Schumer v. Rubio: Which one looks smarter?

Trust me on immigration, guys -- no way
could Mr. Schumer put one over on me.
Do l look like some kind of doof?
Would I mislead you, Marco?

One way to get a sense of the likely political effects of the Gang of Eight's immigration bill is to think of it as a contest of brainpower between Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY) and Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL). In the long run, either the Democrat is going to have proved to have outsmarted the Republican or vice-versa. Which one would you bet on, Schumer or Rubio?

Commenter Zoink looks up the biographical evidence about the two main men of the immigration bill. From Wikipedia:
"Schumer attended public schools in Brooklyn, scoring 1600 on the SAT, and graduated as the valedictorian from James Madison High School in 1967.
"Schumer competed for Madison High on the It's Academic television quiz show.
"He attended Harvard College ... After completing his undergraduate degree, he continued to Harvard Law School, earning his Juris Doctor with honors in 1974."
Before recentering [SAT scores in 1995], only around 5-7 people a year got 1600 on the SAT each year. [In 1985-86, for example, nine students in the whole country got a 1600]. If Schumer isn't lying about this, he is certainly one of the 1000 or so smartest men in the USA.

Schumer has a career won-loss record in general elections of 15-0. Add in primaries, and he's 30-0 lifetime. He represents Wall Street's interests while also claiming to represent the middle class: that's not easy but his customers appear satisfied with his high-wire balancing act.
"Rubio attended South Miami Senior High School and graduated in 1989. He then attended Tarkio College for one year on a football scholarship from 1989 to 1990, before enrolling at Santa Fe Community College ... He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Florida in 1993, and his J.D. degree cum laude from the University of Miami School of Law in 1996."
Rubio did not graduate from Tarkio College because it was shut down by the federal government for acting as a "front" to scam the student loan system:
New York Times,
A College Acts in Desperation And Dies Playing the Lender
April 17, 1991
"Auditors found that the college was so desperate to increase enrollment and stay alive that it had dealt out loans and grants to ineligible students until it owed the Federal Government more than $22 million.
'Acting as a Front'
"In a scheme more often connected with beauty academies than accredited institutions of higher education, Tarkio set up illegitimate off-campus programs and signed up thousands of unprepared students, many of them whisked right off city streets. Most of these students dropped out and never repaid their loans, leaving Tarkio at one point with the highest loan default rate in the nation.
"'Basically what you had was a small college acting as a front,' said Kent Kraus, Dean of Institutional Advancement at Tarkio."

In conclusion, Schumer attended the most competitive college in the USA and 2nd most competitive law school and plausibly claims to have a 99.999 percentile IQ, while Rubio attended what by one measure was the single worst 4-year colleges in the USA:
"In 1986 Tarkio's loan default rate was 79 percent, the highest in the nation for four-year colleges. The average default rate is about 6 percent."

  6. Thanks, Zoink, great stuff.

I don't have an estimate for the average number of kids to get 1600s on the SAT before scoring was made easier in 1995, but I vividly remember a People Magazine profile of the five of the nine students who got a perfect score one year.

Oh, that was easy to find:

"Nine students out of 1.7 million—.000005 percent—got perfect SAT scores in 1985-86, and all of them were male. The test-givers won't divulge the names, but PEOPLE has tracked down five students with perfect SATs."

  7. What makes you so sure he *isn't* lying? Those things aren't public record, and the guy's a Northeasterner, one of the few parts of the country that like their politicians smart. You documented extensively Bush's ability to fake being dumb--who's to say Schumer isn't exaggerating intelligence (sure he got into good schools, but that's connections too), reflecting the different prejudices of their home regions?

More likely I think is the old double screw: Democrats want votes, Republicans want cheap labor. The business lobby tells Rubio what they want and he does it.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Schumer is clearly very intelligent, especially for a senator, but I'm be sceptical about the 1600 SAT score.

If he were that smart wouldn't he be bored out his mind as a politician?

Even so it would be nice if the Republicans countered him with one of their intellectual heavyweights, although since John Sununu lost his seat in 2006 it's hard to think of any who fit that description.

  9. The GOP is to political parties as Tarkio College is to universities.

  10. An 800 math score was not uncommon then but 800 on the verbal was. I got a 750 verbal in 1974 and was the only person in my prep school class over 700 and remember talk that it had gotten pretty rare to see verbal scores over 700 nationally. Bill Gates supposedly got 790/800.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I'd guess there's a 75% chance Schumer didn't really get 1600. His SAT scores were probably very high, and his friends and political allies started describing them as "outstanding," which gradually became "amazing," which eventually became "perfect," which people took literally to mean 1600. Then once that exaggerated claim got into the newspapers somewhere or the official record decades ago and Schumer didn't deny it, he was stuck. That's what always happens with CEOs who pad their resumes thirty years before it finally blows up into a scandal and they get fired.

For example, all the business articles and official bios of Viacom CEO Philippe Dauman claim he scored a perfect 1600 on the SAT at age 13(!!!) even though his later academic record in college was pretty unimpressive. It seems obvious that he lied to get some early job, and the lie has just been repeated for several decades now.

Still, Schumer certainly seems like a very smart guy, vastly smarter than Rubio. And it is certainly *possible* that Schumer actually scored a double 800...

  12. Schumer and Peter Schiff look a lot alike.

  13. Smarter? Not so obvious. Cunning, devious? Schumer, hands down.

  14. You can tell when they open their mouth.

I see what you mean. The guy is evil, brilliantly evil, right down to the psychopathic smile that never touches his eyes. He looks like an anti-Semitic caricature brought to life.

Which is kind of strange. There are guys like Henry Kissinger that are in the same IQ ballpark, perhaps smarter, but they don't radiate evil in the same way.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I frankly don't care who looks smarter or who America wants to claim is smarter. All I care about is how they will vote and the issues they will push for. Both will likely vote along party lines in favor of immigration, with Rubio voting as a liberal-lite typical neo-conservative. Its better than the Dems but still far from the Paleoconservative real solutions which need to be carried out.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Oh my goodness, after following your link Steve, I found that one of the 1600 kids is a real joy to be around.

"When asked, West has opinions on almost everything. The school's honor society, he has said, "represents the antithesis of all that is good and noble in humanity. The people who they think of as leaders are skilled at bootlicking and being sheepish." Sports? "The voyeurism in spectator sports is disgusting and counterproductive," he has declared. "The audience is essentially brain dead."

    Wow.

  20. You know it's a total waste.

He's done nothing with his life.

Sure he's made some bucks. Sorta.

But he hasn't lived a life of wretched excess like a Rock Star.

He made no contribution to knowledge. Achieved nothing.

If I didn't do a lot of reading I wouldn't even have recognized his name. A century from now he won't even be an obscure footnote.

I think Senators like Kennedy, Moynihan, Thurmond, Scoop Jackson, some more I'm too lazy to think of now, are going to be the ones historians write about (a pretty obscure thing to do).

Heck he really hasn't made a ton of money as these things go. I'm sure he does alright, but lots of people sleep on lots bigger piles of money at night.

Or maybe he is so smart he has covered his money trail, and has manipulated events like some mastermind for the past 30 years or so, and is laughing at all the dumb schmucks who can't figure it out.

    I somehow doubt it though.

This has nothing to do with his politics particularly, though I am not very fond of the positions he takes, and it is truly just my opinion.

But he is a total waste. If I were him, I'd have to evaluate my life as a total failure.

All that potential, and all he did was be a politician? And not an epic one?

I think it's fairer to assess Rubio's smartness, such as it is, by his performance in law school, where he did graduate cum laude. U Miami isn't a great law school, but it's got to be a lot harder to get into than Turkeyo (sp?) College.

    Man, you nailed it.

If the Democrats have a dream Republican candidate in mind for 2016, it would have to be Rubio.

Perhaps Rubio's dumbness explains the fact that having Rush Limbaugh patiently walk him through all the ways the immigration bill is terrible made no impression on him. He has memorized his talking points hand and is incapable of processing new information.

I don't actually believe that, though. I think he's been bought and paid for.

I checked LinkedIn but only found one of them (Greg, who has a somewhat unusual last name, and appears to be unemployed now, having left his job in 2010). 29. Schumer has a career won-loss record in general elections of 15-0. Add in primaries, and he's 30-0 lifetime.

His only real "tough" election and politically stirring win among those 30 was the 1998 Senate general election in which he toppled RINO Al D'Amato. Other than that, all his wins have been layups and gimmes.

Meanwhile, Michele Bachmann, who has a good and getting better immigration record, won Congressional elections four times, 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2012, and only one of those years (2010) was in a a really red team favorable political climate.

    Answer me this.

Do you suppose that what separates, say, a pedestrian 1500 SAT (excuse the snark and bear with me here) and a perfect 1600 is a handful of wrong answers?

Do you suppose there may be an element of luck in perhaps making "wild stabs" at some answers? That the few on the very tail of the test distribution may have tail-of-the-distribution IQ levels or maybe they have tail-of-the-distribution lottery-winner luck in not missing the small number of questions?

  36. Rubio is going to need a "complete the danged fence" ad to run for President. I'm sure John McCain has already reassured him that that does work. I'm eager to see what Rubio comes up with. It's going to be hard to top the original.

Do you think his good buddy Chuck Schumer has promised to help him with that when the time comes?

  37. I don't understand the point of this. Why are we to believe that the nice, naive Rubio is being misled by cunning, manipulative Schumer? This implies that Rubio has good intentions.

  41. "If he were that smart wouldn't he be bored out his mind as a politician?"

This is idiotic. Everyone craves power. The quote above is like losers saying that that they're poor, lonely and powerless by choice. Steve mentioned Newton recently. When offered political power, he grabbed it. That choice (OK, and age too) made him abandon all scientific research.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I had a friend who worked in Hillary's office back when she was a New York Senator. Apparently, they firmly believed Chuck Schumer to be some sort of experimental political robot from the future. They would try to hustle Hillary to the obvious photo op location before him and they never would be able to do it.

As a purely technical political operator, there may be no one better than Schumer.

That said, I think their career ambitions are more telling. Marco Rubio wants to run for President in 2016. Chuck Schumer wants to be the most powerful man in the Senate for the next three decades. Who's thinking more long term?

One of the other kids to get a perfect SAT score in 1967 graduated from my high school. He was a Presidential Scholar. I find it suspect that Schumer was not. I believe Schumer is a genius with a 150+ IQ. However, I do not believe he had a perfect SAT.

    Just splitting hairs.

  44. Smart or dumb, what does it matter if they both shaft us. Voting for a wax dummy might be preferable.
It's somewhat OT but today's UK-DailyMail has a story about Romney attending John McCain's son's wedding and thus possibly overshadowing the event. The pictures show everyone to be in a happy mood and McCain calls it a 'wonderful day'. The son's bride is black so he's the prospective grandfather of some mulattos should that come about. His daughter Meghan is pictured standing very close to another woman and tweeted "Going to the chapel with my hot bitch date ..." What does that mean? He's also got an adopted daughter from Bangladesh. This is the man who wanted to be president and what passes for a Republican conservative.

  57. Perhaps you would care to explain why

    1. It is salient that Mr. Rubio attended a wretched college for precisely one year given that he earned a baccalaureate degree from the state university and a law degree elsewhere.

    and

    2. You fail to note that upChuck Schumer has had precisely three competitive races in a political career spanning 39 years.

    --Brooklyn has hardly elected a Republican to Congress since the 1920s;

--The only Democratic member of Congress from the five boroughs ejected in a primary in the last forty years had seen his district dismantled, a fate upChuck had managed to avoid.

--Schumer ran for U.S. Senate against Al d'Amato. d'Amato had reached Congress and remained there through fantastic luck. In 1980, the liberal vote had been partitioned by a vigorous third party candidacy; in 1986, the Democratic Party sachems decided to throw the election because d'Amato had hustled so much pork for them; and in 1992 the Democratic candidates had sliced each other to pieces in a primary. When d'Amato's luck ran out, there was upChuck. Democratic candidates win statewide contests in the first instance about 3/4 of the time in New York. In the last 80-odd years, only three incumbent Democrats have been ejected from statewide office by voters.

    3. It does not strike you as salient that upChuck has no history of private sector employment of any kind. He never practiced law and has held public office without interruption since the age of 24.

    ReplyDelete
  58. That less than 10 people/year got a perfect score on the pre-centered SAT does not mean those people are in the 0.00...1% of intelligence. For psychometric purposes I'd guess the SAT is only good for capturing IQ up to about 150 or so, and that plenty of people with IQ's significantly above that did not score a 1600.

Did Larry Summers get a perfect score? He seems smarter than Schumer.

  60. Why does anyone think Schumer is outsmarting Rubio (which wouldn't be that hard). Rubio is an Open Borders guy who pretends otherwise on occasion. When he was speaker of the house in Florida, he blocked all attempts at immigration enforcement.

Yes, he played the immigration realist to get elected to the Senate. Then he reverted to type (Open Borders).

McCain played at being an immigration realist to the Republican nomination in 2008. He want back to Open Borders running against Obama (and losing of course). Now he is part of the Gang of 8.

With few exceptions politicians don't change their views that much. Exceptions exists. Harry Reid was a hard-nosed enforcer until he because dependent on the Hispanic. Watch him on Youtube back in the 1990s. Makes Sailer look like a liberal.

Senator Grassley was once an Open Borders guy. He voted for the 1986 Amnesty and learned his lesson.

Exceptions exist. Not that many though.

I don't think Schumer radiates 'evil' exactly - Saddam Hussein and various psychopath serial killers 'radiate evil'.
Schumer has more a larger than life movie-villainous quality about him, the kind that gets you to like him even while you know he's stabbing you in the back. I think it's to do with empathy - Schumer is well capable of knowing how you feel, and using that against you.

I suspect that, no matter how smart you are, you're not going to get a perfect score on the SAT without serious test-prep. When someone say he got a 1600, that tells me (assuming he's telling the truth):

  68. Chuck Schumer wrote a book a few years ago ("Positively American: Winning Back the Middle-Class Majority One Family at a Time") about how the Dems could win the White House again by promoting policies to help the middle class. I watched Newt Gingrich and him debate this subject on CSPAN several years ago, and Newt gives the book a positive review on Amazon, saying that the GOP ought to coopt some of Chuck's proposals.

An idea for a Sailer article might be to read this book and see how many of its proposals Schumer has actually pursued in the Senate since. The title of the book, and Schumer's advocacy of this immigration bill, which will likely harm the middle class, raise the question of whether Schumer feels that there's no need to help the middle class anymore because he can simply import more poor people who will vote Dem.

My guess is that Schumer knows the downsides to amnesty, but figures that once the Democrats have total power in DC, they make up for the damage and then some with big dollops of legislation: higher minimum wage, expanded EITC, etc. Of course, the size of the economic pie that Dems can redistribute is going to be limited in part by per capital levels of human capital, but maybe Schumer feels that Wall Street can come up with creative ways around that.

I wish I'd taken it again, but I redeemed myself by getting a perfect 2400 on the GRE four years later, which was statistically even more difficult than 1600 on the SAT. At MIT my two smartest friends had 1600s on the SAT (one was a year ahead of me, one a year behind me, both took it at age 15). They were the only two of my friends who always instantly "got" anything I said (and reciprocally, I also understood them effortlessly; I was better at math than them but one was better than me at computers and the other was better at physics).

Since I live within a half hour of Tarkio and know people who grew up there, I can attest that the Brewer and Shipley album "Tarkio Road" reflected accurately reflects the situation prior to the transition of the upper midwest (Tarkio is basically on the border with Iowa) from a center of high scholastic aptitude and beautiful girls (California bands like Brewer and Shipley spent an inordinate amount of time around here) to a decimated husk of its former self. This dramatic transformation was the responsibility of super geniuses like Schumer who just couldn't stand the idea that a core population of the the Nation of Settlers might be occupying human ecology niches to which guys like Schumer obviously were "entitled". So, they brought that culture low. Nowadays the "hayseed" stereotype with which they always saddled the upper midwest via their TV and cinema depictions, is no longer so glaringly mendacious.

As a part of the glorious leveling of the upper midwest we had a lot of formerly robust institutions go belly up and, in the process, fall into the hands of the kind of people who feed on desperation. In the case of Tarkio College, my understanding from the locals was that whoever was responsible for the feeding frenzy decided that it would be a good idea to import a lot of young minority males with criminal records to feed on the "hayseed" females. Rubio may not have had a criminal record but he sure has demonstrated that he is of the right stuff to qualify for that era.

I don't think it's right that people refer to Chuck Schumer as a shyster or a villain. That is not his self-conception. He explained who he is, and I believe him.

His name comes from the word shomer, guardian, watcher. His ancestors were guardians of the ghetto wall in Chortkov. He believes Hashem actually gave him that name. One of his roles, very important in the United States senate, is to be shomer - to be a or the shomer Yisrael. And he will continue to be that with every bone in his body.

It's not his fault he was born to be smarter than other men, and it's nothing wrong with him that he is a vigilant guardian of his race, ethnicity, religion and nation (Israel). On the contrary, the god of his people made him who he is so he can perform his mission.

If the people he's up against are dumb, and also the opposite to him in not being fierce champions of their race, ethnicity, religion and nation, then woe to them and their kind.

No Harry ...that was me. BTW I usually like your comments so I am disappointed at your dis.

But the point was not to brag ( what point is there to bragging anonymously?)... but to point out that it not so much that women are only enthralled with Alpha males ... as much as it is that they they are also subject to "lookism" to a degree that most men are simply clueless about...

That is why I do not think Game and the PUA crowd are completely accurate as they do not seem to account for this very important factor in women's psychology (n.b. I am no expert on PUA and Game because I never needed it but that's how it seems to me based on my limited understanding about these theories or strategies).

Women some how have sucessfully kept this aspect of themselves for the most part under society's radar.

Women may not watch as much porn as we do but they all, and I mean all, spend a whole lot of time fantasizing and thinking about attractive men and how to get our clothes off.

Sorry ... tall, handsome, good looking guys just never go through any of the sexual deprivations that many other males seem to experience... that's just the way it is.

A good visual explanation I have seen of the differnce can be seen here:Tom Brady on SNL skit (Smigel): "Sexual Harassment and You ...► 2:33► 2:33www.youtube.com/watch?v=gBVuAGFcGKY‎

I don't care how much Game a short, ugly, fat, bald guy has ... his life experience of women is going to be much different than a tall, handsome guy's experience of them will be.

    How do I know this?

I have a lot of male friends who are sucessful and have money in the bank ...but can't get a date... and these guys are not even homely they are just average looking.

On the other hand, I am sure if you spoke with some straight professional male models (there are some) or good looking professional atheletes or entertainers ...they would all have stories about how insane women can get.

Stalking ... I can't tell you how many times it has happened to me. Until it happens to you a few times you just don't believe that women are like that. The movie Fatal Attraction was no revelation to me.

There are already tons of studies that show that good looking people, both men and women, get paid more on average than there not so good looking co-workers.

They also get laid a lot more too....a hell of a lot more.

Hypergamy in the USA is very real... and to a large extent it is based on lookism to the same degree or more than Alpha characteristics IMO.

"Hold the phone, folks. I checked the NMS directory. Schumer wasn't a National Merit Scholar. So he wasn't even in the 99.9%tile."

Well, becoming a National Merit Scholar didn't actually work that way back then.

The National Merit Scholar Board required a top score on a test called the NMSQT, similar to the SAT, but more content oriented.

It's certainly possible he didn't score high enough on that test, but got 1600 on the SAT -- though it seems a bit unlikely, considering that he would obviously be very good at such tests in general, and also good enough a student at a presumably good NY high school to be valedictorian (so good at the content part too).

Even after the NMSQT was abandoned in favor of the PSAT, it would be possible to score low enough on the PSAT not to be finalist or semi-finalist, but get a perfect score on the SAT -- possible, but very, very unlikely.

In any case, considering that Schumer was a valedictorian, he almost certainly didn't do particularly great on the NMSQT if he wasn't a National Merit Scholar. So in any case it's worth taking his perfect score on the SAT, real or alleged, with a big grain of salt as an indicator of out-of-this-world smarts. At best, some serious regression to the mean is going down there.

  83. Who cares?

Fact is, Schumer is using his brain/intelligence to force massive demographic change on America -- to facilitate an influx of yet many more millions of Hispanics, perhaps in the end tens of millions, even though it is not so uncommon knowledge that 1) Hispanics are more criminal than Whites, and 2) they are horrendous academic underperformers, to the point where it is reasonable to doubt they can ever make a proportionate contribution to maintaining a stable, prosperous first world America (which an anecdotal look at their countries of origin also suggests).

Why is he doing this? To ensure the future electoral success of the Democratic Party? Is that what we're supposed to believe? I have a hard time believing a guy who channels Alfred E Neuman can be so devious.

    I'm in there:

    Steven Sailer 1976

My vague recollection is that it was pretty hit or miss whether National Merit Semifinalists turned into National Merit Scholars. I did because my dad worked for Lockheed, which was signed up with the National Merit Scholarship corporation to fund a National Merit Scholarship for all employees' kids who were semifinalists. I think I got $500 per year for four years, which would be about a fifth of my Rice tuition back then (but I could be wrong). I can recall going to a little ceremony with four or five other kids whose dads worked for Lockheed Burbank.

And the NMSC gave $1000 National Merit Scholarships to some semifinalists who didn't qualify other ways.

But my impression was that a sizable fraction of semifinalists who qualified as finalists didn't become National Merit Scholars simply because there was nobody to fund their Scholarship. Schumer's dad owned his own pest exterminating company so he couldn't have got one like I got a Lockheed NMS, although there were other ways.

It would be interesting to pursue in regard to Schumer because there's a reasonable likelihood that he didn't actually get a 1600 because so vanishingly few people did. It sounds like the kind of thing that a candidate or press secretary might wing and then you're kind of stuck with this stupid boast for the rest of your life hoping nobody checks up on it -- that kind of thing proved common among politicians in Germany and South Korea.

I agree. Virtually all of these ridiculously high IQ claimed by famous persons turn out to be fictions. Howard Stern asked Quenten Tarantino if he really had an IQ of 160 as reported everywhere, and Tarantino said he didn't know. Stern then asked him some IQ questions and he got them wrong.

Sen. Chuck E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) with his "It's Academic" teammate Janet Schwartz.(Roxanne Roberts - The Washington Post)
Chuck Schumer hosted the 40th-anniversary reunion of his "It's Academic" team last night on Capitol Hill, proving once again that life really is a lot like high school. New York's senior senator was captain of Brooklyn's James Madison H.S. team, which went to the finals in 1967 before losing in NYC's version of the 46-year-old quiz show.

Did he talk a lot back then? "I'd say he answered 60 to 70 percent of the time," said teammate Janet Schwartz, now a psychiatrist in Pennsylvania. Was he right? "Most of the time." Did he love the camera? "He enjoyed the attention then as he does now."

While waiting for the tardy senator, the brainiacs aced an impromptu quiz on 1967 news by host Mac McGarry. Then Schumer arrived, an hour late, and missed one of the 10 questions: "Defecting to the U.S. was Svetlana Alliluyeva, daughter of this Soviet dictator." "Khrushchev?" Schumer answered. Hah! Everyone knows it's Stalin.

I should have known then that he would aspire to high office because he would read the materials as they came off the copy machine to check to see whether I had made any mistakes. He studied while he worked. His SAT score was close to a perfect 1600."

So, Kaplan says Schumer scored close to a perfect 1600. Also, didn't Kaplan start out as kind of a scam where he had high school students who worked for him write down immediately after the test all the questions they could remember.

Hey, Schumer was a high school student who worked for Kaplan!

It's not like you receive a voucher that is good for either $1B cash or for world domination in 30 years with your 99.999 percentile IQ. Or so I have heard.

Remember it is a theorem of arithmetic that for every person in the 99.999 percentile there are 99 person in the 99.9 percentile who are very used to being the smartest person in the room. And going against top .1 percenters outnumbered 99 to 1 is a challenge. But Schumer became the senior senator of the NY. And he did not cash in any sexual favor and adulterer's guilt chips collected from former governors or presidents achieving that.

"[Today's] UK-DailyMail has a story about Romney attending John McCain's son's wedding and thus possibly overshadowing the event."

Romney supposedly overshadowing the event is a lame attempt by a clever British tabloid to cobble together a narrative, gin up controversy (the same formula at work in reality TV) and get web hits off of a picture that was tweeted of him posing with Meagan McCain. As Barack Obama channeling Gertrude Stein would say, "there's no there there."

But since Romney is several orders of magnitude smarter, more competent, more accomplished (even taking the male McCains' admirable and impressive service as US Navy pilots into account) and altogether more decent and more pleasant in nature than anyone in the McCain camp, then yeah, you could say Romney upstaged the McCain wedding.

"The pictures show everyone to be in a happy mood and McCain calls it a 'wonderful day'. The son's bride is black so he's the prospective grandfather of some mulattos should that come about. His daughter Meghan is pictured standing very close to another woman and tweeted "Going to the chapel with my hot bitch date ..." What does that mean?"

Back when Megan McCain was making all kinds of media waves by slamming conservatives on liberal cable TV shows in 2009 and 2010 (and ballooning up by the day), I used to joke that although I'd never met Megan McCain, I knew her all too well. She was the prototypical attention whoring single city girl who goes out to bars every night, drinks like a Russian sailor, does a little blow in the ladies room and ends up dancing on the bar or on a table (garnering her a roomful of longing gazes from of scores of sex starved young male bar patrons) before going home with different a "lucky" guy just a little bit too often.

And then I'd joke (only to trusted, like-minded friends, of course) that if she got any fatter, the male attention would drop off so dramatically that she'd find herself relegated to dating black guys, or worse -- having to go lesbian.

So it looks like she's chosen the latter (even though she appears to have lost a lot of weight), and it's the son (who looks exactly like his father) who's gone down black street.

So I know how our host, Steve Sailer, must feel all the time: coming up with the jokes is too easy. They write themselves.

Bonus: how many of the bride's family members (the people who are watching McCain toast the bride and groom in that picture) HATE HATE HATEd McCain, thought that he was more or less a Nazi-loving KKKlansman, and who knows, maybe even wanted to physically harm him, back when he ran his supposedly shameful, racist campaign against Barack Obama in 2008?

"The son's bride is black so he's the prospective grandfather of some mulattos should that come about. His daughter Meghan is pictured standing very close to another woman and tweeted "Going to the chapel with my hot bitch date ..."

    Harry Baldwin wrote:

"That does my heart good. Those kids REALLY hate John McCain. Probably even more than I do."

LOL. And yeah, apparently they do.

But not more that John "Bonehead" Boehner's daughters HATE HATE HATE him.

BTW, Germans (and people of German descent) are stereotypically smart and competent. And that stereotype has endured, even after depictions of Germans in Hollywood films and popular culture have been ... uh ... less than charitable after everything that went down with Hitler and the Nazis.

So what accounts for Boehner? Is it a southern German vs. northern German thing (I think German Americans from Cincinnati and southern Ohio are usually descended from Bavarians and other southern Germans).

And how perfect is it that with all the smart, competent Germans out there, the Republicans would hitch their wagons to such a sad sack schlemeil as Boner-Boehner!

  106. And even if he had been tested at 160 in his teens, there's been an awful lot of THC and cannabinoids since.

Didn't he drop out of high school to work at a video store?

  107. Did he love the camera? "He enjoyed the attention then as he does now."

This is something that struck me too. Someone that smart surely knows how conniving and devious he looks to a lot of people, and yet he does very little to hide it, even revelling in it. He's got the brains to be the puppet master pulling the strings behind the scenes, and yet he's got this narcissism that compels him to take center stage.

  108. Is IQ vastly over-rated for hyper success?

Look at John Arnold - an energy and commodities trader who is worth $4 billion at age 38. He didn't even go to an Ivy League school. Kyle Bass is another example.

Most brilliant people didn't attend Ivy League schools.

  110. Rubio is pretty dumb, he stated if we don't do it there will be 10 to 11 million more. Granted, the current system is not great either but gradually getting some e-verify in states and the defeat of the bill will allow this more. Also, not any Latin who has a bartender father becomes a politican. Personally, why republicans bother with Rubio I don't understand.

  111. Why is this portrayed as unique to Texas? The majority of NYC contractors follow the same practices - we just don't get the benefit of less expensive housing. Iron workers, electricians and plumbers are about the only trades left in NYC where you can still find any American workers.1099's are issued to construction employees here all the time. These contractors don't cover the illegal workers under their workers comp policy. If an illegal is injured on a job site he is dumped at the ER.

  112. Why is it portrayed as unusual for an illegal to complain? In NYC I have seen numerous protests and videos/photos of similar events in California and DC. They proudly march down the street declaring their illegal status. Illegals know they have nothing to fear in sanctuary cities like NY that have openly declared their refusal to deport anyone.

The illegals actually gather in tents in designated areas of Brooklyn now in attempts at organizing and demanding higher wages/benefits. Of course if the employer is willing to pay more he could find a legal resident to employee.

My area was heavily hit by Hurricane Sandy. I was approached by at least three separate organizations looking for Spanish speaking illegal immigrants only to help. No organizations came around looking to help only English speakers or any other language for that matter. FEMA money is not supposed to go to illegals - what a joke. If you come here illegally and work here illegally does anyone really believe you would be afraid to check the box saying you are legal - PLEASE.
