L.A. mayor Garcetti bemoans white males studying too hard

The mayor is sad.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti bemoaned the lack of diversity in new Fire Department recruits after celebrating a reported rise in local tourism at an event at the California Science Center.

The first new Los Angeles Fire Department recruit class in five years is nearly all male and mostly white despite repeated promises by the agency to diversify its ranks, according to figures released Monday evening by Mayor Eric Garcetti's office. 
The class of 70 firefighters, which is scheduled to begin training Monday, has just one woman and is 60% white. Twenty-three percent of the recruits are Latino, 11% are Asian American and 6% are African American, according to the figures.
Earlier Monday, Garcetti said that he had not seen the complete breakdown for the class but was not satisfied with the racial and ethnic balance based on preliminary information he received from the department. 
His office obtained complete figures and released them Monday evening after requests from The Times.  
"Mayor Garcetti thinks these numbers are unacceptable and wants the Fire Department to reflect the city it serves,” spokesman Yusef Robb said Monday evening. Los Angeles is 29% white, 49% Latino, 11% Asian and 10% black, according to the Census Bureau. 
Robb said the mayor's office is committed to working with the department  to improve recruiting and ensure future classes include more women and minorities. 
Robb noted that recruiting for the class starting next week took place before Garcetti took office. Another class of trainees could begin later this year.
Fire Department spokesmen could not be reached Monday evening for comment. 
For years, the LAFD has struggled with racial discrimination and sexual harassment, allegations that have cost taxpayers nearly $20 million since 2005, city records show. 
In November, a Superior Court jury awarded $1.1 million to a black firefighter who said he had endured three decades of discrimination. The verdict followed payouts totaling $1.5 million in other bias cases for the budget year that ended in June.

Suing the fire department on some sort of discrimination grounds, as in the famous case of veteran black fireman Tennie "Big Dog" Pierce, who was given $1.5 million by taxpayers for a firehouse prank involving dog food appearing surreptitiously in his spaghetti, is known as AARP: African-American Retirement Planning.
The department, which has 3,200 sworn personnel, has diversified its ranks over the last two decades, city officials say, noting that the last four fire chiefs have been African American. 
But the agency is still 50% white, 31% Latino, 12% black and 7% Asian.

Those darn white fire nuts keep studying how to put out fires.
And despite past scandals involving firefighter attitudes toward female recruits, the ratio of women in the uniformed ranks remains at just under 3% — the same as in 1995.

So the huge city of Los Angeles is hiring firemen at the rate of 14 per year -- in other words, as the number of fires decline, it just doesn't need new firemen. So, this ought to be a non-issue.

Still, we get these ritual denunciations by white male authority figures of working class white males for the sin of burning the midnight oil studying how to save people from fires.

That's what important white people do these days: denounce white men. It's a very weird kabuki rite, but nobody seems to notice there's anything odd about it anymore.

  9. Shouldn't we just go ahead and have quotas? That's what we want, or at least what the representatives we keep electing want. We jump through all these hoops to try to avoid having quotas, and then "disparate impact" punishes us when we don't meet the quota anyway.

    We should just go ahead and say that all public jobs must have +/- X% of the breakdown of the local population in each race and sex, and be done with it. Then if a fire department has to hire some completely unqualified people to meet the quota, it can pay those people to sit around the firehouse, and tell the taxpayers, "Hey, sorry your taxes went up, but it would be a worse tragedy if our diversity were to suffer."

  11. Is it me or does the lefty narrative on culture require believing two contradictory things at the same time?

    1. Different cultures are meaningfully different. This is why diversity is so valuable and enriching. People from different cultures bring different wonderful things to the table and therefore we should try and include them all. Similarly, Western culture is uniquely nasty and oppressive, as opposed to, say, Malian culture. Therefore it's important we teach our kids that Western culture is extra bad.

    2. Different cultures are the same. Therefore, if different groups experience different outcomes, or are represented at different levels in various professions, this must be due to some kind if external oppressive force, since in no way would different cultures produce different outcomes.

    These can't both be true at the same time.

    Amazing that we whites allow ourselves to be spoken to and treated like this. Not a protest, and not a peep beyond a few Internet barbs. "Harvard President Faust thinks the high number of incoming jewish freshmen is unacceptable and wants the institution to reflect the country it serves. The ADL had no comment."

    And for a little extrapolation:

    2030: City 15% white, FD 30%: unacceptable.

    2050: City 5% white, FD 10%: unacceptable.

    2070: City 0% white, FD 100% drunk: ideal.

    The desired number of whites in any place or position where they are the majority is: LESS. This in stark contrast to when they are in the minority: MUCH LESS. And the absolute perfect number of whites: zero.

    I doubt my dotage will persist for the duration needed to ever see narcoleptic whites wake to this genocidal flimflam. But if they ever do... We're going to need a bigger lamppost.

  15. I've been calling myself mixed-race on every survey and application I've come across since I can remember. At first I used to justify it with the fact that my dad was born in west-Asia (even though his parents were just passing through), and I've got kinda olivy skin and really dark eyebrows...but now I don't even think about that. I just treat it as gaming the system.

    Anyway, for firemen, where the person-on-person interaction is less common and most of the work involves checking out the causes of smoke-filled kitchens or spraying hoses on fires, a meritocratic system that takes no account of race does seem better.

    But for cops, much of whose work involves talking to people and being otherwise in close interpersonal proximity to them, I can see the logic of wanting to match various demographic areas with cops who fit the local demographic. As long as the cops are doing their jobs and not being corrupt, I say let black cops go police black areas, Hispanic cops police Hispanic areas, etc. Also harder (though admittedly not impossible) to claim racism when there's an incident.

    It was ever thus. At SF State many years ago, grad students often worked at the fire department while they pursued their advanced degree. Most of the firehouses in the avenues virtually never had a fire, giving the firemen plenty of time to study. I considered such a career path myself but my eyes were not good enough.

    Young black men have myopia rates only about half that of whites. Asian eyes are even worse. I would guess that nearsightedness disqualifies more firemen applicants than any other single defect. And of course myopia correlates with IQ.

  30. Denuciations of White guys is directly proportional to the lack of sexiness of White guys to White women. Which in turn is a function of men and women among Whites being roughly equal in status.

    Yes, this is driven by gender equality. You don't see this among Black women, bashing Black guys. Because Black guys thug it up and thus retain sexiness. Asian women remain lower in status than Asian men, thus Asian men remain sexy.

    I have been toying with that very thought. As Steve likes to demonstrate with his pictures of aggrieved "conquistador-americans", the only thing that matters is your last name. Whether you are of pure European extraction and actually something of an aristocrat means nothing to admissions departments or hiring managers. All they see is your last name. Why not become Garcia or Hernandez?

    My daughters are now young adults. If I were to have children now, especially if I were to have sons, I would be thinking long and hard about the names that I gave them.

Memorizing everything there is to know about being a fighterfighter is in no way gaming the system of picking the best firefighters. General aptitude tests on the other hand serve a very different purpose. But even if it weren't a specious argument, I'll simply note once again, that it is almost as if we don't want to give our country away.

  41. In 1984 I was 20 years old and took the firefighter civil service exam in my Boston suburb as a back-up plan to my B.S. degree in Computer Science. I scored very well on the exam and one day the city Mayor called me into his office and asked if I really wanted the $8 per hour job. I declined. Thirty years later, and all the guys that took that job at that time have been retired for five years and are taking home $60K per year pensions. Recessions, layoffs, and a couple of missed opportunities and I still work full-time for not much more than that.

    Jesus Christ, Mary and Joseph, Pat, that is the longest f*ing web address I've seen in a while.

    Anyway, the whole fireman thing makes me wonder if there is an altruistic gene that draws Irish guys to fires. Both my great grandfather and great uncle, on my mother's side, were NYFD firemen who died in the line of duty. Grandpa was turned down as he was about 5'8 and 120 soaking wet. (A different era for sure, and I am certain he coulda banged out 20 or so pull ups, no problem), but I think, frankly, the powers that be figured that, maybe, just maybe, our family had given enough.

    Anyways, WWII rolls around and the young folks are off fighting the Hun, so grandad gets in as an auxiliary. And, Jesus, he must have loved fires, because I remember a map of all the fires in NYC he fought amongst his stuff when he died. (Bottom line: shit caught on fire a lot more way back when). We also found a ton of fire science books and really technical correspondence with authors of said books concerning hoses, water pressure, engines, and what not; and this was a guy who just had a high school degree. He really studied the crap out of that stuff. Bottom line, his understanding of how physics worked, at least with regards to how stuff burns and how to put it out, was superior to an average affirmative action graduate of a tier 2 college.

    Strangely enough, he was a bit of an Anglophile and maintained we had English blood. It was, therefore, somewhat of a surprise junior year abroad in Ireland when a few of the retail establishments in walking distance of my flat had his surname hanging outside the the shop window.

    Anyway - all these years later, guys like him are still lining up to do the same thing and, apparently, it's a *bad* thing.

    1. Western culture is evil and oppressive.
    2. Non-westerners seek to move, by hook or crook, to societies/economies created by Western culture.
    3. Once they are there, see 1.

    If aliens knew history, they would know that rebellions comes from elites. The American Revolution was not a mass uprising. It was led by elites. French Revolution was not a mass rebellion. It was led by bourgeoisie and some aristocratic elites.
    Russian Revolution was not a mass revolt. It was led by an elite of intellectuals from privileged backgrounds and lots of education.
    The Southern Rebellion was led by the Southern elites.

    So, for there to be a white uprising, there needs to be quality whites leading the charge. And these people need to be willing to give up everything. To lead such a thing, you have to be willing to risk losing all. Most quality whites don't have that kind of courage and commitment.

    Also, even though things don't look good for whites, many whites are prosperous under the current system, and whites are still out-earning all other groups.
    As for the hillbillies, their main mode is 'leave us alone'. As for working class whites, they'd rather drink beer, watch TV, and play videogames. Even being poor in America is pretty good. Why mess it all up with massive social rebellion that will displace so many lives? Even the idea of cutting government spending was opposed by the great majority of Americans. Tea Party is not popular.

    For a true revolution to happen, there has to be really really bad times, whereupon people feel there's nothing to lose. France was a mess prior to revolution. Russia was a mess due to WWI. German middle class was wiped out in the depression, and that's why Nazis and German commies were big players in late 20s and early 30s.

    Even so, even the worst of times need quality leaders to lead a movement. Hitler and Goebbels were moral scum but they were men of talent and commitment.

    Chinese communists had some spectacularly talented men: Mao(in political maneuvering and leadership), Zhou, Liu, Deng, etc.
    Chiang often griped that Mao had the real men of talent and commitment under his wing.

    To be sure, there can be a massive revolution even in good times. Take the 60s, the boom yrs where things were getting better. But good times raised expectations, and blacks and youths got all rowdy, and Jews got very aggressive, and a real revolution did happen. The yippies and hippies lost, but a seismic change did happen in culture, economics, ideas, power, etc. Entire attitudes about race, sex, morality, and etc were fundamentally changed. And homos gained so much in the last 30 yrs though these were mostly calm than crisis yrs.

    To effect change during times of peace and prosperity, you must have men of talent who can take over finance, academia, media, and culture. Thus, while wars and mass killings don't break out, the hearts and minds of the people are conquered by new dogma, new truisms, new agendas. So, Americans now think homo-buggery is as American as apple pie.

    Do white cons have a lot of men of quality in arts, media, academia, and etc? No. If they did, they would be owning the peace. But Jews own it through media, homos own it through culture, and Negroes own it through sports and music.

    I believe that diversity as our greatest strength. I am disappointed that our Fire Department is not more diverse, but to show my commitment to the end of white privilege, I can take an even bigger step for equality as the head of LA government itself. As of the end of the day today, I am stepping down from my post so that a man (or woman) of color may fill my position.

Then if a fire department has to hire some completely unqualified people to meet the quota, it can pay those people to sit around the firehouse, and tell the taxpayers, "Hey, sorry your taxes went up, but it would be a worse tragedy if our diversity were to suffer.""

    That's not bad, but we could refine it even more. Why make all those poor black and hispanic taxpayers suffer from paying for the salaries of racist white firefighters at all, or make them wait with dreaded anticipation while their homes burn because the lazy, incompetent white firefighters who all got their jobs from white privilege want to sit around listening to Smothers Brothers albums and thinking about world domination and homo hating. Or whatever.

    Why not make the white firefighters work at stations near white neighborhoods and put out the fires there, black firefighters at black neighborhoods, and hispanic firefighers work there? There could even be an Asian bucket brigade exclusively for Koreatown. Each neighborhood could provide for and maintain its own firefighters based on whatever criteria it wanted, and you could eliminate all racism from the process, and Compton could finally get the firefighters it deserves based on merit instead of evil white racism.

Suing the fire department on some sort of discrimination grounds, as in the famous case of veteran black fireman Tennie "Big Dog" Pierce, who was given $1.5 million by taxpayers for a firehouse prank involving dog food appearing surreptitiously in his spaghetti, is known as AARP: African-American Retirement Planning.

    If blacks were trustworthy, everybody could bank off of this; "hey Bob, do me a favor and put some dog food in mah spaghetti? I'll give you a cut on the back end."
