More wacky stuff from the Los Angeles Times that even Tom Wolfe wouldn't dare make up:
V. Stiviano attorney: Someone leaked Sterling tape 'for money'
Joseph Serna
April 30, 2014, 4:04 p.m.
An attorney for V. Stiviano, the woman at the center of the Donald Sterling scandal, said she had permission to record the Clipper's owner and doesn't know who leaked the tape to TMZ.
Calabasas lawyer Mac Nehoray declined to state the purpose of the recording, but said it was "by mutual agreement."
"My client is devastated that this got out," he said, adding that he and Stiviano "have an idea" who released it. He declined to identify that person.
"Someone released it for money," he said.
Stiviano recorded the rants that led to Sterling's banishment from professional basketball and said through her attorney that she was never his mistress.
Contrary to some media reports, Stiviano was not in a romantic relationship with Sterling, her attorney said.
"It's nothing like it's been portrayed," Nehoray said. "She's not the type of person everyone says."
Stiviano stepped outside her home several times Tuesday and always had her face covered with a tinted visor. ...
The conversation occurred at her home in September in the presence of another person and Sterling knew he was being recorded, Nehoray added.
He also said Stiviano and the 80-year-old Clippers owner never had a sexual or romantic relationship and that descriptions of her as his mistress in the media and in a lawsuit filed by Sterling's wife were erroneous.
Rochelle Sterling, who has been married to Donald Sterling for more than 50 years, filed suit against Stiviano in March in an effort to reclaim a $1.8-million apartment, luxury autos and cash he gave her.
With paparazzi tracking her every move, V. Stiviano roller-skated in her driveway Tuesday and said she wanted to be president.
“One day, I will become president of the United States of America and I will change the legislation and laws,” Stiviano said in one of several odd encounters with media camped outside her home. “Modern day history. Civil rights movement.”
Every year or two since the end of the 1980s the United States gets engulfed in a media melee that was prophesied in almost all of its aspects in Tom Wolfe's 1987 novel The Bonfire of the Vanities. Judge Richard A. Posner wrote in the mid-1990s:
"When I first read The Bonfire of the Vanities … it just didn't strike me as the sort of book that has anything interesting to say about the law or any other institution…. I now consider that estimate of the book ungenerous and unperceptive. The Bonfire of the Vanities has turned out to be a book that I think about a lot, in part because it describes with such vividness what Wolfe with prophetic insight (the sort of thing we attribute to Kafka) identified as emerging problems of the American legal system… American legal justice today seems often to be found at a bizarre intersection of race, money, and violence, an intersection nowhere better depicted than in The Bonfire of the Vanities even though the book was written before the intersection had come into view."
Isn't it time we admit that the long-searched for Great American Novel has turned out to be Bonfire? Of course, that might suggest maybe we don't have a Great American Country anymore ...
But who leaked the tape "for money?" Put O.J. Simpson on the case, right away.
ReplyDeleteHow Tom Wolfe was able to predict the future?
ReplyDeleteWe are witnessing the birth of a religion. Like most religions it contains seeds of truth (slavery, segregation, chauvinism) surrounded by a large amount of mythology (Trayvon, campus hate crime hoaxes, the “wage gap”, Paula Deen). It started as a set of principles (tolerance and fairness) that almost everyone values, but just like in other religions, the focus has shifted over time to draconian enforcement of belief in increasingly far-fetched myths. That enforcement consists of public humiliations and forced recantations, just like the Inquisition. God forbid these idiots get hold of some racks and thumbscrews.
ReplyDeleteIf you question whether Joshua made the sun stop, fundamentalist Christians will accuse you of being in league with the devil. If you question whether the races are genetically indistinguishable, the new fundamentalists accuse you of wanting to re-enslave blacks. And like most religions it is easily abused for personal gain.
The MSM accounts of the Sterling affair read like a North Korean press release. Maybe this is just a mass hysteria that will soon pass. We can only hope.
"Calabasas lawyer Mac Nehoray declined to state the purpose of the recording, but said it was "by mutual agreement.""
ReplyDeletethey are trying to get around tokowitz's obvious main line of defense right off the bat.
it wasn't recorded with his consent, but the bad guys are realizing that might be a problem, so they're putting it out there right up front, right away, that yes it was, and please, proceed with banning him, fining him, and taking his team away from him, because that recording will, oh ho ho, be SO admissable in a court of law should toko want to go that way.
"Great _____ Novel" does a disservice to a language as rich as English. We Americans are too plentiful, and English too large (in terms of vocabulary, it's by far the "biggest" language) for one quintessential novel. In my opinion, there have been three American Novels for the ages: Moby-Dick, Bonfire, and Infinite Jest. All three epitomize their era, all three tell stories that haunt, and all three contain the finest imaginable prose.
ReplyDeleteAnd now that the composition teaching in the schools has collapsed, I doubt we'll see another.
Infinite Jest? No. The Great American Novel should also be a great read. That's true of Bonfire, but not Infinite Jest. It's also true of Franzen's Freedom and The Corrections, but Bonfire's prescience vaults it above Franzen's novels.

I wonder why this is not being given full mega wattage by the media????
Not that it matters but so far Sterling has not been subject to any formal judicial process.
ReplyDeleteHe was basically voted off NBA Owners Island by the other owners. Sure they used racism rather than some other form of moral turpitude but so what?
I didn't notice but at least one Black organization did notice things the President was saying:
Obama’s Anti-Black Rant
Obama chose to expand his remarks beyond the early Sixties period, past the triumphs of the Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts, to give a mini-lecture on what went wrong, in his estimation, with the Black Freedom Movement. The result was a brief but vicious slew of slurs against African Americans – the kind of slander you expect to hear on FOX News, or from a half-drunk white guy at a country-western bar.

ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree more.
ReplyDeleteListen, V. Stiviano may be a conniving whore, but you got to like her brass balls approach.
ReplyDeleteAnd, she's very optimistic.

ReplyDeleteThey can just chalk that up to Obama's white side of the family, as in "But of course, and after all, we've always known that the main reason the President's not fully down with the struggle is because he's not black all the way."
Surprised that Michelle didn't publicly comment later on by saying "Of course, what Obama meant to say is that while some progress has been made in some aspects regarding civil rights, as African-Americans we all know that there is still so much work to be done and so many other federal programs to pass."
That would've helped to smooth things over.
A guess: For the NAACCP'S humanitarian man of the year award next month in LA, wouldn't it just be simpler to replace Sterling by giving the award to......Barack Obama?
First the Noble Peace Prize and then the NAACP award. That way, the main focus can remain where it truly belongs, on the President as the culmination as the nation's first black president.
"in terms of vocabulary, it's by far the "biggest" language"
ReplyDeleteThis is false. The biggest Dutch dictionary is slightly larger than the OED and I think there are Chinese dictionaries that are much larger than either of those. The personal vocabulary of individuals depends more on their mental capacity than on their native language.
Why Dutch and Chinese, you ask? Nerdiness. It takes a lot of nerdiness to compile large dictionaries. The biggest German dictionary, the one started by the brothers Grimm and finished only a few years ago, is also about the size of the OED.

ReplyDeleteTeaching people to write fiction is very, very dumb. All of humanity's great literature was written before the birth of the creative writing scam. Originality cannot be taught. It's not like chemistry or medicine where a teacher or a textbook can impart some data to a student. Just telling him "be original" takes 2 seconds and is a waste of time anyway. Either he can or he can not. A class isn't going to change that.

DeleteThis bimbo is so far in over her head at this point she can't walk this back to a safe place. Taping private conversations and releasing them to the media threatens too many powerful interests. Perhaps he'll go with baseball...if he can keep from being arrested for other things.
So on top of it all, she's bat-shit crazy?
ReplyDeleteThis is a strange "happening" It is so obvious it was a set-up but WHY? Someone with deep pocket wanted this Sterling man out of the picture. What would you think if the wife did it just to humiliate him.
ReplyDeleteFrom Bondfire:
ReplyDeleteLet me ask you this. How does he do on his written work? Mr. Rifkind let out a whoop. "WRITTEN work? There hasn't been any written work at Ruppert High for fifteen years! maybe twenty! They take multiple-choice tests. Reading comprehension, that's the big thing. That's all the Board of Education cares about....at Colonel Jacob Ruppert High School, an honor student is somebody who attends class, isn't disruptive, tries to learn, and does all right a reading and arithmetic.
I fear that V. Stiviano could very well be President one day.
ReplyDeleteComprehensive immigration reform and a burgeoning low information undertow could make it happen.
To be honest, I didn't get the rationale for the emphasis on Sterling until I watched all I could tolerate of CNN's 'Wall to Wall' coverage.
ReplyDeleteEveryone was tripping over themselves to denounce racism. Sure. Me too. I'm against racism.
And every other owner has stated that they will vote Sterling out of the league. And why not? There is no upside to defending a highly unpopular position that will lose.
But even more, if Sterling is running a plantation, then in what sense is every other owner *not* doing the same thing? It is in every owner's interest to make this go away ASAP.
Not to mention that if this goes on for more than a couple of days, the mandatory 'other side' will have to be found. The facts of this can only support a couple of days of outrage. Then at least a little nuance regarding race in the US will trickle out. That would be inconvenient.

From Delewareonline, another pontificator columnist, Ruth Marcus, tut tut tutting about what Sterling was doing all along. One observation jumped out:
ReplyDelete"""""Stiviano, striking in a Cosmo girl way, with a Mexican/African-American background that makes Sterling’s reported aversion to having her associate with – or, more precisely, appear on social media to associate with – African-Americans all the more bizarre"""""""
STRIKING IN A COSMO GIRL WAY? WHAT?
Cosmo = fashion glamor models like Kate Moss, even Naomi Campbell.
THIS Stiviano is on the level of Kate Moss??????
Brilliant insight, Steve, particularly as this has been a season of the literati rethinking the Great American Novel (GAN). In his big new book on the GAN, Lawrence Buell mentions Wolfe and BOTV, only to dismiss them. More's the pity.
