"Racial differences in narcissistic tendencies"

From the Journal of Research in Personality:
Racial differences in narcissistic tendencies
Virgil Zeigler-Hill
Marion T. Wallace
Black individuals have been found to report the highest levels of self-esteem of any racial group in the United States. The purpose of the present research was to examine whether Black individuals also report higher levels of narcissism than White individuals. Study 1 (N = 367) found that Black individuals reported higher levels of narcissism than White individuals even when controlling for gender, self-esteem level, and socially desirable response tendencies. Study 2 (N = 967) and Study 3 (N = 315) found similar results such that Black individuals reported higher levels of narcissism than White individuals on the narcissism measures that captured less pathological facets of this construct. Study 3 also included indicators of psychological adjustment and found that the pathological aspects of narcissism were more strongly associated with maladjustment for Black individuals than for White individuals. The implications of these results for understanding the Black self-esteem advantage are discussed.

Not an interesting study, as the sample is not representative of the population of interest.

Of course they try to explain the racial differences through environmental variables, ignoring the fact that narcissism is a highly heritable trait.

Now I know the standard line about within-group heritability not being definitive proof of between-group heritability that racial equalitarians hold onto so sternly, but it is still highly suggestive of a possibility of between-group differences, so it is a line of inquiry that should at least be followed up upon instead of ignored.

I presume this is aimed at Obama. Wouldn't a mulatto have slightly lower self-esteem (due to identification issues, blah-blah)? Would this impact on narcissism? Can one directly equate self-esteem = narcissism as if they are one trait?

The people who do these kinds of studies. Are they pariahs in their departments? Or do they twist everything they find to fit the Accepted Narrative?

No editorial comment? That's wise.

Barrack Obama on "The View" says he is only there to serve as "eye candy". This skinny guy with big ears and coarse features thinks he's handsome.

Amazing.

It's only called narcissism because the focus appears to be on personal things such as self-esteen and self-image. Taking a broader view one could say that the type of thinking involved transcends narcissism and is a part of their outlook in general. In other words, many of these types live in a mental fantasyland about most things most of the time. And that's not just a joke.

From the articles "General discussion" segment:
Taken together, these results suggest that the heightened levels of narcissism reported by Black individuals may serve as a self-protective mechanism to buffer them from the deleterious consequences of racism.

If mixed folks had less self esteem, would that make them tragic mulattoes?

Blacks are most confident people. East Asians are least.

"Blacks are most confident people. East Asians are least."

Yet paradoxically, blacks are much less intelligent and successful then most East Asians.

Strange that blacks have such high self-esteem, when they have so little to justify it, especially in terms of the broader accomplishments, or rather lack of them, of their race. I have personally witnessed this with so many blacks. They think so much of themselves and for no apparent reason to justify it.

They're considered more masculine. They got better game with women. They're bigger where it counts. They're better at sports where speed is important.

He's also had a nose job since his youth. Not a bad nose job--fairly natural looking. But definitely sharper at the end and along the edges. He's much more black looking in his pre-celebrity days.

well, to themselves anyway. Most of the above is transitory, and/or, conjecture and/or myth anyway. OK, they play more entertaining basketball. But you'd have to be a woman (of any non-black race) to understand the level of disgustingness that their harrassment can take when they are really, really stupid (an awful lot of them), and are not trying to be charming. It makes you understand why people sometimes questioned if they were human. I feel bad saying this, despite it being true, because there are good black guys--some really nice ones, and some nasty white ones. But there is something gruesome about black sexual harrassment that stands out. I don't know if they're proud of it, but it sure is special.

Also, even the women have unrealistically high self-esteem. So the sports/get women/big, etc., doesn't totally explain it. I honestly don't think all that matters.

This correlates with the data that show a higher incidence of homoeroticism among blacks. 'Cause nothing says 'homo' like narcissism.

Both black males and females have sex at earlier ages than other races and I once read a survey that said they have it more often. Also the vilest looking black women are never lacking a sex partner. More sex equals higher self esteem. Also black men have more interracial sex partners than other races so their disgusting harassment isn't much of an issue to non black women on the whole.

Okay. But unless your a pro athlete making a huge salary or possibly getting a scholarship, does this matter?

Just how many black guys can be pro athletes?

So a crack-ho prostitute giving five dollar blowjobs is a fountain of self-esteem? I read that studies tend to show that more promiscuous girls tended to be lower in self esteem. And isn't the fact that so many black males have inter-racial partners a slap in the face to black women? The fact that so many black males tend to NOT prefer black females seems to me to be an utter repudiation of them.

The same women who are upset about harrassment (or who find themselves in those situations) are not necessarily the same ones in those "relationships" you're talking about. Or maybe not for long. They are not as numerous as some people here seem to think.
Given the IQ differentiation (most couples are within 5 poinkts of each other) there are never going to be vast numbers of committed black/white couples. Generally about 3% of any given population tends to be inclined to interracial relationships. Jane Goodall found about that percentage of female chimps left their own group and lived among stranger groups, usually with disastrous consequences. While I don't normally cite primate research to explain human behavior, that percentage struck a chord some how. I guess it's something wired in some of us to seek the "other." Those whites of both genders most open to interracial relationships are usually those who are around the least number of them on a daily basis, which is interesting. The girls I grew up with in my home town, whatever the level of education, were profoundly wary for the most part *(although many tried to be broad minded), because of things far worse than verbal harrassment. Then there are those women who are into drugs, rap, etc. Or just happen to meet the nicer black men.
My point stands, speaking about areas where blacks are very numerous. It is those areas where white are most wary of them.
As for a large number of sex partners equaling self-esteem--too simplistic and certainly not true of most women. In fact, I'd tend to say the opposite in the case of most women.
And I wouldn't put the "disgustingness" in that snide context you are implying. I am talking about people, myself included, who narrowly escaped rape and murder. The verbal harrassment is the worst I can clearly remember.

Sure it matters, especially in high school, when kids are building self esteem.

"And I wouldn't put the "disgustingness" in that snide context you are implying."

I'm just quoting you. You're talking apples and oranges here. I'm talking just sex, you talking relationships. Wait, I know why that is.

Being good at a game of pick-up basketball and having frequent sex with promiscuous partners may seem like a blast when your 17-23 years old. Still I'd rather have an extra 20-30 points added to my I.Q. instead. We'll see whose further ahead when their 37-43.

An extra 20-30 IQ points might even help one tell the difference between whose and who's, their and they're, and your and you're.
