Russians win Olympic fashion parade by rejecting unisex

The Russians won the Opening Ceremony parade of nations fashion contest by simply rejecting the unisex orthodoxy for national uniforms. Just about every other country dressed both its male and female athletes identically, which can work at the Summer Games because that athletes aren't wearing all that much in the way of clothes. But, at the Winter Games, everybody has to march into the stadium in heavily insulated winter wear, so females curves get buried.

This may appeal to some athletes on the women's ice hockey team, but not to most women. My experience with skiing in California over the years is that snow bunnies generally wear the most skin tight clothes possible without general frostbite setting in.

(In general, the Winter Olympics are noticeably less lesbian than the Summer Olympics, due to a number of factors: if the premiere sport, figure skating, didn't exist, it would be invented by the Disney Corp. to sell more merchandise to Daddy's Little Princesses; the smaller number of team sports; and the general association of winter sports not with school but with expensive vacations.)

If on top of the insulation, you insist upon dressing the male and female winter athletes in the same exact clothes, it makes for a thoroughly unsexy look. Thus, the American squad all wore patriotic ugly Christmas sweaters that kind of looked like a Fourth of July family reunion where all your aunts and uncles decided it would be the cutest thing to make everybody wear the same bulky red-white-and-blue sweaters to attend a very chilly fireworks show in Juneau, Alaska, or something.

A few Eastern European countries dissented from unisex dogma. The Czechs at least gave the boys and girls different colored hats. The Poles were subtly but elegantly varied with the men in gray and white, the women in white.

The Russians went all the way and dressed the men in some sort of dark pea coat-like militaristic thing to make their men look strong in the upper body, while their women wore long fake fur coats nipped in at the waist and flaring over the hips to make them look sexy. The Russian's execution of this basic concept -- make our men look manly, our women look womanly -- may have been less than ideal, but in the Culture War going on in Sochi, getting the basic concept right is a win for the Russkies.

Still have a Super Bowl hangover so haven't tuned in to the games, but what you write is interesting.

You don't think that America couldn't have done that for the Winter Games?

    No?

    Seriously?

Like anyone would put up a squawk?

I mean, don't the PC Powers that be have bigger things to care about, such as making sure that Russia continues to get chastised for daring to not let a particular minority dictate to them how to run their games? I mean, since they are the host country and all.

Well, good for Russians for setting some fashion standards. Who would've thought it?

Perhaps its all that ballet and figure skating that Russia has excelled at in the past that makes their nation get the femininity thing more or less correct.

We could learn from this example.

Less than ideal is putting it mildly. The idea of these Russian uniforms is a hell of a lot better than the reality. So, an "A" for effort, I suppose.

As for the US uniform, what in God's name was Ralph Lauren thinking? His design for the London games might have been boring, but at least it was tasteful. This Winter outfit looks like something a team of drunken grandmas might have cobbled together.

  3. Regarding the opening ceremonies, I found it laughable at what the NBC commentators said during the show. At one point they were telling us how geographically large Russia was, and that was one of the reasons why Putin wanted a strong, central government.

Of course they were saying many things to try to make Russia look bad. But that one got to me because we all know that NBC, and the rest of SWPL elite, also want a strong, central government. Somehow I doubt it is because America is so geographically large.

  5. Russian men and women. The female outfit is a variation on the theme of Snegurochka (Snow Maiden), the granddaughter of Ded Moroz (Grandfather Frost), the Russian version of Santa Claus. The men's hats are traditional Russian ushanka hats, though unusually colored.

  6. There's some bizarre stuff going on there. The Irish are marching off to war, the French look like they have toilet paper stuffed in business suits, the Canadians are going for that classy RCMP look, Japan is wearing laboratory coats, Germany is *trying* to look bad, and the USA has already been commented upon enough, but you just *know* they smell like moth balls.

I actually think the winners are those like Argentina who seemed to forget to design special uniforms, and had to run to Russia's equivalent of K-Mart at the last minute for some polyester specials.

Funny how the last 2 Winter games now have been based in the warmest cities of the host countries (Sochi and Vancouver). Maybe the descending hordes of media and tourists really don't like freezing their a** off for a few thousand dollars?

But Sweden did the same thing and equally well (but the color blue was darker so it was not as noticeable). The women had very chic long blue coats on, while the men had long navy car coats.

Hannah Kearney just gave the most un-PC sportsman/woman post-event interview since, well,Richard Sherman.

She is a 27 year perennial American winner in moguls, who just won the Bronze. The gold and silver went to a pair of (hot, younger)Canadian sisters.

Kearney won the Gold in Vancouver, and was favored this year. In her interview, she cried throughout, correctly said that her best years were behind her, that a Bronze was a loss, and that the Canadians didn't beat her.

None of this "I am happy to be part of the Olympics; I am proud to receive the Bronze; I am so happy for the gold and silver girls." Nope. Instead, she basically said "I am a loser; my life is over; I am the best - they just got lucky".

And the podium shots (flower ceremony immediately after the event): wow!

  44. Buchanan supported a strong US policy, such as NATO membership, during the Cold War because communism was an existential threat to the US. But Buchanan, other paleos, and even President Eisenhower always believed NATO was a temporary alliance that should be ended as the Europeans got back onto their feet. Twenty years after the fall of the USSR, with the EU having a greater population and GDP, it is more than past due to end NATO. I don't fault Buchanan for not wanting to continue supporting NATO.

The bogey man today, islamists, are not the threat that the USSR was. To contain them doesn't take a NATO alliance, or endless wars in third world hellholes trying to spread women's rights, gay rights and democracy. Rather we just have to keep them out of our countries.

I don't see any contradiction in Buchanan's views. He seems to be an American firster, and his positions have changed as the threat to the US has changed from a worldwide communist takeover to an immigration driven population takeover.

Buchanan I believe, was against Milosevic in 1991 in the midst of the overthrow of the Eastern European communist states. Milosevic was seen as a communist leader trying to keep together a multicultural collection of nations in the face of a strong nationalistic tide to break apart Yugoslavia. He was against the US supporting Milosevic in this effort.

Later when it came to Kosovo, that was different. Kosovo was not a separate nation. It was an historic piece of Serbia being ripped away and the US had no business in supporting this. Buchanan never argued that we should have backed Serbia. Rather he argued we should have not intervened against Serbia.

But when it comes to the trend of the second world women (those from Eastern Europe, Asia and Latin America)putting a lot more effort into their appearance, trying to make themselves look ultra feminine with excessive make up, stilettos and skin tight brand name clothing (if they can afford it), I think you misunderstand reasons for it.
As far as I remember from adolescence, the good looking, popular kids weren't the ones who resented wearing silly gym uniforms and dorky sweaters their grandma knitted. It was the awkward looking kids who got bummed out by the prospect of a stupid knit vest or drabby choir uniform. It's insecurity that drives the Second World to obsess over image. Gimme a break. So they built a huge golden church in the middle of Moscow. And the president gets blessed by the Patriarch there, and also uses the premises to hide his whores, literally.

The masses are as ideologically christian as they used to be ideologically communist. That is, not at all. They used to like alcohol and loud dancing. Now they like alcohol and rap music. Oh, and when they get drunk and bash each other's faces in, they do it in the name of the church instead of in the name of the communist party. And that small layer of well behaved, polite, socially conservative folks acted exactly the same during communism. They still avoid disorderly conduct and adultary, and they still get abortions.

This is a ludicrous prediction to make, and yes I have heard of this before, China is not looking for lebensraum and unlike America it has capable leaders that know making war with Russia is much more expensive than simply trading with them. Then there is also the matter that a full scale invasion will likely involve nuclear weapons being used by Russia.

But lets hypothetically assume China invades Siberia, first lets examine the two main drivers of US foreign policy, they are': defend Israel and spread the PC ideology to every corner of the planet. Since China running Siberia does not harm Israel, and Russia is everything that the politically correct hate, America will either remain neutral or secretly push that Russia concede Siberia in the name of world peace.

  71. Hannah Kearney just gave the most un-PC sportsman/woman post-event interview since, well,Richard Sherman.
    [...]
In her interview, she cried throughout[...]

None of this "I am happy to be part of the Olympics; I am proud to receive the Bronze; I am so happy for the gold and silver girls." Nope. Instead, she basically said "I am a loser; my life is over; I am the best - they just got lucky".

It wasn't "un-PC" or PC. It was NC - No Class.

Are you suggesting that there's something admirable about being infantilized and ill-bred?

  72. Tangential to the discussion is the Anglo-sphere press's sniping and carping about the accommodations at Sochi. One might expect it from spoiled, teenaged girls, but not from globe-trotting male journalists.

Maybe they've figured a way of making high-T women look very high-E?"

That was more East Germany that was willing to use their sprinters and swimmers as lab rats.

As for Hannah Kearney, she is highly competitive and was very disappointed. The interview was honest, not Ivy League entitled. If she had been celebrating a gold like the hot Canadian chick was, the press would have hammered her for that. Damned if you do...

  77. Inconvenient truth for Jews.

Under communism, many Jews took part in the massive destruction of Russian culture and the mass killing of Slavs. Millions of Slavs were killed whereas pogroms against Jews had claimed only 1000s of lives. Also, 50,000 Russian churches were demolished under communism. But Jews would only like for us to remember how the USSR became 'antisemitic'.

    http://www.nybooks.com/articles/archives/2014/feb/20/what-beautiful-mess/?insrc=toc

"A knowledgeable Russian lazing around in the grass, sniffing clover and munching on boysenberries, expects that at any minute the forces of history will drop by and discreetly kick him in the ass. A knowledgeable Jew in a similar position expects history to spare any pretense and kick him directly in the face. A Russian Jew (knowledgeable or not), however, expects both history and a Russian to kick him in the ass, the face, and every other place where a kick can be reasonably lodged."

Never mind that Soviet Jews kicked over 10 million Christian Slavs to their early graves.
Jews kick historical memory that doesn't serve their interest into the dirt. No Jewish guilt over anything.

Another inconvenient fact of history is that many more Slavs than Jews were killed by Nazis and that Slavs did the brunt of the fighting, killing, and dying to defeat the Nazis. If not for Slavic heroism, Nazis would have won.

Slavs suffered from both the bolshocaust carried out by Jewish communists and the genocidal war waged by the Nazis.

But Jews want to portray themselves as victims of all: Holocaust by Germans, pogroms and 'antisemitism' by Slavs, and golfocaust by American wasps(rich Jews were not admitted to fancy country clubs in the past).

Just because Putin reined in the Jewish robber baron oligarchs and because Russia bans homosexual parades and homo propaganda in schools, Putin and Russia are smeared as the new Nazi state by Jewish oligarchs who control western media.

  78. Chris Roach:

Russia has so far put on a beautiful Olympics, and the opening ceremony was both dazzling and dignified, an expression of national pride, but more subdued than the heavy-handed Bejing Games.

And yet there are Russia haters everywhere, especially in the West. They are rooting against the success of this Olympics and applying double standards–knocking Russia’s infrastructure for example–in ways they would never apply to African, Asian, or Latin countries. And they hate Russia for the very reasons conservatives should like it: Russia has taken a stand for Christianity and against the fanatical anti-family gay agenda, Russia is one of the sole European nations with some ethno-national pride, and, more generally, Russia is now a normal country not totally destroyed by corrosive political correctness.

Yet Google makes a rainbow their monicker, just so we know where they stand. And even so-called conservatives are trashing Russia for its censorship because of its popular law preventing gay recruitment of children and related propaganda.

    Russia Haters

The modern liberal West is utterly warped and perverted.

No way. Traditional skating, skiing, bobsledding, etc. are the real sports at the Winter Olympics.

Team sports that are professional entertainment spectacles, like ice hockey, soccer, basketball, etc., should not be Olympic sports.

In Tsarist Russia and the Soviet Union, the "multi-culti" consisted of Muslims, Central Asians, Siberians, East Asians, Eskimo types, etc.

  83. "In Tsarist Russia and the Soviet Union, the "multi-culti" consisted of Muslims, Central Asians, Siberians, East Asians, Eskimo types, etc."

One big difference is the relative lack of guilt-mongering. Russians haven't been made to feel that they owe anything to Central Asians, Caucasus natives, etc.

Also, until the 1990s the historical core of Russia was overwhelmingly ethnic Russian. The fall of the Soviet Union produced a similar effect to other decolonizations - the new Central Asian and Transcaucasian states descended into war and mismanagement (yes, even compared to Yeltsin's Russia) and millions of their people, most of whom knew the Russian language, fled to Moscow and other Russian cities.

So the historical core of Russia isn't as homogenous as it used to be. The guilt-mongering is nowhere near Western levels though.

  85. Yep, the Slavs will fix it, cuz they've done such a bang-up job on their own civilization out there.

Cut the Slavs some slack. Have the Slavs ever had a period like the West where they weren't being invaded or ruled by hostiles? The Slavs have had to hold off bad guys from the East, South and maniacs from Europe. While Western Europe was undergoing a renaissance, many Slavs were under the Ottoman boot. Fortunately they did not convert and remained true to their faith, or Western Europe might have come under the Ottomans. The Slavs also endured decades of Marxism, and the fact that today they retain more of traditional European culture than the Western Europeans is a testament to them.

With socialism being increasingly rammed down our throats by an increasingly authoritarian P.C. regime, it's getting difficult to argue that the Cold War was a victory for freedom.

  88. Spot on! The "damn Russkies" (tm), or I suppose Putin, delivered a terrific beat-down on the West in their Opening Ceremony. From the outfitting of their Olympians to the skit about re-population (two kids for every girl!) by married couples, it was a delight to view. And the aesthetic of Russian Culture on display mocked beyond recovery the London Olympic OC. Ballet & Classical music? A salute to & encouragement of parenthood? By *gasp* White folks? No wonder the Western Media focused on a small glitch in the Olympic Rings. Nothing to see or ponder here, people! Move along! No matter the number of medals the Russian athletes earn, the Opening Ceremony was pure psychological Gold Medal.

  89. About Hannah Kearney, the moguls bronze medal list:

She is not Ivy entitled; she is taking freshman courses at Brown at age 27.

Her interview was the most graceless I have seen in any Olympics, though the MSM has not pursue that angle. Even in non-Olympian venues like pro sports or your office, those finishing second or third suck it up in public.

She was a whining, self-pitying sore loser. Her commercial opportunities were scarce to begin with, and now they are none.

Well, I'm not holdind my breath on China become Christian, too much of Christianity today is pretty rootless, the Russians like the old fashion Eastern Orthodox which means the highest life is to forgo material things, live like a hermit and forgo sex. Eastern Orthodoxy biggest christian heros. Simeon the Elder that live on a pillar for 50 years is the hero of Eastern Orthodoxy, a lot of folks here don't think of the lots of forgo the material world of Eastern Orthodoxy which was at its height in Late Antiquity after Constantine brought Christianity within the political sphere.

I doubt there are that many Christians in the US who are as devoted as these Orthodox. Yevgeny Rodionov was only 19 when he refused to take off his cross and convert. The Chechens then beheaded him. The Orthodox are proud of their martyrs, and living where they live, this still happens in modern times.
