I recently asked if anybody has checked whether Hispanic voters, the majority of whom are of Mexican background, actually like Senator Marco Rubio (R-CUBA).
A reader points me to this December survey by Public Policy Polling of 700 registered voters, showing approval ratings for potential 2016 candidates. Among the 90 or so Hispanic voters surveyed, only 24% were favorable toward Rubio, while 42% said they were were unfavorable. (34% were not sure.)
Rand Paul did slightly better among Hispanics, 28-39, as did Paul Ryan (42-48) and Mike Huckabee (33-39). Rick Santorum, at 24-41, edged out Rubio. Jeb Bush, the Great Brown Hope-in-Law, was at 32-49. To Hispanics, the big man among potential GOP candidates was Chris Christie at 52-22.
Caveat: tiny sample size.
But still, is there any polling evidence that Rubio Fiebre is anything other than a collective delusion among white Republicans?
It really is puzzling.
ReplyDeleteWhy would a Mexican Indian living in America prefer to vote for a white conquistador from Cuba?
Mexicans came to America to escape 500 years of domination and exploitation by these guys and now, all of a sudden, they are supposed to love Conquistador-Americans because Nixon called them all "Hispanic"?
Marco Rubio = the Cuban Allan Keyes.
ReplyDeleteThe stereotype that Republicans are relatively stupid and out of it has some truth to it.
Like all stereotypes.
the GOP theory is that after passing the Obama-Rubio Amnesty, presidential candidate Rubio will benefit since Obama cannot run anymore in 2016.
ReplyDeleteThe Republican party leadership must be the single most stupid group of people on Earth. No idea is so idiotic, so self-destructive, so contra-factual that they will not fervently embrace it. It often seems that idiotic, self-destructive and contra-factual are the qualities they most desire.
ReplyDeleteMe, I want what's coming to me.
ReplyDeleteWhat's coming to you?
The world chico, and everything in it.
"But still, is there any polling evidence that Rubio Fiebre is anything other than a collective delusion among white Republicans?"
ReplyDeleteNope, but the men who buy congressmen certainly love him. On their behalf, he's betrayed his base on immigration enforcement almost as soon as he got the chance. Only Jeff Flake is faster at proving himself a liar. Flake supported the 2006 & 2007 amnesty bills, then when running for senate just four months ago proclaimed himself a born-again enforcer. Now he's back to his old self in no time flat.
Krispy Christie gets 52% approval among Hispanics, Marco Rubio only gets 24%. Both have about the same immigration ideas. That's proof that Hispanics want welfare.
ReplyDeleteAmong ALL demographics, Chris Christie is "the big man among potential GOP candidates".
ReplyDeleteThe audience for minority Republican candidates is not really minorities -- it's suburban Whites whose crippling racial anxieties are soothed by the act of voting for a non-White. Part of the theatre necessary for this stratagem to be effective, however, is a highly visible outreach effort to minority voters, even if it's doomed.
ReplyDeleteThe only racial groups that seem, to me, as though they could be fertile ground for Republicans on the issues are Asian-Americans and (subcontinental) Indian-Americans. Obviously, Republicans have totally failed to make inroads in these populations (and their geographic concentrations mean they're probably not hugely valuable, electorally), but given that the American system has generally worked extremely well for them, they would probably be more receptive to Republican messages than Hispanics or African-Americans.
If the big guy somehow gets nomination after the next set of GOP primaries, I can imagine this finally causing a serious third party candidate run in many states.
ReplyDeleteOf course not, since he is a REPUBLICAN. White Anglo republican politicians are even LESS popular.
ReplyDeleteDid does not, in any way, shape or form, indicate that Mexicans consider Rubio a "white guy", which is what you seem to be implying. Rubio's popularity might even be LOWER if they didn't think he is Latino and non-white.
Nick Diaz:"Of course not, since he is a REPUBLICAN. White Anglo republican politicians are even LESS popular."
ReplyDeleteAh, Nicky, good to have you back; guess you didn't bother to read the post. White Anglo Republicans are more popular than White Hispanic Rubio. Need to work on the ESL, mate.
Nick Diaz:"Did does not, in any way, shape or form, indicate that Mexicans consider Rubio a "white guy", which is what you seem to be implying. Rubio's popularity might even be LOWER if they didn't think he is Latino and non-white."
....and just imagine how much more popular with Mexican mestizos Rubio would be if he were not a White Hispanic.
Nick Diaz:"Of course not, since he is a REPUBLICAN. White Anglo republican politicians are even LESS popular."

Hispanics, especially Mexicans, have have rates of obesity. Maybe that is why they admire Christie more than any other Republican.
ReplyDeleteNope, but the men who buy congressmen certainly love him. On their behalf, he's betrayed his base on immigration enforcement almost as soon as he got the chance.
ReplyDeleteHey, my congressman has that beat. Not only does his stand on immigration vary depending on the point in the election cycle. Not only does it vary depending upon which group in his constituency he's addressing. And not only does he bob and weave and weasel during a public meeting among constituents with opposing views. No, I saw him pronounce straightforward and diametrically opposed - "close and enforce" vs. "open borders woo-hoo!" - stands to two voters during questions at the same meeting, the second of whom immediately followed the first.
It was a wonder to behold. I'm waiting for one of these clowns to break on through to a whole new wondrous eerie counter-intuitive universe of mendacity, and demonstrate some kind of weird political reverse quantum simultaneity, standing up for both views at once with exactly the same words, to the same person.
The Rubio vs. Christie comparison among (overwhelmingly Meso-American) Hispanics doesn't surprise me too much.
ReplyDeleteAfter all, Univision's been feuding with Rubio, and anyway most Hispanics probably consider him a snotty Cuban.
Meanwhile, Christie comes across as a blue-collar, working-class urban Catholic type. Since most Hispanics are also blue-collar, working-class urban Catholic types, they probably see him as pretty similar...
I wonder why they like Christie so much over Rubio.
ReplyDeleteIt could be because Christie looks more like a Latin style political leader, like a caudillo, than Rubio does. He's physically large, populist oriented, etc.
This is less about wining the mexican vote as about winning Jewish elite's approval. Media have been bashing GOP as lacking diversity and being anti-immigrant, so GOP wants to win media favor with this gimmick. So, gop is diddling with rubio's cube.
ReplyDeleteIt's way past time for a real third-party. One that's really conservative on social issues and economic issues, puts native-born Americans first, and that will get us out of the international entanglements that Washington so wisely warned us against. The Republicans are certainly not that party. The dimocrats are its antithesis.
ReplyDelete(something about losing the superbowl, knee jerk reactions and immediately changing quarterbacks, making a huge mistake...)
ReplyDeleteI don't know that I trust PPP with their polls that are a long way from actual elections. It seems that alot of these polls push a narrative that would be damaging to Republicans, and I don't know that they are trustworthy. If we get a second poll from a different outfit that telss the same story, then ok.
ReplyDeleteAlso Rubio does potentially scratch the itch of white moderates who would like an excuse to vote GOP but not for those icky white males. How much of the electorate that is is TBD.
ReplyDeleteWhat? There's still something called a Republican party?
At least Hitler's "stab in the back" grudge had a grain of truth in it. Our entire political class inhabits the Multi-Culti Diversity Fairyland, leaving the rest of us to dwell, with our purses emptied and our teeth gnashing, in the real world which their Dream Actions force us to endure living in and paying for: since 1965 our entire political class has operated increasingly, and now operates totally, on its members' stab-us-in-our-face basis.
To Hispanics, the big man among potential GOP candidates was Chris Christie at 52-22.
ReplyDeleteCan you blame them, though? Christie has much nicer tits.
What else we got other than Rubio Fever?
ReplyDeleteAre you suggesting that we run actual, you know, white men, for public office?
Rubio's exposure is just now beginning, Steve. That's not to say I expect Hispanics to swoon once he does get higher name recognition, but I began watching him intently as he rose from the FLA Senate to beat a popular Charlie Crist in the GOP primary. He's a really good speaker.
ReplyDeleteRubio's problem will be the same problem all GOP candidates have on a national level--a Democratic press that goes after him to destroy him before he can gain sustainable steam. If he makes it to the top through the primaries on top, just watch what the press will do to him against a Dem candidate. (Were he Democrat, the press would present him as Hispanic, you know that. Because he's Republican, they'll make it clear that we must now separate Hispanic of Spanish/Euro origin from Hispanic of Central/South American origin. They'll be all over the place on what's "Hispanic" but not in an intellectually honest, HBD way.) In fact, I suppose we might prepare ourselves for the Conquistador stories with attempts to say that Marco is really one of the bullies, right? This argument, however, will run smack dab up against the story of his dad's having been a bartender who worked overtime, worked weddings, and banquets any chance he got in order to give his kids a chance to do better down the road.
If I'm the head of the GOP, I do all I can in the next few years to go after the networks through the anchors and talk show hosts who bend and edit every story to suit the needs of the Democratic Party. I mean, I *seriously* go after the Brian Williams' of the group, the people who sought to crucify George Zimmerman, all the people in charge who don't even bother to investigate stories before reporting on them.
For 4 years, I pound the press and I do it with some Hollywood people whom the people like, such as the Kelsey Grammers who are out there. I plant my people on their morning shows purportedly to talk of other things, then I embarrass the Charlie Rose's, the Matt Lauers, etc. with innuendo about their "reporting."
I set up someone for a George Bush I/Dan Rather moment.
I do all this in the hope that by the time the next Presidential election rolls around, the viewers of those networks will have begun questioning anything those on-camera folks say or with the hope that "those people" have learned they can no longer get away with their constant schmoozing and propagandizing on air. Even now, I'd be picking my victim, my symbol of all that is biased and bigoted in network news, all that represents bad journalism, and I'd be planning the stealth attacks to come.
The GOP has forgotten what it means to be cutthroat in politics.
A lot of you sounds as if you've not heard Rubio speak on the stump. He is very good.
ReplyDelete"The stereotype that Republicans are relatively stupid and out of it has some truth to it."
ReplyDeleteI've never heard the "relatively" part. That must be your addition.
We need to harp on this constantly, and maybe get it through some heads. Riffed on and linked to here:
ReplyDeletehttp://ex-army.blogspot.com/2013/02/the-rubio-ruckus.html
Yeah well, what the GOP is doing is what the vast majority of White people are doing, and that is to avoid conflict with nonWhites. That is the unspoken top priority. And they are not so much going for the Hispanic vote with imbeciles like Rubio as they are going for the Left-wing sanctimonious twit vote. They will get neither.
ReplyDeleteAs Vox Day says, the GOP needs to become the open party of Whites and their interests or another party will supplant them as the de facto White Party. Huge numbers of Whites would rally to such a party. I know I would.
If either of these things happen, then conflict will be at an unbelievably high level. I'd prefer it to begin now. It WILL happen, and lying government numbers aside, I think Whites are already outnumbered.
To Hispanics, the big man among potential GOP candidates was Chris Christie at 52-22.
ReplyDeleteCaveat: tiny sample size.
Nothing involving Christie is tiny.
Anglo-Irish singer-songwriter Morrissey has a substantial Hispanic following. Perhaps the Republican party could recruit him?
ReplyDeleteHe'll go the way of Jindal and Steele. You'd think the GOP would learn something about tokenism as a tactic by now.
ReplyDeleteChristie's got dem Joisey funbags. That's why they love him.
ReplyDeleteWhat's with terms like 'quantitative easing', 'fiscal cliff' and now 'sequester'?
ReplyDeleteIs it a way to hoodwink us?
We're running out of money, but hey, let's talk about 'qe' and 'fiscal whatever' and 'sequester'.
semoticians took over politics?
Well he's not Piyush "Bobby" Jindal! (Who btw bears a striking resemblance to TV's Bob "Gilligan" Denver.)Personally I want a white Christian,er,little c christian, heh heh heh,not one of those raving nuts, for Prez. Obama is black and he really hates white people. Having a Prez who is of a foreign and hostile minority? Not a good idea. Re Rubio:Why is it that the Cubans have sustained Fidel lo these many years, even tho he is by his own admission a complete failure, and they would fight like hell even today to keep their "revolution"? Because Fidel got rid of jack-holes like Rubio and his Cuban brothers! Let this ass-hat Rubio run in Kooba and see what happens, yet he is the Savior of White America??
ReplyDeleteThe Stupid Party believes they can win the majority of the Mexican vote if they put up a Cuban candidate who's last ends in vowel.
ReplyDeleteItalians, Portuguese, Brazilians, and Filipinos also have last names that end in a vowel. Will the Stupid Party in the future try to pick a a Filipino American, Portuguese American, Brazilian American or Italian American candidate to try to appeal to Mexican voters ? Even though none of those groups speak Spanish.
Is the Anglo Saxon Stupid Party mentality that all people who's last name ends in a vowel all belong to the same race and there for all culturally relate to each other and speak the same mother language ?
34% of voters get marco rubio mixed up with mario cuomo.
ReplyDeleteTo Hispanics, the big man among potential GOP candidates was Chris Christie at 52-22.
ReplyDeleteThat's because they see Christie and subconsciously think free milk from the government.
I'm not surprised that Christie is so popular. He's got that maternal touch with his bosom.

Did does not, in any way, shape or form, indicate that Mexicans consider Rubio a "white guy", which is what you seem to be implying. Rubio's popularity might even be LOWER if they didn't think he is Latino and non-white.
Sailer has implied that he is white in any meaningful racial demagogic aspect and, correctly, that Mexicans are more sophisticated than just about everybody else because they see him as a Cuban (and representing a rival group within the vast "Hispanic" category; I mean, if Rubio gets to be the first Hispanic president one of theirs doesn't) whereas white Republican operatives and other assorted idiots see him as part of an indistinguishable brown mass of mediocrity.
Isn't it fitting that his big putsch centered on his cover story in Time, a publication long ago lapsed into irrelevance and now just lapsing? What an honor to be among the last ravings of the desperate and delusional (that would be the magazine, not the Republican Party)!
It did seem to drive Ted Cruz over the deep end though, didn't it?

Crazy off the wall theory on my part:
The Republican open borders/amnesty lobby are floating Rubio, knowing the media will damage him irreparably by the time late 2015 or so comes around, because they're using Rubio as a front to bird dog for who they really want: Jeb Bush.

I think this sums it up. A lot of upper middle class Republicans eat up diversity as much as Democrats, but put their own twist on it. They blame the problems associated with diversity on liberal brainwashing of minorities instead. Many of these types are the same people who get really stoked about expensive chain restaurants, 3rd world mission trips, lattes at their churches, and charter schools. They may be successful but they are completely devoid of common sense.
GOP... now officially the

the

Now that Obama got away with his shtick, how many mulattos will attempt the same thing by playing the smooth jazz negro?

ReplyDelete"Ah, Nicky, good to have you back; guess you didn't bother to read the post. White Anglo Republicans are more popular than White Hispanic Rubio. Need to work on the ESL, mate."
No, they are not. Romney had something like 4% of the Latino vote. That is appallingly low, and much lower than the share of Latino votes that Rubio gets.
And why should I work on ESL? My English is much better than yours, both grammatically as well as orthographically.
To Diaz;
ReplyDeleteHe sure looks like a white guy to me!
If I ever had a 9/11 operator ask me if he was black, white or hispanic, I would reply white without a second's hesitation.
ReplyDeleteNicky Diaz:"No, they are not. Romney had something like 4% of the Latino vote. That is appallingly low, and much lower than the share of Latino votes that Rubio gets."
Ah, Nicky, so little knowledge. Romney, according to CNN, got 27% of the Hispanic vote. I have no idea where you got the 4% figure (UNIVISION, perhaps?).And, if you would bother to actually read Steve's post, you would see that a host of Anglo GOP politicos have better "favorable" ratings than Rubio. Chris Christie, for example, has a rating of 52%, vs Rubio's 24%.
Nicky Diaz:"And why should I work on ESL? My English is much better than yours, both grammatically as well as orthographically."
No need to be so touchy about your bad English, Nicky. A lot of foreigners have trouble with it. For help with your ESL, try your local community college.
Whatever you do, please don't stop posting on Steve's site. Your stuff is comedy gold.

-Relative depends on whom or what the comparison is made against. They're wicked smart compared to your average NAM, or against the wisdom of nearly all liberal ideas, for example. But their elevators don't seem to go to the top floor to most paleoconservatives here.
"We need to harp on this constantly, and maybe get it through some heads. Riffed on and linked to here:

We need to do more than harp and riff on it; the only reason amnesty didn't go through a few years back, was because the public complained so much to their elected officials. We'll need to do that again if there is any hope of shutting the nonsense down.
Krispy Christie gets 52% approval among Hispanics, Marco Rubio only gets 24%. Both have about the same immigration ideas. That's proof that Hispanics want welfare.
ReplyDeleteIt's proof that the poll polled Puerto Ricans rather than Hispanics. Mexicans in this country have no idea who Christie is or what he stands for.
And why should I work on ESL? My English is much better than yours, both grammatically as well as orthographically.
ReplyDeleteIt never fails. You made a grammatical error, champ. You must either use "and" where you used "as well as" or delete the "both".

ReplyDeleteBingo: lots of organizations out there right now pushing narratives and payimg pollsters, and you all know that you can get a poll to come out just about any ole wqay you want it to by wording the questions just so.
Most Americans have absolutely no idea who Marco Rubio is. Most Americans, most voting Americans even, have never listened to a one of his speeches or part of one of his speeches.
"lots of organizations out there right now pushing narratives and payimg pollsters"
ReplyDeleteThere's a lot of money and power pushing Rubio now, so no doubt you could find a poll proving that Mexicans love Rubio. Right? Just paste its URL in below.

ReplyDeleteexactly. this is completely how lamestream conservatives think on these matters. they believe that if it were not for progressive brainwashing fostering a resentment and entitlement mentality, minorities would become the happy little unhyphenated brigades they have always pined for and go marching off with them into their joyful propostional future where everybody, regardless of race, religion or language disregard their differences as they are all united by the commonalities of their shared admiration for the efficacy of free markets and israel's interminable strategic and moral value to the united states.
there's a very powerful strain of contradiction to their rhetoric if you think about it. they talk about how the language and ideas of the left are ultimately at their core "racist" because they deny the agency of minorities. they say all ethnic disparities that exist are the result of a culture which has been sustained by leftist rhetoric that at its core denies minorities their own self-responsibility and agency, yet at the same time they do the exact same thing in the same breath, by implicitly conceding that minorities are so easily controlled, influenced and directed by left wing aggrievement/resentment politics.
" They're wicked smart compared to your average NAM, or against the wisdom of nearly all liberal ideas, for example."
ReplyDeleteThat depends upon how one looks at it. If you have the Rand Corporation doing million dollar surveys for you, and after 30 years since the amnesty, you can't figure out that Mexicans consider themselves "Mexican" not Hispanic, you're quite stupid by any standards.
Is the Anglo Saxon Stupid Party mentality that all people who's last name ends in a vowel all belong to the same race and there for all culturally relate to each other and speak the same mother language ?
ReplyDeleteHeh heh... Plenty of non-Latins have their surname ending in a vowel. Finns, Poles, Persians, Japanese: quite the diversity.

Where are the sources for these stats? I doubt them very, very much. After all, Rubio did become U.S senator in a state full of Latinos but Romney failed to become president.

"Gramar" is actually spelled "grammar."
