Over at the Open Borders logo contest on Facebook, the organizers have had to close their borders because all the cleverest logos were being submitted by satirists. It's almost as if human beings are happier when their communities are allowed to regulate who is allowed in ...
Here's a recent entry that was, apparently, sincere enough to avoid being deported.
Bryan Caplan
I think it would be really cool if someone could incorporate the familiar hue and texture of a green traffic light into the design. It's the international symbol of "You're free to go," after all.
Alexandria Fraga
Gave the traffic light suggestion a shot.
Or, then again, this may be yet another reductio ad absurdum -- Let's use Open Borders to spread Mexico City-style driving to the whole world! -- that the Open Borders boys are too naive to notice.
Another subversive Open Borders logo that hasn't yet been rounded up by La Migra and kicked out of the contest page due to the sponsors' terminal unworldliness is:
Trust me, you do not want to look up the photographic original for this adaptation of a disgusting meme.
Previous (intentionally or unintentionally) ironic Open Borders logos are archived here.
Has Caplan ever run a business of any size? I'd thought the stock scene where they bring in the yuppie corporate consultants obsessed with logos and stationery was considered universally risible decades ago. The "Globochem" bit
ReplyDeleteMexico City style driving is bad mainly because of the congestion and a curious lack of protocol at 4-way stops.
ReplyDeleteThe really bad Mexican drivers are on a road near you in America.
Up there, in Georgia, I got Mexi-T-boned twice in 2 years. No English, no drivers license, and no auto insurance - of course. One of these wrecks snapped my sternum (chest bone) and totaled my car. Just another day in the billionaire's day labor market. (Does Bryan Caplan even know how to drive a car?)
Max the link is broken. I think this one's working for the moment
ReplyDeleteSo, I take it that original inspiration for the pic at the bottom ties back to the title of the piece. Nice.
ReplyDeleteI think you'll find this situation (liberal stupidity getting flooded with nonbelievers) is the norm on the web. Most MSNBC or CNN articles I've seen that were just blatant liberal spins have the comments flooded by People who Notice Things.
"Good and hard" comes from a famous H.L. Mencken quote I adapted recently.
ReplyDeleteSteve, if you want to archive them before they're pulled down, you can just download them, then post them again up at imgur.com (or google for 'image hosting' - there are a lot of that kind of site for some reason).
ReplyDeletethe goatse reference was a bit sly and off colour even for you, steve. but still hilarious.
ReplyDeleteDoesn't it represent Superman pulling open his shirt rather than the disgusting image Steve associated with it?
ReplyDeleteI was always partial to the photoshopped one that had the guy sticking his head in his own ass.
ReplyDeleteNot sure what you could do with it, but it seems to fit.
Doesn't it represent Superman pulling open his shirt rather than the disgusting image Steve associated with it?
ReplyDeleteThat's what I thought too, since the thumb side of the hands appear to be pointing up, as they would when someone pulls apart their own shirt. If it were like the disgusting image, I would imagine the thumb side of the hands would be pointing downwards.
At any rate, it's ambiguous enough that it could go either way.
LMAO at the goatse "open borders"...if the originators thought it was Superman, maybe they need to get out more :-/
ReplyDelete"Doesn't it represent Superman pulling open his shirt rather than the disgusting image Steve associated with it?" - regardless, I'd say that one image has forever tainted this type of image.
ReplyDeleteAt the risk of getting all anthropological, I'd say the wry inspiration for the graphic at the bottom is the pagan goddess known as--
ReplyDeleteSheela na gig.
Classic!

ReplyDeleteThats the way its looking. You can almost gauge the level of moderation at a given site by the political slant of the comments. The heavier the moderation the more left leaning the comments. Lightly/unmoderated sites trend right.
i.e. left lib commenters thrive only in a protected hothouse environment where they dont have to contend with dissent.
On the Jason Richwine thread there are some classic butt-hurt quotes. God, I wish I had copied some of them! One commenter claimed to be in tears because Politico had put the article up. What can do with such literal cry-babies?
Needless to say they are getting soundly thrashed in the comments.

Tsunamism.
I thought the bottom logo represented a black man in jail, twisting the metal bars trying to escape. (Of course, this is in the future, where the jails are all located in the Moon.)

ReplyDelete“My sole objective was the emancipation of the country and the prosperity its people would enjoy under a just, truly representative government. Such a government would give the people their proper rights without distinction between civilians and foreigners, so that all the inhabitants of Egypt would be as one, regardless of differences of religions and beliefs, since all men belonged to the same common humanity.” Those shining words were composed in 1882 by an Egyptian colonel who directed a constitutional revolution against the British occupiers and the Egyptian monarch.
---------
"shining words", says Weaseltier who wants no such rule to apply to Israel.
"The really bad Mexican drivers are on a road near you in America." - The whole thing about mexicans needing drivers licenses was quite instructive, many states allow mexican drivers licenses, so any illegal without one quite clearly failed Mexico's driving tests.

ReplyDeleteYou guys have been cracking me up with this and this latest development is some great irony. My ideas would be:
ReplyDelete1. Eye of Sauron
2. Whatever Genghis Knan's symbol was (wasn't it a standard with all of the tribal standards that he had conquered
Etc
Do they understand that their desire for "open borders" is nothing short of a desire to conquer the world? In their utuopianism damaged brains they of course believe that the open borders world will share their values. This is nothing but a backdoor, gamma, child-like fantasy of conquering the world and imposing your will on it.
