NYT walks Oberlin story back after falling for KKK hysteria

As I point out in my new Taki's Magazine column, although the American news media went nuts over the purported sighting of a one-man Ku Klux Klan rally at Oberlin, America's most racially hypersensitive college, only two newspapers in the world bothered calling the local cops to see whether the KKK appearance had actually happened.

Today, the NYT's original reporter, Richard Perez-Pena, got replaced on the story with veteran Trip Gabriel, who wrote something of a walkback this evening:
Police Unsure of Klan Garb at Troubled College
By TRIP GABRIEL
Published: March 5, 2013
The police in Oberlin, Ohio, have been unable to confirm a report of a person wearing a white robe and hood that caused Oberlin College to cancel classes on Monday and plunged the campus in to a day of soul-searching.
Shortly after midnight on Monday, a female student reported seeing someone dressed in what looked like Ku Klux Klan regalia walking alone on campus near the Afrikan Heritage House. Campus security officers and the Oberlin Police Department responded, but could not find the person.
Another student later told the police that at about the same time, he spotted a person wrapped in a blanket, raising the possibility that the woman had been mistaken. Lt. Mike McCloskey of the Oberlin police said it was unclear whether the two sightings were of the same person.

GL Piggy is all over the Oberlin story.

Bwahaha, McCarthyism was never this hysterical. And at least there were real communist agents and spies. Someone reports a UHO--unidentified hate object--and the entire campus flips out into the Salem Witch Trial. White Scare is 1000x more out of control than Red Scare in the 50s and Jap Scare during the 40s. Hilarious.

Oh, and let's forget all those Lacrosse rapists at Dukkke. Rotfl.

Btw, I have a better idea for Oberliners to do some 'soul-searching'. How about cut classes for the entire semester. I mean there is so much hidden evil on campus that one day of 'soul-searching' by namby pamby self-aggrandizing and morally narcissistic and exhibitionistic Oberliners isn't enough.

Oberliners are a story of bravery of lunacy, indeed as much as Asian women are a story of bravery of love.

Btw, I thought liberals were known for their skepticism.

On the other hand, let's not be too harsh on these loonies.
After all, it was the entire Bush regime, CIA, and MSM that saw WMD in Iraq when they came upon a few photos of aluminum tubes.
And it was the US government that saw a possible terrorist in every old white lady at the airport.
And we keep seeing nukes in Iran and none in Israel though Israel is the nation with nukes.

It's like in SIXTH SENSE. Ghosts see what they wanna see. So do people. We see KKKasper the unfriendly ghost everywhere.
Splc sense.

Funny how the media sees KKK everywhere but only see 'youths' when black thugs go on the rampage.

Pretty frightening. A false flag provocation used to require an action -- a Reichstag fire, say. Now it doesn't even requires a specific accusation, but just some vague report. "I s-s-saw someone in a K-k-k-klaaannn h-h-h-hoood!" Tears and trembling count more than facts.

And no matter how definitive the retraction, the balance of evil always tilts against the side of the initially accused. It's win-win. No wonder it's happening more and more.

The more important issue is... even if some guy was in a KKK hood, what is the big deal as he didn't do anything? Shouldn't a liberal college tolerate different views and expressions?

Wouldn't someone in a communist suit or Che Guevara t-shirt offend someone who was victimized by communism? Yet, if classes were closed for that reason, it would be called McCarthyism.
To Palestinian Americans, isn't the Israeli Flag a symbol of Zionist imperialism and ethnic cleansing of Palestinians?
To victims of black crime, isn't rap music an expression of black thuggery?
If all such stuff is allowed, why shouldn't KKK expressions be allowed too?
Even if there really was a KKK guy, it seems he didn't do anything illegal but only dressed stupid. Since when is that a crime?

We laugh at this but this is getting crazy.
And remember how Chick Fil A was banned from Chicago because it supports the real meaning of marriage?

Crazy stuff like this is all too common because of organizations like ADL and SPLC and their allies in the media that keep spreading lies... like WMD in Iraq and nukes in Iran and the ghastly lie that the Iranian president said he was gonna wipe Israel off the map.
Unless Jewish stranglehold of media and political morality is broken, this madness will grow worse and worse.
It won't be long before students are arrested just for having a Confederate flag.

Just think...

even in a democracy with free press like the US, educated people see KKK everywhere, think a child can have 'two mommies', and a mountain-sized Negro in jail just wants to hug his little white mouse. (And Obama is the messiah).
In this climate, people can believe anything.
But then, cons are under the delusion that Jews just love them and that hip hop republicans and family values hispanics will come to the rescue of the gop.

If a democracy can produce so much BS, it's hardly surprising that Hitler and Mao got so many people to act nuts.

Steve,

You're wrong on "KKK" sightings being synonymous with UFO sightings.

Just recently, in 2009, the KKK rallied at the University of Mississippi.

Fortunately, the winds of change have reached the Deep South South.

Strange. I thought the Supreme Court decided that Nazi's could march in a Jewish neighborhood. First amendment protected freedom, no matter how abhorrent the ideology. Here they call the police because they thought they saw a KKK marcher. The only reason I could see for the police would be to protect the marcher from an enraged PC crowed.

Some background from the Oberlin Review. Reading between the lines and from other sources:

The "Afrikan Heritage House" is one of the Oberlin dorms. Rather than using the regular dorm name, the activist blacks give it a new name to express a kind of ownership and control. Unfortunately, they can't persuade enough activists to move there so they get stuck with regular Oberlin students. Oberlin isn't going to set aside a whole dorm just for activist blacks and leave rooms empty. They want to run their own dorm, dammit, but Oberlin isn't going to pay for it and give it to them to run (full or empty) as they see fit.

There is squabbling between the various victim groups. Everybody wants a piece of the victim pie ($). Hence the statements at the link above that the oppressed groups need to work together.

The OTHER "oppressed groups" are p!ssed because activist blacks think they should have their own private dorm controlled by activist blacks when there isn't any Asian Solidarity Dorm or Mexican La Raza Dorm.

And the Afrikan Heritage House doesn't want any backsass from white kids, either. Hence the instructions in the linked article to (in effect) "read our minds" and figure out what is going to p!ss us off before you even open your mouth.

Furthermore, the Afrikan Heritage House all but orders the white kids to show up at the solidarity rallies that black students set up because white kids need to atone for their race (i.e. their "ancestors") guilt.

As Steve often repeats, "Who? whom?"

What I can't get is the goofiness of it all. I mean, you have a "sighting" of a person in KKK garb lurking around, and this is a problem that needs attention? What was the scenario that was going through people's heads here? I could understand if it were a rally of some kind with some significant numbers, but one guy just wandering around? What are they so scared of?

No -- the important and urgent story is that terroristic "Patriot" groups are on the rise. I heard it breathlessly reported on NPR, so I know it's true. Why, the reporter even interviewed an unimpeachable source, SPLC Fellow Mark Potok.

For some reason I can't find NPR's excellent story on their site, so here isPolitico on the White Racist Menace.

Dr Harding, a lecturer in criminology and sociology at Middlesex University, said that with litters being bred back to back from the most dangerous dogs, each generation was getting more aggressive.

There is also evidence of animals being injected with steroids to increase aggression and being made to bite into trees and hang in mid-air to strengthen their jaws.

Yes, if police personnel were as tough as they like to think themselves, this is what would happen. But as we all know policeniks are actually moral cowards and pussies. I follow litigation in this area, and in the last 15 yrs. I'm unaware of a single instance in which any police agency or municipality has gone to trial to defend any soc-called "civil rights" action by simply saying, "we did the right thing."

They are scared of lack of power and lower social status. That the totality of it, and the rest is theatre.

White liberal males ought to belong to the CuCuckold Clan.

White liberals get a thrill out of being demasculinized. It's like Chris Matthew's leg turning into a giant clitoris whenever he listens to Obama.
It's Bill Maher describing 2012 election as white guy finding out his wife has screwed a black guy.
It's Lena Dunham saying voting for Obama is like losing one's virginity. There were other celebs who said the same thing.
The sexual hysteria of jungle fever politics.

I knew this was the liberal Zionist plan all along. There is a sexual component to elevating Obama to the top position. As the product of a black man doing a white woman, he symbolizes not only the political but sexual capitulation of white gentile America to a black guy controlled by Jews. Also, since Obama has that gayish style and smile, it's also white America bending over to gay America.

Shame that so many white people let this happen. That this happened shows that there was always something defective and vulnerable about the Anglo-American system of values and thoughts. And clever people studied it and learned to manipulate it.
And so many white people are celebrating their own racial defeat as a kind of great moral victory because they handed power to a bunch of Zionist globalists, glib mulattos, and fancy gays.

And the GOP message? We must learn to be more like the liberals.

Kind of reminds of how villagers in backward European regions would whip themselves into a frenzy over alleged sightings of the Virgin Mary.
Usually young women that saw "the vision" then as well.
Maybe Oberlin could profit by setting up some kind of Pilgrimage trail to where "the vision of the Klansman" took place.

Steve, your "its the Jews" commenters are the #1 reason you're not writing for the LA or NYT. Period.

Because they're looking for UFOs. Heck the Lena Dunham/Sarah Silverman thing for Obama is bad for Jews, being a Jew in South Africa today is pretty bad. And the idea that somehow "mind rays" can control ordinary people pencils in comic book style telepathy for a group of people who have historically made poor choices (lack of arms, lack of mobility) and assumes sheep-like attitudes among ordinary White people.

The Salem Witch trials were totally a Puritan phenomena. Which means, basically a Nordic, Danelaw type of communal behavior familiar to any reader of Ibsen. Fischer points out in Albion's Seed that not a single Witch was tried in the Virginia colonies, the aristos were busy using divination themselves to figure out their future, and the Scots-Irish "Borderers" practiced cruel folk magic indeed.

The Witch trials only ended (abruptly) when the accused included the wife of the Governor.

By contrast, the Appalachian people got power/status by money, patronage, and pure power. The Virginians the same, only with the added demand of noble family lineage. The idea of status through social conformity and demanding "moral" behavior from people prone to drinking themselves to death, and fighting at the drop of a hat, would have been laughable.

The downside of Portland, of New England, of Washington State, of all those nice Midwestern, Pacific Ocean, and New England places with low crime, violence, and high amounts of dutifulness ... is this stuff. Witch trials seeking those who are not in social conformity and unpopular.

The culture war was NOT won by Jews, who favored upward mobility and a more Appalachian approach to culture (low levels of conformity to open up to outsiders). It was won by the extremely cohesive Puritans and their social descendants (Sarah Silverman is one after her own Witch trial, her "edginess" is now confined solely to criticizing Christians not Blacks or Asians).

That cohesiveness has power in times of deep technological and thus social change, but it has a price. Moral hysterias.

I live near Oberlin and my (multiracial) family and I enjoy visiting the campus for its musical events. Oberlin has a world-class conservatory and generously opens many of its performances to the public. Oberlin's a great little town and fun to just walk or bike around in, especially during the summer.

Oberlin's response to these "acts" was unsurprising but it still made me cringe. I hope it's a simple case of ivory-tower gullibility and not a conscious effort by the administration to play straight man to these very hoaxy-sounding incidents. (Insert joke about a straight man at Oberlin here.)

Can't we go back to the good old days when hate speech hoaxes were confined to the lower-tier state universities?

The fact that you bring up the Salem Witch trials betrays your true ideology. This event happened over 320 years ago and only involved the killing of about 20 people. It should be a detail of history that is rarely remembered. But certain people of certain persuasions keep it in open memory to use as a hammer to continually pound guilt into a compliant Euro population. Never mind that about 500 people are still killed annually in India over witchcraft. That wouldn't fit the narrative.

Witch trials seeking those who are not in social conformity and unpopular.

What do you call the Reign of Terror and the Drownings at Nantes? It is strange how these same people who beat us over the head with the Salem Witch Trials never seem to discuss these events which involved tens of thousands of murdered victims.

Those atrocities BTW were done by people ideologically similar to you, and I would be more afraid of a repeat of those events than I would any witch trial.

The Salem Witch Trials are famous because they happened among highly literate and intellectual people, which troubled themselves and their highly literate and intellectual descendants, such as Nathaniel Hawthorne, who was a direct descendant of judge John Hathorne.

The Salem witch trials represent a good reminder of the frenzies that Puritans and post-Puritans are prone to: Oberlin being a classic post-Puritan institution.

Funny... I thought it was his remark about blacks in New Orleans 'letting the good times roll' that got him into trouble.

Btw, your comment seems to admit that Jews do indeed control the media. After all, if being associated with any criticism of Jewish power/influence effectively blacklists one from working for MSM...

Yeah, yeah, we should all tell ourselves that Muslim influence in America got Obama elected twice, undermined our borders, pushed 'gay marriage', etc.

Weren't the Reign of Terror and Drownings at Nantes also done by highly literate and intellectual people? These guys represented the Enlightenment. Yet I don't see their highly intellectual descendants being troubled too much about it.

The Salem witch trials represent a good reminder of the frenzies that Puritans and post-Puritans are prone to: Oberlin being a classic post-Puritan institution.

And I still think the frenzies of the Puritans pale in comparison. Also, I don't accept that these fools at Oberlin and other places are post-Puritan. I always thought they were cultural marxists. I always thought this theory about the Puritans being the source of all our current ills was some sort of projection.

Being a Jew in the world is a lot better than being an Afrikaner in SA, or a white in America.

The Salem Witch trials were totally a Puritan phenomena.

And scapegoating was a totally Levantine phenomenon. What's your point?

The problem with your explanation is, the current situation suits the Jews' interests far better than it suits the non-existent Puritans'.

Why is "never forget" a cardinal rule to Jews, but verboten in Puritans? Why is "the silent holocaust of assimilation" a watchword for Jews, but a taboo for Puritans?

You're missing the joke. And that joke is that McCarthy wasn't wrong at all about the Communist Problem. His only crime was being right.

And here's the punchline: Hate Crimes Screeds in the state-run press (or is that a press-run state? Potato, potahto), from coast to coast.

We're now seeing the exponential growth of the "progressive" (Red) victory over McCarthyism and throughout the 60s. That's the etiology of Hate Crimes altogether (aka Thought Crimes), let alone hate crime "hoaxes". Hate crimes themselves are a symptom of Marxist heterodoxy: by entertaining the possibility that a Hate Crime can ever be legitimate under the law, you've already given in and lost this war.

Pat Buchanan has this right: by losing the culture war, the country was lost from within. And that's no small thing so far as things like equal rights and double-jeopardy.

Just remember, some are more equal than others. So a white guy attacked by a gang of blacks can never be the victim of racial hate; and just maybe, he had it coming by a giving the poor youths a stare that screamed "intolerance". The only way a white guy can be a victim of a Hate Crime is 1) by being Jewish or 2) by being gay; never, simply, for being white. And if the perps happen to be caught and prosecuted, the crime will become "incomprehensible" if they have the right amount of melanin.

Of course, even if whites were covered (I know, crazy; whites can only be transcendent liberal saviors or hateful hicks Who Deserve What They Get), the idea of Hate Crimes is utterly inimical to a free society.

If true than that is not impressive. Thirty-five thousand over 300 years. That is similar to the death toll of the Inquisition. Meanwhile, the Reign of Terror, 40,000 killed in 9 months, doesn't hardly ever get mentioned. It's all about the who, whom.
