The Crisis Continues

The Houston Chronicle updates us on the latest development in the national uproar over some useful advice that gold-digging adventuress Julie Chen received 18 years ago that set her on the road to marrying Les Moonves, CEO of CBS:
TV station apologizes to Julie Chen for telling her to fix ‘Asian eyes’

“Big Brother” host Julie Chen revealed this week on CBS’ “The Talk” that she underwent double-eyelid surgery to make her eyes look “less Asian,” at the behest of her former TV station, NBC affiliate WDTN in Dayton, Ohio.
Chen said an ex-boss told her she’d never get on the anchor desk looking that Chinese, that her eyes were “small” and “unexpressive.” An agent later told her the same thing, so she says she felt it necessary to oblige and surgically alter her face, to Westernize her look.
After all the media attention and public outcry, that Ohio station issued an apology, blaming old management. Better late than never.
“We are sorry to hear about what happened to CBS’ Julie Chen in 1995 when she was a reporter at WDTN-TV,” Joe Abouzeid, the station’s president and general manager, said in a prepared statement. “The station was under different management and ownership during that time. At WDTN and WBDT, we don’t tolerate racism or discrimination of any kind.”

Frankly, from the pictures it would seem she's had more done than just her eyes.

What are the rates for this surgery in Korea, Japan and the rest of Asia?

There must be a whole lot of white bosses over there or something.

Funny how the whole "evil white racism" claim of hers falls apart with just one look at the picture. She simply wasn't attractive before she got work done.

I was thinking that same thing. So Julie decided for herself her nose was a little too Asian, but we won't mention that.

If you really want to see the king of imagined hurts, outrage, and indignation, google Debito Arudou. Debito (nee David Aldwinckle) is a white American guy who is a naturalized citizen of Japan now and is dedicated to giving foreigners in Japan a bad name by raising a stink over the most trivial of slights.

That's as bad as the supplicating Paula Deen did.

I'm having a hard time believing her story.

Why didn't her boss just invent some excuse for not giving her the job that wasn't based on race/looks? That would have been the low-risk route.

It's not like 1995 is so very long ago, the basic structure of the sex/race discrimination industry was already well established.

The link below has multiple before and after pictures. My question is this. How can she look like a different person in each picture, when all Asians look alike?

Interesting that the station just laid down and begged for mercy.

We've come to that?

Things we apparently don't know:

TV anchor positions discriminate against the less attractive.

PhD programs discriminate against the less intelligent.

Sports discriminate against the less athletic.

Etc.

Just before the lights go out, we will be randomly assigning the wealth of our society to random people on the planet.

Hmmm, 1.3Bn Chinese people want to be an anchor ...

Big business for plastic surgeons.

Yeah, I'm ready to believe she made the whole thing up. There's a certain amount of shame involved in getting plastic surgery, as it smacks of vanity and superficiality, so people like to blame health issues, racism, or the cruelty of strangers.

The funny thing is, if her boss really said what she claims, he did her a big favor. Obviously, she's happy she advanced in her career, but she still wants to blame the guy who gave her good advice. In my career, all the constructive criticism I've received has been from people who weren't too worried about hurting my feelings. They gave me the unvarnished truth and I'm grateful to them.

I don't know how we get anything done in this country with all the bitching and moaning going on. I truly believe we're doomed.

She's not necessarily a gold digger. She married a man in his mid-50s when she was in her mid-30s, and they've now been married almost a decade. Maybe she's in it solely for the money, but it's entirely plausible that's not the case.

Chicks dig powerful men, and Moonves is likely a charismatic alpha male, like most CEOs. And even in his sixties, he's better looking than many 40 somethings. So there's plenty of other reasons for her to be into him.

Furthermore, even if a woman is initially attracted by a man's money, that doesn't preclude a real relationship between them. I only use the term gold digger for a woman who either enters a relationship with the sole objective of extracting money, or who would break off a relationship if it weren't for the money.

Attractive white women just have to exist for Asian women to feel harrassed. And of the four half-Asian woman I know, every one has confided a preference to be full white and expresses contempt for Asian men. Pretty devastating.

So that station manager who gave Linda Ellerbee beauty advice back in the 70's should be exhumed for ritual disembowelment?

What about the one who told Christine Craft she wasn't beautiful enough?

Chen is speaking power to truth.

Steve,

Why are you ignoring the alleged racism of the white sororities at the University of Alabama. If you want to really look at problems for people who do not really have problems, the African-American daughter and grand daughter of powerful politicians not being invited to join an all white sorority is probably near the top.

Maybe someone will ask if the black sororities at the University of Alabama have any white members but that seems beyond the grasp of the media. But I guess focusing on what Jesse Jackson has to say about forcing the white sororities to admit blacks is more important.

"Interesting that the station just laid down and begged for mercy."

It seems more like a prudent, preemptive PR-move on their part-- "different management; we've done nothing wrong (phew!)"

When will Chinese companies apologize for favoring western eyes over Asian eyes?

When will Japanese companies apologize for promoting the ideal of big eyes through anime?

When will Indian companies apologize for favoring light skin over dark skin?

And what about the fact that almost all successful black women have straightened brillo pad hair that nappy hair?

"Hugh said...

I agree. I don't believe her. I can't imagine a boss in 1995 saying that. By that time, the grievance industry was well established, and anybody at a TV station would have known what he could and could not say.

It appears that in the formation of social taboos, specifics are far more important than generalities.

For example, we say 'racism' is the great taboo in America, but not really.
As a generality, it doesn't hold much sway.
It's the specifics that count.
For example, we can crack jokes about Indians, say nasty things about Muslims, stir up paranoia about Russians, promote yellow peril fears, make fun of squat Mexicans, and dehumanize Palestinians. All such 'racisms' are either tolerated or even encouraged.

But insensitivity about Jews and blacks can get you in big, big, big trouble. MLK must be worshiped and we must pretend Michelle Obama and the Williams sisters are beautiful/intelligent women. Gag.

This news person who told Chen to get eye surgery... would he/she have even dared think to suggest to a Jew to get a nose job or to a Negro to get lighter skin?

While news media have generally favored lighter skinned negroes and Jews without very Jewishy features, I don't think a media operative--esp if a white gentile--would have dared to blatantly tell a Jew or Negro to alter his/her appearance.
That would have been a scandal right there on the spot.
But with Chen, it did happen and it took many years for it to become an issue.

Anyway, this highlights the inherent biases in the news, media, and hollywood(all controlled by liberals)that pretend to be so 'inclusive' and diversity-oriented.

Also, Chen, instead of raising hell with Chinatzpah, assented like a dog to fit in. A drone.

The debacle in Dayton would've worked out differently if the news director had eyes for Chen rather than surgical advise. Alas, dating in Dayton was not to be. Sadly for Chen she was reduced to dating the only one who had eyes for her--the head of the eyeball network CBS. One wonders if Chen is seeing clearly.

Joe Abouzeid, the station’s president and general manager

Well, judging from the pictures, he's got a ton of Southeastern Mediterranean blood in him.

Sephardic Jew?

Levantine Christian?

Arab Muslim?

I'm guessing Levantine Christian, like the famous heart surgeon at Baylor.

Part of the great Lebanese Diaspora which arose about a century ago, during the fall of the Ottoman Empire?

Case in point of the power of taboos being specific than general.

Criticism would have been far more muted had she been Jewish, black, or lesbian.

But many feel it's ok to rip into hindus.
Libs are being disingenuous about the 'racism' on this issue since Hollywood has routinely mocked certain minority groups while coddling others.

Howard Stern in PRIVATE PARTS denounced Filipinos but he kept his million dollar gig.
Imus made one harmless remark about nappy headed hos and he was tarred and feathered and driven out of town.

Some 'racisms' are more equal than others.

Cry me a river.

Most men, whether White, Asian, or other, consider East Asian women (Japanese, Chinese, Korean) to be the hottest Asian women, followed by Southeast Asian women (Malaysian, Vietnamese, Cambodian, Thai).

East Asian women have petite figures, pale white skin, straight long black hair and "exotic" slinty eyes.

Nobody is breaking down doors to go after South Asian women (Indian and Bangladeshi), who are mostly yellow-brown with Caucasoid features, nor after Arab women (North Africa, Middle East, West Asia), who are both Caucasoid and Muslim.

"At WDTN and WBDT, we don’t tolerate racism or discrimination of any kind."
----
When someone says this, they sound stupid to me. No discrimination of any kind, really? When Susie gets asked to the prom by Bob and Joe, she has to discriminate to decide whom to go with. When you go to the supermarket and buy the apple that's not bruised, you're discriminating. People like this have destroyed the usefulness of this word... apparently it always means 'unfair' discrimination now.

Looking at the photos I would suggest that her nose and other parts of her face were done as well.

She certainly looks much more attractive with her remodeled look, but she can afford to have the surgery to 'go back' if being gorgeous upsets her so much.

Amidst the wailing and gnashing of teeth over Asian women straightening their eyes & black women straightening their hair, I see virtually no angst over white women (and body-builders)giving themselves cancer to darken/tan their skin. And, what about white women feeling compelled to purchase fat lips? High time to establish some victim equality in the angst zone. Maybe then we will separate the much-ado-about-nothing from the truly tragic. As for Chen's situation...In a tv anchor job, appearance matters. In a non-Asian world and lacking exposure, many viewers may find it harder to relate to the emotional expressions of an Asian. Or someone with a heavy BTW, what's up with Chen's nose? Just askin'.
