Chinese outsmart Mexicans in Prop. 209 struggle

The Hispanic Electoral Tidal Wave has long been described in the media as so overwhelming that the Republicans' only option is the triple bankshot Hail Mary play of augmenting it by passing Amnesty and A Path to Citizenship. And yet, in heavily Mexican California, Hispanics don't seem to punch their weight, as demonstrated in the current dust-up between Hispanic and Asian Democrats over whether to gut the 1996 Proposition 209 constitutional amendment outlawing affirmative action in college admissions.
Bill putting race in play in university admissions is shelved
Posted on Monday, March 17 at 1:31pm | By Matier and Ross

Legislative leaders shelved a measure Monday that would have allowed California’s public universities once again to consider race when deciding which students to admit.
Assembly Speaker John Perez, D-Los Angeles, said he was sending SCA5 — a proposed constitutional amendment that would restore racial and gender preferences for public university admissions — to a special task force for further study.
Perez made the announcement after it became clear the proposal didn’t have enough Democratic support to win the two-thirds Assembly vote needed to send it to the ballot.
As we reported earlier Monday, three Asian American state senators — San Francisco’s Leland Yee, Ted Lieu of Torrance (Los Angeles County) and Carol Liu of La CaƱada/Flintridge (Los Angeles County) — had urged Perez to put the brakes on the effort. All three voted for the amendment when the Senate approved it, but they had second thoughts when they started hearing from Asian American constituents who feared that giving preferences to African American and Latino students would make it harder for their children to get into competitive University of California campuses.

The amendment, sponsored by state Sen. Ed Hernandez, D-West Covina (Los Angeles County), had initially passed out of the Senate with full backing from Democrats. Monday’s action sending it off to a joint Assembly-Senate task force, which plans to hold hearings up and down the state, ensures it won’t come to an Assembly vote anytime soon.
Hernandez said “scare tactics and misinformation used by certain groups opposed to SCA5″ prompted a need for the hearings.

Judging by today's announcement, as Alternate Universe Stalin might have said, quality has a quantity all its own.

I think this is less 'punching above your weight', than it is surprise that so many Asians were paying attention.

After all Affirmative Action was around before and then Asians were quiet.

AA's vs AA?

An interesting dilemma for the Democratic party press (e.g. LA Times or NY Times):who is the villain, the Chinese-Americans or the Mexican-Americans ? (I am assuming legal residency all round, which may be a stretch).
How will the media deal with this game of racial rock/paper/scissors?
I suggest that they will look for some solution which gives both sides a little something, at the expense of lower/middle class whites.

"...quality has a quantity all its own..."

This was shown especially clearly by the event that founded Mexico, when about 500 Spaniards conquered an empire of about 5 million people.

I have found that not all Chinese are paying attention.

The Asians finally figured out that Affirmative Action quotas screw them to the wall. Welcome to the GOP. Better late than never.

That is interesting. After all, it was an African American, Ward Connerly who pushed for Prop. 209, right? So Asian Americans weren't aggressive about getting a fair shot at the UC schools, but, now that they dominate there, are aggressive about maintaining their dominance?

I doubt it. Except for the Koreans they still have some very silly attitudes to the second.

#1 on Asians' list of priorities is the future income stream of their kids. #2 is the prestige they derive from their kids' careers.

Here's what I don't get about the original supposed Stalin quote Steve cleverly reverses. Isn't that basic orthodox Marxism. Doesn't Marx himself say precisely that? Why does Stalin get credit for the observation?

Try again in 30 years when whites will be clamoring for it so they can get in to majority Asian

Did Stalin even say that? A lot of quotes get attached to a historical figure somewhat arbitrarily.

It's not so much that the Asians outsmarted Mexicans, as much as they're more energized. Mexicans are so apathetic and lethargic that they honestly couldn't care less if their kids make it to UC Berkely. A lot of them hardly seem to care if their kids make it through high school.

The good news is that this indicates that if immigration restrictionism ever becomes popular, Mexicans probably won't do much to oppose it. The real obstacle will be Jews and 0.1 percenters, with both groups sure to fight tooth and nail to keep our open borders from closing.

“scare tactics and misinformation used by certain groups opposed to SCA5″

Hey Pal, man up and say who's disagreeing with you. Then, maybe talk with them about why and be open to seeing things without predjudice...

If they're not gonna even pretend anymore, I'm not going to either.

Asians might turn out to be the complete political opposite of the Jews. They are locked in a zero sum game where they have to compete with all the races whereas the Jews seem primarily intent on only competing with whites. In the 1950s and earlier, the GOP though they would ally with their next up and coming elite group to share power with the WASPs but they instead chose to head their own party. There is no more room at the top of the Democratic party, only room at the bottom for more grunts.

So I guess Hernandez is afraid to pull the trigger and call his fellow Democratic Chinese "racist".

No sense starting a Menshevik/Bolshevik civil war in the California Democratic party ... just yet.

I live in California and I rarely see teenage mothers in the Chinese American community.

Teenage mothers in the Mexican American community however are a dime a dozen.

I wonder why teenage Mexican American girls on average are more sexually active than teenage Chinese American girls. Or maybe Chinese American teenage girls on average are just more likely to demand that their boyfriends wear a condom during sex. Hence the lower teen mom pregnancy rate.

Such appeals can only work in a white dominated polity.

By then whites will have been firmly put in their place through constant reminders about white privilege and the absurdity of a minority daring to preach to a majority.

I think you will find both of those groups have quite a degree of common membership.

Jerry Brown, the Asian representatives, and the NAMs will work out a deal to ensure that affirmative action is only used to discriminate against whites.

Someone will politely point out that Jews must not be considered "white" due to the tragic history of oppression they have suffered. Everyone will quickly agree. Only white gentiles must bear the burden of affirmative action.

Problem solved.

Yes, pull up a chair and watch the festivities of affirmative action.

When initially proposed, AA was touted as a temporary measure. Now the word "forevermore" has been appended to it.

nobody outsmarted anybody here.

it's simple democrat politics. they all gotta vote together, or whatever their agenda is on some topic, falls apart. here it looks like just 3 votes was all it took to blow up the whole deal.

this is the only thing keeping the democrats from disarming americans. a few democrats still vote no when that stuff comes up. not in every state though. at the state level, democrats are being very effective and are proceeding steadily with their disarmament program. small arms manufacturers are moving out of states where they are under attack, and most ominously, the situation in connecticut is heading towards a crisis. if the liberals there persist, the shooting may start within a few years.

"Problem solved." - The problem comes from scarcity, and that will inevitably drive the asians and hispanics into conflict on this issue. And whites as well if they should wake up at some point.

If California Repubs had any brains (and they don't) they would have found a way to let it go through the Legislature. They are saddled with a national party that is run by and for Southern Baptist preachers and plutocrats; it's no surprise that they keep getting their butts kicked here when their message is nothing more than Jesus, guns, and tax cuts for billionaires.

Ending affirmative action was abd remains broadly popular. Putting it on the ballot would have driven swing voters back to the Repubs, and would have energized the R base in the next election cycle. I think they would have easily picked up a few seats and ended the Dems' super majority.

As others have noted, it would have split the Dem vote. AA is not popular with anyone except blacks and a handful of Hispanic academics that nobody listens to except college students and reporters. African-Americans are going to keep voting Democratic forever, but they're irrelevant as a voting bloc in this state.

I think this is a tremendous missed opportunity for the Republicans. But of course it isn't Jesus, guns, or tax cuts for billionaires, so they don't care.

Don't people know that Romney likely lost the critical swing states of Colorado and Nevada "because Latino"?

That's 15 electoral votes, homies. Let's see, Obama had 332. 332-15=269. Romney wins! Because Latino; because maths.

Latinos voters are n̶o̶w̶h̶e̶r̶e̶ ̶n̶e̶a̶r̶ ̶a̶s̶ more important than Asians who show up, blacks who show up, single women who show up and whites who do not show up. Maybe not in that order. Because Latino; because maths.

Chinese outsmart Mexicans? Who'd have thunk it. What's next?

Wrong, false. The national Republican Party is run by culturally Left peepul such as Prince Reibus.

I assume that you'd say nicer things about Republicans if only they'd come out even stronger for homosexuality.
