Olde tymes at iSteve ...

Judging from today's Google searches, the whole world is suddenly interested in my 2001 UPI article on how the Nabisco ladies' golf tournament in Palm Springs functions as a national Lesbian Spring Break:
Lesbians Turn Out for Ladies Golf Championship

  1. So why are they all so pissy that Golf Digest put Wayne Gretzky's hot, trashy-looking daughter on their cover?

  2. I wonder if it's related to the brouhaha over Wayne Gretzky's daughter posing provocatively on the cover of Golf Digest magazine. See a writeup here at Deadspin.

It would be interesting to know the exact search phrases that are leading people to your old article, Steve.

  4. What? Se-Ri Pak doesn't sell magazines to a male audience?

I'm a golfer, female and straight, and it's been years since I watched more than a few holes of a woman's major even though Paula Creamer's hometown is just a few towns over.

The courses they play are generally uninteresting and the cameras stay on the short game much long, ironic since the women's short games seem that great while their long games are indeed impressive.

The networks seem to position a camera here and there, and that's it. Should drama actually develop somewhere, it's often not captured live.

I recall when Nancy Lopez, the Arnold Palmer of the ladies' game, was on the cover of not just golf magazines, but just about every pop culture magazine of the day. She was a rare personality. I don't t think her popularity with men was based on sensuality but rather on an attractive, even innocent wholesomeness that seems lacking in all of American pop culture today.

If there WERE a Nancy Lopez on the LPGA tour today, would America's rough culture even notice or care?
Perhaps if she were tatted up? Egads.

  5. Betty Crocker gets redrawn about once a decade to be up to date, and sure enough, Betty Crocker started looking more like Nancy Lopez.

  6. The big AM talk radio station in Austin TX was discussing this on Friday - a caller came on and used the term "lesbian spring break."

That search on Google brings up a bunch of porn videos but not iSteve.

The iSteve article showed up for me on page 2 of the Google search results. But perhaps this is because I come to this site frequently. On the other hand, the UPI article is hosted on a different site than the iSteve blog.

  10. Dang. Typing on a tablet is hard work, so much so, I don't bother to edit:

    This should read,

"The courses they [the women on the LPGA] play are generally uninteresting and the cameras stay on the short game much too long, ironic since the women's short games do not seem all that great while their long games are indeed impressive."

Every age group, both genders loved her.

Alas, men's golf is in the doldrums too. All the guys can hit it a ton and most of the swings look alike. Tiger is unhealthy and out of the Masters; we don't know if Phil's back will be okay and his arthritis has been taking its toll.

Nicklaus. Trevino. Palmer. Floyd. Player? What did their swings have in common, esp. compared to the swings of today? Kinda ugly, yet beautiful in the results they produced.

  12. My guess is that there is an optimal number of superstars per sport, probably in the 2 to 4 range. Golf goes through periods when the top six or eight are pretty similar and then it loses the interest of marginal fans. At the other extreme, the NBA could use somebody to seriously challenge LeBron.

Huh? Several of the Koreans are themselves, I do believe, "husky lesbians."

I forget the name of the Korean gal who has won majors. She's quite personable, good sense of humor, talkative, very different in that way from the other Koreans on an American sports circuit.

She's very, very butch. Were she the Nancy Lopez type, the LPGA might have been in the spotlight again after the year she had few years ago.

Steve, they have a sense of humor at the LPGA. In two weeks, the tour comes to Lake Merced Country Club in beautiful Daly City CA, where thanks to AGW the famous cold and fog has disappeared. The tournament is put on by something called the Swinging Skirts Foundation, whose ex. dir. is named Johnson Wang, which seems like a microaggression to me, but what the hey.

It's hard to believe that it was less than three years ago that Dirk Nowitzki was the best basketball player on the planet.

  16. Dan Jenkins has been riffing on the Nabisco as Lesbian Spring Break for years. He devoted a whole novel to the women's tour called The Franchise Babe.

He also wrote about what he calls the Yellow Peril, the proliferation of Koreans on the women's tour. In Korea, girls are allowed to turn pro at 14, 4 years earlier that the LPGA (without a hardship exemption), so they have a 4-year head start dealing with the pressure of pro golf when they get to America.

He also maintains that there are a lot more straight girls on tour now than 20 years ago.
