Uncle Ruslan |
Graham E. Fuller is a former vice chairman of the National Intelligence Council at the CIA, a former senior political scientist at RAND, and a current adjunct professor of history at Simon Fraser University. He is the author of numerous books about the Middle East, including The Future of Political Islam. He has lived and worked in the Muslim world for nearly two decades.
Wikipedia also claims Fuller was CIA station chief in Kabul and instrumental in starting the
Iran-Contra Affair.

Graham Fuller, ex-Agency and
ex-father-in-law of Uncle Ruslan |
So, Tamerlan Tsarnaev was just following a family tradition when he married an upper middle class American doctor's daughter. American women can't get enough of these Tsarnaev men, can they?
In an e-mail to
The Back Channel, Fuller confirmed that his daughter had been married to Uncle Ruslan, who is a lawyer big in Central Asian oil and gas negotiations, but the pair got divorced in 1999.
Fuller made an interesting observation about his ex-in-laws that supports
my surmise of a few days ago that the pan-Islamism of the Bomb Brothers and the Bomb Mom was one logical (but not logically necessary) outcome of their propensity for inter-ethnic marriage:
According to Fuller, the suspects’ mother Zubeidat Tsarnaeva was not an ethnic Chechen herself, but Dagestani, and so the family spoke the couple’s common language Russian, not Chechen, at home. “People who lose their native language (identity) sometimes are more fanatic in some respects,” he observed.
I suspect that Tamerlan and Dzhokhar might have been content with Chechen nationalism, with its impressive history of violence, but their mixed ancestry and Tamerlan's American convert wife made pan-Islamism a more appropriate outlet for their aggressive energies.
By the way, Fuller's new book is a memoir. Here's his
blurb for it:
Three Truths and a Lie.
This latest book by author Graham E. Fuller is the compelling tale of Luke, a Korean adoptee who comes to an American family at age one and who gradually loses his life's way - to die from crack cocaine at age 21. It is also a story of his adoptive father, a CIA officer, who offers an unsparing and vivid account of his own efforts - wise, misguided, passionate, naive, creative, ultimately unsuccessful - to save his son.
Luke is warm, likeable, funny, quick to win friends - and a skilled deceiver, able to impress others with a seeming maturity and urbanity. But the image he works to create for himself is increasingly belied by the realities of his life. Fuller writes of his poignant quest through multiple crises to understand who Luke really was - against the black hole Luke's life created for his family around him - and the search for meaning. The fast-moving action unfolds against a broad international backdrop from Afghanistan to Latin America.
We explore the mysteries of adoption, identity, addiction - and grace.

Fuller, Tucker, Walker - all English surnames meaning the same thing.
yet another CIA asset...and he was no doubt manipulated by "Misha", another CIA agent, into the bombing and thus scaring americans into allowing more money down the military/police state money pit.

What about the German name Voeller? Could it be a version of that?
the Bomb Brothers' Uncle Ruslan, the widely admired straight-talking tough guy who lives in Maryland.
Americans are so gullible. They are suckers for a foreigner who tells them what they want to hear.
(By they way, Ruslan Tsarnoff is a lawyer, a Russian, a Chechen ... speaking of gullible -- Steve?)
fuller's
Foreign adoption rackets are just another way to guilt trip more and more Americans into importing more of the Third World.
I've known a few affluent couples who adopted Russian orphans, Korean orphans, and orphans from other countries - every one of these couples' adoptees has caused them no end of grief. Know what I mean, GENE?
Listen now: I'm playing "Kumbaya" on the world's tiniest violin.
If it weren't for the bombing, this guy would make me think the world would be better if all Muslims were Chechen Muslims. I've travled all around the Middle East, and Muslims there seem disagreeably cagy: lying all the time, being overly polite. I wonder if it is common for most Muslims to be "straight shooters" like this uncle fella.
I think Joe McCarthy may have had the right instincts about the CIA back in the 1950s. What I'm referring to is easy to find. Also see Foseti blog and look up "Operation Mockingbird." Also see the DC Dave blog.
Also see a book written about the Vietnam War back in 1965, "Background to Betrayal"-a real-life account that bears a striking resemblance to Graham Greene's "The Quiet American."
How exactly is Uncle Ruslan Related? He is not Anzor's brother. Was he Zubeidat (Suleimanova?) Tsarnaeva's brother, or just some sort of cousin once removed?
Bomber-mama was very hot in the picture from the 80s. She had a sexy 80s rock star haircut like Madonna did back then.

It is sad to see Western and Russian culture being replaced by Islamic dictatorships in places like Turkey, Albania, the Caucuses, Syria, Lebanon, and Algeria. Only the Gulf states are being Westernized these days. In 1980s Dagestan apparently women walked the streets looking like Cyndi Lauper. Now they get beat up by thugs if they are not wearing veils.
You've written a lot of posts on this story.
But in the hinterland people just aren't talking about it, or seem to be much interested in it.
Of course we have many hinterlands, and maybe it is different in others.
The story just doesn't seem to be sparking much fire.
Good candidate for down the memory hole.
The people I've talked too seem more interested in the guy in prison who had five kids with the guards.
This latest book by author Graham E. Fuller is the compelling tale of Luke, a Korean adoptee who comes to an American family at age one and who gradually loses his life's way - to die from crack cocaine at age 21.
Ha ha ha ha. That is the second funniest thing I have heard all day.
Korean adoptees screwing up the way blacks and underclass whites do. Is that a man with an agenda?
You couldn't really make this up.
Anon.
American women can't get enough of these Tsarnaev men, can they?
It could be worse. How about a low rent, black Jamaican pothead?
Finally giving John Boehner something serious to cry about.
Can you get a PayPal link going?
But in the hinterland people just aren't talking about it, or seem to be much interested in it.
Living in the hinterlands myself, I can think of a few reasons for that:
The MSM hasn't really settled on a narrative and started beating us over the head with it yet, so people don't have anything solid to absorb or reject yet. First the bombers were Caucasian -- practically Timothy McVeigh, maybe even Boy Scouts -- and now they did it because they were mistreated for their foreignness (non-whiteness). People just aren't sure what the story is to talk about.
This is going to sound bad, but: to people in the rural hinterlands, places like Boston and NYC are practically foreign countries. We certainly don't have much in common with the people who live there, especially the kind who go to marathons (something I haven't seen discussed much: how many foreigners were at the marathon? I'd assume the Boston Marathon is an international event, so it's hardly the place to bomb if you're targeting only Americans). So this doesn't feel much different than, say, a couple of Swedes killing some people in England.
As I said, I know that sounds bad. But that's the natural result of multiculturalism and the way our elites -- concentrated in that part of the east coast -- have used diversity to tear down national unity. If farmers in Kansas don't get emotional about some SWPL joggers getting killed in Boston, who's fault is that?
9/11 was different because the terrorists made it clear that they were attacking "America" as a whole, plus 3000>3, and the diversity-driven divisions are just a lot worse than they were 12 years ago. In 2001, it was still possible to think our government would wake up and get things like the border and student visa programs under control. It's not possible to believe that anymore; the only question is whether they don't do it on purpose or out of malevolence. So even if you get worked up about it, then what? We know nothing will happen -- except for trying to find a way to blame us -- and it'll just be a matter of time until it happens again. But it won't be out here in nowheresville, so....
sunbeam, I think the whole story is alien to Flyover Country. Can you see someone like Rick Perry "locking down" Dallas.
A lot of the country would probably think that the Blue State idiots are only reaping what they've sown. As one living here in MA, I tend to agree.
But you really have to live here to understand the-over-the-top narcissism of SWPL marathon crowd, which is part of why the story has remained Page 1, above the fold for 2 weeks. A woman I know ran the Boston Marathon once, and since the bombing her facebook page has been gushing with long screeds about how being runner defines her and I could have been her at the finish line, blah blah blah. She went to the finish line yesterday "the first day I could even think about visiting the site" to have a good cry.
Gag...
The Iran-Contra affair was pretty devious and very embarrassing for the US when it came to light. Being wily and cunning seems to be the stock-in-trade of most intelligence services and foreign policy in general. Whenever there's a pan type movement of any sort- religious, ideological, economic, ethnic, geographic- there's usually a country that puts itself out as the leader of it, the first amongst equals. For Islam there's a number of contenders. Saudi Arabia, our great ally, pours out a lot of money around the world into influencing the thinking of Muslims everywhere, all the while playing a game of making sure the royal family stays in power as the guardian of Mecca whilst personally living scandalously high on the hog. Religious zealots make good cannon fodder against designated targets of the US and it's ally SA, against Russia in Afghanistan and in the Caucasus, in Bosnia, Kosovo, Libya, Syria. Being as it's an idea it can't be safely contained within borders; encouraging it as a tool against others is really playing with matches.

Hunsdon: Sir, I think that your thesis calls out for further research. Have you read nothing on the subject? Steve has been serving up free ice cream for over a week now on the Chechens, and their national ethos.
They are a hard, vicious, violent people. Per Solzhenitsyn, they were the one nation that wouldn't roll over, even in the GULag. In many ways, those are admirable traits.
Ah, but Uncle Ruslan seems reasonable!

"I presented CIA’s Graham Fuller as one of the top culprits in my State Secrets Privilege Case when the government invoked the State Secrets Privilege and several additional gag orders to cover up the FBI’s investigations and files pertaining to CIA-NATO terror operations in Central Asia & the Caucasus since the mid-1990s. Guess what? I provided this information to the US media long before it became public in 2008 via my website and this website. Not a single media outlet (including quasi and pseudo ones) was willing to touch this. And this, despite of all the gag orders, state secrets privilege invocations, congressional gag orders … you name it. I could name more than a dozen publications that said: ‘no way.’
Not only that. I have been covering one of the main CIA operation figures in Central Asia & the Caucasus-Imam Fethullah Gulen, and this Turkish Imam’s relationship and official Connections to CIA’s Graham Fuller. I’ve been doing this since 2009. Let me provide you with a few explosive examples and excerpts. First a few excerpts from over two years ago published at Boiling Frogs Post:
Turkish Intel Chief Exposes CIA Operations via Islamic Group in Central Asia
First of all, there have been tens if not hundreds of articles establishing Graham Fuller as one of Gulen’s official references to the court for his residency, you can view some of these here, here, here. This quote comes from Foreign Policy Journal:
Fethullah Gulen became a green card holder despite serious opposition from FBI and from Homeland Security Department. Former CIA officers (formally and informally) such as Graham Fuller and Morton Abromovitz were some of the prominent references in Gulen’s green card application.
After years of investigating him the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security, due to his guardian angels in the State Department and the CIA, are prevented from bringing an indictment against him, so they try to kick him out of the US. But once again Gulen’s CIA angels step in and portray Gulen as a scholar, despite the fact that Fethullah Gulen doesn’t even have a high-school diploma and never went beyond the 5th grade. Among his angels who vouched for him were Graham Fuller, George Fidas, and Morton Abramowitz.
You may remember one of these foreign policy makers from my State Secrets Privilege Gallery and my under oath testimony in the Krikorian case. Here is a quote from Graham A. Fuller, former Deputy Director of the CIA’s National Council on Intelligence:
‘The policy of guiding the evolution of Islam and of helping them against our adversaries worked marvelously well in Afghanistan against the Red Army. The same doctrines can still be used to destabilize what remains of Russian power, and especially to counter the Chinese influence in Central Asia.’"

IDK what Emma Lazarus's looks have to do with anything, but the Lazarus family was of Sephardic (Portuguese Jewish) descent (she was related to the famous Justice Cardozo) so it's not surprising that she resembles other Mediterranean people.
...who gradually loses his life's way - to die from crack cocaine at age 21.
It couldn't have been that gradual if he was dead by 21. What the earliest he could have started using? Maybe 14, so he had all of 7 years to "gradually" decline to the point he was dead.
OT, but a general question: if populations have been under selection for some particular trait -- beauty, intelligence, height, or whatever -- and that selection is relaxed, will the population gradually beome less beautiful, intelligent, tall, etc.?
I ask because of the general idea of reversion to the mean, which is big on this blog, and because there was an experiment back in the 1930's (I think) with fruit flies at Columbia U. in which they selected for bristle number. After many generations the average bristle number increased rather dramatically, but when selection was relaxed they gradually reverted to the wild type.
Why wouldn't this apply to humans over the long-run?
(What got me thinking on this is that there seem to be more beautiful women in 1930's Hollywood movies than today.)
Actually, the lady in the picture looks a lot like Joan Jett ("I luuuv rock and roll!")
@sf - "How exactly is Uncle Ruslan Related? He is not Anzor's brother."
he's the father's, anzor's, brother according to foreign policy.
Ruslan reminded me of Alan 'Harry Roat jnr. from Scarsdale' Arkin, Capt. Yossarian in the Catch-22 movie.
Do We Need New Global Institutions?
I would have thought Steve would have caught this by now but perhaps not:
http://www.news.com.au/world-news/wiretap-caught-jihad-phone-call/story-fndir2ev-1226631205578
"Republican Michael McCaul spoke a day after US officials disclosed that Russian authorities secretly recorded a telephone conversation in 2011 in which one of the two brothers suspected in the attack, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, vaguely discussed jihad with his mother."
the tsarnaevs seem to have come to the u.s. from dagestan in 2003 via turkey (where they apparently spent ten days):
Boston bombings suspect spent 10 days in Turkey: Interior minister
From the AP,Russia caught bomb suspect on wiretap:
"[Tamerlan and his mother] discussed the possibility of Tamerlan going to Palestine, but he told his mother he didn't speak the language there, according to the officials, who reviewed the information Russia shared with the U.S.
...
"Authorities have said they've seen no connection between the brothers and a foreign terrorist group. Dzhohkar told FBI interrogators that he and his brother were angry over wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and the deaths of Muslim civilians there."
Chickens coming home to roost.
i'm wondering if his uncle's CIA connections might have led to the boy bomber being given a second chance.
The other thing that doesn't get mentioned much is the bombs were timed to kill white people.
The other thing that doesn't get mentioned much is the bombs were timed to kill white people.
I have wondered whether the bombs were deliberately set off well after (4 hours) the race started.
From the AP, Russia caught bomb suspect on wiretap:

And unsurprisingly buried deep in the story.
"OT, but a general question: if populations have been under selection for some particular trait -- beauty, intelligence, height, or whatever -- and that selection is relaxed, will the population gradually beome less beautiful, intelligent, tall, etc.?"
It might depend on what the basis for selection changes to.
For example if you have selection on overall attractiveness (based on a collection of traits including height, health, looks, intelligence etc) then you may be actually selecting on the basis of low genetic load.
Say a population specifically selected for height for some reason - maybe the extra leverage was good for throwing javelins at mammoths or something - and then stopped but replaced it with selecting for low genetic load - would that lead to them becoming shorter over time?
I can't see why it would.
On the other hand if they switched from selecting on height to selecting on IQ or to having arranged marriages based on property regardless of individual traits then i assume they'd get shorter.
.
"(What got me thinking on this is that there seem to be more beautiful women in 1930's Hollywood movies than today.)"
My take is they kept the faces and breasts from the 1930s but lost the hips. Modern Hollywood seems to prefer boyish hips. There may be other explanations for that.
A bit inappropriate but mama bomber looks like all the dirtiest girlfriends i ever had rolled into one. I wonder if that has anything to do with her later conversion to jihad-mama?
You raise an interesting point about the male Tsarnaevs marrying white American women.
As you've probably noticed, the men from these darker ethnicities (e.g. Middle-Eastern) tend to be handsome and attractive and get a lot of attention from women. There are plenty of white American men who can't get any women, let alone start families with them at 25. Nonetheless, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, a recent immigrant with bad English, had no problems marrying a very pretty white American girl.
There are also stories floating around of him being successful in nightclubs where he was a popular party guy.
I've seen the same thing in my local nightclubs and it's definitely true that these dark-featured men from the Middle East get a lot of interest from women. Peter Frost has done studies showing that women respond strongly to dark, swarthy men and perceive them as more masculine.
It seems that some ethnicities "export" highly sought-after males while others "export" sought-after females, such as Asians. Asian women are popular and in high demand by all kinds of men in America, thanks to being feminine, slender, and attractive.
Would you like to take a look at these phenomena in future posts?
In addition to being swarthy, Tamerlan Tsarnaev was 6'3" and had a reputation for toughness. Perhaps those features also played a role in his popularity with American women.
The Chechens aren't garden-variety Middle Easterners, and their genetics are somewhat different as well. I doubt you would confuse many Chechens for Saudis or vice versa, and people from those groups aren't particularly close on a plot of autosomal DNA similarity.
The Armenian who is supposed to have radicalized Tammy Tsarnaev has been tracked. Who knew he was real?
According to the New York Review of Books, the man's father is an Armenian Christian (tautology), his mom a Ukrainian and he himself is a convert to Islam.
The surname, Allakhverdov, is neither Armenian nor Slavic. Well, the -ov ending is Russian, but in the post-Soviet context that says little about ethnicity. The Allakh part seems to refer to Allah. He was born in Baku. My guess: his paternal grandfather might have been an Azeri Muslim, his paternal grandmother an Armenian Christian. So there might have been some Islam in his family history before his conversion. That would make said conversion a little less weird.
Fuller is an English surname.
Or Scots-Irish .
"I doubt you would confuse many Chechens for Saudis or vice versa..."
A lot of Middle Easterners have some sub-Saharan admixture, which presumably comes from the slave trade. This is especially obvious in Yemen and Egypt, but one can see it further afield.
The Caucasus is a mountainous, relatively inaccessible refuge for a lot of archaic stuff. It has language families which have died out elsewhere. It still has some paganism. It has blood feuds, bride stealing and open tribalism. It has also preserved the Middle Eastern physical type. If Swedes and Norwegians are the most extreme examples of the European type, then I'd say that Armenians are the most extreme example of the Middle Eastern type. And the other Caucasus natives aren't far behind.
More on the NY Review of Books story on the blond Armenian Muslim who radicalized Tamerlan:
In the comments to that piece someone linked to a Russian Wikipedia article on a KGB major-general who died in 1968 and who had the exact same name as the blond Armenian Muslim named by uncle Ruslan: Mikhail Allakhverdov. The Russian wiki says that the KGB major-general was an ethnic Armenian.
I've never in my life met any Armenians who had un-Armenian names. The thought of an ethnic Armenian with the word Allah in his surname boggles my mind. Yet today I've learned of the existence of two such people. And they have the same first name too. One is a long-ago deceased KGB major-general, the other a convert to Islam in New England who is linked to the Tsarnaev case.
What are the odds that the New England Armenian Mikhail Allakhverdov is a grandson of the KGB Mikhail Allakhverdov? I don't know. Maybe that name is more common among Armenians than I'm assuming?
Uh, I hate to break this to you, but Messianic Jew is another name for Christian.
"As you've probably noticed, the men from these darker ethnicities (e.g. Middle-Eastern) tend to be handsome and attractive and get a lot of attention from women. There are plenty of white American men who can't get any women, let alone start families with them at 25."
To the extent it is accurate that women find such ethnicities relatively attractive, such a phenomenon could easily be merely the result of a combination of two factors: (1) the prevalent anti-white propaganda in the media and the culture, and (2) the fact that Northern European men are giving away their power (open borders being an obvious example, but more generally there is a lack of solidarity which translates to lack of power in this rough and tumble world).
As a side note: Zionist Jews work assiduously to undermine solidarity among the men of rival groups.
Allakhverdov seems a fairly common name .
By the way...

Mikhail Andreyevich Allakhverdov (1900-1968) was NKVD station chief in Kabul...It was an important post to thwart anti-Soviet infiltration into the Soviet
Muslim republics.
I've seen the same thing in my local nightclubs and it's definitely true that these dark-featured men from the Middle East get a lot of interest from women. Peter Frost has done studies showing that women respond strongly to dark, swarthy men and perceive them as more masculine.
Aren't women attractive to status and power, as well as to looks (perhaps even more so)?
I feel like I am seeing significantly more black men-white women couples in the last 3-4 years. Could the message of black success conveyed on television be a factor? It doesn't hurt that we have a black president--a white woman could think that her offspring could be presidential material.
A bit inappropriate but mama bomber looks like all the dirtiest girlfriends i ever had rolled into one. I wonder if that has anything to do with her later conversion to jihad-mama?
My thoughts exactly.
Note the slightly crazed look in her eyes. Drama queen to the bone...
"Allakhverdov seems a fairly common name."
I've done a few searches. Most bearers seem to be Azeris.
Tracey Ullman should play Bomb Mom. She could do her as the sister of her long-time character Chic, the cabdriver from Dirtistan, the ultimate Man with Gold Chains.

There's a specific type of politically correct middle-class girl who does this kind of thing as well. It's the politically correct religions equivalent of becoming a nun.
SWPL narcissism in the Boston marathon reached its zenith when crossing the finish line, as body parts flew around them, the SWPL runners were engrossed in checking the timers on their watches. Priorities, eh?
