I, however, dealt the final blow when services at neighborhood churches stopped being conducted in German. After World War I, the German societies disbanded and subscribers banned the once popular German newspapers. This attitude did much to destroy the feeling of unity in Germantown.

Nearly hitting rock bottom, a group of urban pioneers began reclaiming Germantown in the late 1970s. By buying up vacant lots and entire city blocks, the pioneers began restoring the neighborhood to its former prestige.

Nashville's Germantown is still a rather dodgey gentrifying island in an otherwise bad part of town.

Anyway, one reason for this Germantown stuff is to correct the impression some Istevies have that almost all 19th century German Americans or Irish Catholics settled in northern states. It is true that the South got a smaller percentage of Mediterranean Euro. immigrants than the North.

  101. The Dallas Public School system is 95 percent non-white.

Case closed. Whites can run and create thriving suburbs, but the black/brown undertow always follows.

  103. In response to:

"The pushing out of blacks was started by Daley the Younger who closed housing projects and encouraged developers. Clearly he decided that the city needed more middle class tax providers than lower class tax consumers. It seems to be working."

    fnn said...

"Yes, Daley was big on gentrification and the accompanying replacement of blacks by SWPL/Yuppies and Gays. Daley was also an early and especially ardent supporter of illegal immigration from Mexico. So there was an obvious two-pronged attack against the city's black population that almost everyone pretended not to notice."

This is all correct. Rahm Emanuel didn't just wake up one day and decide to start emulating Mayor Bloomberg. Chicago's "whitening" was initiated by the Daley Machine, and the dance has been going on for at least a decade.

Chicago still suffers from a bad national reputation -- nationally, it's seen as a Detroit-style hellhole, but with a few fat, mustachioed, blue collar Bears Super Fans of Polish-American descent still roaming its otherwise ghetto fabulous environs -- but under Daley, it really started transforming into SWPL central.

The whole Daley love affair with los illegales was a smart political move. The Daley Machine basically represented the historic white ethnic coalition (middle class Irish, Italian, Pole, Greek, etc.) that had been supplanted by the Harold Washington (Chicago's 1st black mayor) coalition of wealthy white liberals/Jews and underclass blacks in the early 1980s. After narrowly beating out black opponents in his first two reelection bids, Daley bought off the black community and the wealthy whites/Jews. But he knew that they would always have the potential to cause the Machine problems, so he worked overtime to bring Mexicans into the otherwise white ethnic Machine coalition.

I'm not close enough to Chicago business/politics anymore to know what's really going down with the Rahm administration. From afar, I haven't figured out if Rahm is really a just another Machine guy, or if he represents the triumph of the the wealthy white liberals/Jews over the Machine (i.e., they have so much juice now, they no longer need to play ball with the Machine).

  104. That's all you got?

First, there is no "Dallas public school system". There are two school districts that include parts of the city: DISD and Richardson ISD. DISD (which serves most of Dallas plus portions of many neighboring cities, including majority-Black cities to the south of Dallas, and unincorporated areas) is 30% Black, which is awfully different from Detroit. RISD includes Northeast Dallas. The one RISD high school located in Dallas is 40% White and 40% Black.

Additionally, there are two cities that form an island within the Dallas city limits. These cities and their school dictrict (HPISD) are almost all-White. These cities anchor large White community. Unlike in Detroit, the rich and powerful (George W. Bush, Ross Perot, Mark Cuban) live within the city proper.

Moreover, Whites outnumber Blacks in the City of Dallas! How is that consistent with a claim that the city has already been "Detroited"?
