From KCRW, the NPR flagship of Los Angeles:
How to Make a Bacon Cocktail
This just reminds me of how bad I am at intuiting what will strike other people as cool in the future.
A couple of decades ago, historian Paul Johnson argued that since Anglo-Americans had stopped eating dogs and horses, the next thing would be to stop eating pigs, which are notably more intelligent than, say, chickens or turkeys. Granted, pigs don't have the people-pleasing personalities of dogs, horses, or cats, but they are reasonably smart and share certain personality traits with us (e.g., take a dog to the beach and he runs and runs; take a pig to the beach and he lies down).
This struck me as not unreasonable, and something that I, personally, would do (not eat pork, I mean -- I already don't run on the beach), if only pigs weren't so tasty. So, ever since, I've felt a little bit guilty while eating delicious pork.
I also figured back then that NPR-listening foodies would by now have taken up this cause, with bacon being relegated to a class marker of fast-food customers.
As usual, I was all wrong. Bacon is currently in; not just with fast-food fans, but with NPR foodies as well, who are infusing bacon into all manner of things, some of which sound pretty gross to me.
A lot of successful people got to where they are because they figured out one thing ahead of most other people (e.g., Bacon cocktails are going to be big!) and then used their new eminence to cling to positions even as they aged out of the zone in which they could intuit the next big thing.
In contrast, my proven track record of lacking a sixth sense about what's going to be the Next Big Thing just encourages me to redouble my efforts to understand factually How Things Work right now. I've learned a huge amount about how the world works because I'm like a blind man who has to hone his hearing to make up for his missing fifth sense.
Horse meat is back too (albeit surreptitiously).
ReplyDeleteThe French of course never quite gave up on our equine friends as a food source. And an English friend of mine when I lived in Spain was big on serving horse meat to his dinner-party guests--at least in part to wind them up a bit. It's not bad, actually, as I guess a lot of Europeans have recently learned to their chagrin.
ReplyDeleteWhen did Anglo-Americans ever eat dogs and horses?
ReplyDeleteYou see, morality is mostly not a matter of individual conscience. For most people, it's a matter of what is imposed, foisted, or drummed into them.
ReplyDeleteThough the evils of hogocaust is so obvious, people don't make the connection because it hasn't been hyped as evil by the powers-that-be. Also because famous celebs don't come out against it.
This is why 'gay marriage' stuff is a sham. Jews and gays are immensely powerful and used all their means to impose 'gay values' onto the people, especially the young.
Also, moral bullying by the powers-that-be is powerful and effective. People wanna be liked and wanna go along, and most don't wanna stand their ground if it's gonna cost them 'respect' and 'popularity'. So, most people under pressure just go along and do their best to convince themselves that they changed their minds out of their own volition--because the truth means that they were cowards who just decided to conform under pressure. Though Jews and gays pretend to be anti-bullying, they bully everyone to support Zionism or the gay agenda.. or else face the blacklist.
It's the same reason why people who got so worked up over South Africa seem blind to the human rights violations of Israel. It's why people who think it was outrageous that US didn't do enough to fight Hitler sooner find nothing wrong with US allying with mass murderer Mao. People who complain that US didn't do enough to save Jews later had no problem with US pulling out of SE Asia and letting all those Cambodians die under the Khmer Rouge.
It's why those who scream and howl about blacklisting of communists in the 50s don't find anything wrong with shutting down speech they don't like. People are like that.
The smart and powerful manipulate this aspect of people, but most people are blind to how easily manipulated they are.
I say this.
Since feeling morally superior is such a big thing among liberals, I can easily demonstrate that I'm morally superior to all of them--and most people here as well. For I not only oppose the dogocaust but the hogocaust. Pigs are my brothers and sisters.
And another thing. Notice how people get all worked up over Japan killing whales. I oppose the whaleocaust too, but why so much rage about whales but not about hogs? Hogs and whales are related. Hogs are like small whales with legs and whales are like big hogs without legs. Far more pigs are killed than whales, but there's no Save the Pigs movement.
And whales supposedly taste yummy. But I don't go around eating it just because it's tasty. (The chinese guy at the carryout says that dogs are tasty too, but that is no excuse to eat em.)
I grew up eating pork and love the flavor. But I decided you gotta do the right thing. Besides, if it's okay to eat pigs because of the taste, then who are we to say Asians shouldn't eat dogs in the US? What if Asians say it's just as tasty--and stupid SWPL agree? What if they start yammering about 'culinary equality' just like gays yammer about 'marriage equality'?
What if we hear that banning dog-eating is 'racist' and robs Asians the right of their culinary culture? I means if Jews are allowed to slaughter animals in the kosher way, other cultural excuses can be made to expand the culture of barbarism.
ReplyDeleteI'm morally superior to 99% of liberals. Their idea of morality is marriage for guys who pork eachother in the hynie. They confuse immorality with morality.
My morality is to end the horrible hogocaust. Liberals ought bow down before me and suckle on my toes. Pig eating monsters.
Sailer is kinda okay because he's beginning to feel pangs of guilt.
PS. At the very least, they should improve the conditions of hog farms. The way things are is downright cruel. That such thing can happen in America, the richest nation on earth, makes me wonder about how hogs are treated in other parts of the world. Poor piggy.
If it goes on like this, a mad scientist should genetically create Pigler to take revenge on mankind.

Hogs are truly tragic animals.
ReplyDeleteMost hoofed animals are rather dumb and simple-minded.
But hogs are very intelligent and able... but they attacked and eaten by wolves, hyenas, leopards, lions, tigers, and etc.
Poor piggy.

Wanna drive liberal crazy and feel superior to them?
ReplyDeleteTell them YOU don't eat pigs and call them 'dirty pig eating savages'.
And then explain pig IQ, compare them to dogs and whales, and etc.
It's Official: Humans taste like Pork
ReplyDelete1) read isteve predictions
ReplyDelete2) do the opposite
3) profit!
How to drive liberals crazy is a great thread idea. Of course you can accuse them of being racist for living in an all white SWPL enclave, which they all do. It's too bad we don't have a term live Islamophobia or anti-Semitism for Christians.
ReplyDeleteHa! I know something Sailer doesn't. Lower class food has a lot of fat. Upper class food has *huge* amounts of fat- e.g. the massive amounts of cream in French or northern Italian food. Upper class food is about intense, overwhelming flavors.
ReplyDeleteDon't assume that you are wrong Mr. sailer this could be one last ironic hurrah for bacon before it is relegated to slough of the people who eat at Hardee's. One of bunyan's lesser known sloughs.
ReplyDeleteA co-worker posts something about bacon every few days on his Facebook. God love him, but some of this stuff just sounds nasty.
ReplyDeletePoor piggy.
ReplyDeleteThis breaks my heart:
How about this one:

I feel like I was on the bacon bandwagon before the band got together.
ReplyDeleteOTOH, as the Oscars chatter reached a crescendo today, I wanted to exit my company potluck short one hand grenade.
Over-the-top bacon fetishism is an ancient staple of internet comedy from which only the most dilettantish of internet people (for lack of a better term) are still deriving pleasure. Its presence on terrestrial radio is but a marker of its worn-outness.
ReplyDeleteI don't like bacon; the typical crunchy, greasy texture of it is disgusting. Ham on the other hand... It's like if bacon decided to stop being gross and start being delicious.

ReplyDeleteHow are Vegan-snob parents to enjoy tickling their little ones to laughter if instead of This Little Piggy they have to play This Little Organic Rutabaga?

ReplyDeleteC. Hitchens, Jews, atheism, pork - feast here.
ReplyDeleteIt is a mistake to assume that all of SWPLdom are humorless puritans who espouse veganism. There's a strong counter-streak of sensualism. All you have to do to help bring it out is translate it into French (it isn't pork or bacon; it's Charcuterie) or Italian (coffee = Espresso) or German (beer = Reinheitsgebot).
ReplyDeleteSWPL sensualists campaigned for Real Ale (CAMRA) in the UK and led the beer micro-brewery boom in the USA in the 1980s and 90s (IIRC Portland Oregon has the most breweries per capita in the USA due to microbrews). SWPL sensualists obsess over coffee and tea. They embrace Charcuterie in cooking.
Those who are open to the dark side go on to obsess over steak, whiskey, and cigars. Once they get that far these SWPL types are obviously ripe for conversion to HBD, game, WN, alt-right and the Dark Enlightenment. If they are willing to give up their rationalizations, that is.
I don't think your readers ideas about teasing SWPL with pig's intelligence will have any effect. SWPLdom are past masters at rationalization. Is the pig locally sourced food? Organic? Raised and butchered humanely? That's okay then.
Is the chicken local?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ErRHJlE4PGI
The chicken's name was Colin.
Therefore your theory is invalid.
SWPL rationalization hamster wins again!
This giant candy store has an entire bacon section, including soda (not local, or it would be "pop") and lip balm.
ReplyDeleteDon't mock choirinophagy. In a View From the Right post lauding the noble pig, a reader pointed out that Islam was unable to spread into areas where swine and their meat were embraced, e.g. Europe, China, Indochina, Polynesia. It's a vaccine of sorts.
(By the way, "long pig" is a favored dish among some tribes.)
Actually, it's not the lovable animals we avoid eating, but the carnivorous ones. That's what keeps Rover off our plates-- at least in the West. Guess we just don't fancy twice-eaten meat.
I was not amused by the word verification for my previous comment including my son's name.

ReplyDeleteNo one should be blamed for not anticipating a bacon cocktail.
German (beer = Reinheitsgebot)
ReplyDeleteI can assure you that hier in Deutschland, no one would go into a Kneipe and order a Reinheitsgebot.
But I get the point.
The whole point with the bacon thing was as a reaction against health-nuttery--it's one of the greasiest foods around.
ReplyDeleteThere was even a set of bacon and tofu action figures someone came out with a while ago.
I believe this is an important post about how the things are working right now (pig-un-related):

Your F.r.
And then explain pig IQ, compare them to dogs and whales, and etc.
ReplyDeleteBut IQ is just a porcine construct!
Anyone who's ever lived downwind of a pig farm knows one reason why people can maintain enough emotional distance to keep eating them.
So maybe we could breed stupid happy pigs?
ReplyDeleteIs that ethical?
We have been doing that along, really, except that pigs seem to have some surprising epigenetics.
Bacon will become more popular simply because it's good for you. Someone will soon advertise pork and bacon as good for your heart. That seems to be true.
ReplyDeleteMedical science right now is in the position of being commited to a diet theory that can't possible be correct. Your doctor and pop culture think that the path to better heart health is less fat in your food and on your body. But obviously something is wrong with this theory.
Your doctor can fix most of the problems you have with your body. Medical science works. But the great exception is diet advice. Most doctors will tell you to eat less and especially to eat less fat. Do that and you will lose weight but of course you will gain it all right back. Everyone knows this including your doctor.
But animal breeders have known for centuries that you feed animals carbohydrates to fatten them up. The paradoxical fact is that eating fat makes you thin. It's eating carbs that make you fat.
Th low carb Atkin's Diet is in effect a high bacon diet. Eat bacon to lower your blood lipids.

Though I oppose hunting whales, killing one for food might be more ethical than killing pigs. By killing one whale--taking one life--, you can feed 1000s of people. By killing a pig, you can only feed tens.
ReplyDeleteYou folks must be like the vampires in TWILIGHT. They wanna drink our blood but abstain from it because it aint right. If vampires can be so moral, surely humans are capable of being better.
ReplyDeleteThink of yourself as a hampire. Sure, you wanna eat pig, but it's better to suppress your animal bloodthirst and instead to appreciate pigs for their true worth.
Learn to love Potbella Swine.

ReplyDeleteWhy haven´t films like Babe or Charlotte´s Web not made kids averse to eating pork. Maybe our taste buds beat out our emotions. Dogs are probably not very appetizing, add that with their personalities and eating them became a no-no.
ReplyDeleteDo people with pet pigs not eat pork? I doubt it. I used to have a parrot, but I never stopped eating fowl.
"Fun said...
ReplyDeleteI don't like bacon; the typical crunchy, greasy texture of it is disgusting. Ham on the other hand... It's like if bacon decided to stop being gross and start being delicious."
English bacon is more like ham. Crispy bacon is called "streaky bacon" over there.
Celeb chef & restaurantaur, Gordon Ramsey, put himself, and his wife, through a slaughter-house experience of watching the two pigs, and two sheep they'd raised from babes, dispatched, stunned, knifed, and skinned. Perhaps we should all subject ourselves to this, as our ancestors did, though it would not make a difference in meat-eating. Even the hard boiled Gordon looked shaken, and his poor wife was one of the few people I'd ever seen turn a whiter shade of pale on tv, right before my eyes.
In the aftermath, she looked haunted, as if she'd seen a massacre ... oh, right, she had.
Ramsey, however, vowed to do right by these sacrificed beasts, and make them as tasty a dish as possible.
Mrs. Ransey, trooper that she was, did not dispute this approach. I guess, like an emergency room, you get used to it.

Food epicureanism...
ReplyDeleteI know a guy who is a very smart New York Jewish atheist who racked up a couple of blue-chip Ivy League degrees without breaking a sweat, and had stepped onto the Wall Street track, before having a kind of crisis of meaning and deciding that that world was a bunch of BS, and wanted to do something more worthwhile.
He is smart enough to see that most PC stuff is BS, but culturally, he is 100% ACLU, anti-Rush Limbaugh, anti-Bush, anti-Christendom, anti-marriage, anti-family values, anti-patriotism, individualist, libertarian, etc., in other words, very much a Cultural Marxist and not inherently a fan of the Historical American Nation, as people around these parts say. (As a man of principle, he also abhors Jewish ethnocentrism...)
One of his first and longest-lasting loves is foodie-ism. My point being, if you don't have an object to revere and hold sacred, such as America, Jesus, the Tribe, or whatever, your highest values perhaps tend to be those of Epicurean sensual gratification, such as food. Also, sex (cf. the nihilism of the brilliant Chateau Heartiste blog).
But animal breeders have known for centuries that you feed animals carbohydrates to fatten them up. The paradoxical fact is that eating fat makes you thin. It's eating carbs that make you fat.
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure that pigs fed the same caloric volume of corn oil as corn wouldn't be any thinner.
They might be dead of course, but otherwise they wouldn't be thinner.
Certainly farmers give animals fairly refined carbs to fatten them up, but that's as a substitute for not very starchy vegetable fodder, not fats or protein.
"then who are we to say Asians shouldn't eat dogs in the US?" - But they shouldn't be, they should be eating dogs in Asia.

And Jews have given us both Mendelssohn and Marx.

cream in French or northern Italian food.
ReplyDeleteHey dummy - Italians, northern or southern, use zero cream in anything but desserts.
The paradoxical fact is that eating fat makes you thin. It's eating carbs that make you fat.
ReplyDeleteTrue for me. I eat lots of meat, cheese and butter, and am thin at 56 (34 waist). I do walk about 10miles a week. Oh by the way, Italians don't use cream in their recipes outside of cannoli and St. Honore cakes.
"(As a man of principle, he also abhors Jewish ethnocentrism...)"
ReplyDeleteMore likely, he opposes Zionism in principle but supports it in practice simply by not doing anything to actively oppose it.
If you don't actively oppose Zionism, you are pro-Zionist by default since American policy is so utterly pro-Zionist.
It's like if a train you're on is going one way, and if you don't actively try to reverse its direction, you are in effect in agreement with where it's going. Because even if you sit still and don't support where it's going, it's 'naturally' going that way anyway and you're being taken there just the same.
So, unless Jews actively oppose Zionism, they might as well be for it since US policy is so utterly pro-Zionist. It's not enough to oppose something only in principle when the practice of the society you're part of is to be utterly for it.
So, when liberal Jews absolve themselves from Israeli abuses against Palestinians because they aren't as fervently supportive of Israel as neocons are, they are being disingenuous. In a way, they are worse for having the cake and eat it too. They know that Jewish power directed American policy to be utterly pro-Zionist, but they think they themselves are 'innocent' because they don't wave the Israeli flag all the time like neocons.
This is where Chuck Hagel is useful to liberal Jews. They can make believe that in supporting the more 'fair-minded' Obama and Hagel, they aren't as bad as neocon Jews and their goy puppets.
But let's look at the facts. Obama, unlike Bush and McCain and Romney, may not have OPENLY and ACTIVELY support the Israeli settlments in West Bank. That may make him more 'fair', but given that US policy under him is still so pro-Israel, Obama is, in effect, just as much as whore and puppet as the likes of Bush, McCain, and Romney.
Unless Obama openly and actively opposes and reverses the US policy on Israel, he might as well be for it--and of course he is.
But Jews prefer Obama because he keeps American alavishness to Israel under the cover.
When conservatives yammer about supporting Israel, Jews hear, 'JEWS GOT THE POWER AND WE MUST KISS JEWISH ASS'. Jews don't want that. It's embarrassing, especially as they want us to see them as 'victims'.
"The paradoxical fact is that eating fat makes you thin. It's eating carbs that make you fat."
ReplyDeleteNonsense. It all depends on what you do and how you live. If you're very active, you'll burn carbs all the time. The problem is many Americans are not active and load up on carbs.
As for fat making you thin, you wanna tell me a fat person can get skinny by loading up on butter and cream? Gimme a break.
I have no trouble with a lot of SWPL pleasures and tastes, no trouble at all. My own taste-set isn't entirely SWPL, still... Nice neighborhoods, nice cars, nice foods and great vacation destinations.
ReplyDeleteFWIW, many years back, on its opening day, I took a tour through a slaughterhouse, following the first creature being processed. Turned me into a vegetarian for years. I was rocked not just by the fate of the animals (pigs in this case) as by the fate of the workers. Christ what awful jobs. One poor slob was slitting open the just-killed creatures' bellies, and reaching in and scooping out the steaming guts onto a metal tray. That was his 8 hour a day job. Imagine a work life spent that way.
I eat meat these days because I feel a lot better when I do, but I make efforts to buy the stuff that's said to be more humanely raised and slaughtered. I hope that the workers (as well as the animals) involved are treated better than workers in conventional slaughterhouses.
As usual, I was all wrong. Bacon is currently in; not just with fast-food fans, but with NPR foodies as well, who are infusing bacon into all manner of things, some of which sound pretty gross to me.

Shaggy dog story: In grad school I worked in the library sorting maps. My boss told me that the fellow who had the job before me saved his cash and made a bike tour of the Philippine countryside.
ReplyDeleteHe told her that at one rural home he spent an afternoon playing with the family dog. Later, they invited him in for dinner, and made a big deal out of it as he was probably the first foreign guest they'd ever had.
He was impressed, and said, "This is pretty good meat. We must be sure to save some for the dog."
The family had a raucous good laugh. That's when he realized just where the dog was...

No one orders Charcuterie either; you got my point that I was using = as shorthand without having to be mind-numbingly pedantic and explaining what I meant in excruciatingly exact and correct detail when a much shorter and more easily understood shorthand got the point across much more easily and effortlessly. So thanks for pointing that out.

ReplyDeleteI wonder if the Paleo thing is a way to push back against the idealization of low-meat, high-carb Asian and to a lesser but still noticeable extent, Jewish food.
ReplyDeleteAsians and Jews are pretty high-carb and thin of course, but it's nice to believe that you can stay slim wolfing pork and steak and avoiding bagels and rice.
I never really thought about that stealth aspect until just now. Thanks, Steve Sailer commenters!

The thin Jews I have met have not been high carb, but have really eaten just like other rich people.
Relatively high prevalence of satiating strongly flavored satisfying food (tends to have a goodly amount of protein and vegetables in it, but that's not necessarily the main ingredient by volume). They don't eat much that is specifically Jewish. Much the same with Asians.
The diet of poor White English people has historically tended to be very carb heavy - potatoes and bread for everything.
"Jewish food" (i.e. the food Jews in Eastern Europe made when they outgrew their financier niche and were thus confined to poverty) and the food of fairly poor people are not dissimilar.
Jews are thin? That's news to me.
