A reader writes to tell me that he can't read my blog using MS Internet Explorer 7. He says all I have to do is remove my Sitemeter code. But I've been using Sitemeter for many years, so I'm not going to do that.
Of course, this post is most relevant to you if you use MS IE 7. But if you do, then you probably can't read this, so it all seems pretty futile.
Well, whatever it is, it's not my fault, so I'm just going to procrastinate and hope it goes away by itself.
UPDATE: It seems to have gone away by itself. Chalk up another triumph for procrastination!

Mark Richardson of OzConservative was just saying that his weblog wasn't being read on Internet Explorer - so its probably a Microsoft thing.
To IE users:
In IE go to the
Tools Menu
Internet Options
Security tab
Highlight Restricted sites
Click the Sites button
Add to the sites list *.sitemeter.com
Is this a recent development or something, one that occurred after a Microsoft update? I've been reading this site (as well as Hibernia Girl, Half Sigma, and others, all with sitemeter) for some time in my IE 7 based RSS reader without any problems. Now all my favorite sites are getting these silly error messages in my reader.
If this is an internet wide problem, I'm sure SiteMeter will have a fix for the problem soon.
TO ck:
What if it won't let you add sites because the "custom" button won't highlight?
Hey, CK, good fix. Thanks.
Steve, this is definitely Sitemeter's issue, and you should remove the javascript, at least temporarily.
Sitemeter should have this fixed, but it's not even mentioned on their site yet, and that's not a good sign.
Besides, if everyone takes CK's advice, you won't be getting useful data from sitemeter anymore.

For me, the problem started yesterday, including with other sites that use sitemeter. ck's fix didn't work for me (in IE 6). Good to have a second browser on the desktop, and let's just hope this gets fixed soon.

Internet Explorer. Part of the unlettered continuous-tinkerers' paradise, Microsoft!
"I hate Microsoft. They are the tool of the devil."
Fixed that for ya.
Was it Evil Neocon - the Apple-basher - who was having the trouble, Steve? (Of course, he claims to own three Apples.)
BWA-HA-HA-HA
Well, it appears to have been fixed. You weren't the only one experiencing a problem.
I had the same problem. I thought it was some kind of censure. Chinese, maybe. My paranoia. Thanks ck
Steve, Tell them they can download a fix for the problem from mozilla.com by downloading and installing FireFox.
Why does anybody still use IE. With Firefox and Opera around it just doesn't make sense to support Microsoft in the Browser market as well.
This is a widely reported bug. Steve is right to assume it will take care of itself.

fired up IE7 to see, and it's working fine for me.
I'm not so sure this is only sitemeter's problem. Something seems to be wrong with blogger lately. Posting causes errors at times, and it seems buggy overall.
I'd suggest running your blog on a WordPress content management system with your isteve domain and getting your stats through your host. I'm partial to WordPress because it's geared toward blogging more than anything else, and there's a huge amount of free support available from the user community.
I use Dreamhost, and they've been great. They're located in Southern California, too. I run a few domains there for my personal blog as well as commercial endeavors, and haven't had any serious problems yet.
Of course, you might not want to deal with the associated hassle, but you could always recruit some young fan to do it for you.
Just a suggestion.
I've been reading this site with MS IE7 and I've never had any problem. Even now, I'm not getting any error messages. But then, I'm accessing the site from Istanbul, maybe that has to do with it.
(On the other hand, we here can't download YouTube since it's been officially blocked by a court order -- due to some video posted about Ataturk which allegedly contains insults. Nice intelligence op, isn't it: you notice that people -- journalists -- can easily post videos about your Machiavellian behind-the-scenes dealings anonymously, so you post a video containing "insults" to some holy leader of yours posing as a "Greek nationalist," then you block the site. Problem solved.)
No nick this time
Tech article aggregator http://techmeme.com has several articles that address this very issue on its front page at the top.
Blogspot blogs had this problem recently for some reason.
Yet another reason to switch to Firefox: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/
Glad my fix helped some of you access sites that were having a sitemeter issue yesterday.
If, as a user, you wish to continue to give away valuable information about your browsing habits, and since it appears sitemeter has corrected whatever the issue was, it is easy to re-open the restricted sites list and remove *.sitemeter.com from the list.

Thank you, nerds, for the suggestions to switch to Firefox, we have never heard some aspie sperg out about web browser evangelism before. You are truly a credit to your nerd race.
Bill: Something seems to be wrong with blogger lately. Posting causes errors at times, and it seems buggy overall.
Something is ALWAYS wrong with Blogger.
I've been on a one-man crusade to get Steve to ditch this piece of crap format for months now.
It's hard to imagine that someone could intentionally design a product that would be worse than this blogger/blogsite BS.
PS: Is there any possibility that we could get a real time bulletin board?
Something like what Spengler has over at atimes.net?
Posting a comment and then waiting 12 or 24 or 36 hours to see what happens is driving me crazy, and eventually will probably drive me away from the board altogether.
From time to time, there are some people with really interesting insights on this board, but trying to make contact with them [much less carry on a conversation with them] via lag times of one or two days [if not more] is nigh unto impossible.
I'm not so sure this is only sitemeter's problem.
Be sure. They've acknowledged as much.
BTW, I run all my blogs and forums on DH and second the recommendation.
CK, I've actually left sitemeter restricted. Fight the power! One to you.
