The Washington Post runs the Associated Press's report on Oberlin:
Student: Racist postings on campus of Oberlin College meant as a ‘joke’
By Associated Press, Published: August 25
OBERLIN, Ohio — An Oberlin College student acknowledged posting anti-Islam fliers and racist cards around the campus of the historically liberal Ohio university earlier this year, saying he meant them as a “joke” to provoke a reaction, according to statements he made after being detained by campus security.
The student also took credit for the display of a large Nazi flag, which he also said he meant as a joke, and posting the face of Oberlin’s president onto a picture of Adolf Hitler, according to the statements contained in an Oberlin city police report.
The student, detained after allegedly being seen posting anti-Islam fliers in the college’s Science Center Feb. 27, denied involvement in other, earlier racist postings and said he was trying to show people had overreacted to them.
The student, whose name was blacked out, said the people who put up earlier fliers were just looking for attention.
“I put out these fliers to get a similar over-reaction to prove this point,” the student said, according to the report.
A series of postings and incidents over the winter caused an uproar at Oberlin, enrollment 2,900, one of the nation’s first universities to admit blacks. Black History Month posters were defaced, a “whites only” sign placed above a water fountain and a swastika drawn on a window. In early March, classes were canceled after a report of someone wearing what looked like a Ku Klux Klan-type hooded robe on campus.
A second student detained the same day denied helping make a swastika banner placed in the center and also denied he knew what his friend was up to, saying he was just tagging along, according to his statement.
Police declined to file charges but Oberlin College spokesman Scott Wargo said Friday both students are going through the school’s disciplinary system.
“You had fliers with threats of violence and hate speech and rape that are being posted on doors and in hallways and on mailboxes,” Wargo said, adding: “It didn’t make it less real for those who had to endure it firsthand, and creating an atmosphere where people are afraid and feel threatened — it isn’t a joke.”
I seem to recall that some time before the 90s students were not "detained" for provocative acts. The about face on campus tolerance since progressives took over administrations is arresting.
ReplyDelete"Liberia students all fail university admission exam"
ReplyDeletehttp://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-23843578
"Liberia's education minister says she finds it hard to believe that not a single candidate passed this year's university admission exam.
Nearly 25,000 school-leavers failed the test for admission to the University of Liberia, one of two state-run universities."
...
"However, this is the first time that every single student who wrote the exam for a fee of $25 (£16) has failed, our reporter says.
It means that the overcrowded university will not have any new first-year students when it reopens next month for the academic year, he adds.
Students told him the result was unbelievable and their dreams had been shattered, our reporter says.
Education Minister Etmonia David-Tarpeh told the BBC Focus on Africa programme that she intended to meet university officials to discuss the failure rate.
"I know there are a lot of weaknesses in the schools but for a whole group of people to take exams and every single one of them to fail, I have my doubts about that," Ms David-Tarpeh said. "It's like mass murder."
Ms David-Tarpeh said she knew some of the students and the schools they attended.
"These are not just schools that will give people grades. I'd really like to see the results of the students," she added.
University spokesman Momodu Getaweh told BBC Focus on Africa that the university stood by its decision, and it would not be swayed by "emotion".
"In English, the mechanics of the language, they didn't know anything about it. So the government has to do something," he said."
Yippies were stupid, but I honor them for nominating Pigasus. As president, it would have ended the hogocaust.

It still baffles me that students could be arrested by the police for these things. Vandalism charges are the only thing I can think of that might possibly apply. But then why not charge political campaigns with vandalism for stapling posters and placards everywhere?
ReplyDeleteI suppose these students committed the crime of hurting people's feelings. Although you would be hard-pressed to find many people come forward to say their feelings are hurt, outside of the professionally offended.
Of course the AP report contains nothing about the students' specific political leanings or affiliations, as it undoubtedly would have if they were Tea Partiers or had volunteered for Romney. It doesn't even spend a sentence explaining the real story behind the "KKK sighting". I wonder if this is the full original article or if a WAPO editor cut parts "for clarity".
ReplyDeleteIt wasn't a joke, it was an agenda-loaded racial hoax.
ReplyDeleteBut what's a little semantics between friends?
i don't think the gov't even keeps track of hate crime hoaxes. which is a travesty.
ReplyDeleteIs this student the leftwinger of last week's news? And if so, how the hell is that tidbit of info not in the article?
ReplyDeleteIt wasn't a joke, it was an agenda-loaded racial hoax.
ReplyDeleteBut what's a little semantics between friends?
Yes. Kind of the modern version of the good ol' Blood Libel, but with white male KKKonservatives as the target.
Slightly OT, but I hear Martin Luther King III say that the shooting of Trayvon Martin was murder. Since George Zimmerman was acquitted of murder in a court of law, does he have grounds to sue for slander? It would be great to see the King family lose a lawsuit. They are horrible, money-grubbing people, demanding payment even for the use of MLK's words carved on his monument.
ReplyDeleteIt seems to me that black "leaders" are treated like children--we are not supposed to take their outbursts seriously, however hyperbolic, slanderous, or rabble-rousing. I would like them to be taken seriously as they are responsible for a great deal of the racial rancor in this country. I interact with blacks almost daily on a perfectly amicable basis, but people like Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, and MLK III stir up all sorts of unpleasant thoughts in me.
Dylan Bleier is a nice Jewish kid. He and his sister, Julia Bleier, were raised by their parents Alan Bleier and his wife Lauren Frisch.
ReplyDeleteDylan's dad is not an upscale Jewish guy, however. He is a nanolithography engineer at Cornell.
Smart and well educated, but without that drive for money-getting. At 55 (or so) he is still a research associate.
According to the internet, they do things like donate to AIDS charities, join sustainable agriculture groups and in general fight for "social justice".
The Bleiers lived in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts for several years when Dylan was a kid. Jamaica Plain is a 55% white, 24% Mexican, and 13% black suburb of Boston.
As the kids grew older the environment became increasingly dangerous for their kids and they had to leave, so they did the liberal white-flight thing and headed upstate to Ithaca, NY, called "New York's most liberal town" by ePodunk.
But Ithaca is only 73% white. A vast improvement over Jamaica Plain, but well shy of "safe" and "well-educated". So the Bleiers live in the even whiter and more elitist "Ithaca EcoVillage".
The Ithaca EcoVillage is a almost 100% white-flight/Jewish-flight enclave for college-educated liberals who don't have enough money to buy into a gated community but nonetheless enjoy the safety of virtually all-white community. You know the drill: "sustainable living", "recycling", "community activism", "social justice", "global warming", all the standard outlets for Tikkun Olam. If you don't do community activism and volunteering stuff, you don't get to live in the EcoVillage. It is a very effective way for white liberals to keep out blacks and white goy trash and simultaneously claim the moral high ground because they are "doing it for Mother Earth". Twenty-first Century Kryptonite against any multiculturalist attack.
The Bleiers are doing well. Not making so much money, perhaps, but they live in a racially-segregated community. The EcoVillage is structured as a "housing cooperative", which means the residents can make every owner or renter agree to special terms and conditions … or they don't get to live or rent there. So Upper East Side.
Just think of it. No Section 8! No colored folks! If the "Membership Committee" doesn't want you, you don't get in!

Can you delete the personal info that links to Alan R. Bleier in Big Bobs post? A little distasteful.
ReplyDeleteYeah, linking to his family is kind-of shitty.
ReplyDeleteThis kind of assinine behavior is very common among college students. Offensive posters, crude humor, nasty jokes, streaking across the field during a public event, other idiotic attention-seeking behavor--all commonplace. The only thing special about these assholes is that their particular attention-seeking behavior fed into a story lots of news reporters wanted to tell, and so we got lots of credulous news coverage of the whole thing.
@ Harry Baldwin:
ReplyDeleteGood observation about black leaders being treated as children. I couldn't agree more!
Plus, it isn't just that black leaders should be held accountable for the "racial rancor" they're responsible for; I think it works the other way too: if we (all of us, black and white) expect more from them, better ones might show up.
Some people incorrectly believe that good black leaders are the panacea that will save black people, but the opposite view--that black leaders are necessarily inconsequential--is surely wrong too. I believe a good black leader could be very positive for black people in many ways.
The closest I can think of to someone who would have made a genuinely great black leader in the last half-century is Bill Cosby. But Cosby couldn't be taken seriously as a black leader, both because he's first and foremost an entertainer, and he committed the cardinal sin of--gasp!--having criticisms of black culture!!
So, it might be impossible for there to be a good black leader who can be taken seriously until criticizing black culture gets reclassified into something closer to acceptability.
"Bottom line: If you don't do community activism and volunteering stuff, you don't get to live in the EcoVillage."
ReplyDeleteBottom line: discrimination. Women and minorities hardest hit.
Cue music:
Disparate impact here we come, right back where we started from.
This will scream disparate impact.
Disparate impact for me, but not for thee.

Wouldn't you just love to do an undercover social science project where you send in poor minorities to apply and see if they can get accepted.
Fat Bill,
ReplyDeleteMissed the part where you proved their Jewishnes (your crack investigative skills may have floundered on the Delaware Bleiers) but once you do I'll be happy to apologize on behalf of all Jews everywhere and to feel real real ashamed to be part of such an ignoble race.
If only I were one of your people! Ah, to dwell on that backwoods dungheap of a race inbred Big and Fat Bills and Billettes. What I wouldn't give for to be one of you...
Wouldn't you just love to do an undercover social science project where you send in poor minorities to apply and see if they can get accepted.
