NYT lauds GOP for giving amnesty, blasts GOP for not giving vote

The GOP House leadership can congratulate itself for getting on the good side of the New York Times editorial board for the first time in years:
Fixing Immigration, in Principle
By THE EDITORIAL BOARD,  JAN. 30, 2014

What you need to know now that House Republican leaders have unveiled a list of “principles” that have raised hopes for a breakthrough on immigration reform this year:
Principles are no substitute for actual legislation, and we’re still a great distance from a deal. Repairing a system so huge and so broken is a big undertaking for any Congress, much less this dismally dysfunctional one. The Republicans’ grab bag of ideas still leaves Democrats nothing to negotiate with.
That said, the list’s release Thursday, after years of stalemate, leaves us with a palmful of blessings to count.
LEGALIZATION! The question about the nation’s 11 million unauthorized immigrants has always been this: Are they out or in? Criminals or potential Americans? The new principles say that these immigrants must “get right with the law.” This is a big change from “get out,” the central immigration position of the Republicans’ 2012 presidential nominee, Mitt Romney, who embraced the “self-deportation” mantra of his adviser Kris Kobach, author of Arizona’s brutal immigration law.

So, the GOP's new principles of amnesty without citizenship are making the GOP more popular with the New York Times! Whoo-hoo!

Except, on the same page, the New York Times doesn't even wait one day to spring the other side of the trap: amnesty without citizenship will just be a perpetual sore spot for the NYT-led media to use to stir up anti-GOP racialized resentments:

Op-Ed Contributor: Second-Class Noncitizens
By MAE M. NGAI, JAN. 30, 2014
Those who take this ultraconservative position (including many aligned with the Tea Party) are blind to the lessons of history. The United States has a long track record not only of legalizing illegal immigrants, by legislative or administrative action, but also of pairing legalization with a grant of permanent residency, the prerequisite for naturalization.
... The alternative now envisioned by some House members — legal status without access to citizenship — would effectively create a new stratum of society, a permanent second class of Americans.
We have been down that road before, with grim results. The Asiatic exclusion laws, in force from the 1880s to the World War II era, were openly racist attempts to protect America from the “yellow peril” and “unassimilables.” These laws not only prohibited most prospective immigrants from China and other Asian countries from entering; they also excluded all Asians from naturalized citizenship, including merchants and professionals who were otherwise legal residents. In most Western states exclusion from citizenship also meant exclusion from owning agricultural property and from a range of occupations, from teaching to commercial fishing.
... In 2012 Congress expressed “regret” over the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882.
Today’s political opposition to a path to citizenship is out of sync with democratic principles, historical practice and the vast majority of public opinion.
It is punitive in spirit. It also suggests an unease with the prospect of more Latino voters. Republicans seem divided between those who recognize the need to appeal to the growing Latino electorate and those who would rather shut out prospective Latino voters than try to win their support.
Citizenship is precious. That is precisely why it shouldn’t be held hostage to narrow, defeatist and racially discriminatory partisan interests.

Gee, GOP, it sort of sounds like this whole "immigration reform" thingie is a Damned If You Do, Damned If You Don't trap carefully constructed by your political enemies.

When are the Republicans going to learn they are politically at war? The left isn't interested in bipartisan compromise or peaceful coexistence with conservatives. The left wants nothing less than the GOP's unconditional surrender. They don't want fifty percent. They want it all.

I have no regret over the Chinese Exclusion Act. The Chinese Foriegners in America are all on board with China's National Origns Immigration Policy and demand that White Americans committ demographic suicide.

Everyone should go read Socialist Samuel Gompers' testimony in favor of the Chinese Exclusion Act.

For those of you who don't know, the Chinese Exclusion Act was passed due to the high level agitation in its favor on the part of Samuel Gompers and an Irish immigrant named Dennis Kearney.

And as the Chinese Fifth Column in America installs itself in powerfull Gate Keeper positions in "American" Society..we all know what race will be excluded...just drive down 25A right before Renaissance Technology..look to the right going east:Stony Brook University, a Colony of China. The Blue Collar White American construction workers back in 1960 didn't realize that the were building a Chinese Fifth Column Operation Center. All of these construction workers were WWW2 and Korean War Vets. Their Tax $$$ paid for the construction of Stony Brook.

Gotta get this in:right across the Street from Renaissance Technlogy:the Tea Party agitates for War with Iran...as the Chinese "Americans" who own Stony Brook University ethusiastically vote for the Tea Party's rapid race-replacement every Nov 4 at election time. Didn't realize the extent to which the frontal lobes of the Tea Partiers have shrunk since the birth of the Tea Party six years ago.

Where the hell does this number of '11 million undocumented' come from?
Anyone ever see a hint of a reliable source for this figure?
By this point, 20-30 million seems more in touch with reality, with only ~ 40% indicating that US citizenship is more preferable than simply being allowed to stay here and continue to earn untaxable income, sending remittances out of the country.
In the last ~ 10 years, most of NYC has become unrecognizable: some neighborhoods are over ~ 75% foreign-born non-documented.
And this pattern isn't being duplicated all over the US?

so those GOP politicians are just stupid, huh?

No chance they know exactly what they are doing?

Maybe they just don't care about the republican party and instead just mainly care about themselves? Just like everyone else on this planet.

Maybe they realize that the corporations can and will target them for being against immigration and that this corporate money can be used against them in the next election? Maybe they would rather stay in office so they support immigration?

Maybe they know that if they play along and support immigration they have a good chance of getting the corporations to pay them for speaking and appearance fees if they do get voted out?

Here is what I think: the politicians in washington know what they are doing, and they do the things they do because it helps them.

Just like you and I do the things we do because it helps us.

GOP and Dem politicians alike put themselves and their own interests ahead of loyalty to their political party.

The GOP pols don't really care if the GOP cannot win elections years or decades down the road when immigrant children get the vote. They care about the next election and what the corporate CEOs think of them. Because those corporate CEOs will pay former congressmen a lot of money...if those congressmen are respected and admired by the CEOs.

That is insanely optimistic.

The GOP has a job to do and it's doing it.

Unfortunately that job isn't "do things our constituents want" or "do things that would be good for our constituents". It's "provide a safety valve so our constituents use their energy uselessly instead of doing something destructive (and get personally rewarded in the process)". If you think the current Mandarin set is pretty good at their jobs you might even think this is a noble role.

Such as? What were the "grim results" of preventing millions of Asians from inviting themselves to America between 1880-1950? Not very many Chinese restaurants? What were the "grim results"? America went from a backwater to global super-power during this time.

"The Asiatic exclusion acts were openly racist.."

Depends on how you define racism. I believe racial preferences and prejudices are not the same thing. I also believe that immigration is a privilege and not a right. Withholding privileges from somebody is not the same as denying them their rights. I don't think there is a Chinese right to immigrate to America or Canada anymore then they have the right to invite themselves to Mexico, Peru or Argentina. If simply not letting Chinese into your country is "racism" then the word is devalued and meaningless. I would think what Japan did to China and the Chinese in the 1930's and 40's was a million times worse then any exclusion act. I didn't think making Chinese live in their own country of China was so devastating an experience for them!

It's Whites' turn in the barrel, that's all. Discrimination against various races is a constant of U.S. history. Even during the false brief dawn of Reconstruction the indigenous population was being harried by federal troops. The U.S. government is congenitally unable to treat its citizens as equals among themselves.

The astonishing thing is that Whites are so tranquil about their supplanting; that is so NOT their history.

Lest we forget, it was the misbegotten Reagan Amnesty of 1986 which really was the pivotal link in the story of the mass thirdworldization of America. More so, in fact, than the 1965 Immigration Act, since the despicable Reagan decision legitimized the illegitimate - and encouraged a ceaseless tide to come in the hope of conning their way in.

So, the notion that somehow the GOP are anti-immigration is just laughable - also consider dummkopf Bushy II's oft-repeated attempts to foist uncontrolled immigration on the USA.
I'm afraid that George Galloway MP's neat and lyrical little phrase "two cheeks of the same ass" more or less sums up the duopoly's attitude toward immigration.
Perhaps it's time for a US Independence Party, modelled ironically enough on the UK's same. UKIP are doing swimmingly - the UK political class have been reduced to qyuivering, jibbering, jelly-like wrecks at the thought of Mr. Farage's big stick.

The fact is that humans will go along with whatever propaganda/ideology their leaders push on them. That is a major evolved trait of homo sapiens.

150 years ago, the societal leaders pushed manifest destiny of the white race to conquer unsettled lands. This allowed those at the top to expand their business empires and thereby expand their fat wallets.

Nowadays, there are no unsettled lands (well, you have (or rather, had, in certain cases) some nations such as afghanistan, iraq and iran and N Korea that are relatively unplundered (hence the recent (and future) wars))).

Nowadays, profit expansion comes in different areas. For example, lowering or restricting the rise of waqes in america. Hence mass immigration.

Also, fracturing the unity of the electorate in order to weaken the control of the electorate over the gov't. Hence mass immigration again.

Also, political correctness and affirmative action help get all those immigrants working and earning.

But those at the top have to manufacture consent for mass immigration and affirmative action before you can make them work for fat wallets. America is after all a democracy, at least theoretically....

That is where the propaganda comes into play. That is where white race guilt comes into play. So now young and malleable white kids are taught that in order to prove they are not racist and evil, they must bend over backwards to accommodate nonwhites, whereas 150 years ago they were taught about how it is manifest destiny that whites conquer unsettled lands.

You shape and mold young minds in order to get higher profits in the end. It's the Long Game.

"When are the Republicans going to learn they are politically at war?"

This is just like at the beginning of WWII when the USN would send out submarines under the command of skippers whose formative experiences were peacetime.

There, the primary objective is to never risk the ship. So they would come back from patrols, ship intact, but not having scored any kills.

The mindset ran too deep and the Navy eventually had to replace most of them with a newer, less indoctrinated breed that was spoiling for a fight. Some of them did lose their ships, but much more damage was inflicted on the enemy.

The Repubs think they are still in the several decades we've had where the D's & R's were the left/right wing of the governing party. There was entente between the sides, as it was a gravy train for both sides. Nobody was encouraged to rock the boat to much and upset the balance.

However, it is pretty clear now, as Spengler noted, that the D's have dropped the entente and are going for the kill, I think the reelection of Obama showed that he wasn't a fluke, that the tide has turned in the American narrative.

This truly has not sunk in on the Republicans, which is one of the many reasons I've long since given up on them.

Harry Baldwin said...

When are the Republicans going to learn they are politically at war?

If we're at war, the Democrats are the Viet Cong and NVA, while the Republicans are the ARVN (Army of the Republic of Vietnam), conflict-averse and prone to back-shooting their officers (that's us, the voters).

To my surprise Rush Limbaugh has been presenting a correct analysis of this subject to his listeners. It boils down to (1) the Republican pols really hate their base; they are embarrassed by it and want to get rid of it; they want to compete for the Democrats' base; (2) the Republicans are completely bought off by the donor class whose number one issue is cheap labor; (3) the individual Republican pols see their future as lobbyists for or executives at the Fortune 500 corporations that are pushing for amnesty, so they want to curry favor; (4) they see the only problem as how to pull the wool over their stupid base's eyes so they can ram this amnesty plan through; unfortunately the base doesn't seem to be stupid enough.

With the money class being universally committed to this issue, I don't see how ideas of a new, anti-immigration party will ever get off the ground.

"The astonishing thing is that Whites are so tranquil about their supplanting; that is so NOT their history."

That's easy, White people are only being cleansed 1% at a time. The majority at any one moment are unaware - or at least that's how it's been since it started in the West Side Story era. The cleansing part will become impossible to hide - even if they want to hide it by then - as White people become a smaller minority but by then it won't matter.

Part of the reason anti-immigration third parties have an easier time getting started in Europe - not that it has helped much so far - is that in smaller countries it's harder for the media to cover up the gang violence inflicted on white teenagers that drives white people to move away aka "white flight" aka violent ethnic cleansing - but only 1% at a time.

Sounds about right.

With the money class being universally committed to this issue, I don't see how ideas of a new, anti-immigration party will ever get off the ground.

Probably right.

But the real problem is that another party is not going to solve anything. The crux of the issue is that the politicians don't have to do what their voters want them to do, no matter what party they belong to.

There is a fundamental failure of democracy in play here.

We never really had much democracy, and as the USA grows ever larger and ever more "diverse," democracy decreases ever more. The realization of this fact is the first step in the process of fixing the problem.

Do you have a high enough opinion of the NSA to put much stock in that conjecture? It amazes me that people summarily discount this possibility. Imagine you are an NSA functionary. Your job, as your superiors have defined it, is to spy on everyone - literally - everyone. So whom do you focus your attention on? You? Me? Or any number of thousands of other anonymous internet nobodies? Or do you focus your attention on people in positions of power - on people for whom actionable intelligence provides instant return on investment - the ability to mold events, through legislation, court rulings, etc. Not that the NSA themselves necessarily makes these decisions. They are hirelings. But those whom they ultimately work for, whether they know who those people are or not, are interested in outcomes.

That is not to say that Congressman are not also bought. They are. Think of them as if they were spies run by an intelligence agent. The agent uses every psychological trick to get his charge to do his bidding: bribery, blackmail, appeals to vanity. Whatever works.

You can tell how they would act by looking at how hard it is to get a foreign bride into the country, especially from white countries like Russia and Ukraine. There IS a type of immigration they don't like: white middle-class American men finding wives overseas and bringing them here to be mothers and housewives. They have no trouble at all maintaining complex and expensive restrictions on that particular kind of immigration. You also never see sob stories in the media about some guy who met his true love online but can't afford the $10K+ to travel and jump through the hoops.

They just need to treat Mexican fruit pickers and drug runners the way they treat pretty Russian girls: problem solved.

"The Chinese Exclusion Act was racist."

Let's add the White Australia Policy to that, too, and consider. ..

1) The population of China ca. 1880 was, iirc, around 200-300 million people.

2) The populations of California and Australia were both around 1-2 million. I forget precise numbers, but these are close, and I don't have the time to bother to look it up.

The Chinese could very easily have swamped both Australia and California in rapid fashion, without feeling any loss of population back of home, and made them provinces of China. Send 3 million Chinese to Australia, 2 million to California, and the population back home is still at least 195 million. The notion that it's racist for a group to want to retain cultural, political and economic dominance of a land it has settled is quite clearly a load of bullshit. Nobody is required to.subsidize their own replacement.
