Next door neighbors: Oak Park and Austin

The Austin neighborhood on the far west side of Chicago and Oak Park, IL are contiguous neighbors. The border is the yellow stripe in the middle of Austin Boulevard.

According to this NYT map of homicides in Chicago neighborhoods over the last 12 years:
Austin: More than 450 homicides have happened in this neighborhood in Chicago’s West Side, one of the city’s deadliest places

In contrast, over the last dozen years in Oak Park, which has about half as many people as Austin, there have been six murders.

It must be the lack of gun control laws in Chicago.

How about this?

The great migration of white southerners to the North. South will be mostly black and go Democratic. But redneck whites and moderate whites in the north can form a united block and vote out liberals. Thus, North will turn red.

Steve is too polite to mention it, but Oak Park is substantially black (21.7% according to Wikipedia). However, it is not poor. Median household income was $74,614 in 2007. Median family income was $103,840.

Oak Park is notorious (famous in the eyes of the locals) for intense law enforcement. Calling the cops will definitely work in Oak Park. Some number of years I witnessed a car-pedestrian accident. In seconds, several bystanders rushed to help. Seeing that my assistance was not needed, I tried to call 911. In less than 30 seconds, several police cars showed up. Fortunately the pedestrian was not badly hurt.

Oak Park maintains its diversity with somewhat heavy handed racial quotas. See the Wikepedia discussion of the subject.

The NYT map certainly appears to lump in Hispanics with whites.

Did you see this article at WND.com?

CHICAGO MURDERS TOP AFGHANISTAN DEATH TOLL
City where no handgun purchases allowed sets pace for violence

Read more at http://www.wnd.com/2013/01/chicago-murders-top-afghanistan-death-toll/#u8j6RLKkuppUh8u1.99

A WND review of the Chicago Police Department Murder Analysis reports from 2003 to 2011 provides a statistical breakdown of the demographics of both the victims and offenders in the 4,265 murders in Chicago over that time period.

Of the victims of murder in Chicago from 2003 to 2011, an average of 77 percent had a prior arrest history, with a high of 79 percent of the 436 murdered in Chicago in 2010 having arrest histories.

For the same 2003-2011 period, blacks were the victims of 75 percent of 4,265 murders. Blacks also were the offenders in 75 percent of the murders.

According to 2010 U.S. Census information, Chicago has a population of 2,695,598 people. The city is 33 percent black, 32 percent white (not Hispanic), and 30 percent Hispanic or Latino in origin.

For the 2003-2011 period, whites were nearly 6 percent of the victims and accused of carrying out 4 percent of the murders.

For the 2003-2011 period, Hispanics or Latinos were 19 percent of the victims and 20 percent of the offenders.

Between 2003 and 2011, 4,265 people were murdered in the city of Chicago. In 2012 alone, 512 people were murdered in the city.

Operation Enduring Freedom, the name for the war in Afghanistan, which started Oct. 7, 2001, has seen a total of 2,166 killed. The war has been ongoing for 11 years, 3 months and one week.

And heavy old-fashioned policing - none of this anarcho-tyranny that usually comes with diversity. I have the suspicion that this is really the only way diversity and vibrancy can work.

Have some famous architect build lots of stuff in your neighborhood. That might offer some protection.

But then, Detroit had some great buildings too, but none of it was saved.

In the "reading between the lines in the sports page" department, this from the WSJ:

When the world tunes into Oprah Winfrey's interview with Lance Armstrong on Thursday, it'll already be Friday in Australia. If all goes to plan, Roger Federer will be preparing for his third-round match at the Australian Open. Although the world's No. 2-ranked tennis player admitted he hasn't followed competitive cycling closely, he's still interested in hearing what Armstrong has to say. "I'd be intrigued just to hear the interview," Federer said after his first-round win Tuesday. "It's obviously been a difficult situation for the whole of the sport and for [Armstrong] and all the people involved."

Reading this would be very puzzling to anyone not clued into the unspoken story. Why would Federer be so interested in doping in sports?

And who is number 1?

Most big cities have a nice upscale black neighborhood. For example Baldwin Hills seven miles south of Beverly Hills is 99% black, upper middle class in income, and every yard is superbly maintained. Sprinter Alyson Felix's father used to be a minister at one of the big churches there, and she's a good representative of the kind of black bourgeois who don't like either integration or ghetto behavior. When I lived in Houston, it had a nice upscale black neighborhood too.

Baldwin Hills, despite the manicured lawns, still has a high crime rate. Most people would rather get stranded in Lincoln Heights (Hispanic), than Baldwin Hills.

Also, I wonder what the black bourgeois position on affirmative action is? Nevermind...

Baldwin Hills was the setting for a "Laguna Beach"-style show on BET a few years ago.

Come-on Steve! It means that Austin residents just have that much more Lead poisoning than Oak Park residents. I thought everybody knew that Lead Poisoning from pollution was the main driver of violence. Don't you read Bloomberg News?

What's fascinating about the current gun-control brouhaha is the dog that ISN'T barking.

During the Crack Wars, remember how the scapegoat was the concealable "pocket rocket"? The cheap "junk gun" that even BLACK PEOPLE could afford? Must be banned!

This time around, made-for-mugging guns are getting a total free pass as all the hysteria turns to hard-to-conceal "assault rifles."

It seems Disney is presenting an animated white looking girl as its first Latina princess. My guess is that it will be difficult for all these white looking Hispanic "leaders" to criticize Disney on is point.

And those six murders in Oak Park were either a black killing a black or a black killing a whitey. Maybe a rare instance of a whitey killing a whitey but probably not. And as others have said Oak Park does have a significant black population already.

Oak Park... Say, weren't they the only place in Illinois in which the lefties were so full of themselves that actually voted a HANDGUN BAN for their neighbors? Who would want to live in such a place where "Committees For the Defense of the Revolution" would obviously thrive?

Hmmm..., I notice that South Deering, which is mostly Black and Hispanic, seems to have very few homicides on the NYT map. Any thoughts? Wikipedia doesn't have much to say about South Deering, but it doesn't seem to be rich.

The Chicago Police Department has issued an alert in the 2nd District of Wentworth for several armed robberies that have occurred during the month of January.

The offenders, described as six to seven African American females with a light completion between the ages of 16 and 20, enter cabs in the Loop.

Upon arrival to their destinations on the South Side, one of the girl chokes the driver with a rope or cord, while another threatens the cab driver with a knife, demanding cash. Authorities say the group then jumps out of the cab.

South Deering is mostly Lake Calumet and abandoned industrial sites.

Oak Park and Austin seem like Brookline and Roxbury in Boston. One of the worst majority-black neighborhoods in New England located next to one of the wealthier towns in the Commonwealth, where the cops enthusiastically violate the rights of all and sundry in defense of their city.

There is also Ladora Heights, which I only know about because it was mentioned in Reservoir Dogs. So Steve, is it really the "Black Beverly Hills"?

In Detroit, there is an upscale area in the city known as Palmer Woods. The architecture is outstanding and it is home to the upscale black population.

Recently, there has been a kerfuffle about Palmer Woods and the upcoming Detroit mayoral election in November. A white guy who has been involved and successful in both county government and the private sector is likely to throw his hat into the ring. It has been 40 years since Detroit has had a white mayor, and it's been almost that long since there has been a legitimate white candidate.

Recently, the white candidate has moved into Palmer Woods to be eligible for the race, and it has caused a lot of raised eyebrows. Another likely mayoral candidate has stated, then retracted, a comment to the effect that "Palmer Woods is not Detroit".

Says about all you need to know.

"During the Crack Wars, remember how the scapegoat was the concealable "pocket rocket"? The cheap "junk gun" that even BLACK PEOPLE could afford? Must be banned!"

Decades before the "pocket rocket" was called a "Saturday Night Special", cheap enough for a hot-blooded buck to buy on a Saturday night, take to a dance and shoot his romantic rival.

Of course, laws against cheap pistols such as the Saturday Night Special were regarded as racist by the black community. Had to go.

I have to admit the Democrats did their best to disarm black folks with the Black Codes that made gun toting in towns a crime for newly-freed blacks in the south. The Republicans (the party of Lincoln) fought such laws as racist and oppressive and ever since then black folks have been free to shoot the sh!t out of each other.

Interesting gun control connection. Danny Glover agitated for laws in NYC that would require cabbies to take fares into the wilds of Harlem at any hour of the day or night.

It seems the cabbies (the vast majority are colored) were too smart to stop for black thieves heading uptown at night and wind up robbed and dead.

NYC made it a race crime and cabbie murders jumped.

According to accounts on Drudge in the last week, Danny Boy is speechifying at Texas A&M, telling the kids that white folks passed the Second Amendment was passed to keep the black man down.

The man would rather see dead black cabbies and dead black homeowners than permit black folks--whether cabbies or homeowners--use common sense to protect themselves. You really have to wonder about the Black Elite.

I live on the near north side of Chicago and took the Green Line out to Oak Park today. It is very prosperous and well-maintained but more SWPL than old money/preppy like Winnetka. I walked along Lake Street through Oak Park to Austin where Chicago starts. It is quite remarkable how abrupt the change is and how the blacks for the most part stay out of Oak Park. I assume they must get hassled by the Oak Park police but saw no evidence of this. I walked north on Austin to Chicago Avenue. There were some black males standing about who looked me over but didn't make any moves towards me. I decided to take the Chicago Avenue bus back downtown and was able to see the Austin neighborhood. Very, very depressed and entirely poor black. There are formerly nice buildings which could be fixed up to be like Oak Park but I don't see any evidence of that happening unlike many other gentrifying areas of Chicago. We eventually hit Ukrainian Village which is fairly nice and getting to be more hipsterish along with the rest of West Town.

"You really have to wonder about the black elite".

True enough. Danny Glover is a particularly egregious example but pretty much all of them suffer from a lack of realism or ability to address the failures and pathologies in their own community. Its easier to just blame whites. Even though I doubt 3% of the cab drivers in most large U.S. cities are white.
