Andrew Breitbart, RIP

I don't actually know much about the late Andrew Breitbart, who dropped dead last night at age 43, but I want to relate something my wife observed when I had cancer at 38. Lots of people would eventually ask her, "So ... Steve smokes, right?" When she said I didn't, the nonsmokers would look worried and unhappy, and the smokers would look relieved.

We like to believe that whenever anybody dies, it's his own fault. That means, that you, personally, not having any major faults, don't ever have to die.

It's like the test pilots at Edwards AFB in The Right Stuff sitting around at a backyard cookout after one of their neighbors died flying some experimental piece of junk.

Husband 1: Poor Mike ...
Husband 2: Yeah, it's kind of surprising he let himself get in that situation.
Wife 2: What situation?
Husband 2: You know, not being able to handle it.
Wife 1: Handle it? The left wing fell off his airplane!
Husband 3: Yeah, but if afterward's he'd vectored the ailerons with a little more reactive thrust.
Husband 1: And updrafted the trailing surfaces.
Husband 2: Of course.
Wives 1, 2, and 3: The wing fell off!
Husbands 1, 2, and 3: He just didn't have the Right Stuff ...

Conversely, this reminds me of my own automatic assumptions about anybody with more energy than myself (i.e., about 75% of humanity):

A. Obviously, he's on cocaine / Adderall / steroids / adrenochrome etc.

B. Obviously, he's bipolar and is this close to snapping into a full-blown manic episode in which he declares himself the Emperor of Antarctica.

Was Breitbart a smoker?

They said that he dropped dead due to "natural causes". What does that mean? Brain aneurysm? Anything that wasn't caused by another person?

Breitbart was interesting in that he was ethnically Irish while being raised Jewish and in Hollywood. He'll always be linked to Matt Drudge in my mind as they are so much alike except Drudge is a bit of a recluse while Breitbart was the guy who hijacked Anthony Weiner's resignation conference.

The Daily Mail has some pictures of three of his four kids and they're adorable.

pilots, especially test pilots, are analyzers. They remain alive by being more analytical than "normal" people. In the example, they are analyzing the problem, with typical Aspy directness. First you remove the emotion then you look at the problem. However much emotion and chaos there is, first you remove the emotion, and then you look at the problem.

I loved Breitbart, feel really down about his death.

Funny, but like you, I wonder about the same things. With Andrew, I often wondered if he was bipolar I!, in virtually a hypomanic state so much energy and so many ideas he had, but that was just guessing.

I heard Hannity on radio this morning say Breitbart knew he had some heart "issue," but beyond that, I haven't heard anything except "died of natural causes."

I imagine the family thought it important to get the "natural causes" thing out there fast because recently he announced he had a video about having something on Obama/Dems which he was going to release at "just the right time" during election season.

That speech was the last thing I saw of him. Breitbart never oversold anything and his scoops always lived up to their promises.

Who will release those videos now?

Breitbart seemed very quintessentially Irish to me in his bearing.

I guess to be a good test pilot, you have to believe that every situation is one you can recover from. You would never climb into some experimental aircraft otherwise. It's a mistaken belief, but a necessary one.

This weird modern view of death is the result of the leftist project of replacing God with social engineering/science/computer code/government/etc. These perpetual adolescents not only think they can stay aged 20 their entire lives, but in perpetuity. I see it all the time. Someone we all know will die who is in their 70s, and all the leftist brats I know will be shocked that someone so young would actually drop dead. If the dearly departed was a right-winger of course, the leftists will all sort of kind of try to blame his death on that. They'll going to live forever. Or at least death will be pushed way back to something like 120, so that those leftists in their 50s can at least go into deeper denial about it all for a while.

As in the case of Karl Rove, who the left branded as some kind of Machiavellian maniac and is anything but, Breitbart was always painted in the leftist mainstream as sleazy and disreputable when he was in fact a normal family guy and likable goofball.

Anyway, ask yourself this - what really changed when ACORN went away? Answer pretty much nothing, that basically sums up Breitbart's real impact on history.

It's more accurate to say that we want to believe those who die are different from us in whatever way caused them to die. So people who are hated by the left, want to believe briebart died because he was supposedly fat. Those who are fat want to believe he was murdered by the left. Those who are both fat and hated by the left, want to believe his alcoholism killed him.

Catperson said...

Anyway, per your article, it is a really pervasive thing to attribute someone else's success to to something other than his own doing as well.

That's why malcolm gladwell's book outliers was such a success. The whole theme was that success is not caused by the individual as much as what's going on around the individual. So Gladwell argues that bill gates was the most successful person ever primarily because he just happened to be one of the first kids to ever have access to a computer. Gladwell even implied when asked about Obama in an interview that he was president because of affirmative action, though gladwell claimed this shows affirmative action works (it gave us the best man for the job).

Of course if success was really as much about luck as people claim, then evolution would never happen because survival of the fittest would really be survival of the luckiest and luck is not genetic.

Anonymous said...

In a similar manner, when someone's teenager goes off the rails with drugs, etc, observers attribute the misfortune to something the kid's parents did wrong--too strict, not strict enough, not enough unconditional love, over-protected, neglected , and so forth (pick your favorite). This allows people to continue believing the pleasant fiction that their kids will never get into trouble, because they were brought up right. If people realized how little control they have over the way their children will turn out they would be afraid to have children at all.

Same with unemployment.

Mention that you're between jobs, and there's a rush of specific questions -- "Did you contact every old classmate?" "Are you sending out 12 resumes a day?" "Do you wake up at 6 a.m. and dress is a suit everyday?"

The questions are about the person refusing to admit how easily her own job and career could come unglued.

That explains a lot about the attitude of so many women toward rape victims. Or the attitudes of people in general towards victims of assault, espcially when the perps are black (as they usually are in an urban area.) They just can't or won't imagine themselves in such a situation where somebody would be viciously attacked by a stranger ready to kill. Can't do it. Of course. What person doesn't want to be intimately assaulted by a germ carrying psychopath who (in all the best serial killer stories) also tortures and/or murders.
So. Must be she/he didn't have the right stuff to keep her out of that situation.Shouldn't have been out at 3:00 am. But she was a nurse coming home from work! But it was not 3:00 am it was 8:00 pm! But it was not a bad neighborhood. It was her neighborhood. but but but. The attitude of some women is shocking. The psychos have the run of the world but anybody with the bad luck to cross their path is guilty and in additions to being murdered, beat up, raped, etc., is also lacking in whatever it is that keeps the lucky oes unassaulted.

Back to Breitbart. Very suspicious death. He was going to talk more about Obama and how he was not "vetted." Very old news for those who think, but news for the majority who don't.

>if success was really as much about luck as people claim, then evolution would never happen because survival of the fittest would really be survival of the luckiest and luck is not genetic<

Nonsense. Evolution is blind; it is not a Hegelian progression. Mutations are arbitrary; environments are arbitrary; the outcomes of reactions to arbitrary environments are thus (in origin) arbitrary. No organism ever decided to grow a new limb. From a certain perspective, the people who are alive today are merely the ones left standing. What gripes my gut is that people attempt to draw morals from that fact, or, if not so crudely quasi-religious, construct just-so stories. While history, pace Homer Simpson, can mean something, the sweep of evolutionary history is "just a bunch of stuff that happened" and is absolutely equivalent to fate or luck.

(Don't bother to mention genetic engineering or "transhumanism." So far, they are farts in a hurricane.)

Evolution is about survival of the fittest only in the aggregate and the long run, and only in the sense that whoever survives and reproduces is axiomatically said to be the fittest. It does not say that always and everywhere "the fittest" survive and that luck plays no part in their survival. Jim may be genetically fitter than Jack in every way possible. This does not mean that he can't be hit by a bolt of lightning, or be on a plane which crashes, or die in any number of ways which are beyond his control.

Indeed. Worrying about the little guy is for losers. That's why rich people are so into championing Blacks, the poor, sick kids, etc.

What's ironic about how regularly leftoids shit on altruism and idealism is, of course, leftoids' perennial claim to altruism and idealism. Eventually one realizes there's nothing ironic about sociopaths, who will do and say anything to get what they want, and generally are stupid enough to believe their own lies.

Huh? You didn't even bother to think about how stupid your comment makes you seem, you just wanted to spew venom. If someone is threatened by something, then the removal of the threat does indeed do that person good.

You apparently can't imagine that someone might protest something not because he perceives it as a personal threat but simply because he thinks it's unjust. AA has never yet affected me and mine personally but I still think it should go. As should you, the sooner the better.

We like to believe that whenever anybody dies, it's their own fault

Thanks for letting people know about this. I am sick of people blaming my friend for divorcing his wife after he caught her cheating. People blame him, if you can fucking believe it. "Wow, he must have really fucked up for her to cheat on him".

It's cognitive dissonance, people don't want to believe that bad things can happen to themselves. Well, wake up you idiots, and take off the fucking rose-colored glasses once in a while!

People can be shitty, even those you are closest to... and life isn't always fair.

That's not a reason to destroy a man, or his memory.

As for Breitbart, let his actions while alive define him. I have no problem with that. However, if he smoked, if I hated his ideas, I still feel bad that he died, even if he could have lived longer through a healthier lifestyle.

"if you're low enough on the food chain that AA is a threat, its removal won't do you any good."

AA policies are now used in every area of the professional workforce, especially with executive hiring. But most of us are sick of the eternal shakedown from the black grievance class regardless AA policies effect on ourselves individually.

Why is it unjust to have laws protecting people from discrimination? I think AA has served a useful function in leveling the playing field. We now have a society where blacks with an IQ of 100 enjoy the same wages as whites with an IQ of 100 (see the charles murray's the bell curve). Take away AA and blacks would make much less than whites with identical IQ and that would not be just.

As another commenter pointed out, Tolstoy had a similar thoughts:

Ivan Ilych saw that he was dying, and he was in continual despair.

In the depth of his heart he knew he was dying, but not only was he not accustomed to the thought, he simply did not and could not grasp it.

The syllogism he had learnt from Kiesewetter's Logic: "Caius is a man, men are mortal, therefore Caius is mortal," had always seemed to him correct as applied to Caius, but certainly not as applied to himself. That Caius — man in the abstract — was mortal, was perfectly correct, but he was not Caius, not an abstract man, but a creature quite, quite separate from all others. He had been little Vanya, with a mamma and a papa, with Mitya and Volodya, with the toys, a coachman and a nurse, afterwards with Katenka and will all the joys, griefs, and delights of childhood, boyhood, and youth. What did Caius know of the smell of that striped leather ball Vanya had been so fond of? Had Caius kissed his mother's hand like that, and did the silk of her dress rustle so for Caius? Had he rioted like that at school when the pastry was bad? Had Caius been in love like that? Could Caius preside at a session as he did? "Caius really was mortal, and it was right for him to die; but for me, little Vanya, Ivan Ilych, with all my thoughts and emotions, it's altogether a different matter. It cannot be that I ought to die. That would be too terrible."

Such was his feeling.

"If I had to die like Caius I would have known it was so. An inner voice would have told me so, but there was nothing of the sort in me and I and all my friends felt that our case was quite different from that of Caius. and now here it is!" he said to himself. "It can't be. It's impossible! But here it is. How is this? How is one to understand it?"

In your several years of commenting on this site your must at some stage have made a worthwhile and intelligent remark. I'm damned if I can remember it though.

I remember, it was about architecture. It was really clever!

Who said it was? I didn't.

Now that you mention it, though, laws protecting people from discrimination aren't necessarily just. I'll leave you to tease out what I mean by that.

"I think AA has served a useful function in leveling the playing field."

Of course you do. But that's not really what AA has done.

Eh well since AA put a black in White House and women as head in countless countries (Australia etc) and countless female CEOs, it seems that "top of ladder" shouldn't be too crowded.

Larry Summers sure lost his status there.

Hmmm, 'friend'?

It's funny to think of Summers's exit as another casualty of feminism's doomsday imperative but the truth was closer to an "array of forces." If you're a uni president you don't want to goad rival cliques of professors into uniting against you
